  • Today, Mikey is testing out a newly built 7 wood to compare to his current T200 4 iron.
    Long irons vs fairway woods. It is a topic often discussed when selecting which tools will be most beneficial on the course. Will Mikey make the permanent switch to a launch assisted 7 wood?

    7 wood is a winner for me. And I'm reasonably high club head speed (110--115 w/ driver). Found my 4 iron was really just a useful when punching out of trees. I never used it off the tee, and it was much harder to hit from most other lies than 7w, and 7w just goes where you want it to go. Mishits with the 4i were much more erratic.

    • @DrDaveYT
      @DrDaveYT 7 месяцев назад +1

      What do you use at the top of your bag otherwise? The end of the last season I was testing using my 21* hybrid over a 4 iron with a 15* 3w and an 18* 5w. Just wondering how people are building the top of their bags with 7w.

      @slambike 6 месяцев назад

      @@DrDaveYT I just got fitted for clubs. About 105 clubbed on driver, so not a very fast player. New driver was going about 260 carry. My 4 iron is about 200-205. So I wanted a 240 club and a 220 club. The g430 lft (slightly higher loft) 3 wood got me that 240 and the standard g430 7 wood hit that 220 number dead on. I tried a 3 hybrid but it really only got 215 and was not nearly as consistent. The 7 wood felt like it hit itself.

    • @eriksvideos6022
      @eriksvideos6022 5 месяцев назад

      One thing I like about 7 wood is you can choke down and/or take partial swings but still get the height to make the shot work. It makes it a flexible club for hitting a variety of distances. The disadvantage, of course, is when you're playing in very windy conditions. But even then, it's only a problem with the wind directly in your face.

  • @MichaelFrederickPhoto

    I game a 4W & 7W, fantastic combo as easier to get off the deck than a 3W-5W combo. I got a like new 21* 7w with a lady’s shaft for $21 at 2nd Swing, swapped the shaft into it. Worked great. I wanted a 235 off the tee/225 off the deck club, perfect for it !

    Big proponent of the Callaway Heavenwood 🔥 I switched out of a 3 hybrid to a 5 wood a couple of years ago after watching your videos to get more height and stability in my shots. Realized that I missed having a hybrid/rescue and was struggling to hit my 4i, so got a 4 hybrid. Then, 5W started flying lower than my 3W and tested out 7Ws. They went high but were going shorter than the 4H. Tried out a Heavenwood, and it definitely is heaven 🙌🏽

  • @jmac_619

    If I was consistently hitting out of the fairway, I'd 100% have a 7 wood in the bag. Since I'm not...I go Driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid (19*), 4 hybrid (22*) (Ping G425's) and dropped the 4 iron. Best decision I could've made even though I'm a young single digit handicapper. If you can find a hybrid you love, they are lethally versatile. There is no reason to have a 4 iron in the bag anymore, unless you're a scratch or plus HC golfer, using it to it's absolute full potential.

    • @winstonsmith11
      @winstonsmith11 7 месяцев назад

      Totally agree. I'm also a young(ish) low single digit, and I took out the 4 iron last year for a hybrid. I'll never go back. Like you said, unless you're highly skilled, and have tons of speed, the long irons are pointless. In fact, I'm taking the 5 iron out this coming year, too. I'm very comfortable with my longest iron being a 6.

    • @thebikepackingadventurer
      @thebikepackingadventurer 7 месяцев назад

      @@winstonsmith11 my longest iron is a 6 iron strong loft though so closer to a 5 iron. then I have a 7 wood, 4 hybrid, 3 wood and driver. I find the 4 hybrid is a good fairway finder or low fight shot and 7 wood great out of rough or long shots stopping on greens. I play off 4.3 WHS and having the 7 wood and 4 hybrid opened up my scoring heavily

    • @_bstr_ct1832
      @_bstr_ct1832 7 месяцев назад +2

      I’m the other way completely. Can’t get on with any hybrids, especially from any kind of rough. 4 iron for me is so so reliable that I’ve been testing the matching 3 iron, trying to replace my 19* 3 hybrid.

    • @thebikepackingadventurer
      @thebikepackingadventurer 7 месяцев назад

      @@_bstr_ct1832 I would definitely go for a fitting or lesson on those clubs then, as no 3/4 iron is easier to hit than a more forgiving wood. I’ve seen some people have their shaft far too long on woods though as well

    • @jmac_619
      @jmac_619 7 месяцев назад

      @@_bstr_ct1832 Totally understand, that’s why I said “if you can find a hybrid you love”. It was quite the journey, but the Ping hybrids in their flat lie angle setting eliminates the hooks most people get. I get the hooks with woods (except 3 wood, which I only use off the tee) and not hybrids, so that’s why I’m on the hybrid train, plus it helps me with great shots from less than ideal lies in the trees. I didn’t become a single digit HC until I took that 4 iron out.

    I remember when Johnny Miller won his last PGA event, at Pebble Beach, he used a 7 wood, a lot. He’s such a shot maker and he put on a clinic with that club. He hit a shot into the wind on that par 3 where Nicklaus hit a 1 iron years ago. He hooded that 7 wood and hit a low shot under a howling wind to lock up the win. Very useful club.

