JAWS 2 4K COMPARED to JAWS 4K UHD

  • This is a comparison of the Jaws 2 4K UHD Blu-ray release against the Jaws 4K UHD originally released in May 2020. Jaws is quite possibly the best 35mm to video transfer I've seen so far but because some comments had come in about Jaws 2 being just as good, I thought it would be an idea to scrutinize them both to see how well Jaws 2 holds up. It's pretty good.

Jaws was scanned at 8K 16bit…it was then downsampled to 4K. There is a short documentary on RUclips on the restoration of the movie for the 4K release from Universal. It’s a great insight into how much work and love they put into the release. Definitely worth a watch.
As always, another interesting and insightful video from yourself 👏🏼

That's the documentary where I took the information from but I thought they said 5.6K. If it was 8K then that surely proves the point so thank you for that. If only 70mm was scanned at 15K and IMAX at 45K then we might see even better imagery on the best 4K home movie disc releases. John.

@@moviecollector5920 such a shame then that all the classics aren’t given the same love as this film was. Jurassic Park comes to mind as does Star Wars, and many more. I’m sure you could make a separate video on just this subject alone, the movies that you would like to see receive the same treatment as Jaws did, and then have the studio make a short documentary on the processes.

@@SuperExige The time it takes has got to be a factor Talat. I expect 4K is a bit of a compromise but at least there aren't many being done at 2K any longer. Such a shame that Last Night In Soho was only done at 2K otherwise that might have looked so much better than it did. But the movie business is a business and it's all about making money. It's fabulous that we're even getting this quality on video now which I never would have thought was possible. Just a shame we're not readily able to see real film in cinemas very often these days. After all, what's the point in going if cinema is only offering the same as what you can see at home a few months later?

@@moviecollector5920 interesting points John. So originally we were watching 35/70mm prints when we used to go to the cinema, then the advent of digital, we were/are watching 2K DI. All of the studios have archived their inventory digitally, they have been cleaned and restored either with 8K or 4K scans, and there is a recent trend where classics are being rereleased at the cinemas in 4K. For me this is a treat, as I was either too young to see the movie or missed it completely at the cinema. The Godfather 4K restoration and release back into the cinema for its 50th Anniversary is one that comes to mind. I was 5 when that was released in the cinemas, and so many more that I missed, Apocalypse Now!! so there is still a valid reason for us to see the 4K home releases at the cinema, on the biggest screen with the best audio we can find. That’s coming from me, I own a Sony laser projector with a 117” screen (couldn’t get bigger for my room😕) with a 7.4.2 Atmos sound setup. The big epics/blockbusters still have to be experienced at the cinema, Oppenheimer, Dead Reckoning, The Creator are a few examples that I watched at the cinemas and will be owning on 4K physical media for the home 😊

I think for those of us who've seen Jaws 2 on various formats countless times over the years, we weren't really expecting anything special from the 4K presentation of Jaws 2. Even in the opening shots, I sat up in my chair quite taken aback as to how good it looked. I've never seen Jaws 2 look as good as it currently does on this 4K disc, I think its quite special. Most excellent John, thank you! A personal tidbit, Jaws 2, like Close Encounters, was filmed near my home area north Florida and south Alabama; Jaws 2 at Navarre Beach, FL. in the Florida panhandle. Cast and crew stayed at the Navarre Beach Holiday Inn, and several scenes filmed inside the motel's indoor pool area, and immediately behind the beach side motel for outdoor/ocean scenes. Close Encounters of Third Kind, about an hour west in Mobile, AL. I forget the sequence, but both filmed in 77/78 I believe, with Jaws 2 definitely spring/summer 1977.

@@moviecollector5920 Unfortunately, although the original Jaws 3 is in 3D, it is a bad film and not worthy to be a sequel to Jaws, the only good thing about it is the fun 3D so I don't think even a 4K would help it haha! Yes, surprisingly in 2022 on September 2nd, the stereoscopic conversion of the original Jaws had a limited release in cinemas. If I recall, John, I was enjoying John Williams’ new music for Jaws 2 more than the film when watching in the cinema in ‘78… I subsequently bought the soundtrack LP and played it endlessly… Therefore, having a soft affection for the film, I imported the 4k in a sale, as the US version also includes a blu-ray, but, unlike many releases there is no difference in the extras between the two discs.
I read some negative comments that the audio on the 4k release is only ‘2.0’ thereby only having the original mono soundtrack. That’s ok with me since it’s the original audio and not re-purposed. I don’t mind these re-purposed or revisionist soundtracks, but I like a release when it also includes the original audio mix.
It’s good to hear that ‘Splice Here’ is going to receive a wider blu-ray release. I’m looking forward to viewing it.

Good point about the music Stephen because it is wonderful. If this release had have been a nicer package when it was released six months ago or whenever it was then I would have paid the £25 for it, but picking it up in FOPP and feeling that it was a bit lightweight I thought I'd be better off spending £25 on a couple of other releases. That was a shame at the time because people had asked me to review it. As it's turned out I managed to get it for just £12.50 in that 2 for £25 sale and I've still managed to fashion a sort of 4K review out of it so it was a win all around really.
Splice Here: A Projected Odyssey should be coming soon and I'll keep my ear to the ground so I can hopefully point everyone to where to buy it sometime next year - and hopefully early next year.

