Fraud by incompetence! This should be on a shirt or a bumper sticker! This is the problem with 90% of the shops I come across. Thank you for restoring my confidence in the potential for competence!
Just found you thru SMA. Eric O has good words. I wish I had your training and knowledge 40 years ago then I could have been a better tech. Diagnostics is about mind set and workflow. Learning new things keep me young so Mr O and now your site should keep me entertained and alive for years to come. 😁
Very interesting. Great job on coming up with a fix. Could you possibly draw a little schematic of how the diode and resistor get tied in and why the diode is necessary. I know you mentioned it but struggling to visualize the circuit and how it’s doing that.
i went to junkyard and got me one .when i find out it is reading lower psi than the gauge ..but you are correct the other shop that they send it to us they got there senor from Orielly .it did not work then they got it from Ford Dealership and it did not work .they send it to us to do deep diagnosis ...what i like on this Video is what you said at the beginning. You are not paying for time only .
I understand and appreciate your frustration. The practical application of circuit modification to correct a manufacturer's defect is genius, knowledge and skill. Well done sir.
Thank you so much L1, I have a 2007 Lincoln MKZ. Same story with me I paid a shop almost $1800 to fix my ac, I purchased a TopDon artidiag. Went to the live Data that you showed us, and sure enough the brand new motorcraft ac transducer switch was reading 1.0V with 0-6 psi. I found my original ac switch that was removed originally. I plugged it in and my AC was fixed!!. Thanks to you guys, bless you all!. It now reads 2.6V and 200psi, AC blowing ice cold non stop now. The shop replaced the ac compressor and switch. Thank you!! It’s the ac transducer switch!
The point about the wrong people being in the industry strings but it's probably true. The paradigm needs to change away from the dumb grease monkey. No one can make a living anymore just turning a wrench, and I'm not sure that's a bad thing.
I find your work interesting and I do watch SMA . I spent over 40 years in the electronics industry. 15 of those years for Motorola Canada as a bench tech. Other shops would replace a circuit board sent it to me and I would trouble shoot to the component, repair and send the board back for their spares.
It’s not always the tech. Normally it’s the environment they have to work in. If you’re a tech in an even moderately busy shop, there is no tolerance for anything more than a cursory diagnosis before you had better come up with a solution. It doesn’t matter how badass of a diagnostic genius you are in that situation.
"...there is no tolerance for anything more than a cursory diagnosis before you had better come up with a solution." Yeah, but if the cursory diagnosis is wrong, it ain't a solution, is it?
Going off on the alternator. Found out after 3 different tech put alternator on a 05 escape the aftermarket was using the model year older regulator issue with that year before was not computer driven the year I was working with was computer driven went to ford for the alternator before I went with an pcm (pcm was not receiving an input so was not sending out an output) to find out that an oem alternator from ford fixed out undercharging and. Over charging issue was ether not charger or 18 volt charging.
This is really good info. I've never seen this problem before, can't believe that you can't get pressure transducers for those cars that are correct. Might need to get a few OEMs from the picknpull
Safe to assume that this Motorcraft part number is used in quite a few other vehicles? If so, seems Ford has a potential problem on their hands with future AC repairs.
