Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has brought yet another mutant into the MCU: Namor, the Sub-Mariner. But what does "mutants" mean in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Is Spider-Man a mutant? We think mutants may soon be used as a scapegoat for the government to crack down on superpowered people--that will lead to Civil War 2, and further divide the heroes before Kang Dynasty.

And we think the introduction of mutants is also setting up a war between mankind and the enhanced, that could explode in phase 6 and beyond. [clip, magneto “the war is here”]
So let’s start with the mutant line itself. “I was a mutant.” When Namor says this is does not imply in anyway that he’s been told [clip, you’re a wizard harry]
Wrong clip. [clip, First Class “you are a mutant”]
Namor hasn’t had a Charlese Xavier recruitment visit. Ms. Marvel’s bestie Bruno didn’t run a test on his blood. [clip, Ms. Marvel, a mutation.]
He simply realized that he shared many differences from the rest of his people. Such as his winged feet, his skin not turning blue when he’s out of the water, his ability to breathe on dry land. And, he ages very slowly. [clip]
Basically, Namor’s power is to tear through his enemies like an M4 sherman tank through a German panther. Or since he can fly, like an F-14 through a Mig 3.
Forget the implications of the word “mutant” in the Marvel universe for just a moment. A mutation can be defined as “an organism that is different from others of its type because of a permanent change in its genes.” [clip, first class, different eye colors.]
Namor has such stark differences from the rest of his people. So, we believe that Namor simply used the term “mutant” as a brief descriptor of his condition. Explaining why he is so different from the rest.
But we as Marvel fans know on a meta level that there’s a lot of meaning behind that word, mutant. [clip]
The Marvel Comics universe is full of super powered people with abilities and physical characteristics that make them standout. But not all of these characters are “mutants.” In the comics, mutants are characters who have an activated mutant X-Gene.
A gene that when activated gives its host special abilities, aka, super powers.
Doug: What do you mean by “activated”?
Good question. People are able to carry the mutant x-gene without showing any signs of a physical mutation or super abilities. But later in life that gene can be activated, giving them their powers and causing a physical transformation. [clip]
Now what causes the activation of the X-Gene isn’t set in stone. We’ve seen the X-Gene be activated from birth, therefore affecting pubescent children. But we’ve also seen examples of it not activating until they reach puberty. [clip]
Another example is when an individual is placed in a cataclysmic situation. Such as Magneto being separated from his mother at a concentration camp. This moment of fear, sadness, and rage brought Magneto's powers to the surface. [clip]
Or take Wolverine for example. When he was a child he was sick and dying. But following the death of the man he believed to be his father, he became enraged. And out popped the bone claws. [clip]
Another example of mutant a gene activation was seen in Deadpool. We saw Wade Wilson undergo literal torture to activate any dorment mutant genes that may be in his genetic coding. [clip]
So, those are the many ways we’ve seen mutant gene activation occur in the comics as well as the Fox X-Men films.
But now we’re in the MCU. A universe that up until recently had no mention whatsoever of mutants. In fact, they were legally barred from even using the word “mutant” or “mutation” in any of their films or tv shows prior to Disney’s acquisition of Fox.
With the MCU now able to use mutants in their projects. The question has become, how do you introduce mutants into an already established universe without it feeling like a massive retcon?
Well, we have a few theories.
It’s been theorized by many that perhaps Thanos’ snap will be responsible for mutants. Perhaps we could see individuals who got snapped away and then blipped back now have a new gene in their genetic coding. A gene created by the power of the 6 infinity stones.

I can see the Mutants pop up as a "villain" at first on Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars. With Kang's reasoning behind the "disappearance" of Mutant kind was because of the Multiversal War and He Who Remains was to blame for it (and played as a meta nod that everything prior to his death was because Fox's X-Men is a separated IP, so their "disappearance" was kinda justified)
Something along the line of "You should've exist way back in the beginning, since you all are Children of the Atom"

I hope they don't make Spider-man have special mutant genes, a large reason WHY Spiderman is such an amazing hero is because ANYONE can be under that mask.
It was just Peter that got bit that day.
People didn't like the whole "Peters dad made the spiders with his dna" twist from TASM 2 because all that did was make Peter "The Chosen One"
the only one in the world who could have ever become spiderman.
We know that Tom Holland has max 4 more solo movies under his belt, due to the scoopers and also Tom himself saying he doesn't wanna play spiderman in his late 30s.
I think Peter will either quit or die and Miles will take his place in phase 8 or 9, so they'll have to explain that Miles also coincidentally has this spider mutant gene.
When an easier explanation COULD be that anyone getting bitten by said spider would grant them powers.

Is Mutate = Mutant tho'? Because in the House of M storyline, a universe where Mutant is above and beyond Human, Spider-Man was considered a public figure in that universe and he's not a Mutant (unless I missed the point where Wanda created the world to include Mutate as Mutant). So I guess Mutate is considered equal to Mutant, but they're inherently different.

