Great comparison guys. I've put my 4 iron in the closet and started to use a hybrid this year and I'm seeing good results and shaved 2 or 3 strokes off my score.
Most golfers have slower swing speeds and most videos have testers with high swing speeds..we need to see how the Clubs perform at lower speeds if we are considering buying a club!!
Exactly. Need mid to high handicapper testing who are in that handicap range due to overall game not just dropping loads of shots 60 yards out of pin. So a tester who on par 4s looking to get realistic 2 shots out from 3 shots in not someone whos looking to be on the pin or close after 2 on a par 4 say.
I play the ping g425 3-wood, 5 wood, 7 and 9 wood the 5-wood is replacing my 4-iron the 7-wood is replacing a 5-iron and the nine wood is replacing my 6-iron I keep my 5 wood at 19 degrees, 7 wood at 22 degrees and the 9 wood at 25 degrees for the gapping... absolutely love the 7 wood and 9 wood super easy to hit love the way it lands on the Green no way I could have an iron stop on the green like the 7 wood and the 9 wood
It would be nice to have this comparison with someone who has lower swing speed. I dropped my 5-iron for a 9-wood three weeks ago and, boy am I happy! Swing speed in the mid-80's and poor contact resulted in a 5-iron I hit inconsistently between 130 & 160 yards. With the 9-wood I'm hitting 145 carry off the deck (trackman) and in-round distances between 155 & 165 yards (shotscope V3 data). I was planning to pick up a 7-wood too, but after gapping my clubs in trackman bay, I found out I now have a 20 yard gap between 6-iron and 9-wood carry distance. Plan to get a 5-hybrid and crank the loft to split the difference between 6I & 9W lofts to fill the gap.
Every time I see these comparison videos they talk about hybrids being better for slower swing speed golfers but never test it on slower swing speed golfers it’s always golfers who swing the club 90-100+ mph… where’s the video with a golfer who has a 60-70mph swing speed
@@BB-pg5kl um, I obviously agree but was responding to the comment made above. Don’t see how what I said was redundant or worthless. 🙄 Or perhaps you didn’t see the comment I was responding to.
@@lawrencecirillo3233 you missed the entire point of this comment dude. Yes, a wood is better then a hybrid my comment is talking about how every coach will say hybrids/woods are better for slower swing speeds. but in every video they make comparing clubs with people swinging 90+ you cant take that data and say it will be the same results with a guy swing 60 or 70. So the video is pointless that was my point.
@@MrWubzHD2 they have actually done the same videos with two of their female fitters. One had a swing speed in the mid 90’s and another in the high 80’s. They both did NOT happen after your post here.
I have a similar set with a 5W ( 18.5) then a 7W ( 22.5) a one length Hybrid (19) for a lower penetrating shot for windy days, then 5 ( 24) and 6 ( 29) iron-hybrid style clubs, then SL irons 7-GW. The SL Hybrid is a vary versatile club, great for poor lies, bump and runs, punch shots. The hybrid-irons slot into the higher trajectory than an iron, but not as high as a Hybrid and so easy to to hit well.
Thanks for the comparison. I, along with many other viewers have a swing speed closer to that of Jackie Johnson. Would it be possible to see Jackie repeat the same comparison?
I really thought a 7 wood would've been more comparable at the beginning but the 9 wood really surprised me. My bag is 5-pw with 3hybrid 5hybrid and 6hybrid. Getting away from long irons really helped me. I'm older now with slower speed and inconsistent, and the hybrids really helped
Would love to see all 3 clubs at the end of the vid swung at 15mph less. It’s not like I don’t believe you Thomas 😉, but would actually love to see if the 4 iron does fall out of the sky, and see if the 5H & 9W are still so similar. Even though I’m not slow, I play a 5W rather than 3W as I feel more confident in hitting tight fairways, so I’m on board somewhat with your thinking. Cheers!
I use a 4 iron, its fine but there are times when I need it to be more forgiving. The slightest mishit and I loose a ton of distance. Tried hybrids and I find them way too hot onto a green and dispersion was not as tight... This opened up my mind to try a 9 wood, hoping to itll tighten dispersion while being high with some added forgiveness. Plus I hear 7-9 woods are awesome out of the rough.
