  • Arrow Films 4K UHD release of Brian De Palma's 1976 classic 'CARRIE'. In the USA Shout Factory have issued this but I don't know if the grading and HDR on each disc is identical. This Arrow Films disc is about as perfect as possible so I hope Shout Factory have issued an identical disc. Packed with extra features and extra items from just £30 which included post card sized reproductions of the full eight front of house set, the original US one sheet poster at about one-third scale (reversible with the new cover design on the other side) and a 40 page book. All packaged in a tough box and even with a slip cover to go over that box.
    Image aspect ratio is 1.85:1 and default sound is the original mono but with an option for DTS-HD 5.1 which has to be specifically selected from the menu.

    The Arrow 4k has a higher bit rate than the USA Scream factory version. Get the Arrow 4k folks.

      Thank you for this good information which I'm pinning to the top of the comments. Whether or not the higher bit rate will make a perceptible difference is open to question but it's a good started point when deciding which of the two differing versions to choose. John.

    Arrow has been killing it with these releases. i wish they would get the rights to Dances with wolves and give us a limited edtion set for that film like this. That movie deserves a 4k set.

      Spot on Paul. Arrow Films would be ideal for Dances With Wolves. But I hope the extended version doesn't see the light of day again as it spoils the film so much. Show those additions as outtakes but leave it at that. Other opinions are available! John.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  4 месяца назад +1

      I find that it's getting better and better every time I watch it. All the nuances I see today just weren't there when I watched it as a 15 or 16 year old. It's too clever a film for an adolescent boy and that's the difference compared to films of a similar nature today because they tend to be silly rather than clever. John.

    Great to see you feature my all-time favourite movie here, John. I saw it on initial release and loved it so much that I saw it 6 times in the cinema back then. Ever since it came out on home video rental and then sell-through, I’ve watched it at least once a year and I’ve owned every format since VHS, too.
    I own the Scream Factory 4K and to my old eyes, the Arrow seems a little sharper - perhaps they did their own mastering on it?
    I wish they had done even a couple of new features as other than the new transfer, it’s exactly the same as the Blu Ray set they put out a few years ago, but they don’t seem to do that with their 4K upgrades of recent releases.
    Regardless, it’s the best this film has ever looked and would highly recommend to anyone who didn’t pick up the Arrow blu ray.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад

      That's good information about the Scream Factory release David because I've not had much feedback from people who have both the Scream and Arrow versions. Only one other I think. I expect both companies did have their own mastering done as that explains any minor difference.
      It sounds like you didn't get the Super 8 releases though so you'll have to rectify that if you want to be a top CARRIE fan! And if you find unfaded copies then I'll want to know about it. I'm sure they're out there as I believe the prints were being struck well after 1982 but finding them will be the problem.
      John.

    Your enthusiasm for this film is effectively conveyed in this review, John…! Do you get chance to discuss your thoughts on what dupes, IPs, INs or original camera negs may have been used to create the disc release master? Lastly, yes, please be encouraged to continue creating “similar content to this”… all the best, Steve

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад +1

      Evening Stephen. I don't think anyone has information on how many dupe sequences have had to be inserted into a negative but I expect many of them suffer damage, particularly a negative that has been used to create more first generation master prints than most. 2001: A Space Odyssey is probably the most used negative in history in this regard as so many 70mm release prints were struck directly from it. It does mean the 4K disc of that one is a little variable in places but Carrie may still be completely intact. I did pick up on odd scenes being a little more grainy and possibly not so well defined which does indicate dupes have been inserted. Whatever is the case, this 4K has been sourced from a transfer of the negative and not the interpositive or internegative. John.

    The editing for the final "jump" moment back at the house ruins always gets me. I can't think of another that is as well timed. But wht made me surprised is that I missed something earlier. I was watching an extract being shown (perhaps at Deranns stand at a photo show and a girl was watching. I think she would have been much too young to sdee it at the cinema, but as Piper Laurie was being impaled the girl looked at her and said "She's enjoying it!" I've never watched that scene again without thinking that she was right and I missed it!!!!

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  4 месяца назад

      I think we were all a little too young to appreciate all the little nuances in CARRIE back then Brian. It's getting better and better every time I watch it because I'm getting older and more adept and spotting every last detail. As for a better jump in a film, how about PHANTASM when the Tall Man brings his hand down on Jody's shoulder? "The funeral is about to begin... Sir!" We always turned the volume up for that and all our friends would jump out of their seats. Hilarious. John.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад +1

      I think it's down to demographics Darth. Back in the 1970's there was a general audience and that's why great films like The Omen and The Shining appeared. This gradually shifted to a younger audience and why there weren't so many quite so grown up horrors in the 1980's. Today it's mainly teenagers going to the cinema so movies are aimed at that age and a bit above. Halloween in 1978 was more aimed at a younger audience but that had class that is somewhat lacking today. Carrie was similar in that regard now that I think about it. John.

