The best parts of sonny with a chance were the parts that had nothing to do with the show, the relationships between the characters were what kept me watching

I’m Demi’s age, but I loooooved SWAC but with others have said - the rivalry between Mackenzie Falls and So Random and the chemistry between Sterling Knight and Demi Lovato as Chad Dylan Cooper and Sonny was absolutely everything. The sketches all that were probably the measured memorable parts of the show. (Although I will say the Check It Out Girls sketch is still one that I actually remember enjoying lmao)

For everyone asking themselves why this show ? Just 3 words : Chad Dylan Cooper. Sadly, he wasn't in the pilot, and sadly enough you mostly focus on reviewing pilots, which for most shows are hardly their best vitrines. Still, considering the So Randoms sketches as the worst part of the show is a quite solid euphemism 😅
He was an icon, a legend, and a moment, honestly if he wasn't there, I wouldn't be. Who would I ship Sonny with otherwise?

This show definitely got better as it went on (until Demi left, of course). Sonny’s relationship with Chad Dylan Cooper was actually pretty fun, and a lot of the characters got more interesting and less cringe as the show went on.
Yeah, Season 2 was when the show was starting to get really good. Season 1 was a bit cheesy and a little weird, ngl (since it gave off some Hollywood Camp Rock vibes; probably because Demi came straight out of Camp Rock)… but Season 2 gave us a bit better comedy (So Random! skit parts improved a bit), more music (with Sonny singing more, along with more musical sketches), Sonny and her relationship with Chad (which added for some more drama and comedic relief), improved chemistry among the characters, better storylines (for most episodes), etc. I will admit, Season 2 was still cheesy, but in a good way. Season 2 made me laugh more, especially if you watch Sonny and Chad’s first date. I’m sure the third season would’ve been good, if it would’ve happened.

Disney's been around for like 100 years and I'm sure there were a lot of funny guys in their movies and shows throughout the years (you said DISNEY HISTORY instead of DISNEY _CHANNEL_ HISTORY and now I gotta find someone to rewatch these ridiculous sitcoms with me)
The part about her mom leaving her there is horrifying. A teenage girl being left alone in that environment. It's not a new story, especially for Disney. And it's Disney saying "she'll be fine," cue the villain song.
Chad Dylan Cooper was the only actual funny character on this show. His humor and the chemistry between him and Sonny is what kept us watching.

THIS USED TO BE MY FAVOURITE SHOW! Channy was by far THE best disney couple! And Sonny and Tawni's friendship developing was also a great part of the show!
The worst part of Sonny with A Chance for me is how Sonny actually wants to be friends with everyone that she fails to see how notice some of them, especially Tawni who has downright tortured her psychologically and she never gets punished for it because Sonny insists that they’re friends!! Disney Channel has got to stop encouraging viewers to stay with toxic friends (reason I love Amphibia 🐸 and The Owl House 🦉)
I just always saw it as Tawni had a crush on her. Sonny knew but preferred not to dig dip into it because she didn’t like her in that way but it was beneficial to her at times. Ex: when Tawni drove Sonny to that stupid cheese thing.

This show is a great example of why you should never judge shows by their pilots. Every show needs at least three episodes to judge properly. So Random in the show is actively made fun of for being stupid and the rivalry between their show and MacKenzie falls is half of the fun. Not to mention, like a lot of the comments have said, Chad Dylan Cooper really carries this show.
Pilot episodes are literally made to be judged on whether a show is worth it. TV program execs determine which show they want to greenlight based on their pilots. Even though I admittedly liked Sonny as a kid, looking back I honestly have no clue how this show got through 💀
I didnt really care for this show at the time, and I didnt think i'd remember any of it, but I somehow remember everything he showed off like a long forgotten memory I wanted to forget. But Definitely agree that should NEVER judge a show on the pilot. You'd think you should be able to coz it's the 1st episode people judge so it should be good right? NOPE. I almost always hate the pilots. I always watch at least 2-3 episodes, after I almost wrote off Doctor Who because I went into it blind, and the whole "mannequins taking over the world" story wasnt sitting with me for a whole 5 season show lol. And ever since then I was always relieved to hate trailers of shows and start really enjoying the show if I can make it past the pilot. lol. And oh boy when I tried to watch the original 1st episode of doctor who...that Caveman Episode was torture. I truly wonder how the show started from that...it was so damn boring! It was so short, but felt like an eternity.

