For a period of time in the 80's. Eddie Murphy was the biggest star in the world. He was the world's number one stand up comic and had the world's number one movie at the same time. He also had a hit song! 84 was a monster year for movies. Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Police Academy, Footloose and Beverly Hills Cop among others. This was originally written with Sylvester Stallone in mind. Disagreements over the script led to him converting the movie into the film, Cobra. Eddie Murphy was also planned to play Winston in Ghostbusters but he took this movie instead. Yes. The instrumental, “Axel F. Fellow GenX here. Can confirm. "Delirious" is my favorite, but I remember a group of us kids watched "Raw" on a scrambled cable-pay channel when we weren't supposed to. Being stand-up, the visual scrambling didn't matter because the audio came through fine. I still quote them both to this day!

I so love the Jenny and Axle and Mikey dynamic. Although I know Jenny was supposed to be the love interest for Axle when Stallone was attached and changed her character, I like the idea that these 3 were poor kids from the street who remained friend and they each grew up and went on their own different path.
The shift away from Jenny being a love interest to just a platonic friend is a bit of a bummer simply because, of course, it was driven by race since having interrational love interests was still a touchy thing when this was made. But I do love the friendship between them. You don't get enough purely platonic friendships between men and women in movies/TV, so it's refreshing when a pretty blonde isn't automatically relegated to "love interest" like originally intended here.

John Ashton plays one of the cops in this and also played the other bounty hunter in Midnight Run, opposite Robert DeNiro. Both movies we're directed by Martin Brest.
Midnight Run is excellent. Top notch acting all around. The chemistry between De Niro and Charles Grodin is great, as is the chemistry between De Niro and Yaphet Kotto, who incidentally delivers one of his finest performances in my opinion.
Ronnie Cox (the lieutenant) has been a beloved singer songwriter and actor in Hollywood for like 4 decades, his persona for most of that time was much like this movie, an affable good man you could count on... THEN paul Verhoeven made him 2 of the most vile characters in cinema in RoboCop & Total Recall, having seen those 2 movies first as a kid i was absolutely shocked that he didn't turn out to be "in on it" in this movie because he was so good as a villain. Once you see the stuff he did before this it becomes even crazier that Verhoeven even thought of him, he so sweet and nice in stuff. (He's great as Jellico in Star Trek TNG as well )
5:28 "oh. where did we just see this guy? actually, i don't think we've seen this guy." -TBR actually, you've seen Paul Reiser in Aliens. "F*ck you Burke!" was your exact quote.
As a lil white boy growing up in a hick town, Eddie was my first connection to my black brothers and sisters. I saw Beverly Hills Cop in the theatre when i was ten years old, and i loved it then and love it just as much now. Long live Eddie Murphy!
All rise for the honorable Judge Reinhold. Honestly, this is one of Eddie’s best movies. I hope y’all do the entire franchise. Also, please add the comedy Mallrats to a poll.
The film where Eddie actually broke through is “48 Hours.” Nick Nolte and Murphy are a cop and a con, respectively, who team up to track down a pair of killers. Nolte and Murphy are magic together.
Beverly Hills Cop was not originally supposed to be a comedy. The original script was more of an action movie called Beverly Drive, with Axel Foley as an LAPD Metro Division cop from East L.A. who ends up getting transferred to Beverly Hills. The script went through several revisions, with the Foley character going from being an L.A. police officer, to a Pittsburgh police officer, then finally to a Detroit police officer. Both Martin Scorsese and David Cronenberg were offered the job of directing, and both turned it down. Several actors were considered for the role of Axel Foley, including Mickey Rourke (who dropped out), Sylvester Stallone (who rewrote the entire script into a straight action movie and left the project after producers disliked his changes), and Harrison Ford (who turned it down). Eddie Murphy was finally cast, and the final draft of the script, which was extensively revised with Murphy's input, was not completed until the day production began. Stallone's version of the script eventually became the basis for the 1986 action film, Cobra.
I am SO glad you reacted to this! Such a classic film. The theme song “Axel F” played at every outdoor event for years! Ronnie Cox as the Lieutenant is such a great performance. The little smile he gives when Axel says “the super cop story was working” is masterclass in acting, showing the audience he isn’t a bad guy he just follows the rules. It is so nice to go jack and see him as a good guy - which is so rare since Cox became known for playing incredible villains. It may be my favorite Ronnie Cox role ever just because it’s so different.
Inspector Todd was played by the late Gill Hill, who was, among other things, an actual cop. At one point he was president of the Detroit City Council and he ran for mayor. Definitely watch Beverly Hills Cop II
19:46 Eddie was ad libbing a good chunk of the dialogue and added the line about them being super cops, which was making the guy playing Taggart crack up, that’s why he started rubbing his eyes and was looking down.
"Can you put this in a good spot? 'Cause all this shit happened the last time I was here..." It's been mentioned before - but 48 Hours is one of Murphy's best films. Got some people you've already seen (Billy from Predator) and it was a huge hit for Nick Nolte. It also has James Remar as Ganz - one of the most intense villains ever in a film.
48 Hrs also has Brion James, who was in another Walter Hill film, Red Heat, as a snitch named Streak. But he's best remembered for playing Leon, one of the replicants in Blade Runner.
Where you guys might have seen some of these actors before: Paul Reiser, Axel's annoying cop pal back in Detroit, was in "Aliens". Judge Reinhold, playing Billy Rosewood, was in "Gremlins" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". Ronny Cox, who played Lt. Bogomil, was the main baddie in "Robocop" and "Total Recall".
These stories were written in a time when there was no internet or pervasive cellphone computers in everyone's hand. Therefore, it would take longer to find out Axel was lying about who he was and many people back then wouldn't bother.
@@abramsullivan7764except it really would be bs, Made today Axel would be played by Lizzo, Rosewood and partner would be gay ,Jenny a disabled, indigenous lesbian and Mikey would be trans.