My thought was that, like in the second theory, the mutant x-gene exists already in some people and currently requires some form of trigger that activates it. The Banner/Walters family requires gamma radiation, the Maximovs exposure to the mind stone, Parker radioactive bite. The type of trigger also probably effects the type of powers you get. I think to bring the X-men into the MCU there will need to be some event that massively changes the whole planet, perhaps an incursion will create an area of higher cosmic background radiation around earth or something, and after that people born with the x-gene will activate powers without an artificial trigger. Thus creating mutants as we know them in the comics. Longer lived mutants like Logan could already exist in the MCU but just gone unnoticed due to how rare they are.

In the comics, there are "proto-mutants" - mutants that were born with their powers already activated. Supposedly, they're one step back from mutant evolution. In X-lore, the theory was that proto-mutants all died off because humans recognized them at a time when they couldn't fend for themselves, hence the next generation of mutants had their powers triggered during puberty. If you want to investigate more about proto-mutants in Marvel comics, it's pretty obscure but you'd need to direct your search towards "Jamie Madrox, Multiple Man" as the proto-mutant lore mostly revolves around him. Good Luck!

I’m so happy someone is finally touching on this. This has been my working theory for the last year. And every time some thing new comes out and doesn’t discredit it I get so happy. I always simplified it as X gene + bad event + space radiation = super power (mutant). All these things that have kept appearing on planet from space that are suddenly changing everyone. Even though eternals gets a lot of flak I stand by that it’ll probably be one of the more important movies in the grand scheme of things with it’s implications. Especially going forward.

Ive been saying it for years. Mutants in the MCU are children of parents from different realms.
Namor says talocan was reached after a long journay, and doesnt seem to be just some random place. They have to use "magic" in order to access it. Hes a confirmed mutant because of that throwaway line. His mother was a human until she ate the herb, AFTER she was preggers. After she altered her DNA, Namor inherited mutant powers.
Ms. Marvel is the child of a human, and a Noor dimension inhabitant, changing the DNA structure of their kid. My guess is that the bands, ten rings, other cosmic things yet to be introduced, are just meant to focus those powers, and that their macguffin quality will end in their sequels.
Wanda is a funky one, we dont know if either of her parants were either mutants, or if one was a descendant from a different realm dweller, but i do feel like her kids are going to be mutants. Depending on whether or not they try to explain around all the existing incidents in order to confirm all this stuff happening behind the scenes.
However, i believe the nail in the coffin here is Shang chi. He wasnt established as a mutant in the first movie, but i have a feeling well learn soon that hes part of the mutant population, and the activation of his gene might give him additional powers like he had in the comics. His mom, Ta Lo, his dad, human. If we get any info that hes a mutant, itll confirm my theory.
Ms Marvels, statement about labels really makes me thing that the current "culture war" in america will be the setting for the introduction of mutants and the registration act. Well get a new president which will likely be a storyline in the thunderbolts, likely a trump analogue. Then well get a targeted media campaign against mutants, which will kick off their specific story.

Seems like the MCU is hinting that radiation could be something that’s vital to activating mutations. But given the expansion and the meta of the MCU I'm sure things won't be exactly like that..

  • @marchetu9212
    @marchetu9212 Год назад +1

I think we should be seeing, comparatively, many mutants from now on because of the snap but mutants were always there. They were just very rare. That way we can still have myth, legend, and historical context to old mutants (like Namor) and keep the Maximoff twins as mutants, but moving forward we’ll see many more because of the snap. And it’s not necessarily the people who were snapped. The universe felt the radiation from the use of the stones 4 times (Thanos twice, Hulk, and Tony). That is a lot of radiation so, like having too many x-rays, it could cause mutations. But just like having many x-rays can increase your chances of mutations (usually seen in the form of higher chances of cancer) there is no guarantee of having mutations. If anything, the people who were not snapped away would have a higher chance of getting mutations that give them powers because, as stated above, they experienced infinity stone snap radiation 4 times compared to the people who experienced 2 snaps.

If Carol Danvers, Bruce Banner, and Steve Rogers are all mutants, what makes Professor X or Cyclops special? Outside of their respective abilities, of course.
I love the idea of the blip having something to do with sparking genetic mutation in humans with the X-Gene. The mutants deserve an origin that gives them a proper rise within the MCU. They should be teased, built up to, and explored. Also, I'd love to see an adaptation of Marvel's Civil War II. It was a great story.

