    This is very useful. I have a 17-18 handicap, have played for 59 years, and will be 80 in June. I have played forged blades for many years and just like them. Have had Mizuno MP-33s and MP67s. The ones I have now are classic weak lofts, with my 7-iron being 35.5 degrees. I focus hard on making good contact (always use foot powder on the face at the range). I can carry the 7-iron 130-135 yards, although have been working hard on improving my swing and recently with warmer weather have had best strikes carry 140-42. But I can clearly see the compression in yardage with the longer irons that one faces with age and slower swing speeds, so that there is very little gap between the 3 iron and 4 iron.
    I figure that I get about 165-170 yards carry with my 4 iron using range balls, though with my own good ball on a warm day on the course it might be up to 175. I can get 185 to maybe 200 with my 3 wood, a 15 degree KZG maraging steel oldie but goodie with a Graffalloy ProLite shaft that I think is R flex (has 35+ on the other side). I get about 205+ yards carry and 225-230 total yards with my driver, a Callaway Epic Sub Zero 10.5 degree head set neutral with a Graphite Design Tour AD IZ 5 R1 shaft (also have the AD IZ 6 S shaft and go back and forth between them) and occasionally up to 245 depending on roll out and whether the fairway is cut and dry.
    Since I still play from the tees that have total yardages of 6100-6800 yards, I face a lot of 175 to 210 yard second shots on par 4s. So from watching tests like yours, it seems increasingly clear that I need to swap out my 3 iron and possibly 4 iron for something like a 5 wood and 7 wood. I do have a 5 wood, but it was not designed to have a CG set low and back to help with higher trajectory and softer landing. It is a 19 degree Sonartec Driving Cavity NP99 model with an Aldila NV 75 gram R/S flex shaft, designed with Nick Price's preferences in mind, meaning a quick transition and penetrating flight. I also have a 19 degree Cleveland HiBore hybrid 2 iron. Cleveland put all the specs on its shaft: 83 gram 3.2 torque mid kickpoint 370 tip. When I swing this correctly, it can launch high and allow me to reach a green, say a par 3, at 185-190 yards. But it has to be struck just right.
    Bottom line: It seems to me that many 5 and 7 woods these days are designed with the CG further back and low specifically to help players like me get a higher trajectory, steeper descent angle, and softer landing with less rollout on those long approach shots and par 3s. Your test and other videos I have seen make this point.

    This is honestly the MOST important part of everyone's bag - and so few people have optimized it. If you remove strong younger males, basically Jackie's swing speed realistically matches most golfers that actually play. #4 / 22-degree hybrids work if your Driver swing speed is 100mph+, and #5 / 25-degree hybrids work if your Driver speed is 95mph+. 7-woods and 9-woods are far better choices for 'most' golfers - then into a 7-hybrid and then 7,8,9,PW. It's also true that 5wood is a far better choice than 3wood for this group

    • @alysgolfstudio567
      @alysgolfstudio567 2 года назад

      @@boxerboy860 really depends on how and how far you hit each club and whether you use the others you mention regularly eg the 5 iron. Also depends what suits your swing and your course. For example after a lot of tweaking and checking I have ended up with the following configuration that now meets all my needs and distances especially on the course I play regularly. Also depends whether you hybrid is adjustable or not. See below. So I have a driver set at 11 degrees; then a 3 wood at 18 degrees; then a 3 hybrid (18 degrees) but adjusted to 20 degrees; then a 6 iron to pw. Then two wedges - a 50 and either a 54 or sometimes a 56 again depending on what is the best bounce and soft or hard sands etc. I find that some of the traditional measures of something being equivalent between an iron and hybrid for example does not really apply to me- ie depends of how you strike them, whether you are using them to run or to stop on the green (ie viz long iron and hybrid for example). Once you have the best mix for you and that suits your swing course etc you will get a lot of confidence from the set. One thing I have found extremely useful is to go. Out with every other iron eg one day 6,8,pw another day 7,9, gw and that way you also find out which combination works best for you in terms of versatility and creativity as well as working the ball differently. Great discipline and practice taking fewer clubs and really good for your golf game - quite apart from then allowing you have a much lighter bag, walk the course etc.

    I’m a weird one, as I don’t use a 3Wood. I find I’m too errant and miss a lot of fairways with it. Also I don’t play a lot of long golf courses, so my fairway finder club off the tee is a 5 Wood. Yeah I lose some distance, but I’m very confident of keeping it on the short stuff. From there I play a 3-4 hybrid at 21 deg and then into 5 iron. But, I do carry a 2 hybrid which I find is easier to hit than 3W with the shorter shaft, but also gives me a lower penetrating ball flight than 5W if I need to hit into the wind. Like I said, weird... but it works for me. Cheers

I carry 52 and 58-degree wedges for a 12-club lighter walking setup. I then have other clubs if I want more or conditions require - Callaway Subzero 3Wood set open at 12.5 degrees, Mizuno 2-hybrid set open at 15-degrees, Mizuno 3 hybrid set open at 18 degrees, and a low-bounce 62-degree wedge for firm hard sand.

    This is a much better video than the one I previously watched and makes more sense and come out with the numbers I would expect. I watched the 7+9wood vs 4+5hybrid video where the 4hybrid was beating the 7wood in distance even when they were in their original lofts. I carry 5wood 18° and 4hybid 22° but was looking at filling this gap and a 7wood seems to be the best contender especially as someone who has a steep swing and low ball flight the 7wood will hopefully help me get the ball in the air easier and maybe if I get one in 21° can turn it down to a 20° club which could fit the gap perfectly 😬🤞🙏

    Doesn’t it depend on the kind of shot you hit most? If you play some long par3’s and stay on the fairway most of the time, then a seven wood might be perfect. If you get into the rough on your par fives, or need to play low stingers under trees, then the hybrid might be a better answer. I’m thinking about not using a lob wedge, and getting both.

  • @jmac_619

    I am a 12 HC and the main reason I play a 3 hybrid instead of my 5 wood is because I think it is easier to hit out of the rough. I am not on tour, shocker, so I find myself hitting out of the rough more often than some. If I had a perfect lie like on the range or a simulator I would take a wood all day every day. But, given that my lies are ever changing, a wood doesn't make sense for my game. Now I am even contemplating whether or not to throw out my 4 iron and get a 4 hybrid.
