    Hello from Canada. I’ve been watching your videos for about a year now. I’m 49 years old and have been a movie fanatic since I watched Star Wars in 1978. What I like about you is the knowledge you bring to these videos. It’s informative and interesting. What I also like is your voice and the way you don’t rush things. It’s not the typical quickly edited flashy video. Rather considered and intelligent. Keep up the good work.

      And to think I was considering wearing a baseball hat the wrong way round, using the words 'guys' and 'cool' as often as possible and then even something totally ridiculous like putting the word 'super' in front of everything possible to try to make things really interesting... or rather 'super interesting'.
      Seriously though, thank you for the appreciation. Right from the start I wanted to make serious film videos that would appeal to true film enthusiasts because I couldn't find anyone doing this sort of thing that had spent a lifetime with film.
      Star Wars was a big influence on me too John but Jaws a couple of years before that might have fuelled my interest in film. I had been interested from about the age of 3 though.
      John.

      I was working as a projectionist when this film was originally released in the UK. I remember that one of the reels contained a printed note produced by the studio on behalf of Lynch. It gave express instructions regarding the film ratio but also interestingly the sound level. He stated it was not to be played any lower than 6 in Dolby Digital and if possible higher. I print checked it with this instruction and it was an incredible audiovisual experience. Unfortunately I had to knock it down to 4.5 as my boss deemed it too loud for the everyday multiplex goer...

It's nice to see someone who has a true passion for cinema and produces reviews that don't feel hyped up to the point where the film in question isn't the focus of the video anymore. Good to have you here Alvorax. I haven't seen every 4K release that's been released and I also haven't purchased some of the really good titles because I already have prints of them on film in one gauge or another and I don't feel like watching them on video when I have them on film, even if the 4K would be better overall than a Super 8 print (not so much the case with 35mm of course). I have done two separate top ten 4K videos because the first one didn't include anything that was shot on video simply because video is not up to the best standards that film can offer. So I did a second top ten which was restricted to movies shot on video. Some of those are very good with a few better than most 35mm releases. If you haven't seen either of those uploads then they may be what you're looking for. If not, let me know.

    I got the special edition earlier this year and it is totally worth the money, the packaging looks nice (the overall artwork looks great) and it includes a book giving some hints about what parts of the movie could mean. As many others already have mentioned, it also explains that Lynch does not want chapters. You're right with that the Criterion and Studiocanal discs are the same.
    I totally agree with the sound of the night club scene, that part sounds incredible. After watching it three times I still get goosebumps, it's so emotional and clear.

    I saw this in the cinema on the initial release and loved every second. You can sense all these subplots start in the movie that never get really explored further and would have been given space in a series. In a way though "Twin Peaks: The Return" series is a partial sequel, and one can see "Mulholland" and "Twin Peaks" as part of the same cinematic universe. Also, I have to recommend for anyone who likes surreal L.A. noir, "Under the Silver Lake." I know it gets mixed reactions, but I really love it.

      Greetings from sunny England Clark. I actually had a second look at your review before I did mine and it was really good as usual. I'm pretty sure the soft, grainy look is deliberate and 'domcoke' (a subscriber on here) has confirmed that the editing was done on computer but all recorded and numbered and then the original negative was cut to match which sure means the overall look had to be a deliberate choice. As for the lesbian sex scene, bloody hell that was a bit close to the mark even for 2001. I know it's got a lot worse in films since then but as much as I like to see a beautiful girl or two, this one was a bit difficult to look at. I suppose I find it a bit embarrassing.

    The acting really stood out in this one. Many ‘natural’ performances. The start of the scene with the hitman in the office was as if there was no camera, just two mates chatting. But all of them nailed it. Lynch was so blessed to have this talent at his disposal. & what he did with them was amazing for me. First screening left me stunned & launched me down the Mulholland Drive rabbit hole which helped fill me in with whatever it was I’d witnessed 😂

Mulholland Drive is a difficult narrative to decipher but all the clues are in there if you look for them. Probably not with just one viewing though but that's half the appeal of this one and why I think you'll be better off with the 4K disc. Ah, one of my absolute favorites. And one of Lynch's best. Glad to see your take on it. I have the Criterion Blu-ray and have been looking to upgrade it. It used to infuriate me when people would insist that it makes no sense. Ive always found that it's, oddly enough, one of Lynch's more straightforward films once you've unlocked the narrative puzzle (a certain throwaway scene at the beginning basically slaps you in the face with it once you know). But such a haunting movie all the same. The scene at Club Silencio is absolutely devastating. And both Watts and Herring are mesmerizing in equal measure. Man...time to watch this again. It's been awhile.
    BTW, the lack of chapters was a Lynch mandate in that he wanted people to watch the movie in its entirety and not skip around. I think the real reason is that he wanted to make it harder to find..um..certain scenes. The original DVD was like that, too.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 года назад

