  • The 2023 Indiana Jones movie directed by James Mangold who previously brought us the fabulous 'Le Mans '66' (aka 'Ford v Ferrari' in other markets). This fifth film in the series has apparently harvested almost universally bad reviews but as usual I didn't watch, listen or read any of those so that there was no chance of undue influence. The result being that I thoroughly enjoyed this new, older Indiana Jones adventure. Wonderful to see so many of the original cast return, to listen to the ever expanding John Williams score and to hear all the exagerrated sound effects from the first film that have travelled down through all the sequels. Brilliant fun and surely this will be a big hit as a Christmas present in a few weeks time (as I type this).
Image aspect ratio approximately 2.40:1 with Dolby Atmos sound. The pack also contains a Blu-ray disc with an HD copy of the film (exceptional quality) but this has DTS-HD 7.1 sound despite the box incorrectly stating Dolby Atmos.
Also included in this video is a first look at the Acorn Media International Blu-ray release of series 4 of CREEPSHOW. I love this series but at the time of recording this review video had only had enough time to watch the first episode. An update will be included in a forthcoming Movie Collector video but right now it looks like another fun time being scared with top-notch 1.78:1 HD quality and great DTS sound.

    Another good review, John.
I skipped Dial of Destiny at the theater because the reviews were so lukewarm, but gave it a go on Disney+ last week.
I just couldn't get into it. As fun as it was to see younger Indy at the beginning, the look of the film just seemed off. Too many filters or something.
Phoebe Waller Bridge's character came across as unlikeable to me, and after a while, I just lost interest in the movie itself.
I don't mind "old" Indy, but old, sad, depressed Indy living in a New York City tenement just bummed me out.
I really wish the adventure torch had been passed to Ke Huy Quan, with a more game Indy along for the ride, crackin' his whip and takin' names.

It is odd that so many genuinely didn't like it. It's possible part of the problem is the poor quality video projection in most cinemas and then to shrink it down onto a television might be asking for too much trouble. I did check it this morning on my telly and it lost the reality we had when projecting it so I think I'm beginning to see what much of the trouble is. Shame it wasn't shot and finished on film then there would have been better control over how it looked just about everywhere. John.

I haven't been excited about a new Spielberg movie since Crystal Skull. And we all know how that played out.

@@billg3356 Or perhaps it's time to call it a day now that Harrison is no longer a young man Bill. I think the makers of this did wonderfully well to bring the whole saga to a satisfactory conclusion. Other opinions are available but I watched it without any preconceptions and having read nor seen anything about it other than a few thumbnails on RUclips which I can only describe as click bait at best. Slagging things off and pouring hate on a product or company does seem to entice people to watch. John.

I really enjoyed INDIANA JONES & THE DIAL OF DESTINY when I saw it at the cinema. Like you, I am a big Indy fan. There is one scene in the film that made my day. It was at the end of the WW2 train sequence. Unusually for an American film it was the UK Union Flag and British soldiers that could be viewed attacking the train and saving the day. Just a short shot, but the inclusion of that flag made me smile.

Watched this yesterday for the 2nd time yesterday and enjoyed it again. I think it’s an entertaining movie and deserves better ratings. I like the fact that age/time are central to the story, gives it some weight that should resonate with most lifelong Indy fans.
This was my first 4k viewing on a new TV and disc player. I found the images rather dark overall. That could be down to my screen settings and that I watched it in a bright room.
Thank you for another quality review. I appreciate your lightness and humor that we should all have a bit of while reviewing such a thing as a blockbuster Hollywood movie.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed it Echanos but I probably shouldn't have been because so many people on here have told me that there was a hate campaign against it across social media even before the film was released. People are easily influenced and too many seem to love to hate these days. I could watch Dial of Destiny again right now because I was so taken with it but so many other discs are still on the shelves awaiting a watch so this one will have to wait a while longer for a repeat screening.

