I'm learning this style (lots of 2-part improv, cadences, far out tonality, etc). See ya in 10 years.
alexander technique also

I wonder where Julian would be sonically in 10 years time
How are you planning on going about learning this?
@@MrEnderRobotmy boy! You hip! I just forgot the name of the professor who was telling us about Alexander technique! Oh and the tales of the Russian pianist at NY who was teaching Julian!
You can tell he’s hearing so much more in his mind then he’s actually playing.
@coomlord4502 Honestly, it feels like mental masturbation more than music
@gagem5 what?
I think mental orgasm is the word you are looking for@@gagem5

What’s so intriguing is you can see his brain working constantly as he plays - like a mad scientist always considering the possibilities…then turning them upside down
Saw this guy live in jazz trio and was absolutely stunned the whole time. He's a master, hands down.
Full knowledge and complete freedom. A true master.
As a guitarist I totally get this . I don’t really like it though .
@@sobeit1927 fair enough
He’s actually rehearsed this piece thousands of times. The arrangement is made to sound like improv
@@moehoward21I mean if u compare it to his other autumn leaves arrangements he obv has some licks he likes but I don’t hear much similarity
@@sentientdonuts They’re just other arrangements. His whole shtick is writing complex, crazy arrangements, practicing them up, and reciting them. They look like improv, but it’s not.
without the internet he'd be a phenom touring the local cities and towns, and his brilliance would be a myth only heard word-of-mouth by other countries... we truly live in the most double-edged timeline ever.
just saw him live at the dakota jazz club in minneapolis!
Those who know, know
I mean, except the fact that he’s on counteless contemporary jazz records, yeah sure, he’d only be touring local cities and towns.
What an amazing thought
Oh my good the dynamics in his play... so amazing
Simply amazing. And on a Fender Telecaster too. Wow....
That's absolutely mind blowing, wow!
Wow! A stylistic stew executed with precision and feel. I love having a new guitarist to dive into. Thanks for posting.
You’re in for a treat, Julian Lage is amazing
What do you think 5 months later?
His guitar is an extension of his mind and body
Always thought this with him as well
symbiosis
Absolutely amazing!
From a *huge* fan of Julian’s, thanks for sharing it. Absolutely beautiful.
That interview is a great watch / listen too.
So nice. Thanks!
This is great, thanks a lot for sharing
such a wonderful creative guitarist
Wow! Stunning and beautiful!
Thanks, I needed that
Something old, something new…great stuff.
He´s just awesome!!!!
Thiss amazing! He loves music and music loves him.
He’s the GOAT. I can’t even begin to understand how he does this but in another level I totally understand that it’s purely an expression of his mind at each moment, completely free and in love with what he’s playing.
That was great. You can see him composing as he is playing, or maybe he is just remembering ideas that he sketched out in his mind before he started playing. I also like that he is unafraid of errors. You can hear him miss notes , but it doesn't matter because it is in the middle of so much great stuff that wouldn't happen if he wasn't unafraid of errors.
I respect how Rick managed to keep it together, I was screaming during this performance
ขอบคุณสำหรับเสียงกีตาร์ ยิ่งช่วงเวลา 3:55 เป็นช่วงที่ใจฟูมาก Julian Lage การเล่นของคุณมหัศจรรย์มาก I Love Youuu💕💕💕

Very nice playing. Thanks for sharing.
Man he is so different.. awesome
Mindblowing playing. Mr. Lage should be a household name. Hope he comes to Finland soon so I can witness this guitar mastery live.
Mind blown.
Grande personalità . Il presente e il futuro della grande chitarra jazz !
Gooood !!!
Formidabile!!! Il Jackson Pollock della chitarra!!❤
Saw him live last year and it was the best show I ever saw. With Dave king. So fun.
Dave is a monster player, as is Jorge. 👍
Gorgeous❤ !
This kid has a future as a guitarist
yep he's onto something
AH THIS IS SO AMAZING
Guitar's Keith Jarrett. Superb🎉
Love the Cannonball Adderly reference at the end, well done
So cool how before the outro he pauses and you can see him considering all the possibilities for how to end
Ha! I noticed that too, he was like a chess grandmaster scanning the board to see where all of the possible moves ended up before deciding on the best play.
I really like how Julian soars around the neck. Pure guitar skill.
Genius
I'd love to have the tab to this beautiful masterpiece...so I can try to play it for the rest of my life, if I'm lucky enough to live long enough.
NEVER use “tab”. Play the notes. Follow the voice of truth. Know that fretboard.
@@hcharton5722 "To know thy fretboard is the beginning of wisdom" -Socrates
I’ll make one! For money lol
Unfortunately you do not get tabulature for this it comes from the heart after hours and hours of playing.....
He’s like a cross between Joe Pass and JS Bach!
Genio

