    The U.S.S Enterprise-A was the second Federation Starship to bear the name Enterprise. Of course, she succeeded the original Federation Starship Enterprise, which had a lasting legacy and easily became one of the most legendary starships within Starfleet, if not the entire galaxy.

    One thing I didn't see mentioned here is that, I forget if this is canon, the Enterprise A in the prime timeline wasn't built specifically for Kirk, it was rechristened Enterprise with the original being the USS Yorktown NCC-1717. In the Kelvin Timeline, there's a nice little George Lucas "it's like poetry, it rhymes" moment where the Enterprise A was built at Starbase Yorktown.

    • @Spamsmoothie1701
      @Spamsmoothie1701 Год назад +22

      The on screen evidence for the Enterprise A being an entirely new ship is far more compelling than any evidence for the ship being a rechristened Yorktown. In fact, there is no on screen evidence for that at all. There is also some beta canon evidence suggesting the Enterprise A was a different, yet newer Constitution altogether. Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise even states the ship was originally the U.S.S. Ti-Ho. I'm not saying definitively that the Enterprise isn't the Yorktown but I find little reason to believe it is.
      Lastly, given that the Yorktown's bridge can be seen in Star Trek IV and that the crew of the ship acted pretty valiantly after being disabled by the Whale probe, I'd say it would have been a slap in the face to take the Yorktown away from its crew, rename the ship, ignore the Yorktown's legacy and give it to Kirk. Though ignoring a ship's legacy isn't unheard as this was done to the Titan-A by renaming it to the Enterprise G.

    • @rankosaotome

      It was my understanding that they rechristened Yorktown to Enterprise A as a Reward/Punishment for Kirk. It was a old starship which is why they have so many issues with it in ST5. If you consider that then it's no wonder it was decommissioned 7 years later. It was probably 20 years old at that point. Plus it could have been a refit as well.

    The Enterprise-A definitely earned her place in history, but I would rate the Enterprise-C higher in that category. The Enterprise-A helped save the Khitomer Conference and the tentative treaty with the Klingons--but it was the sacrifice of the Enterprise-C at Narendra III that REALLY impressed the Klingons and turned that tenuous treaty into an official alliance with the Federation.

Too bad the producers never bothered to bring either Lt. Yar or Sela back in the other Trek series. I still feel that the episode Yesterday's Enterprise could had been handled better than the end result. A good example was not killing off Captain Garrett. Second have the Enterprise D follow Enterprise C in the time rift, along with the Klingon Bird of Prey in persuit. From there, the battle would be from 4 to 1 to 5 to 4 against the Romulans at Narendra III . The Enterprise-D would be destroyed protecting Enterprise-C and the Klingon Outpost. If the Enterprise-C was at the Fleet Museum, next to Enterprise-D, that would be a great set up to tell the story..This would impress the Klingnons moreso because the Enterprise-C went into the future and returned to bring the three Klingnon Bird of Prey (and Enterprise-D)to battle the Romulans. The Enterprise-D would be the sacrifice, sparing the Enterprise-C(Enterprise-D transferring all data information to the ship to give to Star Fleet Intelligence). The other Klingnon warshipship would look at Enterprise-D's sacrifice the change that leads to peace since they can't return to their future timeline. This would be the best outcome to the story. The computers were wiped and much of the tech stripped, like the transporters, but the engines still worked so earth got her up and running again to set out to figure out what happened in the galaxy, the war was forgotten by now, and regain contact with other worlds.

A modern Starfleet ship running an ancient Klingon cloaking device is probably not going to be emitting any sort of background readings that anyone would expect - anything they do pick up on sensors is probably going to look weird.

    Supposedly the 1701-A was the rechristened Yorktown 1717. So she was\is one of the original.12 (or 13)
    original Connie Class Starships. Another theory of mine is that the Constitutions with lower registries such as the Eagle NCC-986, The Constellation NCC-1017 and the Republic NCC-1371 began life as Saladan or Hermes type single nacelle Starships. It took only minor modifications to match them up with prefabricated Star Drive sections!

    My understanding for why the ship was so buggy. Was the damage done to the Yorktown when the probe disabled it. If you remember from the voyage home, there was a video scene where the Yorktown was transmitting the captains final log to Starfleet.