It breaks my heart to hear what Disney did to these kids. Demi was forced to get their GED so Disney could work them basically constantly from shooting to press tours in Europe. How any of this was legal is beyond me….it’s definitely not ethical.

Easily the best part of this show was Demi and Sterling's chemistry, you knew that Chad and Sonny were going to be together but damn, did they have to go over a loooot of obstacles to make that happen and when they actually became a couple, it was literally perfection. They were so meant for each other and it was so much fun watching them. And what's even better is that I think both of their characters had changed for the better since their relationship challenged them in so many ways. The show wasn't the greatest at first but it definitely got better

Yes 😆 I’ll never understand why the main character was so mean to Christopher for literally no reason whatsoever the entire movie but I loved it. “Something about the sunshine” still pops in my head every now and then. It had some catchy songs!

I think the only things I truly cared about when watching this show were the relationships between the characters, especially Sonny and Chad. I don't think I really paid very much attention to the rest of the show. I was also aging out of this sort of show when it was on. I don't think I ever saw the second season, because I don't remember Demi look so grown up

I binge watched both seasons of this show over two days when I was sick with the flu. I think watching it with a raging fever and pausing to puke every twenty minutes is the best way to do it. I haven't seen an episode since.
Before that, though, So Random was the first show I watched on Disney channel, so it still holds a special place in my heart even if it's pure garbage.

When 'So Random' did a spoof of 'Mackenzie Falls' called 'Mackenzie Stalls' I was no good after that sketch 😂 I was in TEARS from laughing at how ridiculous yet accurate it was to those teen drama shows 😂
If _this_ is the worst Disney Channel show you’ve ever seen, then you clearly haven’t watched Dog With a Blog or Bizaardvark yet. Not saying this show is good, but it’s a masterpiece compared to those two shows.
Bizaardvark at least had some funny/imaginative songs like the Pyro song or the Overly Dramatic song. I’m not saying it was worth 22 minutes of crap for 2 minutes of slight chuckles but at least there were some to be had unlike Dog With a Blog.

| I used to skip the So Random skits because I couldn’t really get into them but I remember really enjoying the idea that the show was more about what happened behind the scenes. Especially the whole rivalry with Mckenzie Falls and then the enemies to lovers thing they did with Sonny and Chad. There were some genuinely good episodes and I remember actually laughing out loud with some of the jokes 😁
I appreciate how aware Sonny With A Chance is about how over dramatic it is. So Random isn’t funny, but thankfully they have Chad Dylan Copper, he carried the show

This was one of the only things that cheered my little brother up when he was in the hospital going through VICIOUS brain surgery and cancer treatments when he was about 8, my mom and I ended up enjoying it too. I think mostly because it made us happy to see him happy. Sonny and Chad really made the show, everyone else is pretty expendable.

my favorite shows were Drake and Josh, Kim Possible, Phineas and Ferb, WIzards of Waverly Place and Avatar, I can watch any of those even know and they are amazing.

@@davidturner6280 I was 20 when all this shows went around, and I watched them with my baby daughter. The funny thing is that I liked so much Phineas and Ferb and Avatar that we rewatche them every now an then, and they still work. Wizards of Wv Place I liked it a lot because the main character was a bad girl with a nerd brother, and that premise was very interesting, but it didn't age so well and the realization of the episodes was not so good either, but it had its highlights.

sonny with a chance sort of feels like a fever dream to me. i remember watching it religiously as a child but i hardly remember anything about the actual show. looking back… i truly wonder how i managed to be so engaged in a show like… that.
edit: seeing all the comments about Chad makes me remember that yes, he was the reason i kept watching the show and, i’m ngl, i had a big crush on the man too when i was younger 😅

I always struggled to accept the sketch show part of the series, since it didn't make sense to me that Tawny had a diva complex about being on a teen comedy sketch show. If she was a disgraced actress who was booted off of that teen drama they rivaled with, I could understand her.