Hey John, first off I wish you and the seamstress and your entire family good things for the holidays. It's been a fun ride watching all your videos this year. Love the way you've branched out into IMAX and more. Completely in awe how you've kept all your tickets! We moderately enjoyed this film and all thought it was the fourth best in the series of 5. Like you the deaging process was occasionally jarring and running on the train was straight out of a video game. On THX, yes the 80hz crossover is great. However, modern height channels when used well, add another dimension to the experience. I'm running 8 surrounds and no regrets. The hat is priceless :)

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  7 месяцев назад

I'm glad someone spotted the hat Rob. That was the Seamstress's idea when I was about to get the camera set up and I thought it might be a bit of a laugh. Difficult to play it with a straight face though.
I like four of the Indiana Jones films and even though I don't like the tone of the second film there are some very good sequences in it. As for THX, I think I'd need a bigger room to add anything else. The system we've had for the past 20 years was at its best in the Victoria Hall within the Ealing Town Hall complex. That hall is cavernous but the bass shook the floor. In here it's too big for the room so I can't run it at anywhere near that volume and certainly can't have the bass up anywhere near as loud. But it's wonderful regardless of that and it enhances every film and video we watch. I'm soon to attempt the hook up of the 5.1 digital sound from the latest 35mm projector so that will no doubt turn into a massive project because nothing is ever easy.

I too was impressed with how the Digital Cinematography replicated not just film, but the look of late 80's, early 90's film. I was reading that recent film The Holdovers opted to shoot Digitally over film as they wanted to create a 1970 shot film look but couldn't find cameras or film stock that could do that. Simply shooting on 35mm would make it look like a newer film. If Digital can gain that through perhaps using AI to study earlier films and formulating it within the computer then that might be a way to keep classic aesthetics a choice for filmmakers.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  2 месяца назад +1

There do seem to have been good advancements in video capabilities in the past few years David. To get American Graffiti looking like a standard 35mm print rather than a cheapo TechniScope is the best example I've seen. But James Cameron appears to have done similar things with the recent 4K disc releases of his films because I cannot recall Aliens ever looking like a high quality production. I saw the 70mm blow-up at the Odeon three times and although I don't recall it being particularly impressive when I later saw a 35mm general release print I could immediately tell that the 70mm was superior to that. Quite a bit superior in fact. I have two copies of Aliens on Super 8 and although they're good quality prints they didn't exactly have the best original master so even when I first purchased a print well over 30 years ago it was always a little disappointing. But to see images of it looking the way it does for the new 4K disc I think the general purchaser is going to be impressed and love the way it looks. I'm too used to seeing it looking like a bit of a grainy film so I'll never be able to get used to the new look. I do think all the re-processing was the right thing to do though because most would purchase a 4K thinking every 4K should look like TENET. That's understandable because to the masses a film to video transfer means the same thing for every film. They don't realize there are a myriad of film gauges and formats with some being much, much better than others.

I’m not sure when it started or why it started but it seems that anything having to do with Disney is automatically frowned at or disliked no matter how good it was. I’m 57 yrs old and I grew up with Disney movies and TV shows. It doesnt matter the movie studio, they have all made movies with some sort of underlying tone whether it was political, religious etc etc etc. everything seems to have a message in it and its been going on forever. Woke is just a term being used by today’s generation for their displeasure within the content of a movie. And as far as strong Female characters roles these have been a part of movies since Hollywoods inception. Ok, ive said what I wanted… Another great review about what I think was a very good movie and I’m glad to have been able to see it. Long live Indiana Jones.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  7 месяцев назад +1

Some valid points there Scott so thank you for pointing them out. I didn't see any of this wokery that so many cited as the reason they absolutely detested this film. Phoebe Waller Bridge's character wasn't the most likable but I warmed to her as the film went on and in the end I thought she was good with the knockout punch at the end being hilarious. Others haven't seen it that was but apparently the hate campaign got started before the film was even released and too many are too easily led. I think that is more true today than it's ever been. Maybe a few on here will have learned from the discussions and in future will try to make their own mind up about things. Others genuinely didn't enjoy the film and have been able to state why coherently and that's fine. After all, we don't all like the same things all of the time so why should a film be any different. Getting hot under the collar about someone liking a film when others don't is a little immature but I'm sure we've all been there when we were young.

Most on here have been positive about this new Indiana Jones Tony but it has received more hate too - not much fortunately. It did look like a 35mm print as we used to enjoy them so I'm not surprised a genuine IMAX could get away with it on a huge screen. If only all movies shot on video looked this good but there has been a general improvement more recently so I live in hope. Of course OPPENHEIMER came along and sort of made the point about how superior film still is and will be for quite some time to come so I wonder if film makers are going to start putting their foot down with a firm hand to insist on using film. Finding the technicians still working who have the necessary skills could be the obstacle there though.

