- In this video I will show you how to hit one of the most useful and forgiving clubs in your bag, the hybrid. The hybrid is a very versatile club that you can use in multiple situations which will help you lower your scores. Let me show you how to hit a hybrid!
A lot of amateurs struggle with long irons due to a lack of speed. In order to hit a long iron successfully you need to be able to generate enough speed to to get enough height and distance. This is where a hybrid comes into the spotlight. Due to the way a hybrid is designed it is able to launch the ball a lot higher at any speed. This means no matter if you're a beginner golfer or pro golfer this club can benefit you
In this video I will take you through a guide that will teach you how hit the hybrid correctly every time. To start with we'll go through the correct concept, followed by the correct setup and then 2 keys that are guaranteed to help you hit your driver better than ever. If you can master this club then you will play better golf and your scores will start to lower fast!
Check out this video, let me show you how to hit your hybrid and like always let me know what other golf coaching videos you would like to see!

Giles just want to say ty for all your help with explosive lessons that have helped overall on all facets of golf , the explanation as to why we do what we do really helps instead of some derogatory remarks why we suck !
No problem Pete! This game is hard so just trying to do my bit to help
Love it! Presented in an easy to understand way. Sometimes peeps just like to hear themselves talk and to use wording that an average golfer cannot understand. This is great.
Glad you enjoyed the video and that the language was easy to understand
Nice simple explanations, nice simple drills. Good teaching method.
Thank you!
Thanks for the tip. Sometimes I hit well and most of the time I top it. Now I will be able to hit them with confidence.
Perfect! Good luck!
Great. I use the 3 hybrid all the time, and you have shown me a couple of good tips which might improve my contact and distance. thanks
Amazing! I hope that these do translates to more distance for you
Another great video. Thanks.
I recently traded my 1980s blades for some "modern" clubs. Only went down to 5 iron (blades had a 2 iron), so I bought a hybrid to fill the gap at the low end........my word....it launches like a 9 iron and flys like a 4 iron. WOW. What I've been missing all these years. 😂
It’s crazy isn’t it! It’s really like cheating 😂
@Gilesgillgolf i remember hitting 2 irons off the turf. Then taking 3putts on the green.
@@fraserlawson8522 oh no we don’t want those 3 putts 😂
Thank you for making this. I bought 3,4,5 Hybrids this afternoon and cannot wait to get acclimated using your tips. Subscribed
Good luck! Hope the hybrid takes your game to the next level
After watching your video on hitting the 3 wood and having great success with it now I watched this video several times then went to the driving range and worked on my Hybrid and now I am hitting that club with great success on the course. I am now very comfortable and confident using it whenever I need to and my game has greatly improved since seeing those two videos, thanks for putting out great easy to understand tips.
That is awesome!
My new best friend indeed! Can't believe how well I can strike the ball. Worth every penny.
Thank you 😁
Great job Giles on explaining how to hit a hybrid! As an experienced golfer, I just don't have the clubhead speed any longer to successfully launch a 3 or 4 iron, so I have transitioned over the the hybrid. I now carry a 3, 4, and 5 hybrid and I love them. I'm able to get a higher launch angle and they're definitely a "go to" club on long trouble shots. I even use them like a putter when confronted with a short of the green type shot. Always learning from your video's Giles! Keep up the good work!
Exactly that! Don’t fight it by trying to play long irons but instead do what you did which is to put user friendly clubs in the bag
I couldn't agree with you more Giles! Since I got a hybrid, I no longer use my 5 iron :-) thanks for tips on how to use it. Love the t-drill.