@@theaikidoka Im not ignoring the 60, at least in terms of years, and even if not Biblically significant it still may have something to do with the Israeli 6 day war in 1967, and something even much bigger could be happening in 2027, but guess we'll just have to wait and see...??
"Bowfinger" should be on your reaction list. It was a late 90's Steve Martin movie where Eddie really stole the show. I think it is a highly underrated gem.
One of the funniest action comedy movies ever made! Originally Sylvester Stallone was going to play the role of Axel Foley, who's name was going to be Axel Cobretti, and it was going to more more darker, violent and action packed in the rewritten script by Stallone. After giving the producers his draft of the script, it was rejected and Stallone turned his script into the action adventure thriller COBRA in 1986.
One of many reasons this fil stays so beloved is it SHOWS the audience how good a cop Foley is (specifically the strip club robbery scene) not tells us but shows him use his detective skills. Murphy started out like a comet, 48 hours, Beverly Hills Cop, and Trading Places no actor will ever start that on fire again i don't think Love Samantha discussion with you after as always its my favorite
I love that scene. He switches from being a wise-ass to being an experienced cop in a split second, and Taggart picks up on it and starts taking him seriously for the first time. It is an extremely well crafted scene.
@@Wishbone1977 And as a result, Bogomil (the great Ronnie Cox) is willing to give Foley a listen ... but while the coffee grounds are suspicious, that's just not enough to act on.
4:32: I remember seeing this at the movies when I was 8 or 9…and my dad laughing soooo hard when Foley was hanging on to the side of the truck. I was sitting closer to the front, with a couple of friends, and dad’s laugh just filled the theatre. Aw, good times
Eddy Murphy started his career on SNL and he actually saved the show from being cancelled. He went to do 48 Hrs. with Nick Nolte and did such a smash with it that he became the new it guy for a few in a row. There are some skits from SNL that you HAVE to check out. Hysterical
@@SeenGodand of course Mr Robinsons Neighborhood. While holding a dog with a diamond studded collar “Today’s word kids is ‘ransom’. Like the cops chased me and I Ran Some”
35:15 - Hi TBR Schmitt! Beverly Hills Cop was very early in Eddie Murphy's film career. It was his fourth film. Murphy's early career was more mature audience types of films. It was later (like the middle) of his career when he started doing more wide audience movies, and of course children's movies like Shrek, and Mulan, Dr. Dolittle, and the like; which most people who were children around this time largely only know him for, so it is always a surprise for young adults today who grew up on "Eddie: Light" when they see his earlier, raunchier work, like 48 Hrs.. In the more recent years, he's done more dramatic roles like Mr. Church, and Dream Girls. But he has also still done many mature audiences type of films too like, Norbit, Bowfinger, Life, Metro, Showtime, Dolemite Is My Name, Coming 2 America, and Tower Heist.
For being 40 years old, this is definitely a timeless classic. Still watch it now and again to get a feeling of nostalgia. Also loved the reference to how much the hotel cost compared to today..incredable.
I ain't falling for no banana in a tail pipe😂This movie was a blockbuster when it was released. Glad you guys are reacting to this. Another great Murphy films I recommend are Boomerang,Nutty Professor, and Bowfinger.
Lisa Eilbacher, who plays Jenny, was also in another super hit movie from the early eighties. An Officer And A Gentleman, with Richard Gere and Debra Winger. Lisa plays the female Aviation Officer Candidate, who enjoys the "crash an airplane into water and try to get out before you drown" test. It's like a short rollercoaster that goes into a swimming pool and ends up upside down, underwater. It scares the other candidates, all male, and they find it hard to complete. But when it is her turn, she gets out of the rollercoaster cage easily, swims to the surface, laughs happily, and shouts "That was fun! Can I do it again?" That scene got everyone in the movie theatre when I watched the movie back then! 🙂
Rare that sequels are better or close to the original. Hills cop 2, Aliens, terminator 2 etc... I'm blessed to come up in this age of movies! From 15 year old the crew at the movie theater new my name.
This was actually Eddie's first movie where he was the clear cut star. In his earlier films 48 hours and Trading Places they paired him with more established actors like Nick Nolte and Dan Akroyd. Other Eddie Murphy movies to watch include 48 Hours, The Golden Child, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Boomerang, Harlem Nights, The Nutty Professor 1&2, and Life.
As a Gen Xer, its great to see the younger generation reacting to this great movie. FYI Beverly Hills Cop 3 is currently in post-production. the trailer is out now.
Whether SNL or his early movie career, Eddie Murphy brought something to the table that no one had or really has since. The problem was that once he was a gigantic star, it was hard to play these fish out of water roles he was so good in.
Beverly Hills Cop 2 was great, 3 was so so but still had its fun moments and i'm excited for Beverly Hills Cop 4 coming to netflix on 4th of July weekend
This movie was an absolute juggernaut when it came out and even though Murphy was well known at the time (SNL, 48 Hrs, stand up comedy), this film launched him into the stratosphere. And it **still** shocks me that he was only 22 or so when it came out. He's so charismatic and comfortable in front of the camera. He just demanded your attention. I wish I had his confidence. 😅
That song is iconic I've watched some family guy but ya know I grew up in the 80s and the theme is such a great one. Anyway great to see y'all are watching great movies