I love them to bits, and I found Dial of Destiny to be a great watch! But too long, but I thought it treated the Indy character with great respect. It wasn’t overtly reverent and carried by nostalgia, it felt like a genuinely new Indiana Jones tale, with a great and bittersweet meditation on being afraid to move on. So yeah, I’m a fan! I had fun with this review, John. I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat throughout, due to your enthusiasm, but then that hat... yep, laugh out loud time!
My copy is on it's way, and, like you, I've avoided the reviews and social media armchair experts, so as to not be thinking of those when I screen it so I can enjoy it for what it is. I didn't see this in the cinema as I didn't have the time due to reasons I won't go into here.
I also smiled when you showed that Marketing Films 400 ft version. I have a copy too in my Super 8 collection. On a side note, I also have the 400ft digest of King King (1976), also from Marketing Films - which seems to be another sort after release. Of course, then I was deflated when you showed your full length scope prints of Raiders and Last Crusade. Didn't even know they were available commercially. Which company released them?
All the best, and thanks again for your reviews.

Morning Stephen. I think Temple of Doom was issued full length, 'Scope too but I don't much care for that film so didn't invest in a copy. They were done over in Germany but I think you can still get copies through Classic Home Cinema. What state the 16mm negatives would be in now I don't know but the cost is probably going to be out of reach for most of us anyway. Last Crusade is the better quality but there is a bit of master damage here and there. I've wanted to re-run them for years now but I never get time. I did run The Abyss last weekend which was the first time in a long time watching a Super 8 feature other than checking the feature of Speed for the convention extract. There's nothing quite like watching a great feature film on Super 8.
I hope you enjoy the new Indiana Jones film. Not everyone does but in the main they're youngsters who weren't there in 1981 or even 1989. Don't expect Raiders but more an older Indy who is having one last adventure with some help from plenty of others. Harrison Ford is still able to pull off a lot of amazing feats in it though. The ending is lovely and also bear in mind that Phoebo Waller Bridge's character can be a little dislikeable for about an hour and then you should start to warm to her. By the end I was laughing along with the interactions between her and Harrison.

@@moviecollector5920 morning John… is the print of The Abyss that you projected recently also scope and in stereo? Theatrical version or the longer special edition? Btw, what lens do you use to ‘un-squeeze’ super 8 scope prints? I have a Iscomorpht and stand (a iscorama set). I actually ‘won’ it in a NFCC auction many years ago when I was just a fledgling young collector. I am very glad you reviewed DIAL OF DESTINY. I had very high expectations for this when I went to see it on opening week in the summer. I had an absolutely blast. The film was just wonderful fun and filled with great character and great action sequences. I was very disappointed when I noticed that it was getting negative reactions online. The problem with social media is that when a film starts to gain a negative 'aura', people start to jump on that bandwagon and within mere days it's almost impossible to have a fair and balanced discussion about the film. For that reason, I have avoided reviews and online discussions about DIAL OF DESTINY. I was glad to see you were reviewing it because I like the fact that you take every film on it's own merits and you never jump on whatever current bandwagon is sweeping social media with regards to new films! I absolutely agree with you about this film...it's fantastic fun. I am planning to watch the 4K during Christmas and I'm looking forward to enjoying it all over again.

Indiana Jones, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound, gets punched in the face by his goddaughter. This single punch, by a thin woman, completely knocks him out until he wakes up thousands of years and miles away. He ends up back home in New York where he's being investigated for murder. The movie makes no sense, while disrespecting and mocking a beloved cultural icon, that's why people dislike it.

@@JoJoJoker That sort of nonsense is in the Indiana Jones tradition JoJo. The evidence is in and the reason this film suffered was a hate campaign which commenced on social media prior to release owing to Disney now owning it and the expected ram-it-down-their-throats wokery considered to be inevitable. The damage was done and many couldn't look past the hate and criticism it received. By contrast you have a valid reason for disliking the film and that is the ending which I thought was hilarious. I expected he'd be left to snuff it while spending his final hours living through the particular world history event he'd studied the most but they topped that with Karen Allen. For me it was the perfect conclusion but many responses have confirmed that you had to have been there in 1981 to fully appreciate that one. Most weren't of course but some of us were. This latest sequel isn't Raiders but no other film has ever matched that since. The Last Crusade in the Indiana Jones series coming closest. Some of the comments have made me re-think about Raiders and it's a load of nonsense but we all seem to accept it and love it for what it is - a fun adventure. This latest sequel is enjoyable for the same reasons for me and most so far are in agreement on here. John.

