When to use a fairway wood or a hybrid - what's the difference?

As I often say, there are no 100% rules for every single shot but there are guidelines which can help you making the right decisions. Many Golfers have both kind of clubs in their bag: Fairwaywoods and Hybrids.
There a many differences about these clubs but for me the question, when to take which club off the deck / Semirough, makes a huge difference.

Good points, Martina! I recently started carrying a 5 wood in my bag and tried using it in lies like you showed in this video. And, I’ve ruined a lot of shots because I used the 5 wood when I should have used the hybrid. I’ll be using the hybrid from now on. Thank you!

You have to try it out. In my bag the 5 hybrid replaces my 5 iron and 4 hybrid my 4 iron...

for being very new to learning golf, what would you recommend as a first hybrid? I am 1.62m, and I have 3 through 9 irons, and a driver, 3 and 5 woods,and rest of the kit. TY

Well Jessica, first of all I would replace at least the 3 and 4 iron, if not even the 5 as well. But if you get on with them, keep them. I would go from there. If you take out 4 and 3 replace it first with a 4 hybrid. I am carrying my longest club 6 iron - PW, GW,SW, LW and Hybrid 5,4,3, 3 wood and Driver. I am also 1.64 small and don't have the angles to hit long irons. Maybe that helps you!

I guess you instructors play with the worst golfers. Everyone of you say “95%” or “most golfers”. I must be lucky. The people I see every day, actually play quite well. This is the 4th video that started off with how bad we are. I just don’t like those assumptions. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

So when is the right time to choose the other club? When lying good on the fairway??

It depends how the ball sits and how much grass is around the ball. If you have a silly lie (like in a divot or so) on the fairway, I would also choose an Iron or Hybrid to get a steeper angle of attack to the ball!