Yes treat them like an iron
Thanks, I’ll definitely give what you said a go. I always seem to have problems getting loft with my Hybrid, they’re always low burners. 👍
Hope this helps!
Great job giles ,your trying your best to explain more about .our the best
Thank you!
My 4 iron is my go to club. I use it off the tee when Im struggling with driver. I use it from the fairway for most shots over 160 yards. I feel more comfortable taking something off my 4 iron than I do clubbing down. Its also my punch out club when I need to hit a low runner. I would be lost without it.
Nice!
Love the break down on the stance and key swing thoughts. Biomarkers we can use on the course and in practice are really useful. Would love to see a tutorial on 9 vs P for shots just outside A.
Glad it was helpful! But the technique for those clubs is the same

Just found your site. Love it. Subscribed. Learned a lot already.
I have 3 - 7 hybrids and every one is better for me than the iron of the same number.
But, would you address two things.
1. you hit the grass a little bit before the tee
2. look at your shoulders on the last hybrid big swing (not level)
Glad you enjoyed the video!

I’ll have a think about it 👍🏻
The Ping G430 hybrids have helped my lower my Handicap to a single digit
Amazing and congratulations on getting to single figures
Good lesson - filled in some gaps in my understanding of how to hit this club. I need it!
What would you say about the lie? I think that in a rough you need to defer to the iron so you can "dig it out" of deeper grass. I handle my 3 iron that way. What do you think?
I’ve just done a video on hitting a hybrid in different lies so check that out
Regarding tempo, should I swing harder than say a 6 or 7 iron?
You will naturally do that yes
I actually strike my hybrid pretty well but for some reason I have a real problem placing the club behind the ball. It's only the hybrid that does this but for me it wants to sit closed at address. I have to consciously adjust it to square and then fight the tendency to close it again. I don't know if it's the balance or just psychological.
Might be how the hybrid is setup. Is it a modern one or old one?
@@Gilesgillgolf About 8 years old - it's a Nike 3 hybrid so that dates it a bit as they don't even make golf clubs anymore more - I hit it around 200 - 220yds depending on the strike. But then I'm 65 years old so that's OK.
Giles There is also an opinion that sweeping the ground rather than a down ward stroke id effective. Any view on this?🙂
It’s a wrong opinion 😂 Every great player hits down around -1 to -4 degrees with fairway woods and hybrids. The facts don’t lie
Would love a video on how to hit the 3 wood off the deck. I hit my hybrids sweet with a nice draw, but my FW's seem always to fade. To the point I am looking for long hybrids like a 17" to replace my FW. Any help would be appreciated!
Already done that video 👍🏻
I wouldn’t mess with the 3 wood. U need a perfect lie and still a low percentage shot. Just stroke a hybrid 180-200. Pitch it to 5-15 feet, try and make a putt
@@chevy4x466 a good club fitter can build any club to do the intent job
@@Gilesgillgolf interesting, can the club fitter work with budget or used clubs to keep me in a budget. As a family man with kids that play, I can’t bring home a brand new set of titleist
@@chevy4x466 that depends on who you go to. The guys I use the U.K. 100% can do that but I can’t speak for anywhere else
Great tip Giles. I'm 66 and been playing for 3 years. I bought a TaylorMade Sim 2 hybrid a while back and at first hit it ok. Lately though Ive been topping it. I'll try your advice. Can I ask? What's the ball position for a 7 wood? Cheers.
Same ball position as in the video
Just a question: during a round, are you allowed to practice swing hitting something on the ground (a tee, a stick, a piece of trash, etc.)? The little trick with the tee brought this to mind... Before you hit your shot, can you throw a tee on the ground and take a practice swing (or two) before you actually address the ball and take the shot?
Yes you are, can’t throw a tee down but if it’s down already then you can
Great Video!!!!!!
Thank you
I like this video, I suscribed
Thank you!
Hi Giles, great video, however I do have a tendency to hit my hydrids out-to-in which leaves me with a fade and I am losing some distance, sometimes it even goes quite a long way out to the right. Is there a tip you can give to help change it to more of an in-to-out swing ?

great video, thanks! For lining up do you use the bottom or the top line of the club? My shots tend to go to the right, therefore I am asking...