I agree, John. It was a fun ride to watch. Because they actively made Indy's/Harrison Ford's age a part of the plot, the action seemed more believable (of course, I mean believable in the reality of Indiana Jones!) Dial of Destiny came much closer to how I felt watching the original three as a child than Crystal Skull did. I probably watched Temple of the Doom the most growing up because we recorded it on VHS when it was shown on TV for the first time one Christmas, but I loved Raiders as well. It was so exciting to then see Last Crusade in the cinema when I was 10! I'm grateful that we now have another Indy film after so long. I'm also grateful to see your Indy hat! Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦! Santa’s homeland.
I had to watch this movie twice, a day apart, to appreciate what was done. The CGI was too distracting in my first go around. The story was the same old, great hyperbole we all keep coming back for. I just find myself resisting the CGI in new movies. Maybe I’m spoiled from Jurassic Park, etc.
I found myself wanting more bass/subwoofer during the movie, but I had to keep reminding myself that ALL of the previous movies didn’t have much subwoofer in them. Modern day problems…

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It was hard to completely avoid the hate campaign as some of the RUclips thumbnails (more often known as 'click bait') clearly let it be known the video within was going to be a hatchet job. But despite that, how refreshing to see such a good fun movie despite all the negativity. Perhaps because of all that I'd lowered my expectations which can often help but I feel I cold watch this one again right now and have a great time with it. It's not exactly a brilliant film but it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be a load of fun as we tag along with an elderly Indiana Jones on one last adventure. Some of the computer effects are less than perfect but some are pretty much perfect. I had similar problems with Jurassic Park CGI so I'm prepared to forgive the odd cock up.

She improved so much as the film went on that I liked her as things progressed. I find most modern cinemas are not exactly offering image quality anywhere near like we used to enjoy and it doesn't exactly help the films we watch. I don't know what the faux IMAX in Milton Keynes is projecting but some of them are just 2K so less than 16mm can offer. If it's one of the 4K projectors or perhaps the dual 4K projectors then it should look pretty good and that should have helped.

Good movie I wish Ke Huy Quan was back as adult Short Round. The actor just won an Oscar. He could have maybe replaced Antonio Bandera's character and continued the adventure with the main characters. He could have also been the one to fly the plane. Maybe Short Round wanted to learn to fly after the Temple of Doom plane scene.

That would have been good but maybe have him in there in addition to Antonio Banderas. I think Ke Huy Quan won for Everything Everywhere which hasn't proved to be a very popular film and may have been promoted as a result of the Hollywood box ticking exercise which, if that really exists, will exclude most films from the running. If that box ticking nonsense is true then it seems like suicide to me but the Oscars have run their course now given events in recent years (awarding best picture to the wrong film and then Will Smith's awful behaviour last year). I didn't like Temple of Doom but having an adult Short Round back would still have been nice to see. Good idea Ankka.

If I take a look at a disc for a review and I really don't like it then I don't review it. If I don't like a disc but can find positive aspects to talk about then I'll do it but I'm not into pouring hate onto anything. It's a shame the world has gone down this hate route but there doesn't seem to be anything that can be done about it. It's like a runaway train. As for the Creepshow series, there are two stories within each episode and each has credits on the start so mid-way through a 50 minute (or whatever it is) long episode you'll get the opening credits for the next story. There are usually just after the creep has appeared and he's best when a man in a suit or an animatronic but more often than not he's just in the comic book strips as a static drawing. In this fourth series it looks like every episode and every story is introduced by him in comic strip form which is disappointing. But the stories are just as much fun as ever. We've watched two episodes so far and the second has a particular gruesome type of vampire-cum-werewolf tale in it. My wife had to turn away for quite a while during one particular sequence. Throughout the first three series there are quite a few classic stories and I can see us re-visiting these discs many times in the future. Better than the two original films as far as I'm concerned.

I think I'm getting a fairly good idea of why this film did get so much hate Dave and it seems to be a variety of reasons. A generation aspect partially but someone set people thinking this one was full of wokery and possibly having the Disney name on the credits exacerbated that belief. I and many others didn't pick up on it at all but Phoebe whatshername's character does give Indy a hard time for much of it. Morning Andy. It's not exactly the greatest film ever made but we had terrific fun with it. I've been asking quite a few people who have left comments telling me they don't like the film why they don't like it. One person walked out of the cinema about an hour into the film which seems rather strange but does indicate that something was rubbing some people up the wrong way. I didn't like Phoebe Waller Bridge's character much to start with but I found she grew on me as the film progressed so it's quite likely that. Another comment suggested there had been a hate campaign even before the film opened citing wokery as a big problem but I didn't twig any of that nonsense. It does seem that the Disney name was responsible for this misconception but because people are so easily led by what they read on the internet it was accepted as true without question.
It's been an interesting and informative process getting to the bottom of this conundrum. There is also a generatational aspect to it whereby in general younger viewers who weren't there in 1981, or even 1989 for Last Crusade, seem unable to understand why this film is not quite the same in tone as the earlier films. It's easier for us oldies to comprehend that a 79 year old wouldn't be hanging off the back of lorries being dragged along in the dirt but Harrison Ford still does an exceptional job in this. The chase sequences and so much else were straight out of the Indiana Jones copy book. There were a few things that I didn't much like but after about an hour I found I was very much enjoying the ride. Just as well I didn't walk out!
It was Susie's idea to put that hat on. Doing it with a straight face wasn't easy.
      John.

