Ford F250: Stalls Out & Sometimes Restarts?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 мар 2023
- In this video I have a look at a customers 2011 F-250 that was diagnosed at another shop for having a bad fuse box. Customer wanted me to take a look and be sure before changing any parts and see what it really needed. I was sick back in February when I made this video. Hopefully it doesn't seem to scatter brained to you.
-Enjoy!

Ughhh it sucks being sick but this was about a month ago back in Feb. This job takes a little bit of a turn about a month later so stand by.... 😏
-Eric O.
Get well!
Stop hugging on them girls, they got kooties...
Cool! A cliff hanger...
I would've replaced the relay straight away, instead of all that fiddle fartin' around. 😉
Great Vid! Get well Eric!
No such thing as a sick day when you own your own business. Thanks Eric!
Oh there are. More so since COVID became such a problem. I don't miss working with guys with kids that bring home illness frequently from schools.
Eric, this is the reason we all watch your videos! Even not feeling good you always work the problem, not allowing the problem to work you! Thanks you and your great Family for letting us see your wisdom!
The man is a blast to watch. Like hands on training
Couldn't agree more
On those coils you get a brake in the wire to on inside the coil and it will work when got but cold open and close and wires will touch intermittent
Nice to see a good tech actually diagnosing and not throwing parts at a vehicle until something sticks. Fantastic video.
Damn thieving dealerships have the worst so called “technicians?” that just throw parts at it BECAUSE they get commission while the dealership rapes the customer. SOP for them. I’ve seen the proof on different family members that are dumb enough to go to a “ stealership “. I wished Eric lived in my town
Swap relays until it works! Then doesn't. 🙃
full troubleshooting takes time=money. It's always nice to know but in reality all that matters is it was fixed?
I hate swapping sh*t around. May work on the side of the road, but. Just moving the problem somewhere else. Stranded again. 🙄
@@daveyt4802 label the parts, then swap to get home for repairs. even if you have to scratch things in with pocket knife or whatever.
As a Ford tech who specializes in electrical and networking, words cannot describe how much love and respect I have for Eric. He ain’t afraid of testing rather than guessing and getting a vehicle repaired properly. Can’t wait for him to encounter a newer super duty with so many “non-serviceable” relays inside of the BJB. Cheers from Florida, Eric!
i've been out of the field for about 13 years now, in my experience ford has a pretty bad record with electrical problems, ignition switch & cruise control fires, and should i mention the Mercury mistake & ford conturd wiring harnesses,..
i've got to ask about these “non-serviceable” relays. did ford make them an integral part of the box? if so, its more poor design from them.
ford engineer, "hey!, lets make the brake light switch harness move every time you push the brake petal"
NO ONE should be second guessing the Great Eric O! You are the epitome of a professional and diligent mechanic. Everyone could be learning from you!
It's too bad these people stop with the middle man and come to Eric O right off the bat?
@@larrybe2900 the middleman's diagnosis was more correct than Eric's. How do you figure? I mean technically the wire leading to the junction box was bad just before the relay but at least that would've been repaired if the fusebox were replaced.
You are a real mechanic, you actually identify the real problem, which is good for the customer because you save them a ton of money! I learn something from you every video!
Your diagnosis skills are great, if only other shops worked like you do.
My local is just like Eric. NO BS and it works. 👍
He's not the only one that can properly diagnose...not rocket science...
You're forgetting he's got a successful utube channel to feed too.
@@dopeman420 you are correct, I should have said all shops because I have been screwed over by the dealership in my area for replacing parts without fixing the problem.
Gotta love computers in cars and trucks. One thing goes down and nothing works. Miss the good ol days of classic cars no matter what they always worked
YES a 30+ minute video. Sweet. The longer the better😁
We need to clone this guy and place him in every auto shop. Good job Eric O.
Get that lady with the SUV who punched a hole in the fuse box cover. See that relay smarten the hell up right quick time. Put the fear of lawd jebus in it. Nice work again Mr O, saved that guy a bundle avoiding replacing whole fuse box.
Stay gold.
That is what I was doing Friday. Searching before doing any actual repairs as messing with parts can make the problem go away.
Monday I plan to connect the computer and start actual repairs.
