  • Essentially abandoned for 20 years this 1984 Harley Davidson FLT Tour Glide Classic project bike gets a carb rebuild and some fresh fuel to see if and how it runs. Long term plans are to go through the entire bike but it’s important to know what works and what doesn’t… this is the first steps

    Evolution might be Harley's best motor ever. Huge aftermarket support as well.

    I picked up an 84 Lowrider with 5000 miles for a grand, perfect stocker but all kinds of electrical problems. Makes me love my 49 Pan more!

    You’re knocking out the old myth that Harley’s don’t last long, yeah you got a little work get her ready for some heavy road riding, but shoot you got her crank and moving and 20 years 🤙🏽

    The early EVOs were bottom breathers. So those washers, that fill the space between the heads and the carburetor backplate, take the place of the banjo bolts in later EVOs (head-breathers). Are you sure it's an '84? There were very few models in 1984 that came with an EVO motor, my FXST is one model, but to my knowledge all the early electric start EVOs had the starter solenoid parallel to the primary as opposed to this bike with the solenoid next to, and perpendicular to, the primary...

      @Rif_Leman 2 месяца назад +2

      This bike is an early 5 speed model. The perpendicular solenoid models were 4 speed.

      Yeah it’s an early ‘84, the person I got it from was the original owner and rode it till 2004, it sat partially outside from then till less than a month ago when I got it.
      Makes sense in the backplate now that you said it and I compared to my ‘96 Fatboy (head breather). Wonder if it’s worth converting to a head breather on this when I do the top end? 🤔

      @@tta850 I got the screaming eagle breather kit for my '94, the line attaches to the head pcv port then gives you a hose barb. Then, ran a hose back past the rear axle and put one of those plastic chrome breather/filters instead. So I think head breather is the way to go, since your heads do not have the ports.
      When I installed the tube, the banjo bolts just wrung right off. A friend's dad had a lathe in the basement, they won't wring off now. Also, those hose cheesy formed hoses would basically melt from the oil after a while. Life is better without.

      @@tta850 Early '84 Evo bikes have basket type clutches and late '84 Evo have diaphragm clutches.

      @@tta850: I see a lot of folks, with head breathers, complaining about the oil dripping out of their air cleaners and there are lots of products out there to 'catch' that oil so, unless your planning on replacing your heads, I'd leave it alone! My Softail came with a 'dry' primary. The crankcase vented through the primary, whatever oil came through misted over the primary chain, and was sucked back through the oil pump(?) and was vented through the backplate of the OEM air cleaner. When I converted to a wet primary, I just vented the crankcase through a filter bolted to one of the trapdoor studs. After sitting all winter, I get a 50 cent piece size puddle of oil under the filter on initial startup but, from then on, nothing.

    I like that way of attaching the carb over the more modern versions, I'm not impressed with my '98 carb being held in place with a piece of rubber!

      Yeah I like the S&S style intake too, really makes you wonder why Harley didn’t do something like that too 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I'm a new sub and really enjoy watching. Question for you, do you think it would be pretty impossible for someone who has never worked on cars or bikes to rebuild a carb? You have me wanting to get back into riding and start doing my own maintenance.

    • @tta850
      @tta850  Месяц назад +1

      Impossible no! Also not the easiest thing to do, but there is so much access to information especially if you pick a common or popular model that has a lot of parts available 👍🏻

  • @BAsed_AFro

    Sounds pretty solid!
    Next time, just get a water bottle full of gas w hose straight to carb so you ca bypass that nasty old gas tank. Otherwise all the crud in it will for sure clog the carb (and your new petcock) quickly.

    • @tta850
      @tta850  2 месяца назад +2

      Yeah it’s running and riding surprisingly well, I thought about that but wanted to ride it and the inside of the tank is decently clean, I put a clear fuel filter in line to keep an eye on it and not much if anything is coming out.
      That said I’m definitely changing the tank in the long run 👍🏻

      I guess I’m just used to the tight confines 😆 🤦🏻‍♂️ there is a little less than two feet on the drivers side of the car to get in / out but only if I hug the wall real tight on the passenger side.

    Doesn't the screen on the petcock work as a filter?

    • @tta850
      @tta850  2 месяца назад

      It does and the petcock is new, but it’s not that fine a screen, so I’ve added a secondary one that has a clear housing so I can see what the fuel coming out of the tank looks like

      @@tta850 I bought my '84 in '88 from the original dealer. I asked them to get me a service manual and they got me a '85 to '89 FX/Softail manual - and said there's not much difference between the '84 and '85... There's a SUBSTANTIAL difference! LoL! Mine is basically an old Shovelhead FXWG with a fancy swing-arm, different oil bag, and EVO motor! I finally found the 'right' service manual: FL/FX Models 1200/1340cc 4-speed 1978 1/2 to 1984.