The show really wasn’t all that bad. Yes some of the jokes were cringy, but I enjoyed it. Saying it’s the worst is not even close to truth. Not to me. I’ve seen far worst things from Disney than this. It’s not a masterpiece, but it has definitely made me laugh. I loved the characters, including Sonny and her optimism (even at times it could get annoying). I loved some of the sketches. And even when watching it again on Disney+ I still enjoyed it. Again if this show wasn’t the greatest, it still wasn’t a nightmare for me. But you’re entitled to your opinion.

I think you really did it a disservice reviewing it without Sterling Knight. He was honestly the best part of the show, and the romance arc between his character and Sonny was probably why I enjoyed the show as much as I did. There's a lot of cringe, especially in that first episode, but it's still enjoyable as a binge show. I will agree the So Random segments were the worst part though lol

If I’m not mistaken, Sonny with a Chance was the one of the first “show within a show” series on Disney Channel. I’ve always loved sketch shows (not including SNL) so this was nice to see when I was younger. Some sketches are quite memorable and it got better before it ended.

Man I loved Sonny With A Chance as a kid (this show def gets better after the first episode) and I was so mad when it was canceled and we never got an ending (I'm like 90% sure S2 ended on a cliffhanger). And when it just turned into So Random skits, I was not having it since I was expecting the story to continue.

The show was cancelled since I think Demi had to go to rehab, so they purposefully ended the show that way. It wasn't necessarily a cliffhanger but it was when chad and sonny weren't together which STILL gets me to this day why couldn't it just be a happy ending for them

I know you get this every time you review a show, but you SERIOUSLY need to watch more of it to get why people like it.
I don’t know if you’ve heard of the three episode rule, but it is a good metric for figuring out the true vibe of a show.
But its the pilot, you should be able to judge a show just off the pilot itself. I'm not going to invest my time in more episodes "because it gets good later" when I should be able to judge it off the pilot alone.
@@wildste Pilots are just the intro. Sometimes the pilot is written and the rest of the show isn’t planned out until it gets the green light and things change. You shouldn’t judge a show based just on the pilot because the pilot is just a teaser. Between writing the first episode and the second, new writers are brought on and things are added to affect the dynamics of the show. Sometimes the pilot is entirely filmed before the rest of the season is.
The three episode test is a chance to see if the writers ironed out any quirks or problems. It is common for television to run on three episode arcs, and often the first three episodes will be an introduction arc. CDC is a major character in Sonny with a Chance, but isn’t even introduced until episode 2.
Think about the first episode of any show. They may be good episodes, but they almost never fully reflect the entirety of the season, let alone the show as a whole. However, the first three episodes can give an audience a chance to see if there is something worth staying for.

We’re introduced to the characters through Houghie’s pov and at the end, he kills translucent, cementing himself as part of the team and now a part of their goal. Episodes 2 and 3 flesh out the world and the characters to help us understand where the show will go from here, now that the norm has been established, let’s see how our hero or heroes will change it.
@@wildste Pilots can have stuff to keep you watching, and they need it, but just because something interesting happens in the pilot, doesn’t mean the show is or isn’t worth watching. There are plenty of shows I’ve watched that have great pilot episodes, but by the third episode, I’ve lost interest.
I think it’s ridiculous to ask a person to sit through two seasons of a show for it to “get good”, but it isn’t much to have a person give a show three episodes before they decide if they like the vibe of the show or not.
Plus, shows like the Boys are based on the franchises, and Amazon knew from the jump that it’d have a whole season. The Boys didn’t have to go through pilot season stuff like other shows. When a show can be planned way in advance without many changes occurring, that’s great. However, it isn’t the reality for 90% of the shows.
Pilots are introductions to the status quo. Basically exposition. The follow up episodes are usually where you can see where the premise is going and if they writers are creative enough to do anything entertaining with it.
As someone who didn't grow up with Disney Channel or Nickelodeon, Alex has introduced me to some of the most God-awful entertainment ventures I had no clue were on this planet.
And I can't decide whether to hate it or love it.

this was my favourite show on disney channel as a kid 😭 and even now, while I do obviously find some of the jokes a little cringy, I feel like it holds up.
Fun fact: Demi Lovato and Tiffany Thorton are still friends today. Demi was one of her bridesmaids a few years back

Me and my best friend actually started rewatching this show for the first time since we were kids and we love it. Mainly because watching Sterling and Demi interact is top tier, but it also has a lot of nostalgia for us.
It still has pretty funny moments!

