And yet... *_even on Android,_* the ability to sideload apps can be disabled... *_by the carrier._* Yup, few years ago I tried to install the Amazon Flex app (which is sideloading-only for some reason and not available on Google Play), only to get a "Your carrier (AT&T) has disabled sideloading on this device" error (I own the phone outright, bought it off Amazon and merely swapped an AT&T sim card into it, plain old unlocked Pixel 5 new in box).

    1. Denial:
There is no reason this feature would ever be necessary
    2. Anger:
We can't add that feature, that is unfair!
    3. Bargaining:
Please, adding that feature would be so bad for (obviously bullshit reason used to disguise the actual greed motivating us)
    4. Depression:
Because we had to add this feature, we can no longer abuse unfair uncompetetive tactics to abuse our market position:

Hey, look how cool we are for freely, of our own volition, out of the goodness of our heart adding this feature that we had no good reason to deny you for so long.

Let’s not forget when Facebook used something like MDM (against terms) to tell its users to get a new app, which also allows them to collect vastly more data. MDM (mobile device management) is for schools and businesses to nearly completely control the device.
So people will get tricked, but that’s something that needs to be worked on. Tech literacy genuinely needs to be taught. And understanding what a brand/service/whatever can do to manipulate you.
That being said, I would love sideloading to come to iOS. The only way to do it now requires a refresh at least every 7 days or the app won’t open.

    • @kekchanbiggestfan
      @kekchanbiggestfan 7 месяцев назад

Yeah they PAID literal kids to enroll into their MDM so they could harvest their data and Apple basically had to revoke Facebook’s ability to distribute internal apps. I bet Facebook is absolutely salivating at the thought of getting to run their own app store.

They still seem to do it in a way that the managed distribution platform itself is still a walled garden. In other words, Apple has full control over alternative AppStores. You probably need to register your own AppStore using a developer account and then you can distribute apps without any interference of Apple, but Apple still can pull the plug on you. They seem to aim for the least possible variant that still complies EU regulations. So we will see what will happen.

Yep, this has in my opinion, nothing to do with sideloading. It's just about giving the OS native capability of managing devices from an enterprise account for corporates, which makes perfect sense. Notably, there has been a few alternative app stores on iOS devices for a while now (such as alt store and the likes) that allowed you to side load apps however they have never been permanent as they required an external pc to install and would only last a week or a month at most as they were classified as apps in development that had to be renewed after that time passed

Microsoft’s solution to this was to allow alternate stores/platform listings in the Windows 11 App Store. They did it to enable EA Play for PC game pass and the Amazon App Store for Android. I think you’re right Apple will limit this to European iPhones only.
Apple officially justifies the $99 developer fee by including 2 support tickets. So if you’re developing an app and need their help to get it running on your real hardware, they’ll actually answer your question and provide support. All of their developer account pricing is based on the number of support tickets, if you need more they charge $50-$100 for subsequent tickets.

    • @LordOtorai
      @LordOtorai 7 месяцев назад +1

You're spot on with the Microsoft example. It's like they looked at the app store playground and said, "Why not let everyone bring their own toys?" By integrating alternate stores like EA Play for the gaming crowd and the Amazon App Store for Android apps, they've basically thrown a party and invited everyone. This approach not only diversifies the types of apps available but also cleverly sidesteps the whole sideloading security concern by keeping everything under the familiar, safer umbrella of the Windows 11 App Store.
Now, bringing this back to Apple, you're probably right that they might roll out this sideloading feature exclusively for European iPhones at first. It's like dipping their toes in the water to test the temperature before jumping in. It makes sense from a strategic standpoint - they get to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act while also limiting the global impact on their tightly controlled ecosystem.
Regarding the developer fee, you've hit a crucial point. That $99 isn't just for the privilege of being in the App Store. It's like buying a ticket to a support hotline - you get two shots at asking Apple's wizards for help with your app. And if you're really stuck, you can buy more help for $50-$100 per issue. It's Apple's way of saying, "We're here to help, but remember, good advice isn't free."
This approach to developer support does make sense in a way. It's like a quality control filter - if you're serious about your app, you'll invest in the support. Plus, it likely prevents Apple's support team from being swamped with minor issues, allowing them to focus on genuinely complex problems.
All in all, whether it's Microsoft's inclusive party or Apple's cautious yet supportive approach, it's clear the app store world is evolving. It's no longer just about having the most apps, but also about how you support your developers and cater to your users' desires for variety and security. It's an exciting time to be an app aficionado, that's for sure!

