I wish the Kelvin Constitution II had gotten a full work up and finalised. I know it features at the end of Beyond but as other channels discovered that version was only created to show from that specific angle and not a finished design. With its thinner nacelles and better spacing of them being much closer to the Prime Constitution II design in my eyes.
I prefer the classic shape, but actually I prefer the Pike's Enterprise in SNW, which I'm not sure if you can actually call that the "classic" shape, but a modified classic shape.
i think JJ Enterprise is great for the story it was meant to tell, like he said they got major info from a ship from 100s of years into the future so they got a jump start on how much power ships of that time had so they tried and they found to get even a fraction of that power they needed to scale up until they got their tech to that point
If I was tasked to pick a Connie Enterprise to explore the stars with, I'd go with the TMP era Enterprise. There's just something about how sleek that design was compared to the other iterations of the Connie Enterprise.
The Constitution-class of the Kelvin Timeline is 1.6 times bigger than the main Timeline. If a TNG era was explored in the Kelvin Timeline the USS Enterprise-D would be 1,040 meters and the possible USS Voyager would be 552 meters.
Bigger, however, makes maximum sense for that time, what humanity was already able to build. Realistically, I think that it would not be impossible for them to build even a 2-3 km starship at that time. Just look at how big Starbase Yorktown is.

It's cool. But honestly I've always loved the Constitution 2 class the most. And since you mentioned the Doomsday Machine, I seriously hope we get to see something new of that sometime soon
How can you not love Scotty's 'super fun happy slide' or for any other crew member, besides why not make a ship that an adultchild wouldn't like to have fun in!
I am a flexible person, the various Enterprises are like cake, pie and ice cream to me; it's all good. Different, but good. Some more different than others, but that's OK. Nothing wrong with being different, it's still good! :) A part of me actually enjoys the Kelvin Enterprise more than the others, simply because of the higher fidelity of the ship being depicted; we get to come closer and see way more detail than with the older ships, because you can't cram this much detail onto a physical model to begin with, and you can't do the close-up camera moves either because physical cameras are bulky and would interfere with the model itself. But I love 'em all. They've each got their own unique charm, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Live and let live, I say. :)
It's not, it's horrendous and impractical and non futuristic, particularly things like the brewery engine room with a concrete floor. A lot of it is mangled and out of proportion, not just compared to other Star Trek but just in general like the engines looking bow-legged and far too close together, it would have been better for him to just create a completely different kind of Science Fiction show or a Star Trek show set in a different time rather than trying to overwrite what already has been done. His work with Star Trek and Star Wars will be looked back on as truly disrespecting and destroying well thought out and appealing franchises into pale imitations of things he was attempting to copy but ended up warping, pun intended, in the process. Yes, even aesthetically, another simple example is the bridge is a blindingly white, illogically arranged mess with indicator lights all the way down on the floor and so many ridiculous elements that are not even pleasing to the eye, as opposed to the logically arranged workplace originally designed that was so well done that it was actually copied by real life military command centers. JJ Abrams visions are just flash without substance.
I beg to disagre... If my grandma had wheels... IMHO the aesthetic is a mess, heavily based on Star Wars wannabe - boo-hoo-George-won't-let-me-play-with-his-toys!-So-I'll-make-my-own-Star-Wars-somewhere-else... The Space scenes, with few exceptions, try to shock and awe but instead are either idle or confusing from several points of view.
As a fan of most things Star Trek since 1987, I can honestly say I enjoy the Kelvin timeline movies and the updates to the ships in the movies. If it had not been for these 3 movies, there is a good chance a friend of mine would not be a Trek fan now. These movies made Trek (in his words) kinda cool to him, he could almost understand why I have been a fan for so long. Then he watched episode 1 of Picard before I did, and text me "Ok, this show is bad ass", then after that 1st season of Picard, he went back and watched the original series, TNG, and he absolutely LOVES Deep Space Nine. Now, he knows my pain growing up, waiting for the next season of the current show(s) to begin feeling like a crack head needing their next fix lol.