      A few people have enlightened me with regards to David Lynch's opinion of chapter stops Tom. I don't agree with him but I can understand his intentions.
      Now then, the Blu-ray in this Studio Canal pack is not a patch on the 4K but it may not be quite such a marked difference on your system as they're all different. Going from the 4K to the Blu-ray made the Blu-ray appear absolutely awful which it certainly isn't but that's the difference that HDR can bring. HDR/Dolby Vision makes a video look more like film and this one was like watching a 35mm print and I don't think anyone could ever ask for more from a home video. In other words, you've got to watch the 4K next time you watch Mulholland Drive.

    Good overview, John, and I love this film. I seem to remember years ago when DVD materialised that David Lynch didn't want his films chaptered to try to avoid people not watching them from start to finish, so this suggests that again with this new disc that the lack of chapters you mention is a deliberate choice, especially as you say because he was involved with the restoration.

    One of my all time favorite films, which I had the pleasure of seeing in a huge theater with a sold out crowd. What an experience! It was a surprise since I had disliked more David Lynch than I had liked (I was a huge Twin Peaks fan, up to when the Laura Palmer murder was solved. HATED everything after that! Hated Fire Walk With Me). His weird story-telling left me bored with Wild At Heart and especially Lost Highway, but Mulholland somehow clicked for me, from start to finish.
    The lack of chapter stops: David Lynch refused to allow them for this film on DVD and Blu-Ray. There are some old articles out there about this.
    Note: The infamous full frontal nudity featuring Laura Elena Harring has been censored for all home video formats (though I am curious if it's finally revealed in 4K). Lynch promised the actress he would make sure the bottom nudity was not visible for screen shot junkies who'd spread it all over the internet. Because DVD releases were overly brightened (480i lacked the resolution to hold onto detail in darker scenes) the blurring used to hide the bottom nudity was obvious in the shot and highly distracting. For the Blu-Ray the shot was darkened so it was no so jarring. Those who did not know would assume the shot was lit that way. I have to say that in the theater the full frontal nudity added some real energy in the theater, which was Lynch's intention.
    Thanks for the review. I had not been paying attention to new releases and completely missed that this was available! I am ordering right now.

      Good to hear from you again. I didn't really take too much notice of the whole sex scene but I don't think there's a full frontal on display so you'll have to let me know when you get your copy and sit down to watch it. As for the 4K transfer, I felt just like I was watching a 35mm print in a decent cinema, which isn't often possible these days with sub-standard video projection proliferating. Can't blame the cinemas for that though because most can't afford to keep shelling out on the latest equipment.

      @@moviecollector5920 On first viewing, that scene (which has definitely been darkened for newer uncensored releases) really feels out of left field and a little gratuitous. But on second viewing, it makes a lot more sense given what you learn about these characters in the final act. My second viewing was my wife's first viewing and I remember her going "What!? These two just met and now all of the sudden they're in love?!" And I told her she needed to wait, that it would make sense later on. As such, I kind of wish Lynch hadn't darkened this scene. And not for the obvious reasons. Taken within the context of the entire narrative, it feels like it was designed to take you by surprise and make you feel uncomfortable. Laura Elena Harring's sudden complete nudity really plays into that and I think the darkening lessens the impact just a bit. For me, it's one of those scenes that clues you in that something is really amiss here (illustrated perfectly by my wife's reaction). At the same time, I really admire Lynch's commitment to protecting Harring here, even at the expense of the impact of the scene. His attitude towards actors is a refreshing break from other directors of his ilk who have reputations for being abusive and exploitative (I'm looking at you, Kubrick).

The dream like feel of it might not work without really getting involved so perhaps a second viewing will do it. I'm not sure the sex scene needed to be so graphic but I'm sure others will disagree with me. The biggest issue with putting a glow on an image is that its really hard to encode, and trying to resolve film grain on this transfer wasn't perfect at these low bit-rates.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 года назад +1

      I think you'll find the glow was on the negative. I don't ever take any notice of nits and bits and things that others focus on as the only important factor is how something appears to the human eye. This certainly isn't the best video quality you're ever going to see but in our home cinema at almost nine feet wide it was just like watching a 35mm print. And none of us could ever wish for more than that. Scanning a film does exacerbate film grain though so a general release print may well look better if I ever get the chance to screen one in here.

I'm not pulling up the bit-rate literally, but I can see that bit-rate does not resolve properly on this 4K, and it's generally because Criterions bit-rates are too low. The grain looks slightly blocky and inconsistent.

