Steam Trains at Speed On The Mainline - Volume 1

- With plenty of spare time at the moment, I have finally had a moment to put together a steam at speed compilation, so sit back and enjoy these mainline monsters let off the leash in Southern England, operating upto the current permitted 75mph limit.
Featuring 9 Locomotives:
SR West Country No.34046 'Braunton'
SR Battle of Britain No.34067 'Tangmere'
SR Merchant Navy No.35018 'British India Line'
SR Merchant Navy No.35028 'Clan Line'
LNER A4 No.60009 'Union of South Africa'
LMS Royal Scot No.46115 'Scots Guardsman'
LMS Jubilee No. 45699 'Galatea'
LMS Black 5 No.45212
BR 7MT No.70013 'Oliver Cromwell'
Footage taken between 2009 - 2019
Foot note:
Diesel locomotives "Tail Gunner"
The use of Diesel locomotives on some tours is because of operational reasons. Some of the tours run to destinations with no turning facilities, so the diesel hauls the train to a location where the steam loco can take over again. They are also used for train heating, assistance on steep gradients(especially during leaf fall season)and are a great help if any problems arise with the steam loco.
Most Diesels used are interesting machines in their own right too, with most of then now over 50 years old, some even 60 years old now.

I wish so badly that we did this in the U.S. these engines look so serious on the main line.. they have the dignity of going fast as they're meant to. That doesn't happen here.
At this point, all of our operable steamers are just getting old. The faster you run them, the more wear, the soon they have to go in for a full overall.. and $$$$ for that isn’t guaranteed. Even in the UK, Tornado is the only engine to my knowledge that can really do mainline running. It’s not just the cost of insurance for someone who might get hurt, it’s the cost of insuring basically the irreplaceable. I hope that the Pennsy T-1 they are building will be allowed to run at line speed at least, but honestly I fear she too will be relegated to 45mph. 😭😭
@@Penryn87 Tornado is not the only locomotive that can "really do mainline running" it's in the same boat as all the other mainline locomotives, which there are many.
35028 'Clan Line' as seen a few times in the video, has run on the mainline since 1974. The big locomotives in the UK can be operated upto 90mph but requires a lot of paperwork and tests. Unofficially, many locomotives have run at that speed.
@@Penryn87
There are multiple steam engines on the mainline in the U.K.
DOnt agree. The USA J class 611 looks very very dignifiied. Much more so than these, that look like scaled-up HO models. And I'm not even an American :O
The Rocinante: I think we do. The Union Pacific acquired Big Boy, renovated it & pressed it into service, its the only one though. Here is the magnificient big boy: ruclips.net/video/UYYzhjUzCOU/видео.html
the whistles echoing, the beautiful white smoke, with such speed, hits me in the chest, my respects from the United States
you mean uk?
@@tristansocool no he is from the US and he is admireing the elegance of brtish rail because big american steamers hardly have any elegance
@@daitsukishiro1505 American steamers usually weren’t built with elegance in mind, more function over form. It takes quite a bit of brute force to challenge the terrain we have.
@@blackbirdgaming8147 thats true
I legitimately don't know, so askin lol, why do we not see any Steam engines anymore? I mean even for funsies at this point? I adore the sounds of them. Makes me think of watching Starlight Express when I was little and the fight between steam, electric and diesel engines. Steam always wins :)
Its not hard to understand why there were so many train spotters years ago in the golden age of steam! Wow...awesome footage.
Takes me back to my trainspotting days in the 60s when they used to hit 100mph through Tamworth, Basingstoke and Swindon. Great memories.❤
It's really awesome seeing steam locomotives still being used to this day the British definitely has pushed steam technology over its limits to get up to such speeds
Being limited 75 mph they're not even being pushed! Most of these will do 100 if they really try.
@@__-fm5qv more of a safety thing though init.
that pfp.... Uwu
From scrapyard condition and restored in most cases too.
You're seeing steam traction technology at its pinnacle, the highest it ever got. All these locos were withdrawn in the 60's, and many were getting on by then. Most were rebuilt from scrap condition after often years sitting in Barry scrapyard in Wales. As my wallpaper I have 34046 Braunton in very poor condition after being laid up at Barry for 25 or so years. With a click I can bring up Braunton as she is now, if I need cheering up
Without Dai Woodham it would have been so very different....
When I was a kid, about 9 or 10 maybe, I used to go to a bridge with my pals. A straight one with a sort of metal grid floor. We would stand on it and wait for the express to sweep past at full speed. Incredibly exiting to see these monsters roaring towards you and then pass a few feet beneath you. A blast of noise, smoke, steam, heat, and smell. Incredible memory and sadly one that kids today will never experience.
Absolutely, plus a nice black face. Lol
Amusing to see people already 6 feet away from the edge instinctively step back even further when the beast approaches. Lovely stuff!
There’s something really special about the whistle as they barrel through these stations.
Loudly announcing, “Hey! I’m not stopping!!”
as a child i lived near a train station, and i remember the sound of that trains and lokomotives well. at 03:16 this matches my rememberence best. you could hear the lokomotoves first, with their fast "beat", only later the wheels and cars are audible. i was always fasinated by the sound of the lokomotives....
Same is the case with me. Heavy smoke with cloud like dense steam vapors in the winter emitting from both the leading engines and bankers chugging the goods trains were the common land scape near my Railway quarter in my childhood.
Another wonderful video. It’s amazing how these images have the ability to evoke real joy. A rare commodity these days . Many thanks.
Wish he would turn the camera though...