Static pressure does not indicate system charge. It is a function of the refrigerant's saturation point and the external temperature. RUclips won't let me post the URL, but I'm looking at a data capture right now on ScanShare, of a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe that has 20 psi of static pressure with a full system. Pretty sure you know why that is so. I've found that the best way to explain it is to start with "time" stopped and a system full of liquid refrigerant. There is ZERO pressure. Now start the clock (time) and explain how and why the pressure rises and then why it stops. Pressure sensors always linear? That has not been my observation. Training *power tip*... don't yell at your audience 🙂
Ford is getting good at this. Just like with their alternators for the older 500’s and such that had the wrong voltage regulators in them. I think it was Napa who was the only place we could consistently get an alternator with the proper regulator in it. 😂 Sometimes you just have to laugh at the incompetence in the Industry including the manufacturers. I just had a car in the shop from a local ford dealership that they sent over with trim panels loose everywhere claiming it had an electrical problem somewhere because the key fobs didn’t work unless in the pocket. They already tried a new key fob and said that wasn’t the problem. After checking it out and seeing that the antennas worked fine I called them with a part number for a key fob and told them to order it and after arguing with me for a bit that it wasn’t the issue they reluctantly did so. Programmed the CORRECT key fob to the car and when I told them it was fixed it’s amazing how fast they change tunes to being like awe shucks man that’s crazy. 😂 They bought the car from another dealer with the wrong fob and instead of looking up the vin and ordering another one they just grabbed a new one that was the same incorrect fob that came with it. The car didn’t have remote start and the key fobs were the wrong frequency. It’s frustrating when they bring you the car and then act like they doubt what you tell them. The lack of trained techs is a worldwide issue and all of the dealerships are suffering just as bad as the independents. It doesn’t help that they push them to flow charts and stuff either instead of teaching them an electrical foundation and how to think out problems critically. It sucks for the industry as a whole but it just increases the value for techs like us out there who’ve put in the effort to keep up with the ever changing technology and invest in the tools to get the job done no matter the hurdle. I’m constantly preaching to techs about taking advantage of all of the resources we have online these days to really learn and make themselves an asset that everybody wants hire. Anyone that’s willing to put in the work to learn can make themselves a six figure tech easily and bust a lot less knuckles in the process!

As a suggestion for future pressure sensor mods, it may be easier and more reliable to modify the Gnd connection to the sensor. By elevating the 0v(Gnd) wire of the sensor, your signal out will be proportionally higher. Potentially you can use a simple voltage divider circuit with 2 resistors in series (+5v and 0v on the ends, and the pressure sensor ground rewired to the center between the resistors). 👍

i like that resistance box, where did you get it keith ? . also i have a truck that dealer said needed the engine customer brough it to my shop but the noise was not the engine it was the catalytic converter, this confirms what you said even the dealers mess up really bad
But. The other shop had no way to know that there was a problem with the scaling. So you can't really scold him.He was right. The problem was sort of in the p.C.M
I recently bought a Cen-Tech automotive multi-meter/tach on clearance at "the dreaded" Harbor Freight for $42 and it works great! I also have one of the more expensive Zurich OBD II scanners from the Freight. Again, it works fine for me. My point is that, as you said, a high dollar scan tool isn't always necessary, especially for DIYers like me that... A) Can't afford one. And... B) And more importantly, don't have a clue how to use one lol! I mostly work on OBD I and OBD NONE stuff but, as time goes on, I'm being dragged (kicking and screaming!) into the OBD II world. I can still rebuild and tune a carburetor AND use a timing light though lol!
"They need to go away......" Yes. Si. 내. I try to be as humble as I can as I dont know everything and nowhere near the level of both "Keiths" (lol) or like Scanner Danner, but man, does it really tick me off dealing with arrogant stubborn mechanics that are so sure and you try to tell them they are wrong in the nicest way, only to be met with aggression. Too many good and competent technicians are getting pushed out for cheap labor mechanics because the owners think that's all that's needed. Not as skilled as you, but just as frustrated at work. 😆.
Whew! Double cappuccino..... Shot gunning energy drinks? Have pity on the ones not born with your smarts and drive. Just keep training them and take satisfaction in uplifting the people who truly are trying to be better Tech.
If I asked 10 home garage DIY mechanics and you asked them if they know what a 5 volt reference is I bet 9 would look at you like my dog wanting a treat. Most people still think that everything is "12" volt and have no clue that some magical box needs to see that special signal that everything in your car puts out or it maybe trips the "money light". You know how I can say this is that at one time I thought the same thing until I started learning WTF is going on. Does that mean I know WTF is wrong most of the time, yes because I can spend hours studying to fix the 3 cars we own a 2004 Dodge, 2013 Tahoe PPV and a 2016 Kia. When I took the KIA to the dealer and told them the high pressure fuel pump was bad and had the data to show them from my 100 scanner with a record function, they told me they have to replicate it. No problem, we go for a ride and I show them how to test for the problem with no tools but the water between their ears and they proceed to tell me putting the car in manual shift mode and flooring it to 6 grand and the high pressure turning off is the car trying to save itself. I show them the cars user's manual from the glove box and it states if you are in manual mode and you don't shift the car it will shift it to prevent damage. They said we need to do testing, and called me back with a 1900 estimate to fix the high pressure fuel pump, where 500 of that was them trying to figure out the problem. I told them to back it out and i wasn't paying shit. The service manager got all pissed and I told him this car was in here 2 years ago for the saome problem that I reported to the feds that didn't do shit about it because it would just decide to go into limp mode at the worst time and was a danger to anyone driving it. I told him if I pay the dealer I was going to file a suit against him, the dealer and KIA for gross negligence. He said your car is ready, no charge and don't ever come back I was banned from service at that KIA dealer. I took the car home, called up my parts place in St Louis and they sent me a known good for 200.00 including shipping and I installed the part in maybe 2 minutes and it has worked fine since, until it eats another high failure rate pump. Rant over, must be why one of the best KIA mechanics left the dealer and just works on them in his own shop now. He told them 🖕🖕🖕
Good one about the transducer. You had to know it, or at least notice something was wrong with the pressure reading. I also have non-working alternators for $69.95 😂 Thanks for sharing..