I was 13 when this came out, and I was so excited that I snuck into the movie- loved it, of course. Harold Faltermeyer did the music for the movie, and he wrote a sweet piece for it that didn't make it into this movie. He was then playing keyboards on a Billy Idol album, and asked the guitarist, Steve Stevens to punch it up with a guitar solo, and they did that in only a couple hours. This piece of music became the main theme for Top Gun, and won them an Oscar- Steve had completely forgotten even doing it. Harold also did the music for Fletch- another hilarious movie with an excellent crime solving plot.
The guy you thought you recognized at the beginning was Paul Reiser. I think you've seen him in Aliens. He's also in stranger things, but he looks much different these days. This movie also introduced Bronson pinchot and Damon wayans, both of whom were on to become very successful in television. Also notable that 80s stereotypical villain Ronny Cox is in this and he's not playing a bad guy.
1984 was an insane year for movies. So many great films came out that year, from comedies to dramas, action films, science fiction, not to mention the best film version ever made of George Orwell's _Nineteen Eighty-Four_ (a truly devastating film you really should check out sometime).
You guys are the best reactors out there and I'll tell you for one simple reason..you don't bleep out any of the swearing and it's so refreshing.. every other channel bleeps and blurs out everything with the excuse it's down to RUclips which is nonsense..don't ever change ❤
Fun! FYI the song playing in the strip club was NASTY GIRL written by PRINCE for his all-girl band Vanity 6. It was 1984, the same year Purple Rain came out. PRINCE was all over the radio that year. And this year is 40 years since that movie was released. You should watch Purple Rain if you've never seen it. Have fun!
Hey TBR Fam! Man, you ALMOST called it; the guy who looked familiar in the beginning was PAUL RISER, who was in ALIENS with SIGOURNEY WEAVER! He became famous for the T.V. sitcom, MAD ABOUT YOU starring HELEN HUNT. Anyway, at the time, EDDIE MURPHY was the biggest star on SNL and FINALLY broke out in his first major motion picture, BEVERLY HILLS COP. Yes, the sequels get better and better, so please watch them with us! SIDE NOTE: AXEL FOLEY'S theme song is actually titled AXEL F. It was produced by HAROLD FALTERMEYER and won all kinds of music awards including 2 Grammys, and slaughtered everyone during that time by going GOLD, PLATINUM, and DIAMOND! The significance of his music was the use of the SYNTHESIZER, and BHC was one of the first films to use Synthesized music in its score, mirroring the success of ELECTRONIC MUSIC in the now famous TV show, MIAMI VICE.
I was like you guys when I first saw this. I expected slapstick comedy, it turned out to be "clever" comedy. All side actors were perfectly done, perfect amount of silliness, perfect amount of seriousness.
Watched this on home video back in the day. My mother wouldn't tolerate cussing, but Eddie was so charming, I caught her giggling a few times, when if I had spoken that way, there would have been consequences.Good times!
After this are Beverly Hills Cop 2, Beverly Hills Cop 3 and the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop Axel F. Eddie Murphy turned down an offer to star in Ghostbusters to star in this. The actor playing Jeffrey played Burke in Aliens, while the actor playing Billy has been in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gremlins and The Santa Clause franchise. For more action comedy/buddy cop films, I recommend watching the Bad Boys films. The actor playing Victor Maitland plays the main villain in Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and a Viking chieftain in Vikings. The actor playing Bogomil, Ronny Cox, was also in RoboCop and Total Recall
Premiered on December 5th, 1984 Beverly Hills Cop was not only no 1 for nearly 2 months straight. It beat Ghostbusters for the highest grossing movie of 1984. That car chase scene was filmed near my neighborhood in Detroit. We met Jerry Bruckheimer, Martin Brest, & Eddie Murphy, who bought me and the kids in my hood ice cream off the ice cream truck. Good times.
Eddie Murphy's 4th film, first leading role and also his debut as producer. The beginning of his reign as an comedy superstar on film. Produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer (pre-Top Gun). Grammy Award winner for Best Score Soundtrack in Visual Media, Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay and the No.1 film of 1984 (dethroning Ghostbusters). The score is by Harold Faltermeyer and the 'Axel F' theme is truly legendary. As well, this film's soundtrack is one of the greatest of the era. Movies about Cops prior to BHC were either dramas and or thrillers. Afterwards more comedies about cop characters came to be. Part 2 (directed by Tony Scott) is a major winner of an sequel. Part 3 (directed by John Landis) is the worse and you will be disappointed. Part 4 aka Axel F hitting Netflix before BHC's 40th anniversary is going to be epic.
48 Hours, its sequel , The Golden Child, and the Beverly hill cop 2, and the Distinguished Gentleman. The last is the perfect movie to watch in a election year 😭 😂
@43:53 funny, you mentioned Top Gun. As the composer for this scored that movie too and both films were produced by Don Simpson / Jerry Bruckheimer. Tony Scott, who directed Top Gun, directs BHC 2, which has to be watched on the channel. As always a great reaction guys.
"Beverly Hills Cop 2" and then "Midnight Run" - two more great 80s action comedies. John Ashton (who plays the Taggart is in Mid. Run as a bounty hunter with Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin). Martin Brest directed both B.H. Cop and Midnight Run. Lisa Eilbacher (Jennie) plays Charles Bronson's daughter in the crime thriller "10 to Midnight" another great (but very graphic) 80s thriller (no comedy in that one though.)

