    Great video! You explained it in a way that is easy to understand. I made a video about my journey on Intermittent Fasting and OMAD (one meal a day). I attempted to explain how the body converts carbs into glycogen and glucose in an easy to understand way but of course you explained it in way more detail and it was still easy to understand. Thanks for all your videos, you are one of the biggest reasons why I started IF and OMAD and I have changed my life. Its been 1 year of OMAD and I have never felt better mentally and physically. I can now fit my son's jeans, I used to have a 34" waist and now it's only 28".

    Glycogen is a useful term, to know,
    thanks Doc.
    Ok! So I learned
    - glycogen is stored sugar.
    - There’s more glycogen, with potassium
    - carbs turn into glycogen, which turns to fat
    - additionally, our brain eats blood-glucose, from that glycogen
    - it prefers ketones, from that fat.

    hey Dr Berg
    first of I love the amount of information you put up here. however, I'd like to correct you on one aspect because it might cause some miss understanding and miss inform most people but both of the stress hormones cortisol and epinephrine are responsible for the release of glycogen into the bloodstream elevating blood glucose. these hormones are so effective at doing this that it can kick people out of ketosis during the first several days on an intermittent or a prolonged fast. I'm currently actually writing the effects of IF and ketosis in diabetics and wanted to include my finding on the effects if stress on blood sugar levels while on IF

    Hi Dr. Berg, I am bodybuilder but would like to lose fat and gain muscle. If I did ketogenic diet would my muscles decrease?

    • @alexandrakingi8502
      @alexandrakingi8502 3 года назад +1

      Carbs are the bodies prefered energy source especially when trying to build muscle. The best option would be to eat at maintenance level calories rather than being in a calorie surplus. Even though a surplus is more optimal for muscle growth. Because you want to lose fat also then stay at maintenance level calories. Keto is good for fast result fat loss but remember. You intially lose alot of water weight first on keto rather than actual body fat. When you work out while on keto you feel flat and depleted, its hard to get a workout pump while on keto also its not very high in protein and protein is what you need to nuild muscle, atleast a gram of protein per pound of body weight for optimal results.

    • @susansauls8902
      @susansauls8902 6 лет назад +2

      LAINA thomas I get hungry when I become sleep deprived. For me, it is because my body craves energy and food is a quick fix. It's not the solution my body really needs however; of course what I really need is sleep. I always gain weight when I allow myself to become sleep deprived. For me, there is no substitute for sound sleep.

    • @alainmancilla8181
      @alainmancilla8181 3 года назад

      Ifs because of your circadian rhythm. Your body is used to eating at does times. But usually your hungry is will lower the more you get adapted to fasting, low carb diet or any diet. Try consuiming, water, apple cider, or green tea.

    I started ketogenic diet 19 weeks ago,I was 90 Kgs when I started,and today my weight is 67.5Kgs,I'm so happy with keto that I decided to keep on as a lifestyle.
    Now I started to train,as I want now to bulk,but most of gym experts and coaches say that you must use carbs in addition to increase your protein so you can bulk your muscles.
    How can I bulk my muscles without getting of ketodiet and using carbs??
    I tried to find a satisfing answer,but I couldn't understand why is glycogen so important to muscles? although I myself studied that in medicin school.

      @slayermenta 3 месяца назад

      He is anti-carb. It's not just our brains, It's our whole body that loves glucose. Try doing heavy manual labor on ketones. Or anything high intensity, really. Keto/Carnivore diet is for people who have low stress lives and don't do any physically demanding tasks.

    • @backcountryashley
      @backcountryashley 3 месяца назад

      @slayermenta But All you have to do is watch the show Life Below Zero and you'll see that people who are living a subsistence lifestyle have like a 90% meat and fat diet BECAUSE of how much work they have to do every day living off the land just to survive.

    • @slayermenta
      @slayermenta 3 месяца назад +2

      @backcountryashley Meat is probably one of the best foods on the planet and is mainly protein and fat. However, a human still needs solid energy, and neither protein nor fat would give you that quick burst of energy like carbohydrates. I know there is a process called "gluconeogenesis," which converts protein into glucose, but it's not something you'd want as it's a slow thing and you'd need to eat a lot of protein in a day, otherwise muscle will break down into protein to be converted. Balanced diets seem to be the most reliable. However, if someone is more active or has a tough job, then carbohydrates >protein>fat.
      If you were talking about humans from 10,000 years ago, these guys were pure survival, they struggling with food. That is why they were so skinny and short, their calories were super low most of the time and when they had food (which was an animal they hunted) they feasted on that animal the very same day it was captured. This was going on for most of human history. We never had access to food like we have now.
      Edit: Forgot to say that it's impossible to do high intensity sports without adequate carbohydrate intake. Anyone who says they do is lying.
      Protein repairs the body.
      Fats give the longest energy but suck at high intensity events.

    • @vickieturner8688

      newton, banana has a lot of calories. You really should expand and flesh out your question with more information. If you ARE doing Keto and/or IF, what are your goals for doing so? Is it for general good health, weight loss, healing of one or more issues? Understanding where you are makes giving you an answer much easier. I'm guessing that you have not gone through the free Keto Mini-Course or watched many of Dr. Berg's videos. The blue link for the Keto course is just under the video. It's only about 20 minutes or so. Dr. Berg recommends SMALL amounts of fruit, if eaten at all. Do a search of his videos for fruit and the Keto diet.

    I would love if you Dr. Eric Berg could explain glycogen repletion. I did 1 month with carnivore diet preparing for 21 days of water fasting (plus vitamins, salt, etc) and with the water fasting lost weight from 112kg (246lb) to 95kg(209lb) then I ate OMAD carnivore for 10 days small portions not gorged and went up to 100kg (220lb). After those 10 days I did 20 days water fasting again and went from 100kg (220lb) to 85kg (187lb) and started again with OMAD carnivore. After 10 days I am up in 90 kg (198lb). Are those weight increases due to the body's glycogen repletion? Its very frustrating. Will greatly appreciate your comments.
