  • Apple today announced major changes to its app ecosystem in the European Union, implementing updates that will allow iPhone and iPad users to download and install apps outside of the App Store through alternative app marketplaces.
    There are other changes coming as well. Users in the European Union will have an option to choose a default browser after updating to iOS 17.4, with Apple providing a list of the most downloaded browsers.
    ‌App Store‌ rules around iCloud gaming are being updated globally to make it easier for users to download and enjoy games.

    One big question about browsers on iOS - will they be able to have their own rendering engines? That’s been a big limitation of iOS browsers, they all use the iOS-supplied WebKit rendering engine. So Firefox for iOS isn’t really using the Firefox Gecko rendering engine. Will this update allow the Firefox for iOS to use Gecko?

    • @EvzenEmanuel
      @EvzenEmanuel 5 месяцев назад +9

      yes, they will have own rendering endine. That's the point.

      @@EvzenEmanuel That is not clear. All that is clear is that “alternative browsers can be made default.” Alternative browsers are available now, with the limitation that they use the OS WebKit rendering engine. Nothing in this video specifies alternate engines.
      Searching separately; I do see a page on Apple’s Developer website saying that in the EU, browsers may now use alternate engines. Dan didn’t mention that part in the video.

    To those thinking apple is letting anyone easily add a 3rd party app it's not, you are still holded by apple. The conditions are in a such a way that no small bussiness would try going the alternative way.
    Under the App Store's new fee structure for Europe, if you make $10 million in sales, Apple's cut is $6.2 million annually.
    Assuming you have no operating costs or salaries, your take home amount:
    $2 million after tax-or 20% of your sales

    • @CheekyTheCheekster
      @CheekyTheCheekster 5 месяцев назад

      Third party apps mean installing apps outside of App Store, if you have android, you can install any app without having to root your device. On iOS you can’t install apps outside of AppStore, unless you pay apple

    • @SuperWolfkin
      @SuperWolfkin 3 месяца назад

      Side loading is to practice of installing apps that don't come directly from the app store. So for instance, on an iPhone when people used to jailbreak them and then install apps that were no longer on the app store that is side loading. On Android apps are in what are called APK files. If you can download an APK from somewhere, you can open it on your Android phone and it will install so you don't have to use the app store. On iOS you can download apps. You can't install them unless you jailbroken your iPhone because Apple doesn't allow that. This new rule means that Apple will allow some way of installing apps that don't go through the app store. This typically means things like you can pay epic for fortnite directly on the epic store rather than the Apple store.
      That said, there are a lot of restrictions. One of the major ones is you have to have the same app in the iOS app store that you have on your own app store. So for instance, epic with fortnite would have to have the same version of fortnite in the app store that they have on their store. That kind of defeats the purpose of the whole personalized app store because epic might for instance want to allow people to pay for in that purchases directly in the app. But that's against Apple's rules. So they would have to not allow that on their app store because it's not allowed on Apple's app store.

      The workaround is to sue them in the United States and say that it's not a fair playing field I'm pretty sure it will go to Supreme Court but they may well say that if we were doing it in the year they will have to do it in the United States because that's where they're based, I'm pretty sure there's a lawyer out there somewhere I'll find a way to get this off the ground, Maybe even the United States own competition rules can pull it off but I'm pretty sure that there's no way this isn't gonna end up in America at some point either through a lawsuit or voluntarily.

    To have alternetive app stores. Seems a bit much on their rules. You need 1mil euros to even start one (small businesses can’t start a business as a AppStore without a 1 million euro loan), plus a 300 euro enterprise account, also after first 1mil installs it will fine €0.50 per install per Apple ID for the year. I wouldn’t have google maps if I didn’t want to use it, if I didn’t want to use google maps I would have never downloaded it in the first place and just used Apple Maps, so please Apple let us set our own default maps app for all our Apple devices.

    Can't Apple fuck off when the user wants so? Why should Apple make sure that an alternative app store meets Apple's "criteria for customer experience"? If a customer wanted that, he would simply be using Apple's App Store. The very reason he is trying to use another app store is to get out of Apple's control. This is like a man telling his girlfriend that he would agree to breaking up with her, if and only if her new boyfriend meets his criteria.

    I've never understood Apple's hypocrisy on the difference of what is allowed on a Mac not being allowed on iOS. It is high time that governments clamped down on these tech giants. The EU also needs to start looking at ensuring that OS and iOS is available in every language that is used in every country and region and not only in the languages that Apple et al determine are valid. Even when they claim a language to be available it is often nothing more than a token half-baked attempt and is frequently patchy. Even this comment section of RUclips underlines words spelled in UK English to be 'wrong' despite the OS and RUclips language setting set to UK English. Japan also is looking at introducing legislation that will force Apple et al to allow third party apps. I think other countries will also follow. Governments should however, be careful of going too far in their legislation. Nevertheless, the tech giants have become overly arrogant and a bit of a pull down is necessary to strike the right balance between what is good about each tech company and what is good for the consumer.

      NO ONE is forcing you to sideload.
      And the only times when you get viruses from sideloading is when YOU, amateur incompetent user download it in suspicious adult apps or hacked / modified games (I am looking at all the Roblox kids).
      Also, from your point of view, you also must have Windows and MacOs too. Since sideloading IS a big part of these two operating systems.

      Then clearly you aren’t aware of what happens when a tech giant like Apple monopolizes an entire industry to the point of obscenity. You don’t see an issue now because we thankfully never got to that point but we were close with the battery management fiasco, right to repair litigation, loss of key apps like Dark Sky, and up until recently, all browser activity was done through Safari, regardless of the browser you utilized, it was still safari rendering nearly all traffic before it reached chrome/firefox/etc.
      You’re welcome to speak for yourself and your stance, but your opinion is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Ask yourself, are you happy with Microsoft being the only real option for productivity apps like Office, I’d wager your answer would be no.

    RIP iPhone 2007-2024. You will be missed⚰️🪦😭
    Thanks to a vocal minority in cohort with an extremely undemocratic ‘governmental body’, only 1 choice and 1 philosophy remains: the grimy, shady, malware infested illusion of ‘increased choice’ a la Android, is now forced upon those who purposefully choose a ‘closed’ system philosophy by *THEMSELVES*
    16.7.2 / 17.3 will be the last version(s) on all my devices for an extremely long time; after that, it will be non-EU imported devices. I will not accept any underlying code that make possible running these changes to go into effect😡 #notmyEU ❌

      Stop crying, I don’t get ppl like you.
      If you don’t like using 3rd party software, anything outside of App Store, you’re not forced to do so.
      You still have a option to stay 100% Apple and just don’t use 3rd party app stores.
      Nothing malicious will find it’s way to Apple’s app store so just chill

      I sure hope you don't use a Mac because that's even more open than these new rules. If you do it must be grimy and malware infested

      truly sheeple moment right there. Booohooo Apple have to open more. Cry more. It's an OPTIONAL feature for gods sake. If you don't like it, don't use it. Nothing changes for you.

      @@kennybruhbruhyeah, but less technology savy users might download something of these shady stores, that’s the point. I am already dreading my mom getting some malware infested app from some shady-ass unregulated store…