    Good video, John!
Like yourself, I'm a huge JAWS fan, but I also love JAWS 2. It can't touch the original of course (what could?) but I think it does a good job of recapturing a lot of the feel of its predecessor despite being shot mostly in Florida.
I think what allows it to stand on its own merit is John Williams great music. He really scored the heck out of that movie with some wonderful new themes that help to give it a flavor of its own.
The teen actors aren't very good, but the movie really comes to life anytime Roy is onscreen.
And it's funny how the movie itself is like a slasher, isn't it? I'm a huge fan of that genre; maybe that's why I love 2 so much.
Anyway, I just got the 4K/blu ray combo in the mail the other day, and look forward to watching it soon.

Funnily enough Bill, I only said to my wife today that Jaws 2 is more like a slasher film but that format hadn't really taken off in 1978 and came after the success of Halloween. That's always been my understanding of it anyway. The major factor in the success of Jaws was the three leading men. Without that magic ingredient the film would have been a shadow of what it was and that it largely what is missing in Jaws 2. That and some horror perhaps because there's not really anything grizzly shown on screen that I can recall right now. Fun for anyone who can't get enough of Jaws and that was largely why I finally fancied taking another look at it. John.

Interestingly we've just watched the new Indiana Jones 4K disc and the best settings were exactly the same as Jaws and Jaws 2 4K discs. The brightness of the image on this video projector is the main consideration because it's too bright most of the time. This is an issue I see on just about every television and I think it's because people have been convinced by someone that brightest is best which it certainly isn't. To get a filmic look it needs to be easy on the eyes and that basically means darker. John.

Trevor's a very nice person and extremely knowledgeable. It's wonderful that he's helping people around the world. i should have let him have a play with my video projector but I didn't even think about it. I expect he'd prefer a slightly different look to me but I don't suppose he'd be too far away from my own preferences as he also appreciates a projected image that looks like film. There's nothing like having a projected image on a big screen because that's what cinema is so it's always been a lot of fun for me to do it in miniature. But I used to enjoy watching LaserDiscs and early DVD's on our first widescreen telly which we purchased in February 1995. That was the first sub £1000 set available in the UK and we had it for 23 years. Video projection came of age during that time of course so it was only used for watching television from 2006 but I loved it and was almost heartbroken when it finally had to go to the knacker's yard. Watching films on a great television is still a wonderful thing to be able to do. Who would ever have thought home video would get to be as good as it is now. I never believed it would but I'm so happy that it has.

It won't be the same for every system and so it's a question of playing. People don't tend to experiment so much with tellies but even with a television the backlight, the brightness, contrast and HDR can all be tweaked to suit a disc. Best of luck. In other words, I was too late as I'd already sat down and recorded all the waffle. I haven't watched the Blu-ray yet other than all the extras/outtakes which are excellent. As soon as I learn of a disc release for elsewhere in the world I'll include the information in a future video. I'm very pleased to have a copy on Blu-ray.
I hope the weather down there is a little warmer than it is here right now. At least the fog is clearing. John Carpenter could have shot another film here overnight it was that thick. A real pea-souper.

You and me both, Graham. I went to see it and, yes, it was a very well done conversion: It managed to make one of my all-time favourite films look even better. Such a shame that the 3D version existed for just a very brief moment in the cinema and is now very possibly gone forever. I mean, I do think it's something of a travesty that Jaws 2 gets a 4K UHD release, but the 3D version of Jaws doesn't get a Blu-ray release. On the plus side, Spielberg's other legacy conversion, Jurassic Park, is a stunning 3D Blu-ray (and, for me, by far the best way to watch that film).

So admittedly the returns were progressively diminishing but they all girl-aged to sneak a profit. I have the Super 8 3x400ft edition and that's probably even better than the complete film. Sometimes the forced cuts made for ingenious editing that simply worked. It's about 48 minutes and doesn't let up from beginning to end. As for The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, I'm pretty sure that's another TechniScope so the next step up from 16mm. People have told me it's excellent and I'm sure they're right because so is American Graffiti shot using the same half size 35mm format.

It wasn't at all muffled in here Dave but I expect many home systems will have struggled with the soundtrack. It looked very good at ten feet wide and I think we'd find it would still look pretty good fifty feet wide. When a film looks good from the original shoot then it shrinks down to all the other formats to exhibit similar superior quality. Interestingly, some of Jaws 2 was shot 16mm. I wonder if that was for the shark point of view shots so that the cameraman wouldn't have a rig quite as cumbersome as a 35mm camera while riding on the model at high speed.