Mutants are people that have a power embedded in their DNA from birth and it is activated through Puberty/stress . Mutates are people that gain their powers through an outside cause. Spider-Man, The Hulks, The Super-Soldiers, Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, etc; got their powers from an outside cause (Radioactive spider, Gamma radiation, Super-Soldier serum, The Tesseract, Wanda’s chaos magic), but Wanda, Pietro, Kamala & now Namor had it in their genes and either puberty or stress caused it (Apartment explosion allowed Wanda to stop the 2nd shell explosion & probably unlocked Pietro’s superspeed, Kamala’s stress after the kree bangle showed her the noor dimension plus being at AvengerCon, and Namor watching the British enslave his people when going to bury his mother)

If it were me running things, I would establish mutations have alway been among us. I would debut X-Men concurrently with the Fantastic 4, revealing that they first came into prominence in the 1960s. And whereas the FF disappeared in their origin story, prompting them to be considered lost and irrelevant to the previous MCU phases until they re-emerge in their upcoming film, mutants would have an origin wherein their struggle was entwined with the Equal Rights Movement in the 60s. I would have the origin end in a huge confrontation where someone did a similar thing to comicbook Wanda's "No More Mutants." And what that did was remove mutants from collective consciousness, not existence itself. The handful that became "known" in the 60s were suddenly unknown, much like the Peter Parker spell. Then a future phase shows that worldwide effect lifted by some event and mutants become known again. (Kinda like The Sentry's comics origin too.) And perhaps a good way to do it is when the Skrull invasion is discovered. Perhaps something is done to try to reveal them all in hiding (think ending of They Live) and a byproduct of that event also reveals the cosmically redacted knowledge of mutants through the decades. That's the general story I'd pitch.

Honestly, I've always thought the most straightforward answer to "Why haven't we seen mutants yet?" has been to just look at the first X-Men movie, or the first episode of the cartoon, or X-Men First Class:
They are a newly emerging phenomenon, the scientific community has just gotten up to speed to even classify them, and the few mutants who were around were mostly isolated, and certainly didn't KNOW they were "mutants", just that they were special.
The way I always understood it was first people within the mutant community recognized each other, then people in certain branches of science and government became aware, but it wasn't until some tipping point event made them visible to the world-at-large.
So basically, we HAVE been seeing either some mutants, or at least a world where they lurked in the shadows. I mean, the X-Men have to start SOMEWHEN, might as well be now.

i think if they just decided to start declaring any mf with powers as a mutant, that would be an INSANE misstep.
having the classification of being a mutant is what separates the X-Men from all the other heroes in the comics. a group of super humans that are hated by the whole world while there’s other heroes like the Avengers who are celebrated like celebrities is hands down one the most interesting concepts from the comics- abandoning that would be a shame.
i’ll let Kamala slide considering she’s actually an Inhuman in the comics and MCU 616 doesn’t have Inhumans yet (that we know of)- just as long as they don’t make her an X-Man.

I think more relevant than the reveal is the reaction. That's what is telling. Neither Kamala or Suri act like the idea of mutation/mutants was outrageous. Or even like they never heard of it.Other thing VERY IMPORTANT RYAN DID NOR MENTION: Namor is about 500 years old. It's very hard to believe he's the only human being that mutated in the last 5 centuries. Clearly there are more mutants around the MCU. Some probably for a very long time. Remember Mr Immortal from the She Hulk. He's imortal ( duh) and a mutant.
I strongly believe MCU will take that "mutants were always here" aproach.

    • @markstriker925
      @markstriker925 Год назад

I think the "they were always there" approach should be mixed in with one of the theories where mutants are created by the blip or an incursion. Blip would create new/more mutants. While old mutants like Wolverine can always be there via the first theory. So it's the best of both worlds.

I commented on one of your videos about the differences between Mutants and Mutates. Basically, Mutates are enhanced beings who got powers due to their DNA being mutated on a molecular level, eg; Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain Murica, Captain Marvel, Bucky, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, etc.
Mutants are those who are born with mutated DNA, the X-Gene, which awakens mutant powers when they are under extreme stress. Francis pretty much nailed it.
But I have a theory, that the Vibranium meteorites were sent from Arishem for the new Celestials body, the Celestial incubating within Earth.
There could have been multiple meteorites of Vibranium that scattered across the Earth, so that it can absorb the cosmic energy surrounding and on earth, which then feeds into Tiamut. Maybe even Anti Vibranium in Antarctica, since Celestials need various abilities and Various Vibranium strands can afford that.
But due to the Vibranium that have been here since the Dinosaurs, they have mutated life forms like plants in Wakanda and Talokan. This could have also mutated human DNA when humans were evolving from fungi and other lifeforms, hence leading to humans possessing the latent X Gene.
In the MCU so far, it isn't powerful enough yet to be awakened to create the race of Mutants. But due to multiple snaps with the cosmic energy from the Infinity Gauntlet that had cosmic energy readings like never seen before, that wave of energy could have stirred the X Gene within humans who had it, thus awakening it from its sleep mode. But the person then has to undergo extreme stress to fully activate this X-Gene.

Eternals and Deviants are the key to bring mutants into MCU. I think they are already there but they very rare but cause the snap it awaken it that dormant in humans. Eternal movie is key to everything I think a million years ago a Deviant join with a Eternal and in turn it (they) started to breed with humans life on the earth. I think there were few active mutants before the snaps.

    • @sanitizerwilson1599
      @sanitizerwilson1599 Год назад

The answer lays in the movie Eternals I think that Deviate infect an Eternal 10,000 years ago or more, this Hybrid started to breed with Homosapiens or maybe Neanderthals this form a gene in the offspring. Call the X-gene.