Interesting video. If you go shopping for a 9 wood, you'll find lofts from 23° to 27°, and also the club lengths vary also. If we're going to talk about 9 woods, maybe a comparison of both ends of the spectrum of loft and length would be more helpful. Also watching a tour level golf swing is entertaining, it can also be a bit discouraging. Most of us are having a good day if we can get 230 yards from our drivers...
I see your points. I have a 7 Wood Ping G 425. Love it!!!! Thinking of adding a similar 9 Wood too. Great review. I really like where you two are going with this.
The thing is you can flight any club, like the tiger woods 7 iron stinger shot that's on RUclips. If you lead with the hands and saw off the follow through with ball slightly back in the stance and practice that shot on the range, you can flight a 7 or a 9 wood lower. Same way with a lot of modern irons like the hollow long irons you can flight them a lot higher if you want and learn how to do it. I really think 7 and 9 wood can be a really versatile club. Because it's going to be very easy out the ruff also which a 3 iron isn't going to be even possible. Flighting the ball is something I wish people would demonstrate when looking at the different club choices and higher lofted woods.
I'm a scratch golfer with plenty of speed (124 mph driver) and picked up a ping g410 9 wood earlier this year. Never liked the looks of a hybrid for some reason and loved the look of the 9 wood. It feels like cheating, it's become one of my favorite clubs ever. High and dead straight. Perfect into par 5s
I also have faster speed so looking for something when I am not hitting my long irons well. What distance do you typically get from it and does it stall in the wind at all? Thanks

Great video. I use a 5 hybrid after my 6i and even though they are only 1 degree of loft different I get perfect gapping. I was even just considering pulling the 4h and replacing with a 9w so the timing of this video is perfect.
I've seen most 9 woods in the 27-28 degree loft area. The ping looks very low to me at 23.5 for a 9 wood. Ping makes amazing clubs, but I can't afford them new, so I'll be looking at other brands and maybe even used. Looking to replace probably a 5 iron which for me is about 170-185. I just bought a used Ping K15 5 wood that I'm absolutely hammering 220-240 and a Cleveland Launcher 7 wood that I'm hitting about 195-210. I'm thinking a 9 wood just might fill the bill since for some reason I tend to hook the crap out of hybrids..
I know this might seem stupid but i wish ping made an 11wood. My 9wood goes about 150 in the air before rollout. My 6 iron is about 135 in the air. So i have at least a 10 yard Gap. And i hate hybrids.
I have played a 4 and a 5 Mizuno hybrid for a couple of seasons and decided to bin then in favour of an old 9W no name and love it. Hits just as far and straighter than the hybrids. I think the roll on the face of my hybrids have more bulge than the wood, causing more leaky shots in the swamp! Can’t beat the Mizuno hot metal irons.
I decided to replace my 5 and 4 irons to hybrids over winter to keep my carry distances. Hit them so well I’m keeping them in for the start of summer to see if they continue to help me. I went from 13 to 8 over winter.
Between driver and my longest iron, a 5i, I carry a 5w (18 degrees), 3h (19 degrees), 4h (set at 23 degrees) and am not happy with the gapping - particularly between 5w & 3h. I had thought about a having a 4w, 7w, 4h combination but I had not thought about a 9w. Clearly I need to rethink that, although maybe not on a windy day

love the higher lofted woods. my 7 wood is my favorite club, may replace the 4i with a 9 wood. I have decent swing speed but these woods are so forgiving and useful from the rough and on approaches. used to play hybrids and they were awful, hit the long irons much better but not as good as the woods.
My gapping is currently 3W 250 yards, 7W 220, 5i 205 (extremely inconsistent). Really want to switch out that 5i for a 9W. 7W seems around 90% consistently good strikes, 5i is about 40% consistent, that 5 iron really needs to get out of my bag. I'm thinking 9W should be even easier to hit than 7W, fairway woods just land so beautifully on greens with so much spin. I could never generate enough spin with a long iron to even come close sticking so perfectly.
I have the ping g410 4 & 6 hybrid & but my miss is a big hook, swapped out the 4 hybrid for an old TM 7 wood and its more consistent, is it common to hook a hybrid?