    • @VME-Brad
      @VME-Brad Год назад +7

      I mean... not so short of lifespans.
      The Enterprise was under Pike before Kirk, and it was under Kirk for decades before damage caused decommissioning.
      The Excelsior class had a stupid long life, over 80 years and still getting refits.
      The Galaxy class only really got phased out because it was an apartment in space during the Dominion war, and most of them were destroyed.
      Most of the "unique" ships we're familiar with, where there's just one example, are ships that were lost. destroyed, or presumed destroyed. So we really don't know if there's any still in service or not, but a bunch of stuff did get pulled out of mothballs a few times when the Federation needed extra ships fast.

    • @johngaltline9933
      @johngaltline9933 Год назад +5

      The Constitutions that survived all lasted 40+ years before decommissioning, We see Excelsiors and Mirandas all over the place in TNG and DS9, taking place some 75 years after they were "new". Seems to track well enough. In universe, it's also possible that sudden leaps in technology cause some space frames to be less suitable to a long life than other ones.
      My head cannon is that the Constitution just wasn't well suited to the vertical style warp core and/or was otherwise incompatible with what is referred to as "transwarp" in the films, and what is just the standard warp scale in TNG and beyond. The sudden change in technology left the Constitutions severely limited compared to Excelsiors for long range and exploration, while being too much to maintain compared to mirandas for "local" work. (Also have the head canon that the Mirandas were built as a means of repurposing all the old, horizontal style, warp cores from ships refit to the vertical ones.)

      One thing more, Admiral Morrows statement in Search for Spock that the ship was 20 years old was grossly inaccurate. It was launched in 2245 and served until 2285 when it was scuttled over the genesis planet. So it was 40 years old from it's original construction and through it's refit for the movies. Star Trek V is a guilty pleasure for me. Although the movie is good until they reach the Great Barrier then it shoots itself in the foot after. I love the Connie Refit so was happy to see the Enterprise-A at the end of Star Trek IV The Voyage Home. People are right that non cannon stuff showed the Enterprise-A was re-christened from the U.S.S. Yorktown, it sort of makes sense. The Yorktown could have been in service for a very short time before encountering the whale probe.
    She probably had to be towed back to Spacedock if her systems weren't restored by the Whale Probe. Which would make Scotty's statement, "I think this new ship was put together by monkey's. Oh she's got a fine engine but half the doors won't open and guess who's job it is to make it right?"
    Regarding the Enterprise-A at the end of Star Trek Beyond...I've got a 3D printed model of the Beyond E-A and I will say she's so much better looking than the other three versions of the 1701 on how she appeared. I mean there's still a couple of things I don't like from it but overall it is a huge improvement from the 1701 from the first two Kelvin movies.

      You know. My opinion on the Enterprise-C has changed. From watching Yesterday's Enterprise, it might had just been a set up for Tasha Yar to return at a later date. What sense would a destroyed Enterprise C be if the Romulans destroyed the Klingnon outpost at Narendra III.

    I had hoped that would be the case with the A, however, I seem to recall someone saying it was a recommissioned ship that was renamed the Enterprise 1701-A. Which would explain why it was in such awful shape when they launched it. A mothballed ship sitting in some junkyard, suddenly powered up and ran over to the space dock certainly explains why it needed so much TLC from Scotty. Kirk was demoted, and while not given any other repercussions for his actions, it only makes sense they would do that to him and his crew as punishment. If anyone could bring it back up to specs+ it was Scotty!

    I would like to see a story line in which retired ships and museum ships were up gunned and pressed into service as Starfleet's First fleet protecting Earth along with brand new ships still undergoing their shakedown cruises. Equip them with more powerful shields, extra torpedo bays, and bolt on phaser strips (maybe saying the modifications had already been designed by the offgoing crews and the equipment stored in the ships in case of war) and they could be potent adversaries. They wouldn't be fast enough for fleet use, but they could be used for local defense. Seeing up gunned old veteran ships operating alongside brand new, wet behind the ears, new construction ships to defeat the Breen attack would make for a good story. Especially if the old veterans turned out to not be vulnerable to the Breen energy dampening weapons and were the ones to finally defeat the Breen.

    At the beginning there, the Enterprise-F was very long lived, compared to her contemporaries, at 15 years, with the only other 2 surpassing her being the Original 1701, and the Excelsior Class 1701-B, at 40 and 33 years respectively.
    That does beg the Question, what about the G? While enterprises overall are short in life, every 3rd one seems to be the Shortest, and taking the NX-01 in the fold as the first of its trio, The G is the 3rd of its Trio, like the A and D before. Yeah i only count the time the A was the A, (if the Rename theory is true?) it still only lated 7 years in service under that name and was still the Shortest lived of them all as “Enterprise”.