    Yes, despite the old blu-ray coming from what seems to be the exact same 4k scan as the new 4k, the 4k looks miles better than the blu ray did. I really hope that Arrow stick with this slipcover packaging on their limited editions because it is much better than when they just have the paper sleeve with all the information taped on the back which is very annoying because I never know to take it off and throw it away or to try and keep it on even though it keeps slipping around. This slipcover method is MUCH MUCH nicer than that and hopefully they stick with this kind of packaging.

      John I have got some questions about Super 8. Like how did/ does Super 8 work? Is it like cutdowns of films that cut the runtime down to 20 minutes or so? I was just wondering how it worked cos it seems interesting.
      I just started wondering because as a bonus feature on my Shivers (1975) blu-ray it actually comes with a 1080p scan of the "Super 8 version" which was the film condensed into about 20 minutes.

    Enjoyed the review. Now Carrie in 4k is on my list of must haves on 4k. Great Stephen King to movie transfer masterfully done by Brian DePalma. I used to read Stephen King a lot. Another one I found quite enjoyable is Christine and its subsequent book to movie transference. In my opinion the "king" of these is Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining which also looks great in 4k.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  11 дней назад

      The Shining certainly looks exceptionally good Daniel and perhaps an illustration of how superior 35mm is even when it's cropped down to about two-thirds of the frame area. There have been some excellent quality movies shot on video though so a few probably just about match up. Carrie is very good as a 4K disc and looks just like it should.

      I know a lot of players don't come with phono outputs any longer but there are devices that attach to an HDMI to break the sound down into various physical outputs. That would make running the sound out to a stereo amplifier a little easier perhaps. I have one of those devices - cost about £15 and it has a pair of phono outputs and an optical. Works perfectly whenever I need to use it at an event. John.

      It's a class act Andy but some may find some of the bullying and a few bits of violence upsetting or difficult to watch. There were good horrors through the 1980's too, that's for sure. I'm not sure the 80's quite matches up to the 1970's though. When you start to list them out there were so many classics in the 70's and it seems to have started to tail off in the early 1980's and that's possibly because those of us who were lapping them up were getting older and moving on. Films like The Exorcist, The Omen and The Shining were probably of universal appeal rather than teenagers and twenty somethings though. Even Jaws could perhaps go in that list. What a time for movies and horror movies in particular.

    Ok, I just watched Carrie for the first time. Very fascinating! I noticed that one long camera shot at the prom. That was impressive. I also found the character design for the religious mother interesting. They chose to give her a dark cloak and long red hair, like the classic look of a witch. And their home was like a dark, haunted cathedral. I'm not sure how I feel about how the story ended for the main character. It didn't feel genuine and more like they needed a quick way to wrap up the story. I will say though, for the final sequence (spoiler alert) I said to myself, "this will totally redeem the ending for me if she bursts out of rubble and grabs her" AND SHE DID!!! I burst out laughing and applauded, I can't believe I called it. haha This was a good movie. It left me with a strange mix of calm compassion and disgust. We spent £2K on this one but the entry level projector was around £900. A bargain. Biggest thing to making your living room into a cinema is to envelop the projected image with a black frame. Motorized masking isn't what I'm talking about here but if you project onto a white wall then black card on picture hooks so that it can be removed after a show will do just as well.

    Dammit John! You've just made me spend another £30!! 🤣 I've got the Arrow Blu-ray, which is excellent, but you can't have too much Carrie, especially in 4K! First time I saw the film was in the early 1990s on Sky Movies. The final jump scare literally made me leap out of my chair (I think I was about 17 when I saw the film!) Funny thing with the opening: I'd only ever seen the 'alternate' version where all the actresses in the locker room had towels around them - I think I'd remember the opening otherwise!!. Back in the day, I recorded a lot of movies on VHS and later copied a number of recordings on to DVD until decent transfers showed up! I was kinda shocked (not in a bad way! 😄) when I watched the Blu-ray! Holy moley!!
    What I pick up on nowadays is all the Psycho references. Obviously, a variant of the Psycho shower scene music sting is used several times, but also there are little things like Carrie attending Bates High School!! I watched the original Friday the 13th recently and that's also full of Psycho references, including musical ones, just as Halloween is. I guess it's telling that a bunch of filmmakers of a similar age all made films that referenced Hitchcock's film. They must all have been mesmerised by Psycho as children.
    Carrie's just a wonderful film across the board. So inventive. Stephen King said he actually considered it to be superior to the novel, which is a decent read in itself! Haven't seen Rage. Might have a look for that one as well!! Occasionally you get 'impossible' sequels such as Psycho 2 that actually work! I loved seeing your personal film copies of Carrie. I love it when companies get hold of those reels and include them on their discs. Sadly it happens all too rarely! Thanks for another great review. Dominic Husband 🙂

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  5 месяцев назад +2

      It is a wonderful film Dominic and it's not often we can say that about horror movies today. But is it a thriller rather than a horror? That was something I was going to talk about but I decided the video was already getting too long. The Derann 2x400ft extract reels tell two different parts of the story and are cleverly done (I think by my long time BFCC colleague Ken Locke when he was a film editor at the BBC) but I didn't know him at the time the reels were issued. Working out the correct order each sequence from each of the two reels needed to be re-cut into took some working out and I'm not certain I got everything exactly right but it works. I got the DVD seen in this video to rip the sound off and cut it to match the final Super 8 2x400ft I had to re-record it into stereo but then the print showed evidence of fading and I rather lost interest. If I could find those reels again but printed post 1982 on low fade stock then I'd buy them all over again and get on with the re-recording even though the 4K disc is superior in every respect. There is just something about having a film on film. And in that regard I've been playing with my Kinoton FP20 35mm projector recently and having one or two ups and downs so I might put a video together all about it.
      John.

