I grew up with this movie. I get my copy on Tuesday. I don’t own a physical copy of this movie, so I’m happy that I got the steel book because I like the look of it and I enjoyed the movie.
The movie is ok, the soundtrack is great and the steelbook artwork looks legendary for a child of the 80s like iam
I feel this is a movie you need to be someone who grew up in the 80s to truly appreciate. As someone who grew up in the 80s the movie and its soundtrack are indelible. It generates an enormous amount of nostalgia. You have no idea how pervasive this soundtrack was that year. You couldn't go anywhere that year without hearing the title track or "Let's Hear It For the Boy."
I definitely get that for sure. Soundtrack is incredible.
I'm waiting for 4k Leviathan it's one of my favorite in the 80's.

But it's not.... I watched the 4k last night and it's fine. Definite improvement over the blu ray.

I heard from another reviewer that the transfer sucks. Why am I going to spend $30 for a Steelbook and DVD quality movie ⁉️ I may buy the Blu-ray someday.

@@donjaun540 Weird Science 4K I was not a fan of. The Arrow bluray is perfect. The Footloose 4K however is the best the movie has ever looked imo. It's not great, but it's more of a source material issue. I say if you want it, GET IT!
I've wanted to pick up the 4k steelbook too but I've watched 4k vs. blu-ray comparison videos and it kinda changed my mind, it looks like the blu-ray looks much better for some strange reason.
I passed on this. I have the Blu and I'm plenty content. Seemed an unnecessary 4K upgrade
The sound on the original blu-ray is 6.1 and the support on the 4K is only 5.1.
The blu ray is supposed to be one of the worst ever and dnr'd to death
I can't get past the grain scrubbing and all of the black crush on this release. It's early but I'm pretty sure Footloose will be in the running for the worst release of 2024 when all is said and done.
Then again, Footloose was never visually a good looking movie. I think some people are just blowing it out of proportion. Not every film needs oversaturated colors like on the 2011 bluray. The movie was made to look bland and dull in the first place. That's the art of cinema! I agree with the film scrubbing. While the DVD has a lot of grain on it, they should've kept the film grain in the middle so it wouldn't look too scrubbed out.
They downgraded the audio track 😔
Paramount dropped the ball not putting a Dolby Atmos track on this release!
oh dear not every 4k can be perfection - this film has always had a lot of grain and its not loaded with colour the town is prettty beige looking, Paramount can't make it better than it actually is - they'll get hounded if they DNR they'll get hounded if they don't. I haven't cancelled my order - and I'll decide what I think when it arrives i've gone for the slipcover.
I've never seen them criticised for not using DNR.
Unless you grew up in the 80 as teen, it’s very hard to understand why most of us love this film. Music was everything to us, MTV was new, walk-mans became affordable meaning you could finally own your own music and take it with you. So many movies with great soundtracks during that time. I have my pre-order but do admit the movie has been played so much I doubt I will break the seal on this one. Some of movies I collect from the 80s I really just want to see them on the shelf.
I cancelled my preorder last week after seeing how bad the picture quality is. I'll wait and get the steelbook when it's $10.
You need to watch some comparisons if you think the outdoor scenes look good because they look way better on the blu-ray.
The reviews have been so split, I'll probably just wait until it falls into the $10-15 range.
4K continues to prove to be the most subjective of home video formats. Opinions all over the place based on what aspects of it you value most.

I can’t wait to get my 4K copy on Tuesday. I actually really enjoy the movie and I can’t wait to revisit it. I was curious about checking out the original version because me and my Friend went to the Theater and saw the 2011 remake opening night and the entire packed theater was having a Great time. I’m hoping Paramount releases the remake in 4K because that would look Phenomenal on the format especially with the country style soundtrack especially the Footloose song redone by Blake Shelton. Come on Paramount don’t pull a Wayne’s World where you release Wayne’s World on 4K but not the second. Definitely check out the remake of Footloose
Footloose will always be special to me because it was filmed in the town and surrounding area I grew up in

I love Footloose. Always will. I was 10 when it came out and yes, 1984 was maybe the best year ever along with 1982. I have the steelbook preordered and i LOVE how the songs are on the back!! Ken, this movie was HUUGE if you were a kid in ‘84 man. It’s a great 80’s flick for sure. But i have it in 4k in digital and i already knew the quality isn’t amazing, but i still need it!!
I'm starting to understand the appeal. I enjoyed the movie much more this time around. May grow to love it?