Bro, I hate golf videos. I just watched a video right before this one that said the exact opposite of what he just said 😂 golf is hard
Listen to me
@@Gilesgillgolf I will from now on. I’m hitting them so much better now.
A lot of golf is a racket. There is literal snake oil being sold everywhere. There is no substitute for practice. How can you practice the most? If I would have had a simulator in the seventies, I would have used it constantly. Sure, it doesn’t replace actual play but the technology is growing and the information is critical. I used to practice in the yard with plastic balls. No lessons, just hours and hours of swinging the clubs. I had my own little courses laid out and I would compete with different balls. I went from no experience to shooting par golf in high school freshman year. Calvin Peete had a broken arm and taught himself how to swing. He was one of the most accurate players ever.
Should the hybrid only be hit from the fairway for it to be hit properly?
Not at all, it’s a super versatile club and can be hit from pretty much anywhere
Another awesome video
Thank you!
I'm ok with the 3 iron, 🏴
👍🏻
Hi Giles
Where is the ball position with hybrid 3 when playing a ball below feet
Same position or slightly further back
Love my hibreds, but find that if l try to hit them too hard they hook like blazes, any cure
Hybrids are know for hooking, might not have the right one in yours hands
4 iron is my favorite club these days. Should look into a 3
Do it!
Hi Giles
I struggle with hitting my irons wedges to 8 okay but the others not to good.
My question is I hit my hybrids a lot better so could I change to all hybrids.
How far do you hit your 7 iron?
Carry distance not roll
Cheers for the reply.
140 if I connect right I just don’t swing irons as good as hybrids for some reason.
@@shanefeetham2920 best bet is to go for a fitting and try some different shafts and clubs but yes you’ll need something easy to launch
Cheers
That’ll be my next step been looking at the ping 430 they seem to go to 34deg.
Would the ball position be the same if using a 3 , 4 , 5 hybrid?
Basically the same yes
Been playing a 4 5 and 6 hybrid for about a year and a half really well but then as I started hitting my irons faster and longer .
my hybrids started to suffer and my shots began to become lower and much more pull to the left... now I want to ditch the hybrids and hit long irons... should I ?
Do what works so yes
All of my clubs are hybrids. Including one of my wedges. How do I treat them?
Like an iron. Always treat it like the club you are replacing
I grew up learning the CLIP THE QUARTER Drill when hitting my Irons! That should still be a good drill with hybrids and woods?
Never heard of that drill
It's mainly done with the Irons and is very similar to the reel drill in the video? Basically you placed a Quarter behind the ball and then try to clip the Quarter as you make contact with the golf ball.
@@jamesklapetzky8633 ah I see. Well with hybrid and woods we are still trying to hit down so yes as long as you understand that concept and you’re trying to achieve that ball then ground contact the you’ll be great
I used to always use hybrids and then when I dropped to blade irons, three and four, for some weird reason I’m killing it
In a good or bad way?

Love my hybrids
They’re great clubs!
I find that there is a huge difference between my hybrid distances for no apparent reason. All other clubs are pretty consistent distances, but I can get anything from 175 yards to 220 yards with my Calloway ST Max 4 Hybrid (I hit my 5 iron 185 yards consistently). Often it will feel like i've hit it really well only to find it's only gone 180 yds. Very odd.
Will be the quality of strike
@@Gilesgillgolf quality of strike is pretty consistent with my irons and driver. I really can't work out what I'm doing wrong with the hybrid.
9 and 11 wood thx.
👍🏻
How about ball position for a 7 or 8 hybrid
The same
Do you slightly deloft a hybrid?
Yes
Why do I hook my hybrids? I hit all my other clubs with a slight draw .. it blows my mind and makes me not want to hit them. I have to open the club up to maybe hit it straight.
Sounds like you need to get down to a good custom fit centre. If you’re in the UK I can recommend places
For some reason, I cannot get the elevation with the hybrid. Even my 5 iron has more elevation - just can't work it out
Couple of reasons: Not enough speed, too much shaft lean, low strike face or wrong shafts
@mikesmith1485 no this isn’t one
I'm a short guy at 5'3". How do i address the ball. Should i lean forward bend at my waist or should i stand straight up. I find difficulty hitting the ball.
Just did a video on posture so check it out
@@Gilesgillgolf thanks Pro. 👍🏌♀️

