This is obviously not supposed to be serious "Trek Anime" with adult themes. This was a fun romp with a moral set in the Trek universe. I'm looking forward to more.
I agree with everything except the morals bit. The female ensign is drunkenly swinging a bat'leth around on a Starfleet ship with impunity and seriously cuts open the male ensign's leg. Her morality and values here are pretty nonexistent or at least unaligned to those of the Federation.
@@Retrohertz I wouldn't be so quick to conflate "morals" with "duty". At least that's my read. Also people don't become blue zombies, immediately eating people, and go back to normal in 5 seconds I presume. So, its a cartoon and I accept that.
@CW I thought it was fun, and I consider myself a pretty serious Trek fan. If you didn't like it, thats fine too. To me its no different than disguising a courtroom procedural in Trek episode "Measure of a Man". Why call that episode Trek? It was a courtroom procedural.

true Borg are the classic George A. Romero slow moving unyielding threat...the ones in this episode were more like 28 days later fast paced rage infected kind of zombies
@@amazedsatsuma That's true. I'll try this one more time, after this, I give up. The Borg (aka zombies) already exist within Star Trek. That's how Star Trek could add an element of horror, and have a reliable antagonist make repeated appearances. To add a zombie virus into the ST mythos when they added zombies in TNG, is just lazy storytelling.
I totally love. Star trek lower decks i see my self as Ensign Brad Biolmmer as Blue. medical. I love this i grew up animayed series tng voyager and enterprise.
I love dang near everything about Lower Decks. It's such a nice break from all the WARRRRRRRRR! of modern Trek (which I also love) My only complaint is that, being animated, they can get away with a lot more than live action, especially violence. I don't want my kids to see people dismembered. Other than that, it's a great show to enjoy with my 7 and 5 year olds
I'd say to just keep going. I liked season 1 after the first two or three episodes, but season 2 it becomes just an all-around stronger show. The writers start focusing a lot more into the plots and characters and letting the comedic moments happen naturally rather than being forced like tended to happen early on
The Orville is great. It's boring at first but it will grow on you. Some of the humor is really subtle. I wish it'd come back on TV again since now that Brandon mentions multiple seasons I am not sure if I have seen them all.
Orville just say no! It doesn't improve in season 2 in fact is get so bad I removed it from my HULU line up. Hit that do not like button. But it's still not as bad as this Star Trek Lower the bar.
That was the main issue with The Orville, the characters, they weren't that interesting, I don't know if it was the casting or the writing but I just didn't give a shit about any of the the crew.
Thanks for the great review won’t see it for a while in Australia but still like to see what other people think . It has been mentioned the ship is supposed to be a homage to the Reliant from Wrath of Khan.
Im going to watch it... I hope it’s good ofc ,and the trailer gave me more of a Star Trek vibe than both std and stp ever did, and that...is kind of sad.
I checked it out too Junkball. It did not offend me as much as I thought it would. I even. laughed once. Is it enough for me not to cancel CBS All Access? I'll have to watch episode 2 to find out.
Subjective. Expanse is pretty good but nowhere near the evangelists would have you believe. It’s pretty heavy going and there’s very little humour, basically the opposite to Orville. Best sci-fi in 20 years? Whichever show is the most rewatchable
@@MajorVanBloodnok I'd rather rewatch serious and thoughtful science-fiction (emphasis on the science, too) with a cast of surprisingly lovable characters with true camaraderie and even optimism despite the tone. Stuff like that pushes the genre - much like the original Star Trek did in the 60s. I'll take that over diet TNG with bad Seth MacFarlane jokes any day.
@@musicalnotextr Clearly another who didn't stick with Orville beyond first few episodes. Matured fairly quickly into some 'serious' sci-fi, some excellent ethical dilemmas, and yes, even the dick jokes grow on you. Pun intended. Humour is a great delivery method. Whereas stuff that takes itself _too_ seriously never stands the test of time. Think Back to the Future vs Interstellar.
Major Van Bloodnok To each their own. I’ve seen all the episodes for THE ORVILLE’s first two seasons and will probably watch the third when it drops on Hulu because the retro 90s scifi aesthetic is a guilty pleasure (pretty sure that’s the main reason why people like it, TBH). But for me the only story they’ve done that actually stands to the quality of TNG (particularly Michael Pillar’s run in Seasons 3-5 which was the show’s peak) was “Identity: Parts I & II” and the biggest reason was because they mostly drop the humor in that one and focus first and foremost on the characters and their development especially in such a perilous situation. It was the moment THE ORVILLE finally made a choice on whether it wanted to be homage or parody, of which indecision on the matter has always been its problem. Not that I think humor in my scifi/fantasy is bad. If anything, Joss Whedon was the one that showed how you can have humor seamlessly woven into drama without having tone problems. In shows like BUFFY and FIREFLY, quippy dialogue and amusing situations feel very natural in part because they don’t come off