While watching this video I realized I forgot about the other ships so I googled Kelvin Hood and got a hockey player, a rapper, and an oven exhaust in the results lol
at 11:06 you can clearly see the unmistakable hull shape of a T'plana-Hath ship (the one the vulcans came to earth in first contact) ,love that blink and you'll miss it easter egg I've just noticed while watching this video :D
I hate this design. JJ Abrams never understood the idea of "less is more." Everything about it has to be bigger, faster, shinier, more futuristic... and it fails at all. It's like a celebrity who has had way too much plastic surgery and yet is still convinced they look great. The refit-looking saucer doesn't match the curving lines of the secondary hull. The nacelles are WAY too big and chunky, and the struts too far forward and curved for no appreciable reason. The bridge is so white and bright that I suspect the crew's eyes would ache after a shift. It all just combines into a package that screams "too much!" in its every aspect.
Back in 2009, I liked the ship design. It was amazing to my eyes when I had a toy replica of the starship (broke it a couple of times being young and all), but it was the first modern rendition of the Constitution class I've seen long before Star Trek Discovery came up with its own. Which, I love that one as well.
I don't get why people complain about the redesign. The original movies design was very different from the original series for exactly the same reseasons.
The TMP design was a progressive in-canon upgrade & is a beautiful ship that keeps everything that worked on the TOS design, used the changed stuff on the Phase 2 design, & gave it a sleek look. The JJ-prise on the other hand, is meant to be the replacement of the TOS, Phase 2, Refit, & A due to the different far too into the future technology and only got the saucer right. The nacelles look too much like the Doomsday Machine, the bottom of the neck is too far back on both the front & back of the secondary hull, the shuttle bay is cavernous, the pylons are the worst pylons next to the Enterprise-J, & the whole thing is both too huge & fails to follow both the rule of thirds & the golden ratio.
What do I think of the Kelvin Enterprise? Well... let's just say that one of my favourite bits of Star Trek Beyond was watching it be gruesomely destroyed. The TMP-refit is my favourite version of the Constitution class, and I find the Strange New Worlds incarnation as the proper way to modernize the classic design.
I do like the look of this Enterprise but I prefer the Prime Time-line Enterprise (refit) simply because at least you could live on-board that ship and keep the gift of sight as you wouldn't be blinded by how shiny it is inside.
Enterprise: "I'm so Shiny Watch me dazzle like a diamond in the rough Strut my stuff; my stuff is so... Shiny Send your armies but they'll never be enough My shell's too tough....." Oh ,wait, wrong movie😅
🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely greatly wonderfully well done and very informatively explained and executed in every detail way shape and format provided on the Kelvin Universe of the Constitution class Enterprise, And on its major larger size difference and of its weapons, sheilds and warp engines and other various functions and of its capabilities and that of their various duties and missions required of it as well; Anyways a job very nicely fabulously well done indeed Sir!👌.
20:57 Mark! 33,847 Views + Mine! 🎉 1.5K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 I just subscribed! You're welcome, and thanks! 😊 Notes: Hmm. My model kit and toy versions of the "Star Trek" ships weren't exact duplicates of what was seen in the series before it was digitally remastered. So I grew up being used to different aesthetics of the exterior design. So the new ones in the new movies didn't bother me. They look much better than the balloons made starship shaped! 😁 Or the birthday cake candles! 😂 The "Two Ships" episode of "Designated Survivor" has a good scene that visually shows off the "Star Trek" influence on ship bridge designs. Supposedly the "Arleigh Burke-class" uses such bridge designs. In the episode though, when the destroyer gets rammed by a garbage barge scow, the crew tumbles and consoles explode as if it were the "Starship Enterprise ™️"! 😂 I wonder if so many people hadn't seen "Laverne & Shirley" or beer commercials or worked in breweries if the movie would have been less scoffable. 🤔 If people would have just seen it as the potable water and sewage treatment facilities of Engineering? 🤔
How do you explain that fact that even the Kelvin and other ships of the time before time supposedly changed didn't resemble the TOS ships in any way? Also ships seem to last about 1 mission in this universe. That must be pretty pricey. But hey, assign a newly graduated academy officer as captain, I'm sure it will work out really well. After all, you know he did OK in the original universe (because old Spock told you) so I'm sure even without all the training and experience he's going to do fine. Maybe they could have just crewed the ships by randomly selecting people on the streets of San Francisco? Maybe the next show will be the crew of next generation at age 10?