It’s not a terrible film, but it doesn’t do what we expect an Indiana Jones film to do. As someone who grew up watching these movies it broke my heart when my daughter said she found it ‘boring’ - that’s one thing an Indy film should never be. Some people say this one was made for grown ups, but if that’s true it missed the mark a bit there too. Raiders is one of my favourite films ever. It is magic! The cast, the music the story. As with Last Crusade legendary films.. Crystal Skull back in 2008 was below par, Shia was awful in that and Harrison was just at the end of his sell by date. He looks far too old in D.o.D. Not seen the film yet but I won't be buying anytime soon. As for 1080p bluray new releases look exceptional, very close image wise to their 4k counterparts. HDR is the biggest difference not so much image sharpness. Oblivion 1080p is sharper than the 4k which had me scratching my head? Odd. Cheers John.

The Blu-ray of Oblivion is lovely. I am intrigued to take a look at the 4K though just to see if I can work out what is different. Sometimes the more muted look is due to a cine to video transfer being done more accurately but I don't know if Oblivion was actually shot on film without looking it up. It would be an interesting exercise to go through it all and work it out.
As for the new Indiana Jones film, look at it as one last adventure with the help of some of Indy's friends. There is some magic in it but don't expect Raiders of the Lost Ark. The ending is lovely and I did hint at why that is as it involved one of my all-time favourite actresses. She still has the same beautiful smile she always did and that's basically all the ending is. A happy ending and I'm happy that they ended up together. I think many of us disliked Phoebe Waller Bridge's character but I found that after a while I started to enjoy her and her interaction with Harrison Ford. She ends up being vital to the ending so stick with it and best of luck. Don't take any notice of the hate campaign against it, lower your expectations and enjoy one last Indiana Jones adventure.

I'm a big Indiana Jones fan. As the premiere in July was approaching, I've been hearing more and more negative reviews, calling it already a 'disaster' 'destruction/betrayal of Lucas' legacy' etc. I went to the cinema full of 'bad feelings about it'... but I loved the movie instead! While I needed some time to see more good qualities of Indy4, Indy 5 felt great immediately.
I got the DVD as soon as possible - I must say I was a bit disappointed with the menu - DVDs of Indy1-4 had amazing animations and shots from the movies flying through the screen, here we only have options, the poster with the main theme in the back. Is it also the case with blu-ray?
    Great video! - subbing!

I can't remember the menu now Wojtek but it may be that it's a static display on the 4K and Blu-ray discs. Some people get rather annoyed if a disc dares to show anything from the film as it can be considered a 'spoiler'. It's possible that Disney are being cautious now given the hate campaigns against them because people believe the company has gone down the wokery route.
If you read through the comments on here you will find that there are plenty of negative opinions about this film but you will see many more positive comments with a lot of those feeling the same way that you and I do about it. I suspect I will regard it even more highly when I give it another spin and it's also possible that it will grow in stature as the years go on. Disney are out of favour and there was a social media hate campaign against this film before it was released. People are easily led and some tend to like to get on a band wagon while others will have genuinely not liked the film but that's the same with every film that's ever been made.

It's brilliant that Dial of Destiny is selling well on disc though. An indication that cinema has lost the more mature audience demographic perhaps.

@@moviecollector5920 I must say that Luke being a recluse reluctant was my least complaint about this movie - it brought to mind Yoda from 'Empire', although the fact he was so down was indeed too far - even Mark Hamill said in an interview he brought it up with the director, that Luke would've never end up like this. But apparently they did the same with Nick Fury in 'Secret Invasion' - haven't seen any of it, but that's what I've been hearing. Glooming a guy down is a new favourite formula, it seems.
I think that costs of movie tickets (and perhaps some post2020 fears as well), the bad press surrounding 'Dial', bad reviews (e.g. from Cannes festival), weaker promotional campaign (premiere of Indy 4 was such an anticipated event, the publicity alone made it a hit) - all of it made people sit this one out, and wait for the physical copies (which has been my policy for years, btw :D )

Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character got on my nerves a little to start with but I warmed to her as the film went on. The sucker punch at the end was a classic and in the best Indiana Jones tradition. I didn't get any pixellation from my home video projector (single DLP) but a lot of these video projectors in cinemas are out of date and knackered and there isn't the money coming in to be able to replace them. Using the IMAX name isn't doing that great name any favours and it should be changed to indicate the lower forms of IMAX. IMAX LITE would be a good start in that respect.

