  • Today’s video features the unusual sight of a ‘Bongo’ LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 in Shropshire! The B1 in question is LSL's 61306 Mayflower. The train originated in High Wycombe this morning, heading to Bristol Temple Meads from where the diesel gave way to 61306 for the journey via Newport, Hereford and Ludlow to Shrewsbury. The return was meant to be a repeat of the outward in the opposite direction, but as the video shows this was not meant to be.
I was heading down from the North East this morning, and due to a freight derailment at Carlisle I had to divert from my local via Leeds and Manchester instead of travelling via Carlisle as intended. At Crewe I took the 11:10 TfW service to Shrewsbury. Given I had suitcases on me I decided to just film the arrival and departure at Shrewsbury. 61306 is first seen cruising into Platform 4 at Shrewsbury, before being dragged out by the diesel. After that I met ‪@danielstrainsukofficial9133‬ for a brief chat whilst 61306 was turned and sent to Coton Hill T.C. for servicing. I set up on Platform 5 expecting 61306 to turn up and depart from Platform 7, but news began to filter through of a technical fault on the train and hopes began to fade of the steam still being on the front. Lo and behold, the 47 turned up in Platform 4 a few minutes later, with no sign of 61306. As it turned out, one of 61306's springs had broken meaning it was unable to perform the return journey and will most likely limp back to Crewe soon.
Thanks to all who made today possible despite the failure of 61306, including TPE, TfW, NR, LSL, Saphos and to 61306 and her crew. Thanks also to ‪@danielstrainsukofficial9133‬ for his company. I hope you enjoy as I did, sorry that I don't have a departure shot to show you all!

My dad has a model of the Mayflower in his railway collection and it was nice seeing the locomotive out on the main line sorry to hear that she developed a problem on the return journey thanks for sharing this great video 👍❤️🚂

Ah that's fantastic! 61306 is always a delight to see and I do like the livery. Thankfully a repair was enacted extremely quickly. Regards, Dan

Nice to see her in the sunshine. Thanks for posting and the information into the cause of failure. I was glad to film her storming up Llanvihangel, sounding magnificent, but the return working, almost bang on time, was a surprise with only the 47 in front. I didn't mind, the weather was lovely

For sure, Mayflower and her livery look best in full sun! I'll bet Llanvihangel was excellent. Certainly a shame about the 47 but good weather can make many things better. Thank you very much and no worries! Regards, Dan

Steam engines do have the amazing ability to limp to a safe space like a station where rescue is easier. It is only occasionally that a failure on the track occurs. Diesels if they fail just stop.

Not always ,its depends on the fault.

Steam engines are fantastic pieces of kit and in the case of some failures, like the one in the video, they are able to limp to a yard to be fixed! Diesel failures can be quite hard to fix as fast as Mayflower was. Regards, Dan

@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 as I said it depends on the fault .

Great video as always Dan, shame she failed, just one of those unfortunate things sadly. Kind regards, Jake.

Cheers Jake, certainly one of those things! Thankfully a broken spring is among the easier failures to fix, as she was repaired overnight and worked the English Riviera tour yesterday. Regards, Dan

Thank you very much John! Yes it was annoying as we were all set up in position and could even hear 61306 moving about in the yard! Thankfully she was able to be quickly repaired and sent down South. Regards, Dan

I'm sure Mayflower will get the spring sorted by the volunteers. Britannia has suffered breakdowns herself, and has come out on top in fine fettle. Don't apologise, these things happen as a steamy gets older. Perhaps my real railway video with a main line twist to it will cheer you up. It's proof that I've seen another LNER steamy, Sir Nigel Gresley, on the main line for the first time.

Mayflower was repaired overnight and sent to Taunton the following morning. Thankfully, a broken spring is one of the easier failures to fix! Regards, Dan

Yes there have been a few so far this year! LSL are definitely having a lot of trouble with 70000 Britannia. Hopefully all the issues can be ironed out. Regards, Dan