      @dennisjefferson2052 Yes partially. I had a 4-5 hybrid. My 5h (26*) flies around 185 carry. But my 4h (23*) was only carrying around 190 and rolling out further than I wanted. I’m no Mikey, will be 83 in June. But have played for over 60 years and still use forged blades with traditional lofts 34 degree 7 iron. It became painfully clear over the past 4 or 5 years that I no longer had the swing speed you need to get the proper height and descent angle as well as carry and gaps between my 3, 4 and 5 irons. My 31 degree 6 iron was really the last one I could use. That’s equivalent to a TM P790 or Ping i530 7 iron. So in 2022 I added a Callaway Epic Max 21 degree 7W and last year a Callaway Paradym 9W. They replace the 3,4 and 5 irons. For me, the 7W is for 160-175 yard shots and the 9W for 150-165 depending on wind, etc. They have helped tremendously with approach shots and par 3s. Also great for getting out of the rough alongside fairways. Since my 6 iron is really a 135-140 yard club, there is a bit too much gap with the 9W that may widen a bit more as I get better with the 9W, so my next change might be an 11W or a similarly lofted hybrid, making 7 my longest iron. BTW, though I am a super senior who realized he needed help, what convinced me that 7 woods and 9 woods were for serious players was learning that the mighty Dustin Johnson had both in the bag. He could hit the same distance with a 2 iron or driving iron, but the woods gave him the height and descent angle needed to make the ball stop on small, hard and fast greens. So agree, have Mikey also demo 9 woods.

I have also NEVER gotten along with any hybrid or utility iron long term except for my Gen 6 PXG but it tended to be to low spin at times. I can do anything I need to with this 7 wood. I had been toying with the idea of a 7 wood for a few years but never pulled the trigger as I never could find one to demo with a shaft in the weight and profile range I like. One lucky business trip to Dallas and I'm a 7 wood convert for life.

    7w has been the biggest bandaid for my game. I’m about 114 driver ss and my 7w has been a birdie machine for me going into par 5s in that 225-245 distance. Made birdie from 234 uphill over trees last weekend. A shot I would have 100% laid up on without that club

    My 5 wood hits greens at 235 yards. My 3 wood hits greens at 255 yards away. My 6 iron gets good height at almost 90 feet. Should probably get an instructor to get more height on my long irons.

    Wondering if Mike’s arm length is a bit longer than his height. That might explain why he prefers the shorter shafted FWs and hybrids.

    I took my 3-wood out of the bag at least 5-6 years ago and replaced it with a 16.5* 4-wood that is 42.25” long. About the same time, I added a 7-wood to my arsenal (21*, which I have since adjusted down to 20* loft), and 41” playing length). After about 4.5 to 5 years of use, I cracked the carbon crown on that adjustable 7-wood, and although I repaired the cracked crown with some high-impact epoxy it has never been the same! I have tried 2 or 3 other 7-woods, plus a 20* “utility wood” in search of a suitable replacement and the search continues. I just recently bought a new Tour Edge Exotics E723 7-wood, and hope to give it an initial test run this week if the weather cooperates. Hopefully, this will be “the one”!
    For the vast majority of mid-handicap golfers (as well as some low-cappers like Mikey), a 7-wood, or a similarly lofted “utility wood” with it’s shorter shaft length, can be one of the best clubs to have in their bags.

    Ditched my 3 wood about a year ago went to ping g 430 sft 5&7 wood. I’m 75 yrs young I’m not a big hitter 7 wood 175 yds 5 wood 190yds but they are so easy to launch and constantly hit these numbers. I am being fitted for g430 irons as a Xmas gift from wife 6 iron up and I’m seriously thinking of 9 wood to fill the gap maybe hybrid but fitter thinks 9 wood is a no brainer maybe ask son to fund it for my Xmas. Should have said I play west coast Scotland and these woods hold up against the wind brilliantly

    Went G425 3w/5w/7w this past summer. So much better than the PXG's I had been bagging. 3w especially. High and long. The 7w I can hit 170.5w is about 190. 3w maybe 210 on a good strike. Not hitting wipey, slicey fairways now. Got me down to mid 80's. Need a better short game. Stop the 2 pitches to get on from 50 yards. The occasional 3 putt. These add 6-8 strokes a round.

    My current bag setup is driver, 3w, 5w, 4i but have been contemplating going to driver, 4w, 3h, 4i. I love my 5w, but rarely hit the 3w off the deck as it is sometimes spot on and sometimes in the crapper! Thinking 4w gives me the best of both worlds and having a 3h to help with the gapping and ease from trouble with distance. Thoughts?

      I do the same. My home course is known for afternoon winds here in Rockies and there are no 230-245 forced carries. My 19* hybrid allows very high, soft approaches but it tends to spin up more than I like for my home course. I carry it when we travel and I need those long approaches onto small and/or firm greens. While I’m more confident w/my U84 20* utility, when I need a higher, softer landing, I have to hit a cut-fade which then costs me 10-15 yds. My biggest issue with my hybrid is my dispersion which is not as consistent as utility iron. It goes straight maybe 50-60% of time but my misses are either a little left to way left, especially when I really jump on it. Not blaming the club as it’s the chef, not the utensil, just that the hybrid margin for my errors are lesser than with my U84 iron.
      I do not carry a 5 or 7 wood as again, higher is not better at my home course and I’m not as capable shaping shots w/fw clubs than I am w/hybrid and especially my utility irons. Fw woods are more one-trick pony, a 19* is also more a 5W as I play my TSi3 3W at 16.5*.
