Random stuff I put in for reasons I do not know
Pseudo academic discussion on... eh, whatever
This video is possible because of the individual work of fans around the internet. I'm basically just pulling together random articles and picture collections, then packaging them in the form of a video, so thanks to all you wacko internets out there for sharing your material.

Picard season 2 episode 1 gave it a run for its money with destroying the new Stargazer, it's like they are racing each other to see how fast they can blow up these amazing ships that we would all rather not see get blown up

@@misterlyle. When they blew up the 1701 in the "prime" universe over the Genesis planet, it meant something. It was a sacrifice and the moment weighed heavy on us all. The music was appropriate and they gave the scene the time it deserved. With these other ships, it's like a statement they are making, and it began with "There are plenty of letters left in the alphabet" - the only other starship destruction scene with any emotional impact was the Yamato in TNG and the Solvang in Lower Decks. I have to say seeing the brand new Stargazer destroyed was an impact, but not the one they were hoping for. It was a huge disappointment. This was the Stargazer II, and Picard blew it up without so much as a whole episode. Oh well. Plenty of letters left in the alphabet, I guess. EDIT: I wrote this and then sat and thought a minute. There were some notable starship destructions, like the USS Europa in Discovery and the USS Odyssey in DS9, but these were death by combat; glorious. Different vibe. Tragic, but not the same vibe as a senseless sacrifice. The Solvang's destruction was understated, we watched it happen as our jaws dropped.

The reboot Enterprise has just started out to large, it is as big as a Galaxy class starship and the nacelles are just to large the reboot ship looks like it is going to tip backwards. No they didn't as necessity arose and tech increased they got larger. But let's just take size out of the equation, The Abrams reboot ships are hideous compared to the Original, A, B and especially E. The ships act like they don't have shields but more like polarized hull plating, you breath on them and they have hull breaches. The designers are going in the wrong direction with the designs, but that is just my opinion. Don't get me wrong I don't hate them but I strongly prefer the others over the Abramsverse ships.

Actually there is one part I wanted to mention: The size of the ship has been a longstanding misunderstanding by fans who looked at a concept sketch which showed how big the original Enterprise is compared to the Kelvin timeline. That same image also featured a comparison of how big a Kelvin timeline EQUIVALENT of the Enterprise E would be. They used the 2009 Enterprise to illustrate it, so it confused many fans, but it was only intended to be symbolic. So basically if a story was told about a Kelvin timeline's Enterprise E in the future, it would be slightly larger than the Enterprise E of the normal timeline, just like the 2009 Enterprise is only slightly larger than the original Enterprise. You can see that by the size of the dockworkers standing on the ship. This new vessel would only be slightly larger than the original Enterprise A. You can also get an idea of its size from when Kirk is seen running through the halls of the ship while it's being punctured but those bees.
On a side note, this ship has actually grown on me a lot and I wish they'd make another movie or at least a solid online game featuring it.

    • @windghost2

thats a good explenation but i wouldn|t min if it had been 600m long. That would have just shown that the Kelvin Timeline Starfleet is more militaristic than the Prime one. I find it kind of sad that today, new Star Trek Ideas are beeing canceled and hated only because they are not Voyager and TNG. Really shows how intollerant some Trekkies can be. But maybe in like 20-30 Years there can be new without complaining

except that doesn't work anymore as there has been numerous account that the design WAS meant to be same size as the OG enterprise but mystery box abrahms wanted it bigger. this is why you see constant scaling jumps from windows being as initially designed to massively shrunk down or the engineering being that massive while also having a seemingly cavernous taking up the entire secondary hull shuttle bay

10:07 sums up exactly how I've felt about the movies so far. I never got to watch TOS when it was on, wasn't even born then, but watching it decades after and seeing Kirk bluff every attempt to blow up the ship and then in finally doing it in 'Search For Spock' really sets the "emotional bar" pretty high. In the new movies, the writers are like "meh, how are we going to destroy this ship this time?" Even 'Generations' could give you a few sniffles because it was literally the final execution of the Enterprise D.
The same thing has been done in Bayformers, all but one movie has killed or nearly killed Optimus Prime, it was a big thing in the original animated movie, but now it's just like they think we actually care about the character and that killing him repeatedly will elicit an emotion.
I'm enjoying the new movies, but the designers and writers are taking too many liberties with the plots and the look of things. I mean come on, it was the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and they didn't have Klingons? Yeah, I'm now in agreement the writers don't know what Star Trek is.

