Great video! I don’t know the stats, but I’m going to take a guess and say that there isn’t a market for this stuff. I agree with you.. so many people complain about this shit but then go and buy like 3 copies because of speculation… collecting really is ruining the industry. When will it be about story again.

Great discussion! Not a fan of this content in comics and I really think like you said, DC is making these books for a non existent audience. DC is totally trying to exploit the collectors market. In the 90s it was foil covers and variants, today it’s lgbtq characters driving speculation

Great video. Interesting points of views and perspectives. I'm female, in my late 30's and part of lgbti community. But I personally , can't say that not including lgbti in comic books affects me in any way. Yes we appreciate the inclusivity. But it's really not that deep. Just my opinion. It's okay, to not include the bisexuality. I also don't know if there's a market.

Loving the new setup Dante! As always an excellent discussion. While acceptance is the obvious way for any modern culture to move forward, forced representation should never be in the way of but serve good storytelling. Granted, the comicbook market has always been exploited by contraversial products to sell books. Nothing new here. EDIT: I agree 100% that this tactic is very tone deaf. Same happened with Star Wars The High Republic to some extent. It's not a major distraction but it is grating when you realize the intentions behind it.

    • @Dante19883

Hey Ben, I totally agree! It’s happening in both comics and Star Wars and well said about High Republic! I actually stopped reading rising storm about 3/4 through. The only thing I find interesting in high republic right now is Elzar Mann and Avar Kriss and there isn’t enough of Elzar in Rising storm and Avar is just mentioned (at least in what I read). Stellan Gios is boorriinngg, I found the same with Bell Zettifar and the forced tone deaf tokenism was taken to a new level in that book. I think I’m now attributing my liking Light of the Jedi to Charles Soule since I think he is a great writer and I have never disliked anything he wrote lol

It’s amazing how people always say, “I’m not a bigot,” then immediately say something from a bigoted biased perspective. I’ve had many people say “why can’t lgbt people just keep it in their private bedroom,” yet would never give it a second thought about a man and his girlfriend/wife kissing in public.
I would bet you have never said, “I cannot understand the rationale of showing these superhero’s with their girlfriends. I cannot understand adding these aspects in is must for the sake of it.”
I mean, be honest, if he was straight and kissing his girlfriend on the cover, you wouldn’t be saying anything.

Hey all, thanks for commenting. I think the point here is know the market you’re creating content for. I think there are readers on both side of the spectrum: some that are actual bigots and some that are not. The thing that the comic book audience has in common is that most of the people reading comics are straight men. Personally I don’t care if two men or women are kissing on screen or in a comic. But I know there are many people who just don’t care to see it and who are tired of being inundated with this content no one is asking for. There’s no right or wrong answer though really.

Like myself, my friends in the LGBTQ community aren't fans of stories that force representation in new comics and media in general ( ugh...theres so much...even Netflix Shera/ Revelations Heman) . If it happens naturally, that's fine! Its part of the story and the journey ( in this case, Kents son, Superboy). But if you force it, like for example, Iceman, because you beed a quota of representation, we're gonna know that's crap!

The problem today with the world is that there is too much political correctivenes. There are people who want you to think differently about certain topics and to look at these topics in a different light. Not everyone may agree with looking at things in a different light and they shouldn't have to be made to. You want to take a character and change the dynamics of that character then so be it. But you can't jam it down someone's throat and think they will accept and go along with it. Social issues are taking up too much conversation and getting to involved in politics also. Everyone needs to take a step back and worry about themselves and not what they are being made to worry about or told they should now accept in the world. I personally am a huge superman fan, but I am sorry, there is no reason that I can see to make Jon Kent bisexual. These writers just want to make a name for themselves and think that they are going to change how people look at comics. Comics have been around for a very long time and it is like the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it "

I still do not understand why we discuss their sexuality at all. I understand its part of life and peter parker is with mary jane and all but i would rather keep these issues out of comics. I dont care what your sexuality is. Just if its a cool character or not. I hate though when it is retroactively changed like alan scott gl. Why? These seem gimmicky to me in that respect. Thanks dante

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  2 года назад +1

Exactly!! It is super gimmicky, that’s the problem. DC and Marvel are putting out this content yes to be inclusive, but I think the bigger agenda here is to drive sales and stay relevant in the mainstream. This is all to drive the collectors market… I had one viewer say, in the 90s in was foil covers and deaths driving speculation now it’s gay characters that have replaced classic gimmicks. Thanks for your thoughts Jerryd!

