Namor was one of the most compelling villains in the MCU. His backstory, goals, and society are completely relatable, and he also serves as a perfect counterpoint to Wakandan Society. In this video we break down the motivations of one of the greatest villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how he can affect Black Panther 3 and the secret Avengers movies.

Ryan, as a Mayan descent, I am pretty proud of how you covered our history. The way you cover all sorts of history is well-informed, respectful, and filled with nuance. I'm in grad school and I'm working on a documentary on my people's history of Guatemala. The last couple of years were the first time I learned about the coup attempt in 1950 and the genocide in the 70s through 80s on the Mayans. My father fought in the last war, as well as some of my uncles. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the events. I'm in this place where I would want the US to announce an apology for the coup, but power never seems to be able to bestow itself any humility.
I'd love to see that documentary whenever you finish it.
🇬🇹
I would love to see your documentary also. Do you have a website where it will be posted?
Also, I think America may never apologize for the coup in Guatemala. If it apologizes for the Guatemalan coup America will have to apologize for the MANY coups, civil wars, etc that it supported in one way or another.
Brilliant, I'd like to see it too
You made me appreciate the entire film more

@@Cesar_Bravo you typed "type" the correct way. The auxiliary verb "did" is already in past tense, so you're good there. Irony huh? it's just a matter of getting down the grammar for both of y'all.
Anyways Mayans did live in parts of southern Mexico so you could be related. Who knows 🤷
I'm glad they gave him a nuanced backstory and motivation (and was a little reluctant that it wasn't Atlantis, but setting it in the Yucatan worked well). I mention just for the sake of those who haven't read X-Men, that he's a complex villain because he eventually comes to join that team. And hopefully we see him join a rebooted X-men as well.

Actually, I figured namor logically would join the X-Men, makes perfect sense
Just admit it Ryan. You loved Wakanda Forever and Namor with his people and all their history in it. I appreciate it. I love Namor too
This comment killed me
Seems like gringos don't even trying to care about Mayan or even Mexican mythology. This Namor BS is just to milk out the Latino market. We are so glad it just flops, they won't dare to bring out such a massive failure concept to another movie.
Namor 👑 and Talokan are amazing

Truly these compounding government focused team up stories would be an awesome return to form for the MCU, and it seems like that is the direction they are going in, but tbh, we still have no real confirmation that this is the direction that Feige and the MCU will go in despite having dropped words like destabilization and referencing Brave New World and teasing Young Avengers. I guess I just don't have faith at this point that the MCU would deliver on anything close to a cohesive multi film narrative as awesome as this sounds. I feel that they might get close to teasing all of this, but since channels like Screencrush already called it, Feige or the individual directors/showrunners will want to change it to something else to maintain some sort of element of surprise, and then those changes result in another Secret Invasion level story where everything is watered down and tame compared to the potential epicness that they set up and could've delivered on. I guess only time will tell!
😊😊😮..
You
That first encounter with Namor will always feel mythical to me, a strange guy wearing non-wakandan clothing in Wakandan territory just marvels about the stories his mother told him while being half naked without care of possibly getting attacked. His presence alone was thrilling.
The complexity and the morally gray aspects made me love this movie.
Most the villains are always right, from KillMonger to Ultron. The only problem is, they go to “extremes” with their point. Namor was right but he wanted the WRONG ppl dead & wanted a child dead, instead of just finding another way to have her not make the machine.
In all fairness, with Riri out of the picture, anyone wanting a vibranium detector would have to start from scratch. Remember, the government didn't bother to take the time to understand how her machine works, they just took her prototype directly into the field. Even Shuri was surprised to see the machine because she also didn't think such a device was possible. so no Riri Williams, no detector. Namor had the right idea, even if the ethics of it is questionable.
Well no Namor wasn't even the villain in the movie for me it was the government and shuri who couldn't deal with her grief and instead let it consume her this movie destroyed shuri as a character and I hate the movie for it.
Yeah. It’s like Legend of Korra. The villains in the show are ones that bring a good point about the world they live in, but they go to extreme lengths to get to them.
I mean if Riri dies so does her knowledge keeping his people safe
@@Juan_Dominguez or he could have found her, told her his story, and asked if she wanted to live with his people. she might have said yes. done. problem solved. but instead....

