The Bunny Chow's name has Gujurati origins, apparently. It meant something completely different (maybe "bread curry" or something like that), and people misheard the name or made a joke out of it, even? Like how Hot Dog started out as a joke. I read the full details on the Internet once, but have lost the link. If yours was too mild for you, try the ones they have at *Some Like It Hot* in Hillcrest next time you're here. It's origins would've just been as a food portable enough to take to work, with the clever twist that you can eat the container.
Umqombothi is not a dairy product. It's sorghum beer, originally - with maize added later when that reached Southern Africa. It would probably be closer to what you know as "beer" if it was strained and clarified more, but it's "food beer", so the crushed grain is left in suspension. Maybe if there was a version which added hops it would be even closer to what's familiar. It's one of those things you have to give time to acclimatize to - just like you probably had to acclimatize to things like beer and wine when you were a youngster, and they still tasted horrible to you. Climate is the wrong word, but it'll do. Nice thing is that it's low alcohol. 2% or lower.
For a South African chain take-away that produces great food, try Nandos. Hot Peri Peri chicken (Portuguese), mild lemon chicken, all flame grilled, and no batter.
    And then there's biltong ...

Eating a bunny chow in Cape Town is like eating a spaghetti bolognaise in India. If you want a really good authentic bunny chow, you need to go to Durban.

@@itsyaboi2l2q I spent many years in Durban back in the 70's and 80's so I grew up on lots of Indian food and bunny chows. I eventually became a chef in London and used to make authentic lamb and chicken bunny chows for friends on weekends. They were extremely popular with my mates but I learned how to make them in Durban.

Yeah for sure, i was trying to focus on foods from all over SA not just capetown.
I did have gatsby on the list actually but i was filming this in March 2020 over a couple days, then covid started and I had to fly out of africa ASAP as the president was closing down the border to flights.
I also had planned on going to a winery and an ostrich farm
