  • As an apology for letting some people down with my hot takes on the original Ridge Racer, I'm taking a look at Rage Racer. The first truly great Ridge Racer game.

    My favorite RR game ever. The logo edit was ground-breaking for its day. I think I made about 25 different logos with matching body color schemes. Good times.

    Rage Racer OST went so hard. Grade “?” was brutal as a kid.

    Regarding the drift aspect of the game, people assume it's heavier, but if you let the drift do itself, it becomes a lot easier to handle and pull off. Unlike other games where it expects you to "drift" with the game, Rage Racer assumes any extra input in the drift to be a part of your input, which then makes you over or understeer the drift. The best way to drift is to initiate the drift, then don't do any inputs until you need to get out of the drift. If the drift setting is at a minimum, even letting go of the gas whilst not fully forward will initiate a drift, usually spinning you out a bit, so it's very sensitive compared to other games. It is also to note that the game is really sluggish when playing automatic, which tends to be an issue when you get to cup 4 onwards. Drifting also becomes significantly easier when you can help yourself out of a drift by gearing down out of it, making you regain control quicker with cars like Lizard cars

    I never understood the people who disliked Rage Racer. It was a HUGE step above Ridge Racer and Revolution in regards to gameplay. They also made it exciting adding a real face to look forward to (our Queen)

    While this game doesn't control as well as Type 4, it still has an amazing soundtrack and an unique aesthetic so I would consider it a decent game even if it can feel dated to play. Can't wait to see what you think of Type 4 since I did recently 100% it.

    • @gamernaut8864
      @gamernaut8864 Год назад +2

      Woah nice! 100% Type 4. A brutal task in my opinion. I could never bring myself to grind through the Grand Prix over and over and over finishing each race in all the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place combinations in order to unlock every variation of the 60+ car models. The thought of it actually kinda pissed me off that the devs designed the game this way. I would have rather had all available car variants in the series be unlocked if you place 1st in every race. Good job. Any pro tips? lol

    • @BerserkerRohan
      @BerserkerRohan Год назад +1

      @@gamernaut8864 It does feel like quite the grind especially near the grind so I can understand why you think it is very brutal and I do agree that you should have got all the cars for placing 1st.
      As for tips, I think I followed a strict order of unlocking the cars to make it easier for me to remember what I have already unlocked and what I need to unlock. I also unlocked everything for DiG early since once that is done, everything else is pretty simple to unlock by comparison except for those devil cars. If it does start feeling like a grind, having a video or podcast in the background can help.

      I don't know. I found 1 very derivative and dated, and 2 to be either too easy or too hard depending on the stage. I do see the appeal, especially visually, I just didn't find them fun.

    I really enjoyed the time I had with Rage Racer, Great music, great race tracks, the only gripe I have with the game is the actual driving. I found that grip based cars tends to perform much better than the drift cars and the end game races were hard as hell. Other than that it's a really fun game.

    So I got my hands on the game and the drifting isn’t bad. You just have to adjust the car’s grip. It like grip/dynamic drifting in R6 and R7. With full drift tires, you drift about any car. But with grippier tires, it harder to enter a drift but easier to straighten out afterwards. A surprisingly neat mechanic for a 96’ racer.

    I'll be honest and say this right now. Ridge racer 6 is my favorite ridge racer game to me. But that is only because it is the only one I have played but I am planning on getting a ps3 this Christmas and perhaps I may get ridge racer 7. Do you have an opinion on RR 6/7 slayercoon?

  • @THENAMEISQUICKMAN
    @THENAMEISQUICKMAN 2 года назад +1

    Honestly, I don't really like this game at all compared to the other three on the PlayStation. If there's one thing Ridge Racer didn't fit, it was a "gritty/edgy" style. If you look at RR1 and 2 as arcade games then they're perfectly acceptable, but I just don't enjoy this game as either an arcade game or a console game. The music is a total mixed bag, I don't care for the metal at all (I love metal, but it's not Ridge Racer) while the drum'n'bass and jungle tracks are some of the best in the entire series and a great choice to be a little bit more hardcore without fully distancing itself from the electronic genre pool. I do wish RR had more of that stuff.

    Loved everything about the game exept the controls. RR is all about drift In other Ridge Racer games you could feel better when you oversteer or understeer. here you get none of that the car will just start/end drift and catapult you right to the wall and you get really punished when exiting the drift with often huge speed loss. Also major flaw is lack of gradual sensitivity. you either nudge the car or make heavy turn there is no gradual turning that is why it feels very stiff compared to other rr games. Its immposible to play with back camera due to them. your car hitbox is bigger than accual car so you are bound to hit something constantly. Esspecialy other cars later on. tracks feels to narrow for controls that have no preccision.

    Rage Racer was pretty good. I think this was considered as the black sheep before Unbounded was because of the drifting, which was more difficult to do than the RR games before it. The cars also felt slower and heavier as well, which made the game less aracady compared to the other games in the series, besides R: Racing Evolution. But nonetheless, it was a good game overall.

  • @karelpipa

    5:20 driftinh is quite ease and very rewarding once you kinda know what you are doing. Much more pleasing experience than RRT4. And you could always choose grip car instead.