Watching now. Half an hour through it. CGI rarely looks entirely convincing and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is no different. Film making is nearly always a battle and computer animation often has to be compromised in order to meet a release date and thereby get the movie into cinemas on the booked date. If not, then the studio can get sued. With so much CGI being done for this one I found I was able to understand some of the poorer shots such as the jog across the roof of the train carriages. That parade scene with the disjointed head as Harrison Ford turns around is not the skipping frames my wife and I noticed. I can't recall exactly where it was but it was skipping frames during a fast moving sequence. We went back over it and then checked it was the same on the Blu-ray - and it was. Another thing to mention about fake looking CGI is that we're going through the Blu-ray of the series The Pacific right now and whereas the DVD displayed fine all through, the Blu-ray is too dark in the night sequences so I've had to turn the laser lamp up full on the video projector which is something I've never had to do before. The end result is that previously computer generated backgrounds looked natural but now they are obviously fake. We had some easily perceptible fakery with the new Indiana Jones movie but nothing on the level you experienced. However, I do find this is more often the case when watching anything on our telly. Whatever we seem to do to modern tellies it seems almost impossible to get them to replicate how a film would look. That's not so much the case with home video projectors. Tellies punch too much light through the video and therefore make the lesser looking computer imagery look less realistic. That seems to be what is going on. It also helps if you have a ten foot screen as you're not taking the whole image in unlike with a telly. Basically, a big home video projection almost replicates a cinema viewing on a huge screen. Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character was getting on my nerves early on but I warmed to her as the movie went on and by the end of it with that knock-out punch, I liked her. I enjoyed the action, chase sequences too but I think I was viewing this one as a comedy which is how I view the other three Indiana Jones films I like. I haven't watched Crystal Skull for about ten years but I do like it. I don't enjoy Temple of Doom but that doesn't mean that I think it's a bad film or anything, I just don't enjoy it.
Right, I'm now 43 minutes in. By the way, one comment on here somewhere confirmed there was a scene in the cinema release that isn't in the home video release. Harrison Ford has a go at Phoebe Waller-Bridge telling her he's almost 80 years old or something. Correct me if you spotted that scene but I don't remember it on the disc release.

I loved the original trilogy with 'Temple of Doom' being my favorite. I think Dial flopped mostly because Ford is just too old to build an action movie around. In fact, I don't think in the history of film making that there has ever been a 79 year old play the lead in an action movie. Sean Connery was 71 in 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' and that also bombed at the box office. I'm still going to see the movie though and I have high hopes for it's success. Paste is flat whereas laminate sits proud of the print. 1600ft reels are the same diameter as 1200ft (which were often about 1400ft in reality) but had a smaller core to maximize the amount of film that could be wound onto them. I've been asking people why they didn't like it (if that was the case because most people do seem to like it) and the main reason seems to have been a social media hate campaign before the film was released. This is because Disney are perceived as being unable to do anything right these days and there was an expectation this would be filled with wokery. I didn't spot anything much, if at all, but because many people got on the campaign bandwagon they didn't give the film a chance. It's not Raiders but it's fun even if it's not a classic like Last Crusade. What else could match those two fabulous Indy films? Nothing is my answer but I loved seeing Harrison Ford and a few of the others return and particularly the beautiful conclusion to the whole thing.

I really enjoyed it. Good action adventure and had the Indy feel to it and I definitely preferred it to Crystal Skull.
I think social media made it fashionable to hate it and I think a lot of that came from peoples distain towards Disney and not in the fact it was a bad film. It’s hard to compete with Raiders which is one of the best films in movie history. So it would never have been as popular as the original trilogy. I also think a lot of people who were negative just didn’t watch it, they heard what others were saying and followed suit.
It shows, as I haven’t spoken to a single person who disliked it but online it’s pure hate.
I watched Equalizer 3 and thought it was shockingly bad, just a poor sequel to the other two and yet in comments online it was lauded. I wish Denzel hadn’t done the third one.
I hope this get some money back with home sales but I think it’s too much of the attitude of people not wanting to put money in Disneys pockets over than not wanting it because it’s a bad film.