Random Sh*t? Nay sir, I say nay. There are few commentary aficionados wandering this great expanse of what we might call the 'Star Trek Narrative' who play comfortably in that zone between the vast (and often contradictory) fictional storylines, and the real-world mechanics of creating props and effects for a TV show or movies. Both are integral to each other, and your commentaries address this effortlessly. Doing so with a free-associatively irreverent sense of humor just makes it that much better.
At the root of it all, things have to make a certain degree of sense. Ray Bradbury (as many authors agree) pointed out you can create any zany universe you want with whatever rules of reality you can dream up, but once you create those rules of reality you have to abide by them. TV shows and movies exist in our reality, physically created with our budgets and technology, but they depict a narrative that may have to justify or explain what we physically see. i.e., why do Klingons have bumpy foreheads? In the '60s Roddenberry *wanted* what the budget couldn't deliver, so the 'shoe-polish Fu Manchu' had to do. Come the Motion Picture, NOW there was some money to play with, and we got some seriously funky, alien-looking Klingons. Why were they different? Roddenberry simply indicated that, for all intents and purposes, they'd *always* looked like that. If you simply imagine the 60s Klingons with their own turtles on their heads, the narrative makes sense.
But when the writers began acknowledging the difference, it created a difference where none needed to exist. And once created... oy vay. The convoluted, strained 'explanations' wove into the narrative, and the more they 'explained' the more awkward it got. I love the fact that you examine countless little details in the artist/design reality and connect them to countless other little details in the fictional narrative. There's no critique or pointing out inconsistencies - that's unnecessary and irrelevant. (And we have enough of that anyway.) You work your own patient, curious and eminently fascinating bailiwick. And I, for one, really appreciate the care and the attention you pour into these.

    • @JunkBallMedia
      @JunkBallMedia  7 лет назад +1

Yes. When DS9 acknowledged how TOS Klingons looked different with Worf saying it was something he didn't want to talk about, that was the perfect way to handle it. W didn't need some convoluted explanation. Fiction is great because you can shape and reshape whenever you need to. Things get tedious when new creative teams decide to explain trivial inconsistencies. It's the equivalent of narrative housekeeping.
Thanks for the compliment. You sound smart. Can I eat your brain?

It better be good! or CBS can just go hang out with Sony for now on. so if it sucks they're going to be in deep doo-doo even if it's just kind of all right like Enterprise was. Witch hardcore fans like me put up with. put up with because it still was the only Star Trek available but now times have changed and we have fan films that are getting pretty good. if you do that podcast I might be interested in participating. I seriously disagree the way this incarnation of the Enteprise-A looks. I'm seriously pissed that they trashed the 2009 Enterprise design for it. The Nacelles & Pylons are just painful the way they look (too tall and square), along with the shape of the engineering hull makes the whole ship have a stout appearance. I find it funny how it looks okay from the front but terrible from the side/rear, while the 2009 Enterprise beats any other Enterprise from the side and would be perfect if it had the Nacelles spaced out a bit while being viewed from the front. Heck, the Sketchfab model you showed at the beginning looks better than the movie product. Honestly can't tell which one i dislike more, the Ent-A or the Beyond Refit (since it suffers from the same problems, except it's super stretched) since both are just don't look good. 2009 Enterprise beats them both.
The Refit Enterprise at the start of beyond is better than this, why couldn't they just had the Nacelles spaced apart a bit more, and without that giraffe height neck and used that as the Enterprise-A? *They literally had no reason to destroy the Enterprise other than to use it as a makeshift plot device* .
    Other than that, welcome back!

Sorry, but you do realize that Beyond is the 3rd movie, right? The original Enterprise refit was destroyed in The Search For Spock, which is also the 3rd movie. The 2009 Enterprise was destroyed because Beyond was acting like an anniversary for The Search for Spock and the destruction of the Kelvin. And the "pointless refit" in Beyond was designed like that because to represent the 1966 design for the 50th anniversary, while the 2009 design was mostly based off the motion picture series. Disagree with me or not, I'm sad as much as you do for The 2009 Enterprise, but that's how the story goes and her time has past. Like the others.

Revkor What exactly do you guys want out of a Trek movie anyways? Because by all accounts, the reboots are fine movies. They’re objectively well-made and easily enjoyable. So what do you think they should be? A feature-length episode of one of the series? A shot-for-shot remake of the Wrath of Khan? I think the greatest blessing of these movies is that they AREN’T Trek movies. Because if you haven’t noticed, most Trek movies are crap. To me, the change is welcome.