I have grown up around steam and it humbles this 37 year old to see steam engines earning their keep. They are working machines after all. The very intention of their being is being forfilled and that fills me with pride. I still maintain they are alive. They are a living breathing thing and I will never get bored of that.
I actually had tears in my eyes watching bits of this. The power, such raw power.
I love the atmospheric sounds of these trains. They're really marvelous the excitement is thriling!
6:22!!!
Please never stop doing these!
Yes don’t ever stop
It makes me feel better after having watched a steam engine whizzing and whistling. I have ridden steam engines not quite often during my employment from 1971 to 1975 as a goods train guard in Rawalpindi division of Pakistan. You can not guess the joy of having a warm cup of tea prepared by fireman in winter.
I'm old enough to remember when steam trains were the only form of motive power in the UK ! This excellent video brought back so many memories - cheers for that. 😎

Wonderful collection. Who says steam locos are less powerful! I also enjoyed the whistles, really nostalgic.
@Doctor Whos No sir. 1) They need a turnstile to turn around for the return journey, 2) they need water every couple of hundred miles and hence not good for long distance non stop trains, 3) their acceleration to full speed took about 3-5 miles. 4) they spewed a lot of coal dust and smoke, 5) need at least 3 strong men to operate.
@Doctor Whos The startup takes 10-20 hours.... And there has to be lot of things wrong before the boiler explodes.
It's not about power. Steam locos are actually too powerful for their own good, which you can see by how hard it is to avoid wheelslip when starting from a stop. And ones like these with the large-diameter driver wheels are extremely fast as well. The main reason not to use them is fuel efficiency, only 11% for steam vs 30-35% for diesel. They're also extremely high maintenance and labor intensive, requiring almost a full day to build up steam and requiring lots of water stops along the line as they don't recondense their exhaust steam.
Steam trains are very powerful
@@AxuFly99 Yes, that is why they had safety valves on top of the boiler.
Great film ! Memories of the steam age watching them at Streetly station 1960/1/2/3 .
Bombay Howrah mail used to reach Jabalpur at about 12 noon & it's engine had an unique sound whistle which was so very musical to ears! And soooooo punctual! Thanks for taking to the world of nostalgic memories of childhood.
Excellent video. Sterling performances from the Southern machines on home turf. Outstanding!
Amazing to see one of the most prominent British inventions still at work! Thanks for sharing.
Americans invented it because Americans are the good guys.