Awesome stuff, I have been wondering about the high lofted FW vs hybrid. Very interesting, how would you think these would do in imperfect lies? I struggle a bit with 4irons off moderate/below average lies.
Great video. If DJ can carry a 7 wood for his Masters win why can’t your average 10 handicapper. I carry a G410 7 wood then the G425 5 hybrid lofted down to 24.5 degrees. Perfect 205 and 190 yards clubs for me. Great for longer par 3’s.
Really struggle filling my gap currently have a t100 5 iron carry approx 215-225, then a 3 hybrid 19degree carry 240-250 then a 3 wood std loft 15 degree carry 260-270 , is it ideal gapping or would it be beneficial put club between the 5iron to 3 hybrid?
When I started golfing.... like ages ago. It was normal for everyone to have a driver , 3 ,5 ,7. But the clubs in general had other lofts so it was easier to have those clubs. Nowadays... with the stronger lofts makes it much harder to get all your lofts and spacings
These clubs should be seen as options to a traditional set. You will not a see a whole lot of 7-Woods at Royal St George's, but you will see them on Torrey Pines. Hitting the ball 120 feet in the air in a 2-club breeze isn't getting you anywhere but trouble over 18 holes, let alone 72 holes. You could easily have simulated this in the software. This review have way to much focus on speed.
guys... love the subject... huge fan of hybrids, extremely versatile and stops on a dime... would be great to see someone with a "normal" swing speed...
Great comparison. I'm looking for info like this as I want something between my 5 wood and longest iron. I watched a video where a Titleist fitter said your hybrid carry distance should be equal to your longest iron's total distance (roll out). Would you agree to that?
I have ping g425 driver and 5 wood, and stealth irons starting at 5 iron. Looking to add g425 hybrid (3 or 4). Ping website says 3 hybrid similar to 3 iron, 4 hybrid similar to 4 iron. But what iron lofts? Are they referring to g425 irons? Basic settings?
Good question. I have noticed that the 4 hybrid goes further than 4iron etc. However you do have +/- 1.5* adjustability to help with gapping. Based on your gap if your looking for 1 club in between the 5 wood and 5 iron. I would go with the 4hy - Thomas
Well here is what I have noticed recently,so my long irons 4,5 goes the same distances but I play KBS C-Taper 120 g stiff that is 1/2 inch shorter than standard. After looking at this video a few things I noticed my club speed is around mid 90s with the 4 iron but my ball speed is lower my smash is 1.28 and my angle of attack is -5.6 very steep. The steeper angle of attack is where my problem most likely lies. My carry with the 4 iron was on average 195.9 and total 212.8 using range balls not premium balls that I usually play. Anybody else have a similar issue with the long irons
I would keep testing. Hybrids will be more forgiving and provide better ball speed / spin retention of the ones you don't catch perfect. Just make sure you figure out the gapping as some hybrids can go quite a bit further - Thomas
I played an old Wilson 7 wood like 10 years ago when I first started playing. Once I became a better striker I liked the long irons more. Then I got a 2 iron and have been stuck on them ever since
Your reviews are always entertaining but not relevant to an average golfer or even a low handicap senior as Thomas’ speed is significantly greater that most of us.
@@currbag definitely like the idea! Sounds like you have the speed to carry the 5 iron appropriately. Do you not care for it? Or do you just prefer hitting hybrids
Thomas carrying a 4 hybrid 220!?! I nailed mine today and it carried a whopping 185, that’s 35 more yards of carry, cannot relate and I doubt most who watch this cannot either
Isn’t it more impressive that he carried 4 iron that distance as well?! The absolute longest I ever carried my 4 iron was pushing 200, but usually about 180-185. This guy’s speed is just incredible, I’d kill for it.
@@robertacierno2803 it is impressive that he can carry a 4 iron that far, I play with some players who can also carry 4 iron 215-220, it’s all about club head speed and ball speed
Tired of swinging a 4 iron and 5 iron with very heavy DG S300 steel shafts. Its exhausting. Love my 18, 21 and 24 degree hybrids. I can swing those light graphite shafts all day.