As a customer, not a professional mechanic, I appreciate when the mechanic goes through the diagnostic process to try to understand why things aren't working than just to start replacing things. Interesting video as usual, thanks Eric.
It is 1:00 AM in the morning and I am still watching.
Even when sick with "half of a brain" Mr O is still smarter than those other mechanics (and the rest of us).
Other shop uses the Green Acres philosophy, hit what does not work, hit it with a hammer. Eric O finessed it to find problem. Great work.
It’s a True Miracle that a 2011 is Not Shredded by now in the Rust and Salt Belt of New York. You’re Not afraid of Anything Except Mrs. O. of course. 🤔😬👍
"diagnose it first to see what's really wrong" 😂The life of an honest shop
I can't tell you how many times I wish you were local to my location, I'd probably invent problems with my vehicle just to have you work on them..lol....love what you do buddy
Eric O: We need to know "Are we losing control?" Amen, Brother O! Get well soon.
Not only a master mechanic but a master auto electrician. Kudos Mr. O. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You have the patience of Jobe, even when you are sick....
Even sick and pissy you're still nailing it.
Being sick makes it hard. Eric O is working with "half a brain" and still did a great, logical, cause/effect diagnosis. Reminds me of the late, great Rush Limbaugh, who used to say he did his radio show with "half his brain tied behind his back just to make it fair..." Good job Eric. I can't wait to see the follow-up on this job.
great diagnosis lucky customer to have you do their work
Love the super technical relay sound effects, that's the exact sound I hear in my head when thinking how a relay works
I've been following you for about 3 years, Eric. You do VERY IMPRESSIVE work. You're a freakin' genious...
If I had an automotive problem I couldn't solve locally, especially something involving electronics, I SWEAR I'd somehow get my problem to you KNOWING you could git-R- done...
(I'm in NC- LOL)
Nice to see you are from NC! I used to work in Raleigh!! Now in AZ.
All I need to say is get well my friend. Working and feeling like crapp sure makes it a tougher job.but you hung in there and still provided a great video. Thank you Eric!!
Finally someone exposed the hypocrisy, obviously why shim transitioned because shim knew it would be to hard to win against other men. Same with Griner, also not a woman competing against women in basketball.
Thanks for playing through the pain, Mr. O. Nice work. Cheers!
One of the perks of owning your own business is working sick. 🤧
So if they replaced the fuse box the cost would be very expensive, I like the way you diaged this saved the customer a lot of money. Way to go.
Some of those fuse boxes are reasonably priced. No clue on that though. I have been in a few and I believe it involves a wiring harness with no good way to disconnect the box.
Eric, your like the mail guy, Neither sick nor snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of vehicles, you prevail.
Diagnosis while ill is not easy! Great work as always. Hope you are feeling better.
As a componant level trouble shooting electronics tech for 30yrs. Your better than most kids coming out with an AAS because u got experience. Id let u trouble shoot a board any day because u can read a schmatic ! Much love from down east.
Better than all!
You have the patience of Job, brother. When you are sick and self employed, there is no such thing as a paid day off.
I kind of like it when you're a little bit pissy. 😅 Great video as always, and hope you get better soon!
Hey, what you did makes sense. I'd rather know than guess and throw parts at it. Your approach to repairs is always good. Don't ever worry about the comments where the armchair mechanics can fix anything from where they sit. Hope you feel better and keep up the good work.
Yeah, the other garage would of R&R the entire fuse knowing it would come with all new fuses and breakers so the problem would be fixed, maybe, bought at what cost? Eric, You are the MAN! Keep it up showing how to really fix cars the right way!
It's like watching a master class in electrical
There is only one shop in my three county area which specializes in automotive wiring and electrical, the parking lot is always full of Ford F Series trucks and E series vans. I had to have them diagnose and repair my last F150. They do so many, that they make their own splice-in harnesses. Most other shops won't touch Ford electrical issues, which is very inconvenient. Dealership service departments answer to every problem "It needs a new wiring harness." Your customers are very lucky to have you Eric!
Nothing worse than an I touched it fix, great logic for the repair and the cause, very frustrating when they just start working, more so when your sick.
Thanks Eric. This is the best kind of diagnostic video. You should keep away from your children and stop talking to the public. It's the best way to stop those germs gettin' ya!