      @@hdmoviesource I should have gone back to check if the film grain had a slightly different structure for the final act but I think I would have noticed. But it is possible that different film stocks were used for different sections of Mulholland Drive. There weren't any noticeable artifacts caused by computer tweaking on my video projector so perhaps check that something daft hasn't inadvertently come on on your system such as 'sharpen' because that can mess things up just like all the so-called digital 'enhancements'. It was just like watching a 35mm print here so it's a shame if you're not getting the same experience from your copy. Certainly not the best 4K by any stretch but I think the soft focus, coarse grain structure was a deliberate choice when the film was made. The overall look does suit this film.

      I suppose it's not considered a popular enough title Daniel. A lot of films never get a Blu-ray release in different markets. Each film has to go through licencing and certification in each market and it all costs, particularly if different edits of said titles are required. The manhours that go into mastering and authoring a Blu-ray can be astronomical at times, but perhaps not so much if it's already a video in the first place rather than a film that needs to be transferred. I expect The French Dispatch will appear somewhere in Europe or elsewhere in the worlds without a zone/region code applied to it and you'll be able to snap it up.

  • @domcoke

    Your assumption that the film was "put out to 35mm negative" from the computer is I think slightly flawed. Firstly, no films were edited on the "original negative" - editors used a cutting copy - or print from the negative... and edited that on a Steenbeck, or moviola. And once film is locked, the negative is cut/spliced using the edited cutting copy as the guide. In the early days of non-linear editing, negative cuts were still done, but rather than using a cut/spliced print, the edge numbers from the negative were burnt into the telecined picture, and much like a cutting copy from a Steenbeck, this was then used as the basis for the cut negative. So I suspect this is what was done in this case. And that a cut negative existed for Mulholland Drive, that was used to strike cinema prints in the first place.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 года назад

      Thanks Domcoke. I did wonder if someone was tasked with going through some sort of rigmarole like that. If it was done it confirms the coarse grain was a deliberate choice. Interesting.
      John.

    • @domcoke
      @domcoke 2 года назад

      @@moviecollector5920 yep. Pre Digital Intermediates, that's how all films were created. "Neg cutters" were a specialist role - tasked with taking the finished work print, which had temporary splices in, and then cementing the negative together using that print as the guide to where the cuts went. So in the early days of non-linear computer editing, this was still done. But rather than reading the negative's "edge numbers" [which were printed along the edge of the neg, and in turn visible on the print]. The telecine read these edge numbers automatically, and they were converted into a burnt-in timecode on screen. And so rather than sending the cut print to the neg cutter, a tape version was played out, and that's what was used as a guide. It's the reason why many older films can have new masters relatively easily by scanning the cut negative - even in the early days of computer editing - 96 to around 2003 - which is when DIs started to gain popularity. That's when the hinterland of negs scanned at 2k started. [apologies if you already knew most of this ;) ]

      @@domcoke I don't think I knew any of that domcoke so it's all wonderful new information to me. I had wondered how the original negatives survived the editing process unscathed. I had thought about a duplicate negative being used but I didn't consider a timecode on the negative to facilitate that approach and without that it seemed like an almost impossible task. Well, one hell of a rigmarole at the least.

    I used to love this movie, and had long discussions about all its elements, scenes. But lately this kind of stuff rather irritates me. Directors making senseless incoherent crap, and then pretending they meant it that way. Or when the whole movie turns out to be a dream - such an annoying, cheap trick, makes you feel you've wasted your time.
    So my opinion of this particular movie changed also. They were just saving a failed pilot however they could, by tacking on some scenes at the end. Then sat quietly in the corner with a meaningful expression, looking at people argue and try and make sense of it.

      I know what you mean Lenny as there certainly are a few characters in this film who are introduced and were clearly intended to be part of a bigger whole but that never came to fruition. That does mix things up a little more than required but If you go back and watch the film again it is all there from the start that it's in Betty's mind until the final act. During the opening the camera falls into the bed or the duvet or pillow or whatever it is, the chap with the mental trouble in the diner talking to his psychiatrist/psychologist uses the word 'dream'. The monstrous human at the back of the diner appears to have the unexplained empty blue box in one scene and then after discovering the blue box in her handbag at the Silencio club the two gals return home and Betty disappears, the inference being that the blue box represents a passage from dream world to reality. Was she dead all the time and this is her soul creating a fake memory of how she'd have liked things to have been? It is a strange film but I like films that make me think these days. Twenty years ago I guarantee that I wouldn't have liked it.

      That's what I meant by being later irritated by the whole 'it was all a dream' construct in other films, I didn't want to write spoilers here. But since you did, yeah, basically she's falling dead into a pillow, and the whole movie is the last seconds of her brain activity.