The film where Eddie actually broke through is “48 Hours.” Nick Nolte and Murphy are a cop and a con, respectively, who team up to track down a pair of killers. Nolte and Murphy are magic together.
Also the sequel 'Another 48 Hours'.
I can never hear "Roxanne" without seeing Eddie in the cell 😅
I loled so hard the first time I saw this at Foleys absolute disbelief that he got thrown out a window.
Bronson Pinchot is the unsung star of these movies
He was also a crooked cop
19:46 Eddie was ad libbing a good chunk of the dialogue and added the line about them being super cops, which was making the guy playing Taggart crack up, that’s why he started rubbing his eyes and was looking down.
"Can you put this in a good spot? 'Cause all this shit happened the last time I was here..." It's been mentioned before - but 48 Hours is one of Murphy's best films. Got some people you've already seen (Billy from Predator) and it was a huge hit for Nick Nolte. It also has James Remar as Ganz - one of the most intense villains ever in a film.
Sonny Landham too (Billy from Predator)
Jonathan Banks is in this and 48 hours
True if this film was made today people will be like 'Aw shit this film is woke.' That sort of bullshit.
@@abramsullivan7764except it really would be bs, Made today Axel would be played by Lizzo, Rosewood and partner would be gay ,Jenny a disabled, indigenous lesbian and Mikey would be trans.