🙂
Diagnostic mallets are the way to go
Nothing I hate worse is chasing a friggin electrical problem but you my man are a genius! Awesome job!
man eric you are like the gene krantz for apollo 13 "lets work the problem people" you just saved that customer a butt load of money by actually diaging not guessing
You are much better sick than others on their best day
Contacts on the relay were shotty. When you caused it to spudder or click really fast by pulling it out, it cleaned the contacts by doing so.
Eric , whoever is criticizing you needs to watch another mechanic. Your troubleshooting approach is methodical not just random and all over the place that's why you are so good at what you do!!
I had one just like this a few weeks ago.. Turned out that the contact in the box to the relay was struggling. Tightened the bite and it has worked flawlessly since.
I was going to say go home and get some rest. Then I read the post was a month ago. So thanks for your time when you were sick. ✝️🙏👍😉🤗
I had a 99 Chev truck and the relay to the compressor clutch stayed engaged running my battery down. I removed the relay cover and a small piece of solder had gotten between the contacts. Thanks, Eric for your videos.
Being exposed to this mastery is a benefit to everyone that sees it. Thanks ... again and as always Eric.
You understand the value of proper troubleshooting and you learn from it and can apply it to the next customer. Those that make comments about you shoulda done this blah, blah do not understand proper troubleshooting procedure. If we do not determine exactly why something did what it did and prove what actually happened we learn nothing and simply get lucky and hope for the best next time. That’s a stressful life and knowledge allows for more confidence which allows for less stress. Good job as usual…
Hi Eric, after watching you for a few yrs. now I would not second guess you. There is nothing more frustrating than something fixing itself and haunting you and your customer looses faith in you. Good job buddy! GET WELL SOON!!!
Eric and Ivan from Pine Hollow are like auto diag Gods to me
My favorite part was when you did the autopsy on that relay. I used to put a very low amp fuse in parallel across the suspect component (very intermittent problem). If the fuse was blown that was evidence of the questionable component going open. Christ, Eric when I ran the shop I would have killed for a tech like you.
Was getting used to the simple processes related to the Deere excavator servicing. Reinforces the theory that life can be simple @ times, even if not often .🇺🇸🗽🛐 Hoping for a speedy recovery from "feeling like crap" syndrome. Remember, things can always be worse, could be the object of the manhattan DA witch hunt
PRNY @ large.
We all appreciate these videos on your "methods" of troubleshooting!! I will tell you that from watching YOUR videos for years now, I have slowed down a bit on troubleshooting "issues"....The fastest answer is not always the right one.....follow the problem from start to finish....
even when mr o feels like dog poop he still takes his time to show us the right approach. got to love that.
Feeling bad but still post a video that's dedication, much appreciated.
Thanks for tricking us Eric. Keeps us on our toes 🫡
"I can do it. You can do it. Yadda yadda, I'm going to go lay down." haha good stuff Mr. O!
So having now watched the latest video repair for this vehicle from you Eric we get to learn that a broken wire under the fuse box on the control side of the module was the ultimate culprit. You isolated the control side of the module first but I believe the broken wire to the module still had a partial connection and it’s likely thermal conductivity caused it to loose power resulting in intermittent stall conditions. Thanks from all of us in RUclips land for your Diagnostic Master Class!
Its good that you troubleshoot first , to find the problem !
Ive delt with a lot of relays in my career as a maintenance technician and found that the points develop pitting that will cause an intermittent condition .
Kind of drives you crazy !!
I change the relay first !!
This guy is a saint. Making videos for the people even when he’s sick. Thanks Eric.
“And negatory on the cost of this mow-chine there Red Ryder
You might say I went right up to the factory
And picked it up, it's cheaper that way
Uh, what model is it?”
Mr o I was a tech at Ford 17 yrs now im at caterpillar cause I got tired of the bs your ability to test and diagnose problems is 2nd to none but I thought I would share a tip I learned from a electronics guys from the military if you got a relay you suspect is bad when it's doing its thing and not working stick a large magnet on top the relay if problem goes away its relay for sure that trick had helped me threw a few diags the magnet will close the relay still need to verify the control wire if its good relay for sure 100%
Well the truck starts surprisingly well when it does start, that's a shocker in of itself
Nothing a Z pack won't fix and couple of shots of doctor McGillicuddy's And the problem you found with the relay, Great job as usual.