HE. HAS. WRITERS!!! wake up
Namor is one of the best characters the MCU has introduced
Marvel needs to hire this guy!!! He tied everything together so well & made it sound so entertaining. Solid writing & structure is the only things that will save the MCU.
Thank you for sharing this. For me, all Namor’s reasons were obvious and by far justified; so I was surprised that many people called Namor “a weak villain without proper motivation”. I sympathize with him, I admire him as a leader of his nation and I hope we see more of him in the future.
To me Shuri is much more villain than Namor. I think Namor is in the right
Now this was a rather interesting explanation of things. The Young Avengers in Kang Dynasty and the rationale for a secret Avengers movie? That would be DOPE! And I agree with Namor being justified in his beliefs, by the way.

To clarify, there was no misunderstanding in WW I. The assassination of Francis Ferdinand d'Este was only a pretext for starting the war. For example, Germany has been preparing for such a pretext for a long time.

This is the best of the first sequel of these movies, I very much loved this movie while the loss of Chadwick was tragic, they honored him by not recasting him and by him having a son is in a way recasting tchalla without recasting Chadwick, WF is severely underrated
This opened my eyes to some of the movies' nuances. When Shuri said "This will mean war" I found that statement weird the first time. I thought "You getting kidnapped already meant war was likely. Why are you surprised?" But now that I look back, I see that she wasn't just NOT kidnapped, but she was also genuinely connecting with Namor there. She saw the bigger picture that Riri was involved in and was doing good as a political leader to understand Namor and his people. I also see that this whole mess between Wakanda and Talokan was founded more on a misunderstanding and miscommunication than anything else. I genuinely think that if Shuri had more time and Queen Ramonda understood the situation better, a peaceful solution could've been found. They may have even become genuine allies. But that one misunderstanding regarding Shuri's disappearance led to an absolute cascade of horrible events and, eventually, war.
Can we talk about how perfect it was that Namor got his name
El Niño Sin Amor
The boy without love - shortened to Namor
Unless that’s from the comics. Give the person who created that a raise
Not from the comics (his birth name is Namor), GIVE THAT PERSON ALL THE MONEY!!!
Completely respect your opinion but I thought it was a bit iffy tbh. People would hardly go out of their way to call someone the boy without love. They'd call him the devil kid, the freak sea thing, something like that. The sin amor thing might make sense with the name namor but doesn't fully make sense as a nickname/ way to refer to him
The Comic version was named Namor, the guy who created the character just spelled Roman backwards.
I’ve learned more about Mayans from this video then school great work
Kids In The Hall clips? This channel has everything!
The govt has Iron Heart’s machine and can replicate it, killing her would do absolutely NOTHING. It’s hard to understand why the storywriters ignored this fact.

Dude that's the Aztec sun stone. The mayan calendar looks like a bike chain wheel
And let’s give it up to Winston Duke! What an actor!
Great video. Namor is definitely up on current events, in an early draft of the script it is explained Talokan developed their own optic fiber technology, allowing them to intercept outside communications and in the movie, it is also stated he visits the surface every now and then. His actions are indeed based on his experience by having observed humanity destroy and oppress others for hundreds of years. I think the MCU's portrayal of Namor and the potential for exploring the rich cultural lore and complexity surrounding his character provide an exciting opportunity for storytelling and world-building. I can't wait to see what will Namor's next move will be in future movies or even a standalone project of his own.
Even in the movie, the local remaining humans on Yucatan that Shuri speak with appear to know Namor. It would be great to see that Namor had also actually tapped the real-life underwater cables that still connect much of the Internet as it did the landlines.
It's not "special Wakandan tech stuff"; the plant from Talokan, and the herb found by Bashenga aren't the same thing.
They even make the point of calling it "98%", so it's simply "almost" the same thing.
That small difference is likely made up by something unique to the Talokan plant, namely the healing factor that has their warriors getting up from stabbings, and surviving bullet attacks (while killing them when hit by sonic weaponry, the same type of sonic knowledge that makes Vibranium inert for transport).
That bit of healing factor will likely be present for every other person to consume the "almost" Heart-shaped Herb going forward (unless the OG herb eventually sprouts again in the burned garden
Ok, first off Namor IS attacking for vengeance. Revenge against the surface world for the death of his mother first, his royal subjects(killed by Nakia) second. Yes, Namor is worshipped as a god but whoever serves as the Black Panther serves as the earthly avatar of the Panther god Bast. And last, whoever thought Shuri was going to just be chill with her mother’s murder and NOT go bat crap crazy is stoopid! Namor had that butt whoopin coming!
Nice video
As great as it would be to find out Marvel had secret movies tucked away, I don't think there is anyway they or Disney would hide that. Based on what they have made since Endgame, I sadly don't have high expectations for what is to come.
It really sucks that William Hurt passed away. It would have been great to see him in his character arc all the way from Incredible Hulk through Civil War and to the Thunderbolts and beyond. Harrison Ford isn't bad, but it will feel like a disconnect to have a new actor.

