I would almost say the glory days of Harley Davidson are actually now, being that in 1980 Harley Davidson almost went out if business, and it was the 1985 introduction of the Evolution block head motor that saved them. Even in the 1990s it was almost impossible to buy a new H-D being that demand exceeded supply, and everyone had to either buy used, or get on a waiting list, or buy a UJM or (Universal Japanese Motorcycle). Too bad HD couldn't figure out how to put more belt tension on the primary belt. That drove them to design the garbage "Cowpie" transmission as a result.
My first new Harley was an 88 FXRS. I loved it but didn't realize at the time just how great it was. Sold it and bought an 89 Softail Custom. One of the only bikes I regret selling.