I think EU needs 3 more laws,
    1. Devices should work with each other, My choices of Smartwatch should not depend on what phone I have, so consumers have choices and less eWaste, cause now if I have Android Phone and want Apple Watch, I have to STOP USING android and use iOS leading to eWaste.
    2. Companies will have to make FIRST PARTY apps for other OS as well. 3rd party developers can have choice if they want or not, but FIRST PARTY apps like TV+, Apple Music, Google Maps, Samsung Health, etc should work both on iOS and Android.
    3. Digital Ownership. EULA is just bad, companies can retrieve their digital products even after you "BUYING" them with no refund.
Digital ownership should be recognised for digital assets like Songs, Movies, Books, Games, etc
and if a company goes down like say STEAM is stopping. Then it should be responsibility of STEAM and game developers to make the product available on other stores like EPIC GAMES STORE and purchases will be transfered there.
edit: ownership also includes ability to rent/sell the game/media.

@@crazyabe4571 Mate I was just giving an example.
Say Amazon Prime Video or RUclips or Google Play Movies goes down, where you can Buy Movies they should make sure the purchases are transfered to other available stores.
I hate EpicGamesStore as well, I was just giving an example.
That ownership should be recognized, currently if you buy a game on Steam, but later the Publishers decides to remove it from STEAM (not DELIST, but complete removal) you cannot do anything about it neither can Steam. Cause currently you don't really BUY them, you BUY the licence to RENT IT FOR LIFETIME.
Same way recently Ubisoft decided to delist some DLCs of an AC game and even if you purchased it, they are gone.
So I was speaking of that.
If Steam has promised to take care of it's customers even if they go down, that is good.
I really like Steam and also believe they can promise such things cause they are a Private Company and not a Money Hungry Publicly Traded company.
But other companies like Google, Amazon, EpicGames, etc are and they need to be kept in check for all of these activities.

Android phones are still a long way from being truly open, but using an iPhone is crazy for me. Sideloading apps benefits users even if they won't use it: There have been countless times I've seen the only paid versions of programs available in appstore, while google store was full of official free versions of the same exact programs.
I used an iPad for like couple of weeks and sold it, cause it felt completely useless. I could not find even basic free RDP client at the time.

It is you who clearly don’t understand. They could give zero fucks about how customizable and open platform is, but it doesn't mean they want it that way specifically. Android is popular worldwide, it's a great daily driver for people who just wants phone and never heard about custom ROMs, recoveries and unlocked bootloaders. Do this people scream that they want less options? Less features?
Are some regular android users losing their mind because of the fact AOSP exists?
Or maybe iOS users complain a lot about their system becoming more and more customizable?

@@HKIHNDKNSI It's pretty bad. I didn't realize it the first few years but now it's so bad I can have a casual conversation with someone about a random topic I haven't searched for in many years and yet it suddenly shows up in advertising across multiple websites. I know with Android root access you can completely block all of that or just install a rom setup for security. I can't get away from iPhones because of iMessage. I wish there was a phone case that could block all of the sensors selectively. I would pay a lot of money for that.

I really hope phones become more like pcs, since Mac’s can run 3rd party apps, and windows and Linux allow you to edit local game files while android gets rid of the ability to view and edit the data of installed apps, like your plants vs zombies 2 save

3:31 Don't you also need to pay Apple a subscription for the dev software, and then pay them a subscription just to be allowed to have your app on the App Store in the first place? Basically means that free apps without ads or in-app purchases are literally not allowed on the App Store unless you're rich or own a big company and can afford to pay it without getting revenue from the app.