Thank you for your excellent presentation of the diagnostic process! What is the purpose of diode ? Is the transducer a pressure dependant resistor as part of a voltage divider circuit or is it a module with a variable voltage output? Many thanks and I very much look forward to discovering your other videos! Of I understood correctly, the new pressure transducer is
I agree with you. I’m a mobile tech snd i go to a lot of shops and 99% don’t know anything about electricity or electronics. But i make the money. Most people are ignorant and don’t wanna learn and improve their skills. Great video. See you on the next video 👍
I think one thing that fails to be brought up is the customers unwillingness to pay for diagnosis,”autozone does that for free, why should I pay” is a commen response when quoting diagnosis unfortunently,so then they go to the shop that doesn’t charge diagnosis and get what they pay for,end up back to you when it’s still not fixed and now have no money to diagnose or fix it, it’s an endless cycle I see where my shop is.
love the attitude the rant was fab great stuff man just found your channel ( bythe way Im in Wales the best part of the UK LOL/ you have been to the rest now you have come to the best in west Wales 😃😃🤣🤣😎😎😆😆
ooh i have 2 fusions a 10 and 11 , try turning on the fog lights then the ac and see if it works both of mine do it randomly where ac will blow hot, shut of the car turn on fog lamps then ac and it works, no clue why but both cars do it
The fact is we never get the full story and quite frankly I just want to know what the complaint is and can I duplicate it. That's where I start . Everything else is a red herring that I choose to ignore. It only serves to distract.
All you really need to do is get the Original FOMOCO part, it uses the correct transducer. Anything that talks to the PCM should be replaced with the Original OEM part and NOT a generic.
I did Noticed immediately the 0 psi , but your statement about trying a know good part first in this case , who wouldn’t have replaced the transducer then rechecked the Pid . Also in a busy Flat rate scenario ,makes it hard for the diagnostic Tech ,all management sees is $$$. Great info on this car (:
My question is if Motorcraft updated the part number to this sensor, why can't they update the pcm programming to compensate for it? That seems like the logical thing to do..
THE hardest part of diagnostics is remembering COMMON SENSE! (LOGIC) Sometimes it's so easy it "CAN'T " be that simple! "Diagnostics" ARE EASY as long as you KNOW what to look AT, what to look FOR, and exactly HOW its supposed to work.
at this point i'm starting to wonder if variable valve timing is worth all the trouble some manufactures are having? seems that reliability has taking a huge hit lately, seen toyota, ford and gm with timing issues with low miles on engines
Hello Keith - Stumbled across your rant and enjoyed it so much that i'm going to head over to L1 and sign up for some of your training to see what i can learn. Actually, its funny, i started encountering the same vehicle issues that you mentioned so much with friends and family, that i started fixing cars on the side here in NC when i have spare time; mainly electrical issues since i already have that background. Thinking of even starting my own business in a year or so as i head into semi-retirement. Thanks for the content.
100% AGREE on your rant. I'm a diag tech with a shop full of B techs trying to get them trained on diagnostics. most of the time they are guessing because they don't understand how it works.
