That was super useful! Very easy to follow and I really like how you show the same process several times while using different objects: it really helps to get a good understanding on how the modifier works!
Anybody having problems with it not bending correctly and looking like a bow-tie? Here's how to fix it.. Make sure that the object you are trying to bend is going along the 'X' axis and not the 'Y' axis. So make sure that the length of the thing you're trying to bend is going along the 'X' axis. Rotate the object, on Z, by 90 degrees so it's going down that axis and try again. Blender seems to be very picky about this. I used 3DS Max for 19 year but recently came over to Blender and had to work this out lol.
Damn I was about to start learning Max because of this damned so called "Simple" deform modifier. Actually you have to keep in mind that he you want to bend along X you need to choose Z in modifier options and vice versa.
Let's say I have a simple flat cube extrusion in the shape of 12 inches in length, .25 inches wide, and .125 in thickness..basically long flat strip of material and I need to 'twist' it 3 times in the middle only about total of 1" worth of 'twists"...so flat for certain length, twist 3 times, and then return to flat for the remainder....any thoughts? thanks
C'est assez bizarre, peu importe les Ctrl-A, la commande fonctionne autour du Z, mais si on essaye de refaire exactement de la même façon, mais le long des autres axes, ça part en sucette total...
Hello, thank for your video ! But like some people below, bend doesn't work at all, IF I don't rotate the empty, 90 degrés, sometimes along the X, sometimes along the Y, no matter the axis I choose in the modifier, if the empty and the the object have their local axis the same the global, it's always wrong. I don't understand how it works... I tried to change the order of the stack, to apply the other modifiers, I'm never able to get a predictable result... Apologize my poor English, and enjoy Blender !
@@TheCGEssentials Glad you take time to lokk at the comments, and to answer :) Yep, even if I'm far far away from your proficiency with that marvellous software, I know a few, and forget to apply is the first mistake beginners do, but that's not the case here... I really don't understand...
I don't know if the developers changed something, but I can't for the life of me recreate your results with the bend deform. All that I get is that wierd bowtie- looking result like at 4:56. I've tried bending around an empty exactly like you did, I've subdivided the mesh a ton, I've tried every axis possible. I can't get it to do what you did with the bench.
@@TheCGEssentials Yup, I did exactly what you did, where I used the 3D curser to place it. Then I tried all of the axis options. All with similar results
Any ideas how to do things like this in blender 2.9? Unfortunately all the tutorial videos on youtube is for older versions and none of them works (literally)
Followed this to the T and first time it worked perfect. Wasn't happy with one point on the curve so did another!!! Not been able to make it work since following each step carefully. It ends up looking like an X no matter what I do. "Reset Scale" - still don't work, Move 3D cursor - still don't work, Checked axis pointing right way - still don't work, tried around x then y then z - still don't work, whole new document and start from scratch - still don't work!!! Seems to happen a lot to me in Blender, Do it once and great. Try it again!!.....
I don't understand why you started the intro of the lesson videos with a tone of voice that sounded like you were going to commit murder. Other than that, thank you for the videos...
Good morning everyone! Let me know if you have any questions about the simple deform modifier in the comments below! :)
you must really adore Bonnie :)
Hands down, the scariest intros of any tutorial series
Thanks CG, I was actually able to utilize this! That doesn't always happen with Blender videos.

Yes, Omg this was the only tutorial I could find that actually used and empty to help fix the taper I was trying to create, Thankyou
Thank you, I finally got it to work! That empty is great!
Awesome!
Life saver bro thank you, always showing awesome simple and practical examples!
Thank you so much! been looking for a tutorial like this for so long!!! showed me exactly what I needed!
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks CG Essentials, good stuff. I was coming from 3dsMax to Blender and couldnt find how to taper. Thanks! Now I know!
Awesome - glad it helped! :)
Great Tutorial!
The video I been looking for 😊
you sir, congratulations!!!!
great tutorial
saved on my Blender playlist :)
:)
BEST blender tutorials. Muy agreements
Thank you! :)
Sir, love from Pakistan❤
Great tutorial! I love how you make sure to explain every edge case so people don't get lost along the way. Really ups the total quality of the video!
Empty isn't so empty after all lol. Thanks worked great!👍
Lol - glad you liked it!
So useful. Thank you

It sucks , I spent a lot of time just to understand that bending system , and thnx it's worked
man thanks a lot you saved me.
I sent soooo much time trying to do it.
Thank you!
It has been 3 years but this comment aged like a good wine. THANK YOU!
nice thanks a lot!!! Exactly what I needed :D
Glad I could help!

how did you do the ear? I am trying to that bend but it is hard for me

Make sure you've applied any rotations, scales, etc to your objects in object mode before using the modifier

Sorry to bother you again but is it safe to UVW unwrap your models THEN apply modifiers when using bend or will it distort the UVW map?

This is what I'd expect with the wrong axis selected. Is your empty in the right location?

@@TheCGEssentials I ended up using the curve modifier instead, so it worked out okay
Andrew P. Roberts yeah that’s exactly my problem it just turn into these weird double sided triangle things
@@NightmareTrash88 Same here, no way to obtain the same result on the video
i followed all steps re did them 100 times and still same result as your first attempt this method doesn't seem to work any help would be awesome

I don't think this has changed in 2.9...
No difference actually..
@@MikeMike-wc8on well there is but never mind I moved on 😄
not able to play video, and if it plays then only 360p resolution
Weird - I'm having the same issue and have no clue why - this is an issue on RUclips's end I think...

Sorted... this action doesn't look at the axis the way we do when rotating. Rotating the object sorted me until i saw the bend going as planned
Sadly this method doesn't really work well with sci-f panels. Panels that are meant to remain at a straight and just become distorted.
Why would you need to bend panels that are meant to remain straight?
Nevermind I worked out what to do...
Having to make sure your object lies is along the X Axis first before you try any of the modifier properties... just defies logic.
I don't understand why you started the intro of the lesson videos with a tone of voice that sounded like you were going to commit murder. Other than that, thank you for the videos...
This isn't working for me i don't understand why
I'd need more info than this
The CG Essentials I followed each and every step, but it dint bend. No clue why
Now I can't play This video something wrong with this
Works fine for me - sounds like a problem with your pc or internet connection