IF the Kelvin Enterprise is so much bigger - why isn't that reflected in the windows? According to those it still has about the same size as the original. And yah - I know the "It's bigger" is most likely just made up on the spot to explain the HUGE brewery it has instead of an engine room... I mean - we know Scotty likes a wee drink once in a while, but that's a BIT much...
Well, I remember watching Star Trek on TV (our black and white...) and TMP was one of my first movies in theatre. But somehow the Kelvin aesthetics have a special place in my heart and I like the designs very much. Probably because they fit so well with my '70s perception of "futuristic", the TOS simply did less so... On the other hand, the refit is an icon.
People always complained the the USS Vengeance was way too big, but I personally disagree. I believe Admiral Marcus's strategy was to have no need for vulnerable supply lines and make the Vengeance a flying Starbase, and the centerpiece of a fleet of starships as they blitzkrieg straight to Kronos. Klingons are stealthy bastards who would want to starve a invading fleet by attacking its supply lines so the ship had massive cargo space/fabricators inside for everything they would need for a campaign along with overwhelming firepower.
I justified the huge, cavernous engineering secondary hull as they had some cool, advanced tech but not in adjacent areas. Better nacelles but not better warp cores. The clunkier original warp cores were not capable of providing enough power for such a massive ship so they just made them bigger. They also had to get bigger tanks to hold more deuterium and anti-deuterium to power the reactors to produce the extra warp plasma. As Starfleet engineers went along, warp cores became more efficient and smaller and more of the secondary hull could be used for other purposes. I imagine as the Kelvin timeline came closer to the TNG era that ships started to look and feel more like the Prime timeline ships.
The Kelvin timeline brought me into the wider Trek universe. I love the aesthetic and Enterprise of those films so much. I get why it doesn’t appeal to a lot of older fans but I love it. If they were going to do an alternate universe for the reboot then I’d want them to do something different in terms of visuals and storytelling. Love what Disco/SNW did too!
I like the fan theory the main reason for such a massive departure was sensors showed just how drastically different shields could be formed and laid out, that would change how you would start to think about ship design. From "giant bubbles" to skin like and overals/overlays, and even just moving away from that "radar" like sweep weakness TOS Enterprise had the DS9 Defiant took advantage of. It's just a shame in actual design, they didn't actually make something that felt like that or look like that (beyond the brew house engine). It's something I would love to see another attempt by someone else make for Federation ships. Though the Star Trek comics that were made for the Kevlin timeline did make some interesting Romulan/Klingon jumps that fit that type well enough.
I know a lot of fans did not like the films. But I always felt they were entertaining and the actors did a great job replaying legendary characters. The graphics were really good. The design of the Enterprise had its quirks, it was a good change considering the alternate timeline.
We do. Google "Kelvin D7". You'll get a whole bunch of Star Trek Online pictures but that model is based on the "Klingon Warbirds" that Kirk fights during his Kobayashi Maru test. Naturally it's just as big as the Konnie.
Wasn't a fan of Star Trek before 2009 so my preference is the Kelvin version. Having said that when it comes to my favorite Star Trek ships... Enterprise D, E, than Kelvin Enterprise, B, and Vengeance.
2:32 That's the only part that doesn't work. The U.S.S. Kelvin was also a massive departure and the design we see is supposedly the same Kelvin in the main timeline that wasn't so ridiculously huge.
This is what gets me too.. how could the arrival of the narrada be what triggered the changes, BEFORE they even had access to the ship and its technology? That's the one piece of everything that breaks it all..
Kirk: _"You're telling me I, I can't tell you that I'm following your own orders. Why not? What happens?"_ Spock: _"Jim, this is one rule you cannot break. To stop Nero, you alone must take command of your ship."_ Kirk: _"How? Over your dead body?"_ Spock: _"Preferably not."_
I actually like how the nacelles look on the Kelvin Enterprise, when I think of engines that are capable of pushing a ship beyond the speed of light the slim design of the prime universe just doesn't do it for me, but these feel like they have punch to them. I would have loved if they started out orange/red and then changed blue when going warp.
I'll be honest, the Kelvin timeline is the first thing I experienced when getting into Star Trek. After watching the other movies and shows, my biggest question is "Does the Romulan sun still go supernova? How does the Federation address it with their knowledge of how the event was supposed to happen?"
