While I know I could find myself disheartened as a player from his masterful performances, Julian continues to be an inspiration, despite my knowing I'll probably never achieve this level of mastery, he continues to be a beacon to aim towards.
I've been learning Julian's 'easier' songs and have found great satisfaction from it (Even though I'm no where near Julian's level). Look at Day & Age and Nocturne for starters.
@jimmison those are a couple of my favorites! I've actually been trying to learn day and age. It's slow going, but I'm going to keep at it. I'm glad we can relate haha
This song goes in so many different directions. I can hear happy, sad, melancholy, reflective, optimistic and other feelings I can't quite find the words for
everytime i see a new video of julian a part of me wants to watch it asap, while the other it's like: dude, don't watch it if you care about your musical self esteem!!
You summed up my feelings perfectly, but i'm trying to turn that feeing into wanting to practice every time I hear something he does that I want to try!
Years ago when I was in my twenties I thought the same thing every time I saw Eric Johnson play (I live in Houston). I know now, thirty years later, that was a false and unhelpful attitude--and one both Julian and Eric are unlikely to have held. Learn, learn, learn from everybody, and have confidence in your own vision. I don't mean to inject more seriousness into your comment than you probably meant--I'm in awe of Julian's artistry, too.
@@jeffsech Well, 3 years has passed since i wrote my comment and i can say that now my mentality is very different! I'm a much better guitar player and i'm not "afraid" of julian anymore. I've learn a lot from him!
Julian can always make the best out of an instrument, it doesn't matter Tele, Martin, Collings, Manzer... he just plays it the way it should be played.
I pose a question to all the guitarists that may find this? How often do you want a close up of someones picking/strumming hand? It feels like every time I'm trying to watch a video of a great guitarist and it gets to a part where I really REALLY want to see what their fretting hand is doing, it switches to a close-up of the player's picking hand or, worse, FACE (of course Lage is perfectly handsome but you know what I mean). I would think that Fretboard Journal would be a place I could rely on for just a pretty, static shot where you can see BOTH hands continuously. One day...
was it organic to the piece and the style though? i dont know... sometimes i think guys that can do that sorta stuff just do it for the sake of it. *beautiful playing* oh wait i have chops *insert chops here*
Camera person could have done better with the videoing. He got himself a great guitar with tons of character and tonal color to match his skills of musical presentation. Bravo! Thanks!
Whoever replaced the bridge needs their head seeing too , why didn’t they put in the proper long through saddle , it’s one of the features that make vintage martins stand out 🤦🏽
Maybe I can play 15’s. Astounding! I feel like I’m caught wanting something I can’t have... if Satan comes knocking, if playing like this is on the table, it would hard to resist
Greetings from nobody, TJKarlson. A guitarist's right hand is very very interesting to watch, this is where the secret lies, much more than his left hand, his wonderful guitar or his beautiful smile :-)
How come you feature the microphone instead of his left hand? And why do you spend so much time on his right hand? Do guitar players much care look at the right hand? Maybe. But I never have.
Dear Mr. Rob D, I am sorry to disagree. For someone playing guitar, the camera work here works wonderful. Mr.Lage has an extremely sophisticated right hand-technique, which one can study (or actually just gasp and drool at) at least a tiny bit here in this film. The left hand doesn't matter that much, the guitar doesn't matter at all (since a '39 Martin triple-o is out of reach anyway).
Love Lage, love FJ, but it's wild to me that in a video of a guitarist presumably shot by a guitarist, you can see what his left hand is doing for only like 10% of the video. You don't see his fretting hand for almost a full minute in the beginning. He's a handsome guy, but I want to learnt he song, not analyze his facial expressions!

That Martin sounds amazing: warm and balanced. Even the the fret buzz from the lower tuning has its charm in Julian's hands.
This is most beautiful stroytelling ever.
Magical tone and touch. Compositional genius.

A great performance as ever, something not just to listen to, but also aspire to attain.
Pure joy and balance. Thanks Julian, you bring hope to mankind.