Into a wind you need the 4-iron. The side to side dispersion is greater for both the 5-hybrid and the 9-wood (23.5 degrees only...gotta be kidding me!). Also for small greens...so do not remove the 4-Iron from your bag if you are a single digit handicap or better. Now look at their data and get open-minded...imagine a 215 yard Par 3 with a big 30 yard diameter open and flat green...his DRAW takes the ball to the back of the green. the 9-wood lands well onto the green and stops just past the stick...great for the middle of the green. The 5-hybrid lands 9-10 feet past the front of the green and stops on the front half. Now if this guy FADES his 4-iron like on a Ben Hogan swing, he gets close for a 1-putt! That 18-yard run-out from 224 Carry to 242 Total yards on a DRAW is great for 3-tiered greens but on a Flat Small Green a Precise Fade is your shot! TOTAL RESPECT FOR BEN HOGAN!!!
Thanks for watching. That is the best takeaway and a higher landing angle and spin with hybrids or fairway woods can help golfers gap by carry distance better. - Thomas
let's see him hit that 4 iron consistently after walking a hilly course on a hot day. About half way through things change. You're now begging for a 9 wood and it's forgiveness.
Thanks for watching. Depending on the player that 4iron may fly even lower and be harder to stop on the green which is why a higher lofted fairway or hybrid is a good consideration. - Thomas
Diddo to the rest of the comments. Your swing speed is uncommon. Drop it down to a 10 handicapper and these vids will mean more. TXG has Matty boy swing opposite hand to demonstrate this. Love the vids just tweak them a bit please.
If you want these test to have any meaning, you really need someone hitting the shots that more closely resembles the real world... Most recreational players don't swing a driver at 113 MPH...

Love that, thanks for watching!!
Ive just put a 9-wood in, even with speed they work, 248 carry but really high and lots of greenside hold
Looks like I,m buying a 9 wood
Thanks, love my 7wood
When I started golfing.... like ages ago. It was normal for everyone to have a driver , 3 ,5 ,7. But the clubs in general had other lofts so it was easier to have those clubs.
Nowadays... with the stronger lofts makes it much harder to get all your lofts and spacings
Love the channel and I love my 7wood thanks
Just added a 7 wood to try out. Hitting the yardages is as looking for with ease. Now I'm thinking of adding the 9 wood to replace 5h4 5i 😂
Love it!! The 9-wood might be the perfect answer for those clubs too!
Great Job as always Thomas & Drew!!
Based on stopping power please rank the 3 clubs that you tested. All the BEST!
I just love hybrids, Got a 4 and a 5, no 5 iron or lower.
More forgiveness and launch than a traditional iron!
I really like these videos, helpful content.
What is the point of a club comparison aimed at average swing speed golfers performed by a player who hits his 4 iron 240 yards?
This isn't necessarily only aimed at average swing speed golfers -- this could be useful for anyone!
Great comparison. I'm looking for info like this as I want something between my 5 wood and longest iron. I watched a video where a Titleist fitter said your hybrid carry distance should be equal to your longest iron's total distance (roll out). Would you agree to that?
I love my 4 iron. It’s strong lofted at 21 degrees so I use a 3 hybrid to gap it between my 3 wood
Very nice! Thank you for watching!
Drew, is your dad’s name Andy, by chance? If so, I graduated high school with him in 1987. Great guy. Excellent video, by the way.
@@2ndswing Thank you very much! Enjoy your videos!
Gap to distance not to numbers on the club. Optimum height and max carry distance.
You got it!!
XXIO X 9 wood....amazing club,in my bag always
Thanks Thomas I will keep testing and find my ideal set up.
I played an old Wilson 7 wood like 10 years ago when I first started playing. Once I became a better striker I liked the long irons more. Then I got a 2 iron and have been stuck on them ever since
Nice but would like this repeated at 90-85 swing speed to see how they behave
Is 4 iron and 5 hybrid has the same loft?
They are pretty close but it will depend on the manufacturer. Some golfers replace their 4 iron with a 4 hybrid, others a 5 hybrid. - Thomas
I would consider 4h to be a more direct comparison.