@cujoedaman I see it more like a discussion point for fans. JJ Abrams doesn't have to answer the question, it's just a way of seeing how far from the Prime Timeline people think the Kelvin Timeline has gone
Well if you look at what Picard does the answer is yes and the mighty Romulan star empire seemingly just decides you know despite having multiple worlds we are just gonna put a barrel in our mouths pull the trigger become refugees and then for some reason the federation then decides to just do the exact opposite of what they would do to the point we don't know if this is the mirror universe or not
I think the design aesthetic - retro '60s futurism, but from a 21st century perspective instead of a 20th century one - was pretty much on the money. SNW's Enterprise might nominally veer closer to the original in a lot of ways, but also feels distinctly too 'modern' for my liking. The stylings of the Kelvin universe actually appeal to me a great deal.
Actually as I understood it, elements of the ship design were not as advance as the main timelines. The more advance the technical civilization the higher the level of miniaturization. In the main timelines miniaturization led to smaller ships since major components were much smaller. The Kelvin universe had massive plumbing in comparison to main timelines due to this technical retardation probably due to Valcan's demise affecting many technological projects in many races. Just throwing that out there.
Awesome new video Adam. You know I still don't fully like the Kelvin Enterprise but it has grown on me over the years. I prefer the Beyond Enterprise-A it definitely looks better in my opinion. For the original 09 film and STID I swear the thing is like the Tardis inside. It may look "normal" outside but it's layout inside just doesn't quite match. I also wished they had kept it at the original length which was supposed to be just a little bit longer than the original Connie Refit. Not the gigantic version that is official and I refuse to accept that scale. I too laughed at the "super fun happy slide for Scotty". I really wished that they had gone with Gabriel Koerner's Enterprise that was apparently submitted to the team that was developing the Trek 09 movie. At least his kept classic design elements but at the same time making it so it would look good on the big screen.
Probably not a popular opinion but the ST2009 Enterprise grew on me over time, as well as the STID version with its subtle changes - overall I think this version is the best-looking design out of the 4 variations (3x1701, 1x1701A) of the Kelvin-verse. Sure, I would have made some slight changes to it -- maybe not have the front end of the engineering hull stick out so much but I love the look of the nav deflector, a mix of STMP refit and TOS 1701. I also would have made the nacelles be more spread apart by about a nacelle-width -- and the ship would have been perfect for me. Now, I'm NOT a fan of the STB refit (that got destroyed) with the thin, swept-back pylons, smaller nacelles -- the whole ship was thinned out to make it look overly vulnerable and I think I heard that was done on purpose for the movie. I don't like how it looks from the orthos, particularly from the side and the top -- the nacelles are too thin and too close to each other. Then there's the Kelvin 1701A -- and I was disappointed in that reveal. It's frickin ugly and I am a 1000% not a fan. Looking at 3D models of it, it has weird shapes - I HATE the weirdly shaped pylons, I hate the overall design choices. I hate the lack of imagination (compared to the ST09 OG variant) in the nacelles (and the pylons). I even hate how the registry and the name of the ship is displayed on the bottom of the saucer -- it's confusing and tacky IMO because it looks like the saucer is flipped over -- not how I would have done that for sure; I would not have put anything on the bottom of the saucer. I think the Kelvin A is a BACKWARD attempt at trying to improve the aesthetic/design of the original ST09 1701. Since I'm a BIG fan of the STMP Constitution refit -- THAT is MY GOAT, and since there was some inspiration from that ship on the OG 1701 Kelvin Enterprise I have an appreciation for it's look and appeal. Like I said, it's grown on me - I'm ok with it. Don't care about it's size or the Apple-look, but the STB 1701 and the 1701A are garbage.
I only ever saw the first JJ Abrams Star Trek movie but I’m a Classics guy I prefer the Enterprise from the Prime Universe and although I like the Strange New Worlds Enterprise I prefer the 1960s Star Trek TOS Enterprise, that ship is just Awesome and I like the intro music to the TOS Series too, when I’m dead I want that music playing at my funeral, not that I will be conscious and listening to it when I’m dead.
