The fact that these are so similar is almost scary, like TT looked at Savant when engineering the design, lol.
They are the same character based on the same figure
I was getting ready to order the XTransbots Skids when they announced the impending MP. Glad I waited! I love the Takara one!
The Honda City Turbo (with the hood bump) didn't come with the MotoCompo bike, so that's probably why TT opted out of it for MP Skids. I believe it had a sportier suspension which intruded upon the cabin interior and restricted usable space. It did come as an option for the City and City R trimlines, though.
XTB sorta goofed by not making Skids a Turbo with the hood bump like the G1 toy, but then XTB is more toon accurate in this regard.
And I think they also may have done that in order to justify throwing in the MotoCompo bike.
On a side note, something I always laughed about the G1 Tech Spec for this guy was a line that he wasn't very fast, but then it said that he left gigantic skidmarks whenever slamming on the brakes at 500mph! He's even named "Skids", which implies he is known for such skidmarks, which means that he must be known for such speeds. 🤪
I just nabbed an XTB Savant off Ebay for $65, $78 with S&T.
Good catch as I was wondering why myself. I had to acetate go took at both Skids and Reboost to make sure. As for me, I went with the X-transbots Taiho, their take on You're Under Arrest redeco.

Thanks for the warnings on breakage for the X-Transbots. I have had my Chopshop for two years and never had any problems or signs of stress in the shoulders or the door but I will be watching it and being extra careful there.
I never had any looseness issues over time that you mentioned. That said I love this Bot so much.
EDIT: I am glad I have my X-Transbots. I like it better based on the review. I love his weight and I think his articulation is way better and that really matters to me. I also like in car mode how there is that metal stip at the bottom of the car that connects the car front to back even when the doors are open. Also the interior in the front of the car including the actual seats just looks better.

I got the XTB version of Reboost, aka Staunch from bbts for around $42. I cant find the official mp anywhere for a good price and I always wanted a figure from XTB.
I totally agree with you on the motocompo and I'll do you one better: They should have included the diaclone figure.
Takara's MP Skids is clearly a mix of toon and toy aesthetic, with the wheel-shoulders and the overall design being accurate to both, but the headlights taking more inspiration from the cartoon and the grill being inspired by the toy.
The diaclone figure would have been equally suited to Skids as it is to Reboost. Heck they could have sculpted it to look like Charlene.
The Takara is just odd with their current line. I really think the design is old and from the time where they were not being ultra toon accurate styling especially compared to their recent releases

So the XTB one has the same issue as both the Takara & KO MP Datsuns: the door hinges are break bait. That sucks, big time.
Meanwhile, I still look forward to Takara doing the obligatory Crosscut repaint of Reboost. Not sure why they didn't just do that to begin with, though.

Great Review. I think TakaraTomy knows a lot of people doesn't buy repaints, so they included the scooter with Reboost to force you to buy it. Just curious, does the scooter fits inside Skids as well? If it does, I can see third parties will take advantage of that. :)

Awesome Comparo TM...love your work. As much as I want to give a 👏 and $ to Takara...Xtransbots has this WON from 2 years ago. The only thing TK done better is the Price and it's still a tie, Everything else Xtransbots did it better 2 years ago.

Great comparison. They switched the paint jobs on the TT figures. I love die cast, but not if it breaks the figure. Deal breaker for me. Haha. Also, I think it's worth mentioning the alt. mode scaling is better on TT.
Yeah I prefer the smaller alt mode on Takara personally
I like that as well. That is the only factor that really bums me out. I like the easier transformation too. That said I don't like the plastic tires l, the bad leg articulation, or the faux rear of the car for the back of the legs.
Good review. I was planning on doing a head to head review of the 2 as I was curious of what the differences are between them. I know the XTB one came out almost 3 years sooner and it's good to see it held it's own. I think you meant to say the XTB version was larger and not the Takara version. I am curious if that is the correct scale of the Honda City vehicle, which Skids is based off of, in comparison to the other MP cars like BB and a Datsun. I know the bump on the hood was also accurate for the City vehicle it's based on, so it may have been a requirement from Honda to get the license, but I don't really know. I feel this is one time that Cartoon accuracy isn't really something I want in Robot or Vehicle mode except the color palette. My biggest issue with the XTB one is the build quality. This was the last transforming XTB figure I plan on buying...but we'll see after their Perceptor and Magnus come out if I will give them one last chance on their P/CP versions. I think this is the first review I have watched of yours and first comment. My only critique would be a size comparison next to another MP figure, in this case an Autobot like BB, OP or Datsun. For me, the X-Transbot is worthless to get because I already have the MP Skids and Reboost... Then I saw the police version of the X-Transbot and now I have the perfect excuse to get that mold.
I’ll stick to my XTB, not enough of an upgrade from TT and I do love my diecast / metallic paint but I would be lying if I said TT isn’t tempting due to the proportions
I got the TT and I really don't like the way the shoulders are mounted. When you turn the arms 90 degrees at the shoulder you can really tell the connection is mounted too low.

Also XTB head sculpt is more G1 cartoon accurate than TT

Both are not bad. The takara should have darker windows i think there is too much blue. And the other the chest is a little big. But still nice figures
For me, I prefer takara because of the vehicle mode and i guess the overall "aesthetic". I've missed realistic vehicle modes in masterpiece, and now we have one. On top of that, we also get a pretty somewhat realistic looking robot mode, like a modern g1 design.
I also prefer the TT vehicle

I think I would pick the official one if I had to choose one. The QC issues would piss me off and take the fun out of the X-Transbot.

Vehicle mode looks far better on the Transbots version.

TT destroys the X-Transbots in my opinion.
Not including the motorbike accessory with the official MP Skids is probably one of the dumbest moves from Takara. I don't know how they make decisions on things. Did they think Reboost was going to sell better than Skids? Were they just penny pinching for Skids even though they already were including it with Reboost? Makes no sense.
Skids never ever had the bike That is why in the toy Line the diaclone versions did. But Hasbro never brought it over. Plus Was never in the show or comics That is also why. They were going for cartoon accuracy. When I got g1 crosscut 20 years ago he came with the scooter. G1 skids never, ever did.
Savant out of the box does not have a face. I managed to trade for the fixed one that came with a stunticon but That is unacceptable.

I hate Takara Tomy's inaccurate blue windshield and windows. Looks cheap.
We need an official TakaraTomy Masterpiece G1 Skids version 2.0 mold where he is G1 cartoon model-accurate. TakaraTomy ALMOST did a good job on Masterpiece G1 Skids version 1.0. I love TakaraTomy, but they need to put a lot more love, thought, creativity and accuracy into their Masterpiece Transformers figures.
C’mon man mp-53 is a design much more like the older mp aesthetic and design philosophy, you can’t be saying that it ain’t an accurate, loving, or thoughtful.
It transforms just like a more mature g1 skids, and the designer has a city turbo as well!