    Hello John,
I only now viewed this review Of "Indy 5" . The dutch (BeNeLux) version 4k UHD-BD + BD set will be released on 10 January 2024 , i've already placed my pre-release order. (Strange that they do not choose to release earlier for the x mas season, but anyway.... I'll have to wait a wee bit longer) Thank you for your review. I saw the film in the cinema (on a nice large screen / auditorium wityh good audio) and like you, I VERY MUCH enjoyed it, and was not agreeing with the many very negative reviews of it at the time.
Some of my extended family went to see it in the cinema too, and also thought it a very entertaining film. Every 'Jones' film before this has had fantastical, completely non-realistic elements to the storyline and (almost) nobody seemed to be bothered by that then. (i am referring to part 1 (1981) , 2 and 3) . I feel that is just the 'deal' with a 'Jones' film, you get action, humour, thrills and fantastical elements galore. Absolutely great fun! Glad you feel the same as I do about this part 5 (Dial of Destiny).
I very much look forward to watching the 4k bluray in January 2024 at home on my app. 95in pj-screen with (hopefully) atmos audio.
As always, thanks for the review effort, and please carry on with your great YT content. ('Carry On Streaming' (2024). [LOL] starring John The MovieCollector and, sadly, not so much , Kenneth Williams et al. )

It seems that a lot of us enjoyed it Roland if the comments on here are representative of everyone who has seen the film. It does seem odd that the Dutch release is a little later than other markets but there are probably good reasons for this which we can't think of. Maybe it's something simple like it took longer to master, author and replicate the discs because it had to be right for the Dutch market.
I'm currently writing notes for a review of 2023 video. It's been a busy year with lots of different things going on and I don't suppose I'll ever have another year quite like it so I think it's a worthwhile idea to do a retrospective of everything that's happened. Hopefully it will only be around ten minutes by the time I've trimmed the notes down and cut the video to shreds. I'll aim to shoot something tomorrow and then set about putting it together. You should therefore see me before Christmas and then next week I'll try to do a look at the 4K releases of the year and which are the best (in my opinion).

@@moviecollector5920 The Dutch cinema releases are also later than in th UK, and subsequently, most (but not all) (4k) BD releases are often later than in the UK. Strange as German releases are usually aboput the same tima as the UK releases and germans do additional audio dubbing in german and some subtitles on their diiscs as well. But with a film like Indy 5, i am surprised that they did not bring it forward to before christmas, in the dutch release. But, as you say, they probably have their reasons, which we can only guess at. I am glad in any case, that there IS a dutch 4k bd release coming out. I went in with low expectations but I was pleasantly surprised. It is a fantasy action movie and should be treated as such. It was respectful to the original trio. For a very elderly man Ford is suprisingly fit and spry. His goddaughter is not a likeable character but she's not supposed to be. Loved her in Fleabag. I bought on day of release. More interestingly, I got some 4k's that were enhanced with AI (Namely the Eastwood man with no name westerns). I've got the original 4k movies to compare against and to be honest I much prefer the colour timing of the AI, plus the very harsh grain is almost gone but still looks excellent.
I am by no means an expert or have any technical expertise, if I like something I like it, but anyone else seen the AI upscales and enhancements I am talking about and what are your thoughts? Either way, interesting times the way things are going.
Also... Sidenote, my LG OLED got burn in :-( I was watching a movie review channel (deckershadow or something the channel was called) that had a feint watermark on his older videos, left the reviews running over night and much of the next day (as background noise) and that did it (prior to this, the TV has been running 18 hours per day the past 12'ish+ months with zero picture issues, I was actually surprised how good the tech was at being reliable/resistant to issues).
I know we all know that burn-in is a possibility, but the newer TV's normally recognise static images and shifts things by a pixel every so often, but key issue here is because it was a super feint watermark the guy put on all of his videos the TV hasn't recognised it as a static image and the watermark is now permanent (3/4 way up the screen almost spanning the width of the 65" panel), particularly with solid background colours or oranges - the pixel refresh doesn't work sadly. Bummer.