It’s really frustrating isn’t it. I guess it really is more than just knowledge at some point. Cars have gotten complex enough to the average person these days that I think it just takes people with a certain mindset to really diagnose all of the issues we see nowadays effectively. Some of us just have the ability to look at it from a perspective that others can’t or won’t and I believe that it’s a major aspect of it that can’t really be taught. I think it was those of us that were building pc’s or tearing things apart as a kid to see how they work that are the ones rising to the challenge. Part of the problem is attracting the right the people into the industry. A lot of young men don’t know that there is a whole segment of the industry that’s not wrestling engines or transmission and busting knuckles/backs all day. That you can make a good living working on cars by using your brain more than your muscles and how rewarding it is. We still haven’t really shook that grease monkey stigma overall. We really need some kind of targeted outreach to young guys in high school and not really for automotive in general but for the automotive electrical field.
Sounds like since you know their “B” level tech and weak and you’re a master diagnostician as a shop owner it’s your job to diag… have them perform the repairs
As a dealer tech I can tell you, my service manager fucking HATES, when I take awhile with diag and double checking myself two or three times. But I personally want to know WHAT went wrong and why, before I ever sell something and if I’m not confident I don’t throw parts. My service manager just sells random shit without my recommendation. But also, there is no one to train these new techs to learn diag, other than learning it hands on. And being flat rate no one wants to do that.
Why would making money off other peoples mistakes be frustrating. Most technicians will not evolve with todays diagnostics. Why would that ever make you upset. The more they do not change the more customers you will have. So what if it is the shop as your customer. Our job is to repair vehicles. Customer Service no matter who the customer is , i.e. shop or a regular persons. The fact that there are many bad technicians today and shops that will not move with the times should make you happy. Means guys like us who are advancing will always have work and a place in this world. Chill out on the useless rants. You make these videos to help techs that do want to learn and change with the times. Not your place to rant on your personal opinion. You repair cars because you love it. Leave it at that. Forget the other shit. Negative rants like this just leave negative thoughts in peoples head. Which is the opposite of what you want coming to your channel.
Its not the fix I expect them to know how to do, its identifying it DIDN'T need those other parts.... the THOUSANDS the customer spent for NO REASON! THE PCM THEY SENT IT TO US FOR. THAT IT DIDN'T NEED.
First thought is at least their ignorance makes you money. I guess you are mad because they are charging the customer for parts they didn't need? Hopefully they aren't. I like to think most shops would take the hit as opposed to straight up lying.
It's not mutually exclusive, the tech wss clueless, it obvious based on all different parts put on the car and what they asked of me. But, yes, the parts catalonge is wrong as well.
Speaking as a retired electronics engineer. Never, have I seen someone go on an extended rant ... in totally the wrong direction. Technicians work on cars, Engineers design them. As you said, you and all your people did not know how to repair this problem the first few times. Even with all your Technician knowledge, you did not know what to do when you were given the Ford OEM part and it did not work as expected. Technicians don't design sensors, nor should they have to. Technicians do just as a Doctor does, they follow the words " USE AS DIRECTED ". If a drug is put in the wrong package by the Drug manufacturer, Doctors wonder why it does not work as expected, but they do not start there own 3 year long drug trial. They move on to the next possibility. The OEM part did not work as advertised ... they moved on to the next possibility ( as you did). Technicians do not have the time to a redesign a car. Clearly you owe an apology to the Techs out there. The fault was not the Technicians... it was Ford's. You should have posted this video as (WATCH OUT- FORD FUSION A/C ISSUE). I hope this rant was only because of something you drank.
You missed the point, the thousands spent on the AC parts were unfounded, im not made because they couldn't fix it. I'm mad they put tons of parts on the car it didn't need and charged the customer for it.

You always need to try 3 pcm’s before you know it’s not the pcm.
"I can't believe we got two bad PCMs in a row. The third one will fix it for sure."
Haha!
Funny story, I had a Jeep the 3rd pcm fixed the problem. The PCM rebuilder was arguing with me it was fine. Well, it wasn't. 😂
I immediately noticed the 0 psi on the scanner, but I had no idea of the issue with the sensors. Great information as always Keith.
The shop did not, otherwise it would have been understood as a input problem.

They threw away the old pressure sensor simply because a new one came in the kit - most old parts better than new😂

sounds like ford needs to offer an a software update to correct the scaling of the aftermarket /replacement sensor
Car is out of warranty. A software update requires resubmitting a new calibration to EPA on all models affected. They aren't wasting money on that.

