  • The golfer's favorite club for a chip is still a wedge, of course of various kinds. That's legitimate, but it always makes more sense to keep the ball literally "flat". There is much less that can happen and the technique is also much easier than with the higher version.
This video shows how to approach in a simple way and a good exercise for you to improve your touch around the green!
    Have fun with it!

I agree with these tips. I can approach the green more confidently hitting with a hybrid or an iron most of the time.

Thank you! I leave so many chips short with my pitching wedge that I started using my 8 or 6 iron with better results. 😊

I don't have a lot of time to practice/master chipping with a bunch of clubs. I think chipping with one, maybe two clubs, is much easier to get good at/build confidence with for most amateurs like me. However, I appreciate your advice. ✌🏿✌🏿🇯🇲

Thanks for sharing. I think there are different kind of players. Some like many different variations and some like just a few. For me I like the idea to have different kind of shots I could use and I simply choose the easiest in the particular situation. If you are great with only two club, I totally understand and would never change that for you!

Martina - agree absolutely! Most amateur golfers playing for fun and to reduce their handicaps could consider using different clubs - hybrids especially - to send the ball over the rough and then run straight like a putt. For me I could say if I want to reduce risk - or if there is a “hump” to get over this or an iron is easier than the “hero” shot. Wedges are real - but as you say - there is less reward and when we go wrong - long putts are 50% at best!

I know what you are saying and totally agree
I sometimes just take my 3 wood 7 iron and putter and play 9 hole just to experiment

Great that you found a club which works for you. But don't be affraid to try also different clubs in practise - that will make you even more flexible!

Excellent tips. Personally I don't like chipping with a wood, I think there is no feedback from the hollow club head. But otherwise she is right on a super important point: bad or slightly missed chips are far less damaging than a bad pitch. Around the greens, roll the ball as much as you can. I often take my putting grip with a 7 or 8 iron, hold the club upright (like a putter) and just hit the toe of the club. Very few terrible shots with that, plenty of up and down.

There is never a must, but I think the more variation you have in your short game, the better player you become!

I agree, I have tried chipping with a hybrid, but it is hard to gauge the right distance. Using something like a putting grip with a 7 or 8 iron is often the best option, it gives feel as well as better control.

@@Jazzman874 I would suggest a hybrid mostly, once you have some kind of putt either with the putter or you use the hybrid and you make almost the same kind of move... so its not so tough to judge the distance!

I use my 9 iron and 7 iron with much better results than my wedges but it's what I've developed for my game as was always short with my wedges.

For me, it depwnds on: how away am I from the green? Could I putt? How deep does the ball lie in the grass?