I don't think Footloose is a film that you watch for visual quality, however Paramount dropped the ball not putting a Dolby Atmos track on the 4K. The music would've sounded so much better!

I saw this in the theatre on opening night, February 17th 1984. It was a full house and everyone was clapping and cheering and having a great time. I felt something special in it when I saw it and went out and bought the vinyl record and tape. I can’t believe it’s been 40 years ago.
It is a source material issue. This is the best its ever gonna look.
I grew up in the 80's, and I remember seeing this when it came out.
I have not seen the 4k, but I did see Footloose in the theater when it came out back in '84 and can confirm the film was drab back then and it's always how I remember it being.
I figured that was the case.
I love footloose, I would love to get it in 4K
Sometimes I don't understand how people say that they can remember how it looked back in theaters because it is really difficult to judge too. There are many factors that affect the theater presentation. The original intentions of the director, how can we possibly know. Then comes the transfer on BD, then on 4K the color timing is different too. "The way it was meant to be" just scratches my head, and I'm a very avid movie enthusiastic person.

Great movie much better than the remake.
FYI on the digital version you can only hear footloose commentary with the HD version odd. So it’s not just the disc they restricted the commentary to HD only even on digital
I am not buying this. I am tired of bad 4K transfers and dull colors. For what a 4K costs, my expectations are very high. I will stay with the blu ray on this.
Dude it was film like this back then how do you expect from a big studio like Paramount to release some boutiques labels should release instead Paramount would you like to see criterion put this out.

I’m about 60/40 on this review, I don’t consider lack of special features, a slip or even liking the film to be fair criticisms but preference. However I want to know how the transfer looked and yea should a 40 year old movie look pristine in 4K? Sigh work on how you title the video, it sounded like you would tear this one apart.
I don’t just focus on A/V on this channel. It’s all aspects that matter to me and many others. Also, the thumbnail represents what was talked about in the video.
Does Paramount found the original 35 mm negatives for this 4k release or they done a Young Sherlock Holmes on us again for this release.
Sounds like this 4k is like SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER 4k. Where the bluray has more color that pops.

Damn shame… I never had a physical copy of Footloose. The Steelbook design sold me. Now that I’ve heard mixed reviews about the 4K transfer, I’m not sure if I’ll regret buying this one.
I wouldn't worry too much. The 4K disc isn't Terminator 2 or Planes, Trains, & Automobiles bad! Footloose was never visually a good looking film to begin with. It was made intentionally to look that dull and bland. Even the original DVD of Footloose isn't the best looking either.

I actually didn’t mind PT&A’s 4K transfer. I’ll admit it looked a tad bit off, but I held onto my Blu-ray.
If you didn’t own a copy previously, you’re good I think. Has both Blu-ray and 4K, so you can take your pick.
I own the Footloose Soundtack CD but not the movie. Soundtrack is better than movie. Even though I never hated the movie, it was never a favorite of mine.

Hey Ken, I like the way you handled the review. unlike a lot of Blu-ray transfers most 4K transfers are the result of some sort of preservation or restoration. so I’m sure footloose 4K is more or less what the film looks like. and anyone telling you that they saw back in 84 and can remember how it looked well my ass that isn’t really possible. and if you remember when Blu-ray first hit the market, they advertised it as a brighter picture so I’m sure there was some bumping up in brightness and color. thank goodness 4K is really geared towards the look of film couldn’t be happier with the format. Have a great one as always.
Agree with the rewatch element. Frinstance (believe it or not) I enjoyed The Dark Knight Returns in the cinema but was BLOWN AWAY when I watched it on Blu-ray at home. Crazy stuff 😂

I heard the same kinda sucks comments about the movie Weird Science. I didn't buy either expensive 4k. To me Ken a four k at twice the resolution should blow away a Blu-ray. It should not be close.
Four times the resolution actually. And colors go from 8bit to 10bit which is 64 times more colors.

See, I loved the Friday the 13th 4Ks. I thought they looked great overall.
I'm with you. I'm no professional 4K reviewer so I just say what I think from what I'm seeing. I just thought a lot of Footloose needed a lot more work before they sent it out to us.