Wish the like button counted as 2 when youtubers make a vid when sick-they deserve it!
Hope you feel better soon, and that it’s just a cold. Working when you’re sick is not fun.
Intermittent failures.... Yuck.
Thumbs up for thorough troubleshooting Eric (as per usual)!
Your approach is Electronical logic, that is good and the correct diag which always leads to a resolve!
Welcome back to South Main Auto Diagnostics! 😉
You always say these are your boring videos.
I disagree: these are the videos that not only prove how complex modern vehicles are but also how valuable a great mechanic like yourself is. Some of the equipment you use is relatively expensive. As a diy guy, I know my way around a vehicle but electrical issues are always tricky.
Awesome video! Stay blessed, man.
one piece at a time is one of my favorite song of his, i hope you feel better soon
Another episode of scanner tool fun with Eric
Sorry you are feeling poorly there young man. Never apologize for doing what you were trained to do and continue to train us to do. Diagnose the issue, verify the fault, once identified then check one more time. Great video as always hope you on the mend soon.
The relay is 182 years old. A 12 volt direct current will propagate 4 miles before fading to nothing. To send the first long-distance, telegraph message, in 1844, Samuel F. B. Morse used 13 independent circuits along the 38 mile route between Baltimore and Washington D.C. Along the route, every three miles there was place a fully charged battery. A relay, identical to the one Eric replaced, was used such that the incoming signal, now much weakened, was on the "control" side. The relay activated the next circuit through the "power" side battery. Thus relaying the message the entire distance.
When I had my shop, my wife got me a chart of "Murphy's law" that I hung up on the wall.
Intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose, and are covered by this law of Murphy's........ any appliance (or car, truck, piece of equipment, tv, etc.) when demonstrated for the repairman, will work Perfectly every time"
Excellent diagnosis Eric. You make it look like child’s play. As others have stated you find what’s defective and also find out the “why”.
That’s the most important info I get from your videos. Good job.
I'm banging on this fusebox full of wires, relays, fuses and connections. Gotta replace the whole thing. Solid diagnosis. :D
Totally agree with you because your approach lets you learn diagnostics as you move forward.
"so I think what I would do if it were me".........er, actually Eric, it is you. And I feel sure the first thing the 'other shop' would have done was swap relays (there are often more than one of the same part number), of they tried a new one as that is the easiest thing. So using the brain is always a good learning curve for all the rest of us mortals. Cannot wait for the update.
Ivan would have cleaned the relay contacts! 🤣
NPR!
I like the way you systematically go about finding the problem
I just hope some of the shops I deal with daily see you using a real test light and follow suit.
Thanks.
The master as usual, you might have heard the relay click if it is was the control side. If not it is probably the contacts or the lower terminal. Teaching grandfather to suck eggs of course. but you know. You are just mind blowing, I am learning all the time from you and I have been doing electrics for 40 years. Ivan just had one with a bad solder joint on the board and just soldered a ground to the relay directly. Russian no parts required. LOL
Sorry to hear you were sick. I seem to lose my mind when I am ill. I was surprised how well you did with the video.
was fun watching the master at work
It was probably to much work to replace the fuse box, but it was good they sent it to you to get the real problem fixed. I'm sure the customer will be a lot happier paying for a proper diagnosis with just the relay replaced then having the fuse box replaced.
Nothing to do with this video but the vice grip trick on the mini tire changer worked great. It was a time and lifesaver. Thanks.
Ideal candidate for replacement with a solid state device .
In my dealings with fords this sounds like it is the mystery can! Don't worry too much eventually it will just start working! Chicken soup !!!Hope you feel better soon Eric O.
Praying you feel better Eric.
Awesome in depth diagnostic video, great job. The other shop should have kicked the bumper, it flickers and said you need a new truck, lol.
Somehow I lost my subscription, remembered it when rainmanray mentioned you and finally subscribed again.
Yea Mr. O I liked your approach to this and I'm happy with sending him with a relay.
Good job bud ❤
LOVE THAT WRENCH WIZARD! GOOD JOB MR O
Super trouble shooting. Your way, you use collecting data, review data and formulate The Plan. Other shops follow a flow chart others have put together. Thanks for sharing this process and allowing us to look over your shoulder. Super tech on the job!