as distracting or forced but rather quite natural for the characters in their world. And it’s not like he’s the only one that can do it as his style of writing has been imitated a lot since then - even in the recent live-action Treks for better or worse. And when the imitations aren’t great, there’s still that core understanding present to make the humor come off natural for the characters. The problem with The Orville isn’t that there is humor but that the humor is BAD. Every time someone says a line or does something that’s supposed to be funny, it’s not because it feels forced and out of place. It’s like they come up with the stories and then the scripts only to sprinkle dumb jokes afterwords because they forgot they were writing a “comedy” and not just “Star Trek”. The humor of the show feels more like a consistent afterthought rather than being properly integrated into the narrative. So I reject the BACK TO THE FUTURE comparison because at least that movie knows it’s a comedy and is legit funny from the getgo - whereas THE ORVILLE comes off perpetually confused about what it wants to be. I mean if you find it funny, you do you. But when it comes to rewatch-ability, there’s only two episodes of THE ORVILLE I’d rather watch again and it’s the ones that don’t really resemble the show as a whole. I’ll take the entirety of THE EXPANSE (and other good thinking man’s scifi) over that.
I just watched a few episodes the other day. I'm tickled pink that this animated comedy show feels more canon and Star Trek than Discovery could ever hope to feel. Fun little show. Also, space zombies. That won me over.
I liked your review. I had really considered checking out “Star Trek: Lower Decks” when it was first announced, and I must say that I REALLY liked it. The cast of characters are pretty great, and I also enjoyed the first episode as well. I haven’t really been able to get into Star Trek before, but I do see myself getting into this cartoon and will definitely be looking forward to seeing more of the series later on. It’s nice to see someone else who also likes this series.
Yes thank you this is amazing and the Star Trek show we have all been waiting for. My only question is since when does Starfleet except Orions? Aren't they sex slaving space pirates whose women can enslave men with their minds or pheromones or something?
Mostly playing, but what you're saying is both sexist and racist! Who's to say there aren't Orion women adequately sophisticated to have control over their primal traits? Or, who's to say that perhaps in the future Starfleet isn't so progressive as to WANT that in their ranks.
@@rickyhall7514 I admit she could be an Outlier like Worf. She could be an individual member of the species who decided for whatever reason to join Starfleet. I do know a species does not need to be a member of the federation for an individual of that species to join starfleet. I also don't know if that thing Orion women do is something that they can completely control.
I think your review was spot on and expressed a lot of what made me happy about lower decks ep1 and also what made me unhappy about other recent trek shows. I like your videos, thanks for making them.
3 years later, and I can say I have watched the entire series of Lower Decks, and I love this show! Anyone who thinks the show is "Woke" or whatever is just wrong. I'll say that in the first episode, the Mariner character had some questionable dialog. Specifically when she said with confidence "I'm never wrong." I didn't know if this was a character flaw or something the show was taking seriously. But just a few episodes after this, you realize this is a character flaw. Becket Mariner has a real arch that is fun to watch.
So refreshing to see a review that actually talks about the show instead of the youtuber's personal grievances against studio figures. A Star Trek review by someone who actually likes Star Trek? Insanity.
Let's talk about Star Trek fans not being able too except anything new. I'm so tried of that stupid defense. Remember a movie called Batman vs Superman we remember how many people hated that movie. Then some stupid critic write that superhero are losing popularity. Then avengers infinity war makes 2 billion dollars at the box office. Two superhero movies two different outcomes. It's not old vs new it plan old fashion good writing vs horse shit. How in the hell do you think Star Trek lasted this long.
Best star trek in 20 years. Visually its amazing but the story was good. I would have preferred less comedy but it's funny enough. The lcars, the sound effects and seeing a d'deridex in the credits was such a surprise. I hope we see lots of old favorites that never got their due in previous series. I agree about the don't jump to conclusions. I never, ever want to see another discovery or picard episode for the rest of my life, but this I'm actually looking forward to seeing more of. Having low expectations probably helped but I think this series will hold up as enjoyable.
I signed up for the trial and watched it. I figured I had nothing to lose except 23 minutes that I probably would have spent watching RUclips reviews bashing the show anyway. I actually really liked it.
@@tomgl6684 I tried STD a few times but kept giving up and turning it off. I thought it was just dark and boring and I didn't like any of the characters and didn't care about what was happening to them. I mostly enjoyed Picard although much of that was probably out of the nostalgia of seeing the original characters again - I wish Picard had been done better but I thought it was ok.