This film is better than the second film Bob but I've never liked that one despite trying. If you were there for Raiders in 1981 and loved the characters then it's likely you'll enjoy this conclusion to the whole thing. Particularly the ending with a certain actress whom I'm sure we both like a lot.
Upscales... I've done that a bit with my own releases. It's possible to get away with it but there's nothing more there than was there before. I expect what the people do who sell these things - or whatever they do with them - is put in all sorts of digital 'enhancements' to make people think they're getting something better. The 'Dollars' trilogy films were TechniScope so just the next step up from 16mm. There is no way you can make them look special. American Graffiti looks wonderful as a 4K disc but it's never going to be as good as a true 35mm.
As for your telly getting the watermark burned in I don't suppose there's anything you can do other than try to ignore it. We used to get it on CRT computer monitors but I've never seen it on a flat panel.

@@moviecollector5920 Probably the minority, but I quite liked the second one - its a guilty pleasure. Actually watched it more when I was growing up than the first, even though in hindsight I now know the original is a superior movie. I was born 83 though, so I think maybe my age caused the second to appeal more at the time. Although second one can be a bit dark story wise, its more child friendly with short round, whereas I felt the original had a more grown up story/characters.
I struggle to watch the 3rd one as the blonde lady has a uncanny resemblance to an ex of mine and I can't get over it/takes me out of it lol incredibly stupid reason yes, but I broke that poor ladies heart and that actress makes me feel guilty.
Haven't seen the Crystal Skull, I saw the CGI swinging on the vines in the trailer and at the time I thought "hmmmm no" - it could be fantastic though.
I envy the fact you saw the first raiders in the cinema. That punch sound effect must have been incredible.
Although, I might check out this movie at some point, based on your recommendation to see who this mysterious lady is.
The Phoebe Waller Bridge person I am not so keen on, its actually her that puts me off, particularly if she is doing the mary sue outsmarting/I can do it better/well actually thing with Indiana.
Don't get me wrong, I adore strong/smart/independent/quippy female characters like Tippi Hedren/Birds, Sigourney Weaver/Aliens, Linda Hamilton/Terminator, Gaylen Ross/Dawn of the Dead, Carrie Fisher/Star Wars, Janet Leigh/Psycho.
Just not so keen on what Hollywood does with the overpowered female character in recent years, strong/overpowered for the sake of being strong and it isn't through their depth of their character, the poor cheapshots at males etc... Just not my cuppa tea, but it is what it is I guess. Just not finding the new females in the big movies likeable or admirable, so not visiting the cinema for them.
Oh, more importantly... I watched Last Night In Soho last week as I remembered your recommendation, so it was on my radar. Truly excellent and very unique movie! Good recommendation!
The Australian/New Zealand lady (least I think thats where she is from) has a very impressive Cornish accent, suited the character very well.
If you had a PO box I would send you a hard drive with the files. I do take your point though on it isn't a magic bullet in that you can't add things that weren't there in the original video.

@@suavebob Thank you for taking the time with your reply Bob. I wasn't particularly aware of any female superiority in this one but there is some good comedy between Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller Bridge. All these Indy films have been quite deprecating towards the main character and this one didn't seem to be any different to me. I thought Harrison Ford handled it all supremely well as usual. Hopefully you'll find the same things when you finally get around to seeing it. The leading lady in Last Crusade was excellent so if you can ever get past breaking your young lady's heart then I think you'll see that film the same way I do. I think it's one of Connery's three best ever roles along with Highlander and The Untouchables. As for Last Night In Soho, that is one of my favourite films of recent years. I need to watch it again but I never seem to get the time to re-visit films any longer.

Speaking of Disney products, are you planning to purchase the Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 this month? I would love to see what you think of it as a Star Wars fan.

I might do one day but I seem to have less and less time for series these days. I am making an exception for Star Trek Picard series 3 though which is awaiting a chance to watch the first episode.

@@moviecollector5920Fair enough but it’s only a short series with only 8 episodes per season. Most episodes are less than 40 minutes as well.

Great review, I’m glad I’m not alone, I liked Dial of Destiny too. I saw it twice in the theater, the first 20 minutes was awesome, the closest we’ll ever get to the 1980’s Indy films again. I wish they would’ve wrote a better ending to bringing Indy back to his present time, but other than that, I thought his decisions and motivations were all within character. Definitely a better finish then Crystal Skull and I’m happy we got to see Indy one last time.

You'll be pleased to know that most of the comments on here about the latest Indiana Jones film have been positive. A few genuinely didn't enjoy it much but that's normal whereas others had been consumed by the social media hate campaign. People are so easily led and seem to like getting on a band wagon. I'd like to find the time to watch Crystal Skull again because I enjoyed that one too. The only film in the series I never liked was Temple of Doom but as I've pointed out to so many people within these comments, that doesn't mean it's a bad film it simply means that I don't enjoy it.