Thank you!
How do you stop hooking a hybrid. I have no trouble hitting one well they just curve hard left.
Firstly what hybrid do you have and were you fitted for it?
@@Gilesgillgolf I have a G30 ping hybrid. Not fitted. Every hybrid I pick up I hook it?
@@CraigFairbanks-n4ido you hit it out of the toe?
@@Gilesgillgolf not that I am aware of. The club just sets like it wants to hook at address. I have to forcably open the face or move the ball way farther back in my stance. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be.
Add slow motion in the videos is my advice 😊
Thanks
FYI, I'm an aged golf player and only play woods 1,3,5,7 hybrid 5 and irons 6,7,9, P, S. Reason is that losing flexibility and power at almost 80 years old is this my recipe for staying around HC 20. MY profile picture is actual. Videos like yours improve many times my game and strategy. Some slow motion improves a lot the message you bring. Thank you 🇳🇱 👌 and my compliments.

Good lesson. Time to harvest the wheat?
My golf ball hopes so haha
I like hybrids on nicely manicured courses but I need the irons on beat up public courses where you never get a good like or even grass to hit from. The shape is much better at digging the ball out of bad lies.
When you get into a bad lie hybrids are still great for getting it out. Ball back slight, hands and weight forwards and hit down on it a little more
I too play on a course that has significant thin grass areas with hard hard hard dirt underneath. If I was the tiniest bit heavy the blades that I used it would STOP going through the ground and the ball. With hybrids the club may bounce slightly but it still gets 90% of the distance. FWIW.
What shirt is that??? I have that symbol on my callaway mack daddy wedge
JL golf
And for me, I cannot make my 3 or 5 hybrid clubs working for me consistently. I am planning to take a few lessons on using them on the fairway. At best, I might connect with my 3 and send it flying a straight drive MAYBE waist high. It is so frustrating because I'm a beginner and when I need to make up distance, I need to connect with them. Hopefully, this video will improve my game in this aspect.
Also check out my hybrid videos then, as they will help

I gave up golf 20 years ago, and when I came back, everyone told me "dump your long irons! get a hybrid!". I tried, but a hybrid was a total fail for me, because the heavy swing weight caused the the clubhead to get ahead of my hands. On most shots I hit them fat or thin, but those were better than the ones where I made good contact. If I made good contact, the shots went low, left, and also hooked, leading to disastrous outcomes.
I finally gave up on hybrids, and I now 5 iron, 3 iron, and a 7 wood, and they all have comparable swing weights. I hit them all high and straight, and feel confident that I can hit a good shot with any of them.
Hybrids aren’t for everything but the more recent models have been a lot better. Old hybrids always used to hook
@@Gilesgillgolf Interesting that they have fixed this. Still, I'm happy with my current clubs, and I think my overall golf is better when all my clubs have similar swing weights. I'll keep this information in mind, though.

Here i am with my 4i as my most consistent iron... and can't hit a hybrid to save my life... lol... 😂
Do what works
I despise my 4 Hybrid - that club is a hooking machine. I'm planning on purchasing the 4I for my TaylorMade P790's
Technology has come along way. Go get fit with the latest tech from a GOOD fitter and see if that helps. I used to hate hybrids but got hit by Gatwick golf for a new one and it’s incredible
I got fit at Club Champion by a fitter who is listed in Golf Digest as among the best in my area. The Hybrid in question is a Titleist TSi2.
I'm sure it's my swing and not the club. I just can't hit Hybrids well and used to crush my 4i previous to the P790s (I have similar issues with woods off the deck...massive hooks or low pulls left). I was even proficient hitting my 3i. The Hybrid does nothing but frustrate me, it's ahook machine the way I swing it. Mark O'Meara looked at my swing and said I'm releasing the club too soon, causing that hook. No idea how to fix that and the way I hit the 4i in the past, I don't see a reason to try to figure it out.

You might be the only one in the world
Thanks, my problem is that I can’t control the height of the club head at the bottom of the arc. Thus 95% fat or thin (sometimes just touching the top of the ball) and most of the remaining 5% have no elevation at all. Very frustrating.