The Prime Timeline Sovereign-class NCC-1701-E remains my personal favorite Enterprise. The Enterprise from The Original Serious is like an iconic and much beloved 1957 Chevy Bel Air. The refit NCC-1701 from The Motion Picture and the replacement NCC-1701-A are more like a 1961 Chevy Impala SS409 sport coupe. The Galaxy-class NCC-1701-D is like a huge, luxurious yet powerful Cadillac Escalade-V. Ahhh, but the NCC-1701-E is the McLaren Speedtail of the franchise. "Make it so."
The up scaling makes no sense. It seems like they did it after the fact, the windows, docking ports, doors on the back next main hanger door are way oversized even the escape pod they launched Kirk out of don't march the size off the hatch it comes from.
Khan is NOT fully named in that movie-- he is only referred to as Khan. Spock Prime describes HIS Khan (Noonien Singh) when K-Spock calls him. I point this out to present my theory that Khan is actually a title, not a name-- and THIS Khan is a different guy from the SS Botany Bay (they WERE all "supermen", after all). This is the easiest in-canon explanation as to why Khan bears no resemblance at all to Ricardo Montalban. (Yes, I know this theory is refuted in Strange New Worlds, but I counter that it's reinforced in Picard.)
I’ve always loved the overall shape of the TOS enterprise and the variants that came after. The reboot Enterprise was a bold design. It didn’t take me long to prefer the more organic look and style. I still love them all though. Of the future main timeline Enterprises it took me a while to appreciate the D, the C was a complete disgrace of design, and the E was another favorite.
I like the Enterprise from the Kelvin timeline with the exception of the size. If they kept it the same size but with the look of what it is then it would have been better. Just wish we'd be able to see the A in action.
lieutenant Commander Adam since you're doing the Kelvin Timeline can you please do the U.S.S Vengeance from Star Trek Into Darkness it is a humble request of a Filipino trek fan ❤❤❤❤
I don't care what it looks like, so long as it bears the name ENTERPRISE, it would be an honor to serve aboard her. Maybe get a handful of those ample nacelles.
I love the design. I also love the lore behind why the ship is so large. I also love the vengeance. It's typical section 31. It's also badass. Great video.
The Kelvin timeline Enterprise for me is more like Steampunk meets TOS and then tries to look modernistic or futuristic. That ship looked like it could house 4200 crew not the 400+ they said it had.
I honestly thought the Kelvin designs for Federation ships was a fairly decent interpretation of the older stuff. The exterior being a lot better than interior designs imo. They were just different enough in their look to be their own thing, but still are clearly firmly rooted in earlier designs. I can't say I have liked the designs of the stuff that has come since the Kelvin movies (but to each their own). caveat: Personally I really liked the NX-01, C and E as far as Enterprise goes.

A part of me actually enjoys the Kelvin Enterprise more than the others, simply because of the higher fidelity of the ship being depicted; we get to come closer and see way more detail than with the older ships, because you can't cram this much detail onto a physical model to begin with, and you can't do the close-up camera moves either because physical cameras are bulky and would interfere with the model itself.
But I love 'em all. They've each got their own unique charm, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Live and let live, I say. :)
Say what you will about J.J Abrams but the asthetic of the reboot films is just beautiful.
@@SaphoSheep it really isnt...
No it isn't. It's gaudy and ridiculous.
NOPE!
Absolutely. I don't care at all for this design and the rehash of characters but it got many people into the fold and bright money back to Trek.
Excellent intro you get a like just for that now “Get on with it !”
I think the Kelvin timeliness Enterprise A is one of the very best Trek ship designs of all time.😊
Love the JJ Enterprise. Love the Originals. Love the new Pike ship. All Love baby❤!
Gene said he didn't want it to look like a hot rod so JJ decided it should look like a hot rod 😕
While watching this video I realized I forgot about the other ships so I googled Kelvin Hood and got a hockey player, a rapper, and an oven exhaust in the results lol
Uss Oven Exhaust brings the smoke!
@@M33f3r Nohing is smokier than the USS Kuznetsov!
I love every enterprise in every time and every universe
at 11:06 you can clearly see the unmistakable hull shape of a T'plana-Hath ship (the one the vulcans came to earth in first contact) ,love that blink and you'll miss it easter egg I've just noticed while watching this video :D
Apples and Meatballs.
