Mayflower races through Abergavenny: Welsh Marches Express - 2024

- For what seems to be the last time this year for me, Thompson B1 No. 61306 Mayflower, but this was no short trip out. The Mayflower hauled the Welsh Marches Express from Bristol to Shrewsbury and back, after taking over from Class 47 diesels, which had led the tour from Paignton. The intention was to take full advantage of the south-western start, however, it would've resulted in a hideously early start time to be at Cockwood Harbour for 6.30 am. Instead, the advantage is taken with the southwestern finish.
Starting in Bristol, 61306 climbs through the suburbs towards the Welsh border. From there, a quick dash across the border to Abergavenny. I stayed in Wales for the day, another film revealing the day will be released soon, before heading to Llanvihangel Crucorney in the evening. Afterwards, it's a short drive to a Pilning, before the locomotive detached from the tour at Bristol. The Mayflower ran as a light engine positioning movement to Bishops Lydeard, as seen at Cogload Junction, followed shortly by the 47s at Whiteball. I won't be covering this tour again in the years to come unless circumstances change, it is rather demanding on the driver and car. On this hot and humid day, shots were taken at:

This is simply superb, loved every shot, well picked locations... 61306 working hard! Weather certainly made it! I liked the shot at Cogload - not often we see a loco on it's own and I think the IET passed at just the right time, added to the shot in a sense. Excellent work!
Thank you, I made an effort to pick locations where the train was at speed or against the gradient. I was surprised at Cogload junction to see the loco on its own, I thought it would have a support coach.

Mayflower looks great in the sun, and thanks, I try to find some good places to film, but I had never been to the region before, so using other channels locations, I think the spots made for a good video.
The shot at Pilning was a lucky accident, I arrived at the station whilst the train was in the Severn tunnel, found the gates to the station shut, panicked, drove for 30 seconds to a random field with a footpath in it, ran into the middle of the field and just as I started to set up, I could hear the train thunder up the gradient, for a rather lucky shot!

Fantastic she sounds amazing when powering. I saw her like that through Teignmouth for the English riviera express from Paignton
2 cylinder symphony, like a GWR Hall or Manor. 60007, which is booked to do the next tour to Kingswear, is a completely different 3 cylinder instrument.

Nice video. I rode on that tour last from Paignton to Shrewsbury with 60007. Wish they could have popped the steam on from Taunton but none the less. I think you still get a good steam haulage for the miles out of all that
That sounds great! I released whilst putting the video together, that this is the first tour I’d rather be a passenger on than film. Being onboard on a nice steam hauled trip to Shrewsbury is better than watching everyone enjoy a nice steam hauled trip to Shrewsbury. Thanks for watching
Lovely shots! What filming device do you use, by the way, as I am curious as to how you are getting such good shots.
I have a camcorder, but the smoothness of shots is because I shoot with a low shutter-speed, which makes moving items blur.