He told them 🖕🖕🖕
You still might hurt yourself if you jump and the chute doesn't open. lol
Of I understood correctly, the new pressure transducer is
The diode makes sure voltage is bled over to only the sensor, and not the entire 5v line is drug down.
well said! not payin for my time paying for my knowledge!!!! so true!! 300
bucks for a diag is cheaper then a unessecary pcm!!!
I agree with you. I’m a mobile tech snd i go to a lot of shops and 99% don’t know anything about electricity or electronics. But i make the money. Most people are ignorant and don’t wanna learn and improve their skills. Great video. See you on the next video 👍
I think one thing that fails to be brought up is the customers unwillingness to pay for diagnosis,”autozone does that for free, why should I pay” is a commen response when quoting diagnosis unfortunently,so then they go to the shop that doesn’t charge diagnosis and get what they pay for,end up back to you when it’s still not fixed and now have no money to diagnose or fix it, it’s an endless cycle I see where my shop is.
love the attitude the rant was fab great stuff man just found your channel ( bythe way Im in Wales the best part of the UK LOL/ you have been to the rest now you have come to the best in west Wales 😃😃🤣🤣😎😎😆😆
ooh i have 2 fusions a 10 and 11 , try turning on the fog lights then the ac and see if it works both of mine do it randomly where ac will blow hot, shut of the car turn on fog lamps then ac and it works, no clue why but both cars do it
Weird.
We tried 2 from the dealer, we have confirmed the parts are superseded to the incorrect unit. A used unit or new old stock would have fixed it.
Then every car that got an update for anything later would also need a transducer, I would rather them fix the supply chain.
I hear you! My part of the world is parts changers. Please help use all. WTF.
THE hardest part of diagnostics is remembering COMMON SENSE!
(LOGIC)
Sometimes it's so easy it "CAN'T " be that simple!
They needed to go to Wilbert's pick and pull, not a sponsor and get a used maybe good part😂😂.
Hey Keith, may I ask if you can send a picture of the wire loom you made with the size of the resister and diot
Like scanner danner says it may be 1000 module are you sure its the module and do you even know if its a pull up or pull down circuit
So where did you actually find the correct transducer?
Truth is hard to hear. I feel you i spent half my time fixing someones elses mess.
So strange 1V=0 PSI .thank you FORD
stop drinking cough medicine
But it taste good.
Path to diagnostic , function ,condition and .operation .
You rant about having to much work . Most of the stuff you rant is also true
Great video, great information. Appreciate everything you do for our industry
So days of twisted wires and hammer over :) 🔌
He's saying all replacement pressure transducers sold by Ford for this car wont work. That's a pretty big accusation.
Of the 7 dealers ones we have tried so far, yes.
Someone needs some coffee. Lol. Kidding great video.
Thanks For having the right ability to rant😅
Just finished watching an SMA video. Eric mentioned you but didn't say how funny it would be here Lmao
The Stealerships around where I live are bad....really bad
Just don't be too harsh on car techs.
Nahhh.
The last 4 minutes of this video alone earns it the thumbs up.
Toolboxs have wheels....
Because they ripped the customer off.
How is this the tech's fault? How many techs would've been able to do this hack?...
Its not the fix I expect them to know how to do, its identifying it DIDN'T need those other parts.... the THOUSANDS the customer spent for NO REASON! THE PCM THEY SENT IT TO US FOR. THAT IT DIDN'T NEED.
Where do you get the correct transducer?
First thought is at least their ignorance makes you money. I guess you are mad because they are charging the customer for parts they didn't need? Hopefully they aren't. I like to think most shops would take the hit as opposed to straight up lying.
That is 100% my frustration.
Bro it needs a PCM I promise!!
15 cars a day, 6 days a week?.. seriously? How many techs do you have working there?
It only takes 2 techs to easily diagnose 15 cars a day. We have a process, and it works.
Awesome
you accuse the tech that worked on it of not knowing what they are doing, but then talk about how the manufacturer screwed up their parts catalog..
Spoken like a guy who hasn’t paid a $3000 bill for repairs that didn’t fix his vehicle! Don’t defend the problem in this industry man!