That is exactly what I am talking about! Steam at speed, not pootling about like some others put in their videos. This is brilliant!
I'm crying it's so elegant so beautiful. You can never find a diesel that makes you feel this way.
কাঁদেন না
Except the HST Intercity 125, some would argue.
diesels are ugly
I loved this video. Something about British trains that impress me in several ways. Also, it might be because the trips are relatively short and one does not become bored. Additionally, well modulated voices giving information over station loud speakers is quite impressive.
Great set of clips Alex, thoroughly enjoyed it! Look forward to Volume 2.
I'm a diesel man. But these beasts at speed are awesome. Love the evening shots with all the carriage lights on especially!
Steam locomotive is the king of all locomotive engines, very amazing view watching.
That took me back a long long way. Big thank you to all involved.
Wonderful! I really appreciate the steam-power!
Wow that's good. Thanks very much. Never seen the springs on the locos working so much.
What an awesome video, I love the whistles. Each one is different, pitch, tone. Every Loco has a different voice
Great selection. Some videos of steam locos at speed are not what is claimed, but these all had the hammer down for real. Good stuff. Just booked my first post-lockdown steam trip for July. Can't wait.
A steam train is not supposed to put the hammer down as you call it. These days they provide scenic rail tours in a unique way from a bygone era that isn't so bygone after all!!!!
@@Eleina1951 "Not supposed"? Dear me. Patronising much? Go and have a lie down.
Wonderful Video ! As one of those sad old gits who "play with toy trains" this makes a superb background sound. I could listen to it all day... Thanks for posting it, and the other series 2 & 3. Anton, down in Cornwall.
I agree it is wonderful to see a powerful steam loco thundering along at full speed like this: the sound, steam and the smell make one nostalgic for an age when travelling by train was wild, romantic and dramatic
😮❤
I'm moving to England in June/July and I'm excited to start trainspotting like you! [btw I am from south Africa]
I will always be amazed and troubled by the view and sound I experienced in my teens when suplying with charcoals the loco engine my father being an engineer in the 60's. Thanks for the opportunity.
Very impressive! Thanks for uploading!
That sure exercised the goosebumps!!!
Amazing video
WOW such a wonderful collection of steam hauled tours feels like the 50'6 to the 60's thanks for posting
Hearing all the coaches fly by so seamlessly on rail built for high speed is so satisfying. It's wierd hearing it without the clickity clack most would associate with older trains.
Thats actually from the track joints you hear the clickity clack sound, welded tracks are smoother sounding at each joint
Wery beautiful video with steam trains! Nice to see these old locomotives at big speed. Greetings from Russia🇷🇺
British steam rules. So fast and graceful.
Fantastic catches, all of them! Some very bouncy p-way there…

My best friend, OMG! So wonderful! I really love this! Thank you so much!
Very entertaining, and it's interesting to note that the diesel is noticeably working on several of the clips.
I guess they don't want to wear out the steam locomotive too much. Which is understandable.
I'm glad it's in the 21st century steam trains are still around to enjoy to see him passing by
Impressive, fascinating, beautifull, but it is alarming to see the locomotive bouncing on the uneven track 😲
Very possibly your best video yet!

Super collection of steam video clips.
Steam trains at speed on Main Line is a awasome video presentation.
As an ex-station Masters worked in South Central Railway, South Eastern Railway on Secunderabad Division (BG) & Waltair Division respectively I had enough experience in passing trains, Marshalling of both passenger and freight trains.
I deeply love the way the crew used to fire & maintain the accurate steam in the engine especially on the ghat section in the rainy days used to run the train at some occasions the wheels were skidding and used to clear the block section with out train parting and used to arrive into the station section on time.
It's really the team spirit the crew and guard and all the operating staff used to unite and ensure the steam locomotive hauling trains with safety and punctuality.
The rythamatic beat of the steam locomotives used to vibrate my heart as and when I used to work at way side stations and passing through the said trains.
I worked as a station master as well as station manager with all the there types of locomotives i.e. Stem, Diesel & Electrical
If any one question which are the most enjoyable times of working with the above three types of locomotives?
I prefer to say that the steam locomotive period is the golden period in which we used to have inbuilt zeal, fitness, enthusiasm, encouragement, well sycncronised team work and used to enjoy the work happily even though it's most strenuous compared to the working of the other two types of locomotives.
I LOVE THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVES FROM THE CORE OF MY HEART.

I wish we can do our locos at that speed here in Indonesia. We do occasionally have steam tour trains but they're all running on a countryside/branchlines, which limits their speed to only 10mph.