Filip Fiebiger oh... and I don’t?
Julian es un Orquesta en la Guitarra !!! Terrible Artista por lejos uno de los mejores de la actualidad !!! Abrazos !
amazing! I love julian
Love this tune - my word how's the sound of that Martin!
Wonderful playing!!
Really sweet!
just wonderfull and original !
This has not been my experience with 40's
Great comment! xD
40s vs 40's - an important distinction!
Thanks for this video, one of my favorite musicians
yay, Julian. AGAIN!
amazing
Nostalgia
A true master.
I’m going to beg Jason to re-release the video with just the camera pointed to Julian’s right hand.
Great song! Wish there was more screen time on the fretboard and fretting hand as the channel name suggests...
Seriously... Did the camera man think he was shooting for Condenser Mic Journal? smdh
In this case it is the ribbon mike. :)
Just what I was thinking
Always amazing!!!
Nice!
Always glad to hear the great Julian at FJ.
YOU ~ ROCK ! !
Seeing him tonight for the first time and so looking forward
Every time I watch this I need to take a long gulp of an oatmeal stout to moisten my throat after that beautiful, dry vintage Martin tone.
beauty
This is like an Edward Hopper painting translated into music.
Oh, that is a spectacularly perfect comment!
Wish I had thought of that.
I saw this comment and thought wow yeah then I realized .... I wrote it ... jeez.

Is that a Royer 121 or 122?

The picking hand is quite important. Personally I love it. The pace of the picking is everything 😊

Beautiful old Martin, but to my ears Julian's Collings OM1 JL sounds as good if not better.
what's string gauge would one believe that is?
Muhammad Muhammad 12
I hear a lot of Debussy in his playing... so beautiful
@otmar taber YES! YOU MUST INTERROGATE EVERY IMPULSE!
@@JamesRone And on and on.
This reminds me alot of Elliott Smiths guitar work. Fantastic.
I had the same thought. The chord choices are very Smith.
ROYER MIC?
JL makes everything sound effortlessly great, but I do prefer this old martin to his newer collings.
Is the 000-18 running through the Carr Sportsman amp behind him and miked up as well? (I’m always on the lookout for Carr amps)
MtnLiner Nope. Sorry.
You should look for a good music teacher instead.
Sounds amazing!! What mic are you using?
I'm pretty sure that's a Royer Labs R-121. I've got their less expensive R-10 and I love it.
03:52 really?! There's allways a way he can get me in aww

Sam Evans i felt that was a bit out of place too... the lead-in was too abrupt
i agree mate, i mean dont get me wrong, who am i to question julian lage? nobody. regardless of that though i felt it wasn't needed
yea exactly my thoughts
Is guitar tuned a whole tone lower?
Yes
any idea on what kind of strings?
he is playing D'Addario EJ16 Phosphor Bronze, greetings from Munich
Guitar strings....
Am I the only one that notices the tone of that guitar. Wow! and with mahogany.
TheGrasspond you’re not alone!
This must be his 1939 Martin OOO-18
アメイジング!素敵だ!
It’s crazy how low the saddle appears on Julian’s 000-18 here.

Drop D tuning?
@ Josh Turner: I wonder would you have a try at it? I love your work, keep going!!
Yea drop D with a good dose of out of tune.
I agree with Josh Turner and think it's down a whole step. Yes some slight dissonance, primarily by choice I believe. Happy Fourth of July!
EL Holt I guess so
Not drop D, its D standard tuning. Great song, very fun to play!
its his vintage martin what makes it sound amazing
I give the guitar an A for sound, and an F for staying in tune.
And Julian gets an A+, obviously.
Who filmed/edited this?!? Nobody wants to see a video of Julian Lage that contains a bunch of footage of his picking hand!
Greetings from nobody, TJKarlson. A guitarist's right hand is very very interesting to watch, this is where the secret lies, much more than his left hand, his wonderful guitar or his beautiful smile :-)
Yeah, I forget the source of this quote, but it bears repeating anyway:
"The left hand is what you know... the right hand is who you are."
lol i think op was using good ol' sarcasm
I do
I totally do, that shit is good man
"I liked the 1940's" - Julian's 1939 Martin guitar
It certainly lived every minute of that decade.
How come you feature the microphone instead of his left hand? And why do you spend so much time on his right hand? Do guitar players much care look at the right hand? Maybe. But I never have.