Nay Nay Nay, I will try to solve the puzzle in just 1 comment. Communist from within the USA & foreign run/own/bought many entertainment industries/companies over the years, including big tech social media platforms like RUclips it's self lol...which is why I think you mentioned a while back, that one of your videos got taken down for talking about a particular topic lol...that being said...masculinity has been gradually under attack globally, but especially in America lately.
People will ask why? What's the point of "attacking masculinity." My theory is...which many already call factual...is that they are gradually trying to indoctrinate men more and more as the years/generations go by...to make them mentally, emotionally & physically weak. To the point that the majority of men aren't willing to defend/fight for their nation or country...so that communism can ultimately/gradually take over from within the mind first, because they can't always do it head on...as crazy as that sounds. It sounds "conspiratorial," I know...well here we are with a bunch of woke shit everywhere & mandates simultaneously as we speak, especially in Canada & very much so in Australia. If you do your research on what's going on in other countries like Australia you'll see what I am talking about...and the best part is if you don't agree with the "woke shit," you're all the negative names under the sun...lol I'm not panicking or paranoid...I think most ppl are waking up & will eventually not be afraid to speak up against what is going on...but just an observation I've had over the years.
Lastly, I am not saying gay people are not willing to join the military or fight or speak up for freedom or their country etc...I am just explaining what these control freak psychopaths are trying to do. It's already back firing on them...thank God lol...GREAT TOPIC & VIDEO BTW! Glad to see you back...

consider this: theyre trying to grow the parts of the audience that are smaller into bigger ones. the comic book industry has been in steep decline for 30 years, upheld almost exclusively by the strength of film adaptation $$ from the IPs.
"nonexistent audiences" are exactly who you need to target certain new products to if you want to GROW the business.
this is EXTREMELY basic business logic. i hope these anti-SJW nerds never run a comic book business.

Nay. I grew up with Clark Kent Superman not Jon Kent. Why does everything have to be about identity politics? I'm quite frankly tired of all this talk about sexual identity, racial identity, & political identity. Why can't they make a character without that being the main characteristic. There are plenty of superheroes without that at their core. If they kill off Clark Kent then I'll stop reading Superman comics. I'll go over to Batman & Teen Titan comics if that happens. I'm currently reading these comics
    Batman
    Detective Comics
    Teen Titans Academy
    Nightwing
    United States Of Captain America
    Thor
    Guardians Of The Galaxy
    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I think it's not the fact of being bisexual but changing characters that we grow up with, I would love for new characters to be bisexual or gay. But don't change the current characters. Make new characters in all types of race, gender and ethnic groups. We are all in a hug melting pot and would love to see what can come out of that. I think it's sad for Comic book companies using what is an issue now a days to sell comics.

As a queer comic book reader I love seeing representation in one of my favorite mediums of entertainment. I don't seek it out specifically because at the end of the day what I'm looking for are good stories. However, if I can get that representation and relatability in a good story then that is certainly something that makes me happy.
With the whole Jon coming out as bisexual, I don't think it's a gimmick. Don't get me wrong, if I had my way Jon would still be 12 or 13 paling around with Damien as the Super Sons and we wouldn't be dealing with this right now at all. Though seeing as Tom Taylor is a strong and passionate queer ally I do not believe he made this decision with anything but the utmost sincerity and respect.
Did DC and the media blow this up way bigger than it may have needed? Oh yes, absolutely. I'm not gonna try to say otherwise because it was a media circus for a few months there. On the other hand, coming out in real life can be really scary. It doesn't always go well and people you knew before may never look at you the same way. They might judge you, cut all ties, pretend they don't know you.
So honestly, the internet blowing up with a variety of reactions to both Jon and Tim Drake coming out as bisexual felt kind of appropriate. People have to remember that there's more to a person than just being straight, gay, bi, trans, whatever. It's just a part of who you are. Not the whole you. It might define you for a time, depending on how important it is to you. Eventually though, in time, it just blends with the other parts that make up the complete person.