Cobra is an underatted film

One of many reasons this fil stays so beloved is it SHOWS the audience how good a cop Foley is (specifically the strip club robbery scene) not tells us but shows him use his detective skills. Murphy started out like a comet, 48 hours, Beverly Hills Cop, and Trading Places no actor will ever start that on fire again i don't think Love Samantha discussion with you after as always its my favorite
Eddie Murphy wasn't in 48 Hours. You're thinking of Ernie Hudson.
I love that scene. He switches from being a wise-ass to being an experienced cop in a split second, and Taggart picks up on it and starts taking him seriously for the first time. It is an extremely well crafted scene.
Jim Carrey had a similar rocket start.

The bit about being Maitland’s lover was improvised on the spot. The director just said to Eddie, “find a way to get past the Maitre’d”.
Growing up, I had this movie recorded to VHS before Return of the Jedi, so it was part of the Star Wars quadrilogy for me.
I LOVE Beverly Hills Cop! I'm so glad you reacted to it!
The guy that plays "Rosewood played in another movie I like and loved as a kid called "Vice Versa.

Bowfinger is wildly underrated. Hilarious cast

Crazy Frog covered the "Axel F" theme from this movie.
Cover is a very generous description ...
A masterpiece. The comedy, action and drama were so well blended together. The cast was great. The chemistry was fantastic.

I wouldn't tag "The Graduate" as a comedy, but rather drama. And "Idiocracy" is definitively a documentary.
I've seen this movie sooo many times, but just realized that it was a stuntman for Eddie at 21:54. I never picked it up until now.

My uncle was one of the real Detroit police officers who point their guns at Eddie when the cigarette truck crashes.
1984 was an insane year for movies. So many great films came out that year, from comedies to dramas, action films, science fiction, not to mention the best film version ever made of George Orwell's _Nineteen Eighty-Four_ (a truly devastating film you really should check out sometime).