Your reviews are always entertaining but not relevant to an average golfer or even a low handicap senior as Thomas’ speed is significantly greater that most of us.
Why did the club head speed increase so much. And, I love hitting my 9 wood!
Due to the weight and the length of the shaft- 9 wood if you need height and spin. It is so easy to hit - Thomas
Now do 5-iron vs 6-hybrid vs 11-wood.
I don't see why not
Callaway I think is the only company that consistently makes an 11-wood.
Just bought a Callaway 11 wood. Would love to see that video as well. I’m sure similar results but still curious! Love the videos
I’m going to a 7 wood. 21 degree hybrids don’t feel solid at impact.
I’m using a 3 hybrid in replacement of my 4 iron
Sounds like you would have a gapping issue there
@@jlog23 I’m not accurate usually anyway but it works out about 10-20 yards different between 5 iron and 3 hybrid
I have 4 hybrid with is my 230 club and then 3 wood with is 270-280 . Looking to get a 5 wood and a 5 hybrid to take the 5 iron out of the bag
@@currbag definitely like the idea! Sounds like you have the speed to carry the 5 iron appropriately. Do you not care for it? Or do you just prefer hitting hybrids
@@jlog23 I can defintely carry the 5 iron 210-215 but it's just so inconsistent as I don't trust it when I'm addressimg
@@donsmnc5319 100% about club speed and consistent strike. I gotta do more speed training to up my speed across the bag.
I carry my 4 hybrid 235
The 5-hybrid lands
9-10 feet past the front of the green and stops on the front half. Now if this guy FADES his 4-iron like on a Ben Hogan swing, he gets close
for a 1-putt! That 18-yard run-out from 224 Carry to 242 Total yards on a DRAW is great for 3-tiered greens but on a Flat Small Green a Precise Fade is your shot! TOTAL RESPECT FOR BEN HOGAN!!!
The average clubhead speed for a decent golfers driver is 95 mph. You're hitting a 9w at 102. How are we 95% supposed to relate?
ELEPHANT
in the room they did not talk about.
9w had the best dispersion
despite rarely being hit by the fitter.
I thought he was supposed to have a negative attack angle
A 24º 4 iron ??? All mine dating back 10 years or more over 5 different sets, the 4 irons are all 20-21º.
The loft on the club isn't as important as the center of gravity of the club
You are giving advice to 95% of all golfers using someone who hits like 5%. Need to make major changes.
Never got fitted for my woods and it shows.... 😭
The reason is lofts are getting too strong on irons
Thanx guys!! Really informative video again!!💪🏻
Thanks for watching and staying with us - Thomas
9 wood will be a huge advantage out of thick rough
“Gap by carry distance.” 100. Keep it simple. Whatever works.
Thanks for watching. That is the best takeaway and a higher landing angle and spin with hybrids or fairway woods can help golfers gap by carry distance better. - Thomas
220 carry 4 iron? Dude's a beast.
let's see him hit that 4 iron consistently after walking a hilly course on a hot day. About half way through things change. You're now begging for a 9 wood and it's forgiveness.
Center of Gravity will make that 9 wood pretty easy to hit straight - Thomas
TURN UP YOUR VOLUME.
220 + 20 yards of carry from a 4 iron. Jeez.
Thanks for watching. Depending on the player that 4iron may fly even lower and be harder to stop on the green which is why a higher lofted fairway or hybrid is a good consideration. - Thomas
I keep hearing high-bird
Diddo to the rest of the comments. Your swing speed is uncommon. Drop it down to a 10 handicapper and these vids will mean more. TXG has Matty boy swing opposite hand to demonstrate this. Love the vids just tweak them a bit please.
Thank you for the suggestion! We will keep that in mind moving forward. We appreciate it!
If you want these test to have any meaning, you really need someone hitting the shots that more closely resembles the real world... Most recreational players don't swing a driver at 113 MPH...
Thanks for your feedback. We have a few different contributors with different swing speeds on many videos - Thomas
🟢 I have a 7 wood in the bag since 2002 🤗 tried a forged 5 hybrid which felt fantastic but did not give my the same distance and height ❌ I need so it has been sold 🙀 and the 7 wood 😻 is back in the bag ✅
