    Really glad to see an update, Browney! Personally, I’d love to see a SOHC build, just for the obscurity and interest, too many of them get tossed away now. I love how they sound too, classic E-Series Falcon note.
    That name you uncovered will be from a worker at Broadmeadows, on the assembly line. A little Easter egg on these cars!

    Re the rear guard: to be honest , it doesn't look bad enough to need replacing ... it's a pretty big job compared to straightening out what's on it now! . But , if you must change it , here's a quick version of the process:
    Remove rear bar , window , rear seat , all of the c pillar trimming (inside and out) , parcel shelf , rh rear door pinch weld and anything rubber or cloth that can be burned by weld (I'd even advise the removal of the carpet inside the car) , oh and the back wheel - as there are spot welds under the wheel arch . You can buy specific drill bits to drill spot welds , you'll also need a hammer and a nice sharp chisel to cut away the panel , they're also glued in spots (like between the two panels at the wheel arch) . and , the time it takes to cut and weld the outer panel of the c pillar , you may as well go all the way to the roof . 👍
    I'd highly advise trying to repair the one on it first though , and if that fails you can move on to replacing!

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  Год назад +1

      Thanks Andrew, not committed to replacing it yet but still leaning that way. I have the tools here for it I think and have the panel there, but I have very few tools for straightening the one on it - and even less ability. Got to learn somehow but not sure this is the one for it.
      Thinking I can get a better result going to the more work intensive but less skilled route, especially now that I think there's rust starting above the rear windscreen so wouldn't hurt to sort that now too. I'll have a play around though and see how we go, appreciate you taking the time to reply and lay it out for me mate.

    I agree the sohc engine does produce a nice note, when you rebuild the engine use a hypereutectic piston this is a upgrade that will handle the higher compression and heat, swap the inlet manifold from a ef/el onto the engine this will increase torque and hp , use crow cam valve springs and cam, learn how to do a basic port and polish job on the head to increase flow and overall performance or you can purchase 1 already done from cylinder head warehouse in Brisbane,

    • @BrowneysGarage

      Sounds like we're thinking along the same lines. Already have a head there with a bit of port job and deck so a bit of extra compression to boot! Would like to do a comparison with the BBM manifold as well for myself, sure it will come out on top but curious all the same.

    Grouse house Browney! I'm glad you're sticking with the SOHC, you're totally right, they sound mad.
    When you're looking for painting equipment, you basically have 3 options:
    1. Spray cans - Pros: cheap, low entry point, forgiving - Cons: Poor overall finish without wetsanding and buffing later, excess waste
    2. High HP, low volume air compressor (like the 50L 2.5HP ones from Supercheap) and a LVLP spray gun - Pros: Relatively cheap for what you're doing, decent finish off the gun, you'll learn a lot about professional spray painting - Cons: only decent finish, not as good as a professional result, costs more than just spray cans if you're only doing one job
    3. High HP, high volume air compressor and an HVLP spray gun - Pros: best results, learn the most, professional quality results if executed correctly - Cons: very expensive and a learning curve to overcome to get to those professional results
    I highly recommend watching the Gunman's channel on RUclips and Paint Society as well. Those two channels will help you the most on your technique and required prep. Good luck with it all mate!

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  Год назад +2

      Thanks Brendan.
      I'm pretty in line with your thinking there. The spray cans can end up surprisingly expensive still to get decent coverage in my (limited) experience and still not get a great result. Currently leaning towards splashing a little on compressor and doing it fairly legit like option 3 - thinking I could get something suitable for $1k mark for compressor that would be just capable of doing bigger jobs as well one day.
      Have watched a bit of Gunman and will go through more again as the job approaches, will also suss out Paint Society now thanks mate. If you haven't ever checked it out Peter Anderson did some great work at home on a smaller setup and is self admittedly not a painter, which gives me hope (although he'd probably be a gun at most anything he turned his attention to it seems!).