If you've been a fan before 2009, this is always the answer.
I do like the look of this Enterprise but I prefer the Prime Time-line Enterprise (refit) simply because at least you could live on-board that ship and keep the gift of sight as you wouldn't be blinded by how shiny it is inside.
What do you think the Kelvin universe version DS9 or the Defiant or the sovereign class would look like ??
DS-9 wasn't made by the Federation
i for one, really like the Kelvin Enterprise, and it was my first enterprise i saw in the theater
Enterprise: "I'm so Shiny
Watch me dazzle like a diamond in the rough
Strut my stuff; my stuff is so...
Shiny
Send your armies but they'll never be enough
My shell's too tough....." Oh ,wait, wrong movie😅
I liked this ship and the design.
I like it! I’ve watched Star Trek since the 70’s and played STO! I like it!
XCV Enterprise beats all.
But I'm just a sucker for ring-based warp drive systems, too. 😁

Notes: Hmm. 😂
The "Two Ships" episode of "Designated Survivor" has a good scene that visually shows off the "Star Trek" influence on ship bridge designs. Supposedly the "Arleigh Burke-class" uses such bridge designs. In the episode though, when the destroyer gets rammed by a garbage barge scow, the crew tumbles and consoles explode as if it were the "Starship Enterprise ™️"! 😂
I wonder if so many people hadn't seen "Laverne & Shirley" or beer commercials or worked in breweries if the movie would have been less scoffable. 🤔
If people would have just seen it as the potable water and sewage treatment facilities of Engineering? 🤔
It’s a great upgrade. It looks awesome.
Judge me all you might, this version of the Enterprise is one of my personal favorites with a close second being the E
Need to do a vid on the Vengeance now please!!!
You mean the ship that looks like Michael Bay and JJ Abrhams made a baby together and behold the Deceptaprise is born!
Just to be on ANY ENTERPRISE would be AWESOME!
This was my first ever enterprise, and i personally love it to pieces (favourite being the D) so i dont hate it one bit
I think my favorite Enterprise NCC-1701 is whichever I'm watching at the time!
A lot seems to happen in Iowa
I know right? Unlike reality where the world seems to revolve around Ohio sometimes. I swear. 😂
Excelsior!!! Enterprise-B refit/style
Did we ever see on screen the Klingon answer to this Constitution? The D7 was their equivalent in the prime timeline, but here?
Exactly. Engineering was a damn brewery. Exactly what I thought. Irritated me so much I damn near walked out.
@@jerricacw8876I put JJverse as an offshoot of NewTrek, not original.
@@jerricacw8876Bingo.
Kirk: _"You're telling me I, I can't tell you that I'm following your own orders. Why not? What happens?"_
Spock: _"Jim, this is one rule you cannot break. To stop Nero, you alone must take command of your ship."_
Kirk: _"How? Over your dead body?"_
Spock: _"Preferably not."_
Take a shot every time he says "MASSIVE"...
Don't ask questions that JJ Abrhams can't answer.
Yup if they make a new movie they should give the Enterprise the A style worpcore from the TMP movies
How about something phase 2 style.
I wonder if they'll ever be a JJ Abrams version of the Enterprise-D?
My favorite timeline and design aesthetic! my upcoming comic series takes place there 2245 - 2290s
It's shiny because it's a hood ornament.
JJ Abrams is a talentless hack.
It's either "mystery box" or re-using old plotlines from the very same franchise when he takes over.
Those Kelvin ships have always looked like Apple products from 2006
I’ve always loved the overall shape of the TOS enterprise and the variants that came after.
I like a Connie and she's a Connie, like sure nothing going to beat the TOS enterprise in design but yeah still a solid design.
A shiny Enterprise may be understandable if you want to reflect the maximum amount of ambient radiation in certain wavelengths.
Would love to see George Takei as captain Sulu & the Excelsior from TOS time line come bac,k into the Kelvin timeline an meet up with Sulu K- Timeline

I love the USS FRANKLIN
I love the design. I also love the lore behind why the ship is so large. I also love the vengeance. It's typical section 31. It's also badass. Great video.
Is that a window on the bridge or a view screen
@@keithrobertson8101 it is in fact a Window on the bridge