      You'll have to let me know how good the Arrow Blu-ray of CARRIE is Lborg because I haven't seen it. I haven't seen Reservoir Dogs either but don't get too carried away with how that looks because it was only a Super 35mm shoot so if it does look exceptional it's probably because the Kodak Eastman EXR 50D stock is a fine grain but it's not one I know about. All recent 70mm shoots will produce better results as the image area is three times the size. Sometimes it takes a pretty big projection to tell the difference between the good 4K discs. John.

    Yeah I've got the Shout Factory 4k Steelbook imported from states, fantastic. Great film, when horror films truly were horror films i.e. intelligent, had a story... didn't have annoying poor acting... the main two are incredible in this film. Lovely. I didn't like the sequel at all tbh... wasn't my cuppa. However I did quite enjoy the remake even if it does feel Holywood and lost it's gritiness!

      I suppose I was expecting THE RAGE: CARRIE 2 to be the usual poor, modern type of horror movie and I was pleasantly surprised. It's not brilliant but it's surprisingly good when you compare it to almost every other recent horror. There have been a few exceptions but none immediately spring to mind. Apparently the Shout Factory and Arrow 4K versions of Carrie look slightly different. That seems a little odd when you consider the amount of hours it must take to do the work that goes into a 4K home video release but apparently it's true.

      @ollector5920 Strangely I see a comment below saying about high bandwidth and bit rate, however... just watched this... ruclips.net/video/i-fFyDUgFK8/видео.html very interesting to see! It seems the Shout Factory is alot lighter and slightly more unatural BUT it's hard to see if this is how it looks on your own TV but from the main section from 7:30 into the video, seems I'd prefer the Arrow one based off screen shots... Mmmm I'd also say that there's more "detail" at 8:07 as well... more definition on the plant between the two people and more detail in the mothers hair? HOWEVER at 8:33, the scream factory looks far less tampered with... the Arrow one looks pretty noisy there everywhere in that scene. This is tough!

    Hello good sir!
    Ive been following your channel for months and i love your insight on 4k transfers.
    Im quite new to 4k viewing and when i bought my TCL 55 mini led tv ( which im very happy with ) a tech review of my tv ( gave it top marks ) suggested turning off motion smoothing aka soap opera effect immediately!
    When i put a 4k film into my sony 4k player i was horrified to see what motion smoothing did!
    Yes it looked slmost 3D.
    Incredible really but it also ruined the immersion of the film and i felt like i was on set beside the camera instead of viewing from afar!
    I haven't watched a soap opera in decades for good reason so i quickly turned it off!
    Id love to hear your opinion on motion smoothing sir but i imagine you would hate it 😂✌️
    Keep up the great work from one Englishman to another 👍

      Good to have you here Daz and sorry for not replying sooner but I've been away and didn't take a computer with me. Motion smoothing is just one of multiple options that come with all tellies now that should be labelled 'Mess up your image quality here'. Sharpness is another that should be minimized as low as you feel is still acceptable. I find 0 is the best on my video projector but it's harder to judge on the telly. I think I have it about 10% now but I did have it on 0 for ages. Basically, any digital 'enhancement' turns the image to mush so turn them off. They're a major cause of people getting image quality of 4K discs wrong. Sometimes the options turn themselves back on which shouldn't be a surprise as essentially these machines are computers now and they're all prone to software bugs.
      John.

      Some have suggested anime and CGI movies but to me it ruins immersion.
      I'm getting ABIT obsessed with this 4k collecting hobby!
      Have about 50 films now with more on the way!
      I watched Leon and true romance straight after last night and the transfers seemed superb. Incredible films too.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  4 месяца назад +1

      I often wonder the same thing. Most of the time it's because only the Blu-ray contains all the extra features but not always. Sometimes it's a blessing that the Blu-ray is included because I've found six 4K discs (so far) that have developed a fault. I've replaced four of them so far but it's shocking when you're watching a disc that was perfect just a few years before when new but is now staggering all over the place. As for a single disc pack being cheaper, I don't know how much each Blu-ray costs to be pressed in a lab but the more that are stamped the cheaper it is so I wouldn't be surprised if they only cost about one pound each to produce now and maybe less. They do add to the weight of the pack though which puts them in the next postal charge bracket up here in the UK.

      I do hope to Timothy. We mustn't expect too much though as this is a blow-up from a far lower quality video master file but it will be interesting to see how good these 4K video shoots can look when put onto the highest quality film format. There was a similar exercise with Star Wars Rogue One after The Force Awakens had done so well the year before but Rogue One wasn't exactly great to look at on the 85ft wide screen.