    This looks exciting. Something different from a Barra Swap into EVERYTHING!
    *With the engine you could consider an AU engine swap. Far more around than the Barra and is basically a Barra with one camshaft. Would be cheaper too. There is also a lot of info and previous projects done with them. I know of an AU engine in an ED that was turbo'd and drag raced that was very successful. Something to consider?
    *With the sunroof I would expect Windscreens O'Brien, or similar, would have some knowledge on them and how to fit/fix them. Considering the ED is there you might be able to use its head lining and just rip up the EB one out.
    *For the 1/4 panel I'd suggest cutting out the section that is damaged on the EB and get the same metal from the ED and butt weld it in. It's a huge job to do the whole rear 1/4 for anyone that hasn't welded before and it could turn into a nightmare. There will be things you didn't consider that will dampen your enthusiasm for sure. You would certainly need a lot more tools than if you did what I am suggesting. MIGs are now cheap and there are plenty of welding tutorials here on YT that you could learn from.
    *My last suggestion is get it registered asap. You certainly won't have to explain yourself about the mods than later when you try to get it registered. Just a thought and a little experience I've had as a suggestion.
    MOST IMPORTANT is this is YOUR project and YOUR car. Anyone that tells you what you "should do" or calls you names for not doing what they would aren't here to support what YOU want! You hear it so often on other channels, Hand Built by Jeff comes to mind. If you change your mind and want to put in a Mercedes Diesel from a Sprinter van in then that's your choice. I'd actually follow that because it would be very different!!! You could even fit Ford Territory suspension and running gear with the Mercedes engine!!!....................Sorry, lost my mind for a tick.
    Good luck! I'll be watching every episode!

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  Год назад +1

      G'day Glen!
      Too right, the SOHC is staying.
      Believe I tried Windscreen O'Brien at one point for it and they were less than useless! Could have just got the wrong person on the other end though. And unfortunately the headlining is gone, anything fabric started to get mould when some moisture got in while being stored at my mates 🤢
      Funny, a mate has said similar regarding the quarter, and I'm not ruling it out. In my head I just see running a weld through a large panel like that as I would need to as more "body work" and more to stuff up than what I think is more tedious BUT less body work in replacing the whole quarter - especially when using another factory panel. Could be completely wrong but I will be looking at the options closer as I go. Already have a good amount of tools and MIG here, no sheet metal welding experience but at least some very basic welding behind me.
      I'm 110% with you on the last one! Both for the reason you mentioned, and because I feel like long term projects that can't be driven often go no where and get flogged off later. This will have to be an exercise in some restraint because it will not be perfect any time soon, maybe ever - perhaps that's a good thing though!
      Haha thanks Glen! Staying SOHC 6 for sure... although a little Windsor fits straight in there as well and would sound even better. NO, stick with what we have for now.

    I’m not a panel beater, but replacing that rear 1/4 looks like a massive job. Wouldn’t you be better off giving it another go at trying to straighten the damage and fix any spots of rust. I reckon it will do your head in trying to get everything to line back up once that whole panel is removed and you’ll regret it. Just my non panel beater opinion.

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  Год назад

      All (well, most!) opinions are welcome here. Legit panel beating like that would take some proper skill that takes a lot of time to learn and finesse - I don't have much of either most the time! As big a job it seems, I believe replacing will actually give the best result for a hack, especially with the rust and sections potentially needing replacing anyway.
      But that's all just another none panel beaters opinion, we'll see 😂

    If I could hear the sohc in my Ltd over the rattles from the lifters then it may sound better than my Barra wgn ,trick is to get rid of that resonator on the sohc,I have a sportsman nc and it just snaps when I blip the throttle.

    Please keep the SOHC in the Fairmont. You already have a Barra. I have two factory LS cars and a VS 5 litre im rebuilding to a 355. Yes it will make more power LS swapped but Id rather keep it old school. PLus you have one of each.