To be fair, I remember noticing that when I saw the movie in the theater back in the 80s. Shots within a scene would feel crisp and clear, then soft and almost out of focus when it switched to another angle. It wouldn't surprise me if 4K made that more pronounced.
And you also can’t help but think what it would look like in the hands of a Vinegar Syndrome or Arrow? Would they have been able to get more out of the restoration? Who knows? Regardless, I wouldn’t blame anyone for not being happy with the PQ here.
@@midlevelmedia It would depend on if the issue is the original photography. I work in QC for TV, and anytime there's an upgrade the likelihood of limitations in the original source footage being revealed becomes greater. Think of it like that Family Guy skit where he gets a 4K TV and that hot news anchor is suddenly terrifying to look at.

I definitely agree with your assessment of Blu Ray s being bright(HD) whereas 4Ks can seem darker but it’s a 4K scan of the original 35mm and closest representation of the theater experience when the movie was released in theaters.

I agree with ken, Friday the 13th 4k transfer was good. If someone doesn't have an OLED tv they're opinion isn't valid
You could take that a step further and say if someone doesn't have a calibrated TV their opinion doesn't matter.

The transfer was questionable, but what most were annoyed by was they changed the fade to white transitions. Ken sometimes doesn’t focus on what the actual complaints about a release are.
I watched this in the theater and was such an amazing theater experience that I still remember how great it was. Still a favorite movie of mine to this day the soundtrack was so big when it came out you could not escape it was great.
You’re the 2nd reviewer who didn’t hate the transfer so I am sure it will be great either way steelbook is on the way and slipcover 🎉 I watched the digital 4K already it looked fine no complaints disc should be better.

Thank you, Ken, for an honest straight forward review of this new 4K Footloose edition. Perhaps the image is what it did look like in the theater when it was first released. I did not see it at the theater either. Over time, with VHS, DVD, and then the Blu-ray transfers, we most likely would get some difference in the color levels. I'll be getting mine on Wednesday.

I’m thinking like you, each format has tinkered with things to where we really don’t know what the natural state is/was. Therefore the muted coloring may be perfectly natural compared to the blu ray. I’ll go with the 4K.
Exactly! The movie was intentionally made to look that dull. Not every movie has to have vibrant, and oversaturated colors!
Yes and I further like Ken’s comment regarding which one are going to watch. I know planes trains transfer wasn’t great but I’m going to watch it over my dvd.
All comes down to personal preference. Especially when you’re dealing with brightness and coloring.
Footloose is an alright movie, nothing grand and a BIT overrated. I'd still get this steelbook bc its so awesome looking. But that main song has aged fairly terribly. Just SO corny at this point.,
Some people are looking way too much in the video quality of this release! It's supposed to look muddy and bland. The original DVD looks like that to! Hell, there are a huge handful of movies from the 70s, and even films that came out around the same time as Footloose that look way better!

@bassage13: It's not only about knowing what you talk about but also about subjective experience. For example the Pirates of the Caribbean 4Ks are famously bad. But watching them was more fun for me than watching the Blu Rays because I liked the colors more. Sometimes reviewers can scream into your ears all day how bad a mastering is (and they are right). But that doesn't mean you are forbidden from buying the product and having a good time with it.
@@bened22 The POTC Blu Ray is infinitely better than the 4k . Not only picture, but sound as well. That disc is a nightmare. The top example of a disasterous 4k mess. If you think it's fine, this hobby isn't for you. Your brain doesn't work. If you give money to bad products, we get more bad products. People like you have no standards and you ruin it for everyone.

True. I recently dared challenge a technical comment he made about the VS release of Daryl (in a positive way) and he went psycho, shaking his head, words in shouting capital letters. A full on hissy fit, temper tantrum in the comments section. Completely uncalled for from a subscriber and for me it gives the measure of his character.
It's also why he will probably never be in uted to collaborate with other RUclipsrs as he is so self opinionated.
For the record he was actually in a urate with what he said in the video and what he didn't know is that I had actually been in touch with VS via email and had an exchange of emails to corroborate my comments.
The constant pleas for money, following his links and self congratulations and praise for his work are both tiresome and crass. I didn't mind this as I find his content genuinely useful, but I've lost all respect after the way he responded. My 8 year old daughter is eternally more mature.
His whole video, he just shat on the 4K, and acted overly super righteous about it! Footloose is not supposed to look pretty! It's supposed to look depressing!

What’s the grain like Ken
I was happy with it during the scenes that stood out for me. Very fine, but noticeable and adds to the filmic quality. There are some reporting DNR. I didn’t notice any of that. Everything looked completely natural.
