Nothing tops the original, but this is a good homage to it and it’s probably on par with the 2nd movie. The only person I miss is Lisa Eilbacher, who played Jenny Summers in the original. If they brought back Bronson Pinchot’s Serge, she should have been back too. The stuff with his daughter gets a bit sitcom-y, but it’s to be expected. This was a movie made for the fans and it’s good in that respect. It’s good they brought back John Ashton as Taggert, who was absent in the 3rd film.
I wouldn't say that the stuff with the daughter was borderline sitcom since it leaned in to the melodrama, though I will say this, I enjoyed the back and forth with them bullshitting Beverly Hills to advance their investigation, that was a nice touch.
Serge peaked in Beverly Hills Cop 3. Weird to say.