Yeah they dropped the ball in epic fashion with Secret Invasion the acting was good but they didn't deliver visually or with the storyline it should have been 9 episodes and an hour long it could've been epic like the lone season of watchmen but I do see what it's setting up they just ruined a great story. Loki is the one thing that is maintaining my faith in the MCU
I've had Wakanda Forever as my 3rd favorite MCU film since the 4th time I saw it in theaters for these very reasons.
Your video wants me to go see it again.
I do hope your theory comes true as the MCU NEEDS some sort of connectivity.

Hayward wasn't the villain of WandaVision, Wanda was. He was trying to save a town that she had captured and enslaved.
And then he tried to kill kids for it :v
@@raynelfastination - Wanda spent an entire movie trying to kill a kid
Both things can be true. Pretty sure Hayward is a villain regardless. And Wanda was considered more of unintentional villain. That changed with DSMOM.. but for WV, she was unaware through most of it that she was hurting people. Hayward wasn't portrayed as a complex character unfortunately but just a military thug IMO
Hayward manipulated Wanda into creating the Westview Hex so he could steal Vision's soul to activate his Frankenstein project. Hayward is definitely the antagonist of Wandavision.

I know this is necromancy on an old video from 6 days ago but its the first MCU one I saw...
A cool fact about MCU -- THIS OCTOBER 2023 is when Avengers: Endgame "takes place"
By most estimates, Oct 3rd is when Scott Lang suddenly reappears and by Oct 17th the Battle of Earth is in full-swing
You or maybe MT should do a video discussing it/revisting Endgame

I wish they go that route you explained at the end of your video but, I doubt they do😂
yea this is good Screencrush content but unfortunately I think we all can see that the MCU just isn't capable to tell a story this good anymore. They don't have (or rather, would likely not invest in) the organization skills, the writing talent, the directorial talent, nor the political will to pull off a multifilm story arc of this magnitude...
The Marvel Atlantis Attacks series...from the 90s was awesome ..that is what we need. All Hail Namor.

Didn't read the comics - but Namor was a hero / villain at times, yes? (more black and white than that, I know)... I feel like we may need a NAMOR IS A GOOD GUY / AVENGER uptick in his character, before then giving us the TWIST, JK HE'S STILL JUST LOOKING OUT FOR HIMSELF moment of starting a war or anything. Wakanda Forever set him up to PLAY BALL... so I think we'll get that BEFORE we get him doing war-ish stuff. Character Development / ebbs and flows, y'all.
He at one point was a participant in in WWII with Bucky among others. It would be interesting to see their MCU counterparts interact. I suspect that the Winter Soldier was also deployed in Latin America. On the other hand, with Bucky's debt and friendship with Wakanda, it would be interesting for him to use his experiences to be bridge.
This is the "State of the MCU" that should have been presented after "End Game" by K. Feige! Would have made Phase 4 make complete sense! Thanks for the great content!

This has been my favorite video of yours. I love the breakdown and discussion of the murky waters we're currently in, in the MCU. Also, I've been wondering when the young avengers would show up. I hope you are right.
Oh I like this!!!
This is a broader and more generous interpretation of the film than I've seen elsewhere and gives me a deeper and more nuanced appreciation of this telling of the Wakanda/Namor relationship. The MCU still tried to cram too much into the movie by introducing Iron Heart here. I'm surprised your review leaves out the historical reality of human sacrifice among the Mayans, which perhaps levels the Mayans with other cultures in as much corruption abounds, even as respective beauty abounds among cultures--from colonizers to the colonized.
There needs to be an ongoing mcu geopolitics project, secret wars should have been that. The best we have at keeping track of all this is She-Hulk of all things. My suggestion is to continue Hawkeye away from new york and get kate Bishop sticking her nose into things ranging from organised crime all the way up to superpower spy games. (My real suggestion is to soft reboot agents of shield but we nnow that aint happening.)
This is actually "low key" one of the best videos that Screen Crush has made. Simple, clear, honest, candid reveal of motivations and being honest about the wickedness of imperialism and wester interests. Yes, the nuanced complexity of Wakanda Forever was its main saving grace. Because the Riri character introduction and so-called development was really trash, smh. Great work. Please keep up the amazing work.
I never gave one 💩 about Namor as a kid reading comics. But his portrayal in the movie, particularly the scene wherein he explains his Name. “ …because I have no love for the surface world.”
Also, Nakia should have just let Shuri try to help but nope, left them there to die