Where?
He is playing notes and just feeling it, sounds like a question mark
I encourage all of you who liked this performance to check out Ted Greene's rendition of Autumn Leaves too. One of the all time greats, from whom Julian Lage certainly drew inspiration.
Agreed, Ted Greene is phenomenal. They Can't Take That Away From Me, Danny Boy etc etc, absolutely amazing.
Nice to see a player like this that takes me back to music in the "50's and '60's in their raw sense.
When backs his wife, singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy, he sounds like Neil Young would if he had Jim Hall's chops.
天才過ぎて言葉がない
And this is technical proficiency of the highest level. Now he can focus on emotional expression without worrying about technical limits... I wish I was this great of a guitarist
I think one would have to listen to more than one off the cuff improv to issue that sort of advice. I for one don't believe he spends even second "worrying about technical limits" while engaged in what amounts to composition in real time, AKA "improvisation" -- but that's just as perceived from here, so YMMV.
What is Jazz?
Learn to play all the right notes
Then get bored of them
Then start playing all the wrong notes.
That’s secret of jazz 🙏🏽
the secret of jazz is all chords contain the 7th. if the 7th is present then you can have the 9th, 11th, 13th... iow, if the 7th is present there are no wrong notes, just bad phrases
Damn...
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Somebody needs to transcribe this version :D
Did i just witnessed the greatest solo ever played on a guitar?
maybe you should check out some of jimmy and stochelo rosenbergs stuff and josho stephan too greetings salvatore :) but this is obviously stunning work from mr lage
You literally just witnessed Julian Lage warming up essentially
@@benjaminsteagall5499 I see what you mean. But that was a proper beautiful *performance*
The opening to I'll Be Seeing You (the Live in Los Angeles video on youtube) is my favourite of his.
No you didn’t
Ppl be like I don’t know what’s special about him or his tone and then listen to this 20 times a day.
It sounds and feels like tango
It’s crazy like what’s happening
Rick beato
And this ending is beautiful... 3:53
It is almost uncanny how he plays almost every note because he wants to in that moment, straight from his head without relying on routines and at the same time with absolute dynamic control. I know of no other guitarist who can do this to that extent.
😮
Alien!
There is so much technique going on here it is overwhelming.
Julian Lage to his guitar, "Who do you think you are? I am!"
Intro sounds like 12 tone . like Alban Berg ❤
He is for sure the best guitarist ever existed.
That's a huge call. Ever heard of Danny Gatton? Plus numerous others. Julian is brilliant BTW.
tory slusher
@@ozbluesman sure I know him, but it’s a completely different style. I studied a little of Julian, his timing and the voicing are just something else in my opinion. He’s bringing the jazz to another level.
@@jgunther3398 well she’s for sure a unique and awesome player, but i think Julian is the best.
@@ozbluesman-- Danny (R.I.P.) had monster physical chops, but his harmonic vocabulary wasn't anywhere near as vast and varied as Julian's. There's sheer agility of the hands -- and then there's profound mastery of harmony, counterpoint, syncopation, dynamics, and authenticity of expression. Very few of us can bring all that to our playing -- but IMO that's what it takes to be "brilliant" in the way that Julian keeps demonstrating.
Как же он чувствует
This guy has more ideas than chatgpt
One day I’m gonna play with Julian mark my words. I’m gonna earn my place
don't waste your time....make your own place.
As a 71-year-old man who’s been playing guitar since I was eight years old I think I see very clearly that Julian is simply posing as an earthling, but has arrived here from guitar planet 1.
What I dont understand about jazz is that it seems to have so many strict rules and you have to know like so many chord variations but it just sounds like complete randomness to me, like the first minute sounded like completely random notes but its also probably extremely specific. I don’t know if I will ever understand jazz lol but he is definitely extremely talented and one of the best at what he does judging from the comments
its not like rules its more like a language. after 2 years im starting to understand something very basic - there are licks and then just ideas which can be basically any interval which can be repeated and sounds good in improv. Licks are usually fast runs/arpeggios, by listening very intently to jazz records you can start to recognize at least this. Other than these 2 things every other improvisation to me is just either playing something out of like "free jazz" which means no rules or its just random things which are idk an expression of an artists emotions. I don't think everything should be thoroughly analyzed and understood, sometimes we can just leave it as "improv in the moment"
This is very heavily improvised stuff on the moment that works with the changes to Autumn Leaves. If you know how the chord sequence to the song goes, you can understand better what he is actually playing and how it relates to everything else.
There is only one rule and that rule is context
I swear whenever I see some amazing performance the camera always zooms out and Rick Beato shows up…
I thought there was no thing as a “master…” but Lage is as close as you can get
Wow, this is SO much more interesting than your album with Frizell. Is stuff like this on another CD?