Still have yet to see the pilot but after all the reviews I've seen I need to at least hear someone ask why the LCARS is made of rocks
We'll see if the directors wanna tease about that. They teased a lot in episode 9 😂

This is obviously not supposed to be serious "Trek Anime" with adult themes. This was a fun romp with a moral set in the Trek universe. I'm looking forward to more.
"Old school" Trek fan here. Can confirm: This show is completely inoffensive to my Trek sensibilities. Thanks for speaking up, McFly!
I actually live in Cerritos when I saw the first episode I had then biggest smile on my face.
more or less did the Leo once upon a time in Hollywood meme.
I really enjoyed it.
what was the music in the background?
I was probably going to ignore this show, but one of the clips you showed got a chuckle out of me so I guess I'll start watching it.
I was so disappointed with Disco and a little heartbroken with Picard, that I already wrote this one off without even looking for any positives.
Thank you for reminding me to not fall into that trap.
I mean, how many Borg cautionary tales have I watched and still don't understand that hive-minds are bad. In any form.
I love this show so far and honestly don't understand why some people don't like it. I admit, I was expecting to dislike it but it was 26 minutes of pure joy.
@@pocketheart1450 Because we're adults.
@@NeonVisual Some Animation is intended for kids, some for adults, same with live action.... If that's too difficult a concept for you, then you can't be helped.
Shocky
Neon Visual CAN’T be helped. They’ve fallen into “that guy” territory.
@@Ebilcake Odd that they insist on using the Star Trek brand, comedy is the lest featuring factor in Trek, yet here they've turned it into an animated sitcom for people with low attention spans
The Borg are the Star Trek universe zombies.
I feel like a redesign of them being like The Cybernetic Walking Dead.....that truly would be terrifying....just half corpes, mutilated and reanimated with Borg tech.
Thays how tou make the Borg terrifying to a modern audience. Greusome, grotesque and alien all one.
Imagine the borg cutting people apart and essentially making cybernetic zombies while rewatching borg episodes. It really adds to the sense of fear and dread that was trying to be conveyed on public TV, and makes the Borg truly the scariest enemy of the Federation.

@@lieutenant_dan27lt.d45 That would be cool. Mushbrains piloting Borg Cubes would be fun to see.
My point is there's little point to introduce a zombie virus, when that's what the Borg represent.
true Borg are the classic George A.
I enjoyed the heck out of Lower Decks. It's fun.
100% agree. Loved it!
I'd like to see your opinion on the rest of this.
Welcome back my friend.
The only channel that i give a like before watch the video
So I watched a hand full of Orville episodes in season one but hated the characters. What episode should I watch to give it another chance.
@@Ebilcake The entire crew was nothing but a bunch of loser. It's easy to see was you didn't like them.
Thanks for the great review won’t see it for a while in Australia but still like to see what other people think . It has been mentioned the ship is supposed to be a homage to the Reliant from Wrath of Khan.
I hope that you do a follow up episode covering your assessment of the whole first season
me too! breath of fresh air.
I liked it. This is actually my first time watching anything star trek.
Great choice of background music!
Im going to watch it... I hope it’s good ofc ,and the trailer gave me more of a Star Trek vibe than both std and stp ever did, and that...is kind of sad.
I agree, lower decks is alright so far. Def better than discovery or picard, but that's not saying too much of course.
I am enjoying this show! not a trekie but I really like it
Finally someone with some sanity.....
I only saw 2 reviews in total.. this one first.. after that I saw a negative review and I already don't wanna see any more reviews..
More like insainity
I’ve missed you brother, will you do more?
I checked it out too Junkball. It did not offend me as much as I thought it would. I even. laughed once. Is it enough for me not to cancel CBS All Access? I'll have to watch episode 2 to find out.
“[The Orville] has become some of the best sci-fi made in the past 20 years.”
The Expanse would like a word.
I immediately thought of it when he said it
Major Van Bloodnok To each their own.
Thank you thank you thank you for not bashing it lol, I really enjoy it also
I just watched a few episodes the other day. I'm tickled pink that this animated comedy show feels more canon and Star Trek than Discovery could ever hope to feel. Fun little show.
Also, space zombies. That won me over.
Huh. Holy shit, I wasn't expecting a review like that...I...I guess I'll check it out!
Maybe do a video on the design of the Cerritos.
You know how they would mentions stuff happening on other ships in the main series? Well this is that stuff, and that other ship.
I'm looking forward to this. I just wish they had picked something other than the TNG version. The dental office in space bugs the crap out of me.
I'm still waiting for DS9 2
Soooooo happy it is episodic
Dang good review
Lower decks FUCKING ROCKS!!! I’m shocked. It is utterly charming.
I loved it! I laughed a lot and I think it's great to have so many ST shows running after years of void
Yeh I liked it too!
So refreshing to see a review that actually talks about the show instead of the youtuber's personal grievances against studio figures. A Star Trek review by someone who actually likes Star Trek? Insanity.
This is my favorite trek channel...
Season two august 12th I’m excited lower decks is dope.
I really liked it!❤
Couldn't agree with all of this more, if I were to have made a review, this would be it
I couldn't have put it better myself. Thanks for saying what I was thinking. However, I would have given it a 7.498659734 out of 10
Got to see it myself and I found it surprisingly good. (hears angry Hardcore trek people who can't accept change or anything new).
But are there ROCKS when things blow up on the bridge!?
I'm trusting you on this Junky,
Its just your credit, trust and taste that will be DEVASTATED if you are wrong
......So, no worries then
Good grief, stop being so dramatic.

@Tony: I only trust the rating number after the period at the end.
Its fine :)