Personally, I only liked the show for the Demi and Sterling interactions. Every time they were on screen with one another, it was actually quite entertaining. Everything else was just... so random. No pun intended.

One redeeming thing about this show was the enemies to lovers relationship of Sonny and Chad because they had really great chemistry, my 14 year old heart was totally invested in them lmao. But other than that it was a chaotic dumpster fire.
Don't judge it by the pilot, Season 1 is a Disney Channel masterpiece. We also have Sonny and Chad with their undeniable chemistry.
When I was watching the promos for Camp Rock back in the day, I was sure that Demi would be the villain of the story.

To be brutally honest I loved this show so much LOL. I hated the So Random parts, but Demi had real chemistry with the love interest and it changed my childhood world.
Like I was so addicted to this show I would watch the episodes on RUclips every week when they came out on my iPod Touch because it wouldn't come out in my country for months after

I think you should review the second episode! That's where Chad and Mackenzie Falls got introduced to the show and a lot of the actual plot and substance started to take shape. This episode was quite cringe, but the pilot never really does the show a lot of justice
Sterling Knight was why I watched Sonny with a Chance. His and Sonny's romance was fantastic and his humor was better than most Disney humor!

Alex tried to make me avoid the wiki page for Tiffany Thornton, when it is mostly OK. Like, she did a few more minor shows, had her husband die unexpectedly, worked in radio, remarried, and works as a college recruiter. She's not into drugs, dead, or anything awful.

Yeah. What did he want to imply? Some young actors decide, later on, to quit acting and that's a perfectly respectable decision. Fame is not all it seems to be. Besides, Tiffany has gone through some terrible, life-changing experiences, but she survived and (I think) is happier now than she could have ever been as an actress.
The thing that you have to remember about these shows is that it's not about how clever the writing was/n't, or how funny it actually was/n't, but instead whether the main character represented wish fulfillment for the young girls watching it. Which means the girl has to be 1) pretty, 2) extremely talented (and if it's something like Sonny With a Chance where the talent is "being funny", show-don't-tell rules need _not_ apply, having all the other characters laugh and call her funny is enough), and also shy/quirky/etc. enough that all the "not-like-other-girls" girls find her relatable. Because if they can relate to the main character, they can project, and suddenly _they're_ the pretty and talented one. Bonus points if the other characters on the show make fun of her for being shy/quirky or for another inexplicable reason because then the audience can go "see, she's unappreciated and bullied despite being amazing...just like _me_"
So if you're wondering who could have possibly enjoyed these shows at the time...that's who.

This is why I always liked Nickelodeon's shows more than Disney's. Disney had a lot of squeaky-clean wish fulfillment characters, whereas Nick always had much stronger characters with defined personalities. Clarissa, Salute Your Shorts, Pete and Pete, etc. all had incredibly strong female characters who weren't just there to be a blank slate. (Admittedly I was a preteen in the early '90s, as you can already tell by my list of shows, so idk if Nick still has the same kind of great writing.)

I don’t remember this as well as stuff like Suite Life, Drake & Josh, iCarly, etc. but I think you hit the nail on the head that it is the meta-ness of it. Being a working actor now, I always was drawn to the shows of kids being actors and seeing all the behind the scenes of it and that’s exactly what Sonny was. Plus I remember the actors gaining really good chemistry as the show went on. But yeah watching this with you I don’t remember why I liked it as a kid 😂

I actually really liked this show when I was little. But then when it ended, I completely forgot that it even existed until recently. So, I'm glad it was reviewed.

When my daughter was younger she loved this show and to be honest I did too lol. It was made to be super cheesy and over the top though. I’m sure watching it now would be different, but it holds a lot of good memories even more so now after losing my daughter in a car accident recently. The music video/song “Socks With Sandals” from one of the episodes was always one of our favorites and something we laugh about and sing anytime one of us do it. So I recommend watching it for a laugh lol. Either way love your videos and reviews