Being into film making using film then we went to the video age. Love my home built 3D stadium seating theatre. I’m wondering if you are familiar with video calibration disc. Not so much the Spears and Munsel (if that’s how you spell it) but the Disney two discs set titled WOW. The reason I prefer the Disney one is it came with a blue filter you placed over your eye to help you calibrate your colour and tint of your TV/Projector. And because we can save many tv settings. I’ve made my calibration exactly how the discs suggest based on the motion picture industry. And then one setting where I’ve tweaked it a bit to my liking and haven’t had to adjust my tv/projector again. Except at the time I was doing this. There was no disc made to help calibrate 3D viewing. So I made one and gave it to the Theatre Forum Community as a iso download for free so they could burn or use the file to calibrate their own projector/tv. But a half a year later a company came along with a disc for 3D calibration. Anyways if you didn’t know about the Disney Wow disc. You may want to take a look into. If you can still find the BLURAY. Or maybe your audience. Thanks again! - Toronto, Canada.

Most seem to prefer a "brightest is best" approach to setting up a telly of video projector but I find that makes the image look like video. In other words, film is generally darker and that's how I set any electronic method of displaying imagery too. I don't go for overly enhanced colours either so just about every home system I see drives me a little nuts. I get the impression that your own methods of setting something up will be similar to myself though Mike. I never seem to ever completely finish fiddling though as there are always minor tweaks that will improve the appearance of a particular home video disc.

I think you would like the Disney WOW disc. You use your own eyes of course. But its key feature is the Blue Gel Lens they give you to cover one of your eyes as you Adjust your Colour and tint so it's accurate to Hollywood standards. Which means most of the film makers are watching their images with the same calibration, and you could be watching it exactly like the film maker intended. But i find it not dark enough. So I have made a tweaked setting. I think you would like it. Even just for fun. It goes through everything from contrast, to sharpness, to turning your DNR on or off. Then gives you another disc full of sample footage. I was very very impressed how it made my TV look after having watched i for so long. I was also able to fix my friends TV cause everyones face looked a little too red. I guess as his TV aged, the tint setting were off, and with the Blue Gell Card and looking at the Colour Bar Test pattern and understanding how it works I was able to adjust his tint and now his TV looks brand new. And he's been watching bad TV for the last 5 years. Looking forward to more videos from you. I think you are doing smashing job sir. Thank you.animorphic

@@mikekaye3874 Just about everyone has their telly set too bright but to be fair just about all televisions are used with lights on and in daylight hours so not entirely set up to get the best out of watching a film.
Super 8 is always going to be prohibitively expensive now owing to the cost of film. If the film industry (now there's an anachronism today as they should probably be called 'the video industry') returned to shooting just about everything on film then the cost of Super 8 would plummet owing to volume of film stock availability. New Super 8 film projectors could be designed and built to care for film in the best possible way because it is so easy to scratch the Super 8 gauge. And new digital soundtracks with suitable readers could be developed to get over the problems of magnetic sound and tiny optical sound tracks. It's a shame someone like Elon Musk was never into the Super 8 film making and film collecting hobby because it would be a drop in the ocean for a wealthy benefactor.

I think we tend to think of a cine transfer as being someone sat there ensuring everything is aligned and looking as clear as possible but that's no longer the case because bespoke scanners are used for the task these days. It's therefore not the transfer so much that results in the quality we see, it's the quality of the film as originally shot. All these scanners do is scan and then video editors and/or graders set to work on making it look as close to the look of the original film as possible. John.

Jaws 2 is unfairly criticized by a lot of people. It makes me enjoy the original Jaws less and less these days! I am the opposite of you in that I enjoy Jaws 2 way more than Jaws these days. The teens don’t bother me. I was once an “annoying teen.” Most people tend to forget they were as well when criticizing teens in movies. As far as the boxoffice “telling its own story” goes, The Empire Strikes Back had a sharp drop off in ticket sales compared to the original Star Wars and yet it is still considered the superior film to Star Wars. So if Jaws 2 is a flop in your eyes, so too is Empire Strikes Back. Just something for you to consider. Jaws 2 is a great film to many of us and I HIGHLY recommend this 4K release!!!!

I do like The Empire Strikes Back but it's not a patch on the original. I can't recall the box office of that one but I seem to have it in my head that it was around two-thirds which is more normal for a sequel. Jaws 2 didn't get a very good reception but it wasn't only that, too many rip-offs appeared in the intervening years and people were a little tired of the format by 1978. I may not particularly like Jaws 2 but I don't dislike it. John.

@@moviecollector5920 The Empire Strikes Back is vastly superior to Star Wars on all fronts! Even the critics agree. Better story, better character development, improved special effects, and Billy Dee Williams! Star Wars can’t possibly compete with that. The boxoffice was down by about $237 million from Star Wars. The boxoffice from Jaws 2 was down about $289 million from Jaws. It too did one third or 40% of the boxoffice take of Jaws which was according to producer David Brown, “gargantuan.” I couldn’t agree more. Even if it didn’t get a nice reception, the audience had the last word with Jaws 2, as well it should have. I think te reason it gets a hard time is not because of people being tired of the format, but because of people complaining about the teens and liking it to a slasher flick which to be honest, ALL shark films are slasher flicks in a way. Including the original Jaws!!!!
