Mazdaspeed Miata Turbo Review : OEM boosted Miata

- This week we take a look at a 2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5, aka the Mazdaspeed Miata.
This model of Miata interestingly does not say "Miata" anywhere on it. It was sold during an era of The Fast and The Furious as well as Mazda trying to standardize their model naming strategy. The Miata loving public revolted at the idea that the car would be henceforth known only as "MX-5" (Or in this case Mazdaspeed MX-5) and subsequent later models saw the return of the Miata logo to the car, and often times the inclusion of MX5 such as calling it the Miata MX-5.
In this Mazdaspeed Miata review we take a look at how it was factory tuned to be OEM aftermarket, perform a point of view drive, and tell some history of the car. We also touch on some of the nice features included such as the red valve cover, the oil cap, the rear view mirror, Mazdaspeed specific body kit, and the failings of the oem computer.
This Miata is the only factory turbo Miata to ever be sold by Mazda. In later years Mazda would make mention that this was a childish model and a mistake never to be repeated. That change in position from Mazda has cemented this car as truly special and forever unique as the only factory tuner turbo Miata in existence.

Turbocharged from the factory, smog legal, upgraded suspension, limited edition.... It probably is the Holy Grail 😳 of Miata's. Especially from a collectors perspective.
It's pretty much a turn key weekend track car, I've been tracking my 2004 MSM. In stock form my, MSM is pretty competitive even in stock trim.
couldnt agree more, the MSM is the ultimate miata in our eyes. You are wise sir.
Great channel, guys. Good luck with it. Cheers!
Thanks so much for the love brother!
Currently in the process of swapping my engine bc mile spun bearings, love the cinematography!, can’t wait to be cruising with it again
Ahhhh that sucks, are you putting forged pistons/rods while you are at it? Thanks for the compliment, we put a lot of effort into editing
Excellent points all around! I've had my '04 for about 12 years and it is an absolute gem. I kept it stock for too long though. I recently put on the Little Enchilada kit by Flyin' Miata; Now the car is absolutely psychotic! Woooosh PFFT!
The little enchilada probably wakes it up really nicely!! Can't beat sweet turbo sounds, always so pleasing to hear. Glad you are enjoying yours they are great cars!
Good review - just bought one for the track. A fully built one coming to the channel soon for a review 🤙👊
Nice! We love some mazdaspeed miata content
The Miata Speed factory burnt down in 2005 .... I bought one in 2005 .... The window sticker was $26500 .....
Do you still have it? They are more rare because of that incident certainly.
@@CarGuyFridays Yes mine became a 2nd car after I bought an electric car in 2011 .... It just has 17000 miles on it ...
My boi put the most exclusive Miata on blast
They are becoming rare brother, apparently a bunch of people hate the MSM but we still think its cool.
GReddy typeS, such a good sound!!!
YES!!!
Love driving my miat top down
That's the only way I want to drive it lol
my neibor had one, we traded cars one weekend when i had my 99 cobra vert. man i would always ask when you selling that thing?! it was so fun.... he never sold it...haha
I haven't either!
My MSM is in storage and this is making me miss it so much...
Just storage for the winter? Spring can't arrive soon enough!
@@CarGuyFridays storage during the pandemic 😢😫😫😖
Oh man, the msm can't get covid and backroads are social distancing!
@@CarGuyFridays I get it out the garage in a week!!! Re-registering it finally. Been away...
Great news!!! Find a nice day and put some miles on it for us!
this was neat
Thanks, were glad you liked it
I'm still confused my Mazda didn't used the VVT head on the Mazdaspeed. Probably would have let the car spool 200 rpm lower.
If I had to guess it came down to engineering effort and time on a model that was at the end of its life cycle.
Why mazda didnt choose a turbo that spooled faster is the real question to ask. For its size, it spools very slowly. They could have easily gotten 200rpm out of a different snail with the same ultimate power potential. Maybe there was a sale that quarter :)
My 2005 MSM just turned 150,000 but looks brand new practically and to my knowledge is bone stock with AC
heck yea, thats awesome. If you take care of a miata it will take care of you, legendary cars for sure.
2004 saw 4000 and 2005 was a bit over 1400 due to the factory burning down. TiG gang FTW!!!
Awesome thanks for the info we knew they were in very limited numbers
Just got one
Enjoy! Mines going strong still
How do I acquire one of these unicorns?
I see them for sale periodically. Do a search for 2004 or 2005 miatas. They tend to pop up when searching those years. Good luck!
Where can I get this type s blow off for my msm?
It's a genuine GReddy type S. You can still find them new old stock and there are companies that make knock offs. But the real thing always sounds and works much better.
@@CarGuyFridays that’s great to hear they are still available but where is the most reliable place to find them
Check out used ones on ebay, but make sure its genuine. They can also be found on yahoo auctions japan as used jdm gear
@@CarGuyFridays thank you so much just need to figure out what’s a solid price for them
Typically used 100-150, new if you find one probably 250+.
diamond hands hodl forever my 04 msm
