    Star Trek: Enterprise, titled simply Enterprise for its first two seasons, is an American science fiction television series created by Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. It originally aired from September 26, 2001, to May 13, 2005 on UPN. The sixth series in the Star Trek franchise, it is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series. Set in the 22nd century, a hundred years before the events of The Original Series, it follows the adventures of the Enterprise, Earth's first starship capable of traveling at warp five, as it explores the galaxy and encounters various alien species.
    Following the culmination of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and with Star Trek: Voyager scheduled to end, UPN asked Braga and Berman to create a new series to continue the franchise. Rather than setting it in the 24th century alongside Deep Space Nine and Voyager, they decided to set it in an earlier period, allowing them to explore new parts of the Star Trek fictional universe. Wanting a more basic, relatable, character-driven series, Berman and Braga concentrated on a core trio: Captain Jonathan Archer (played by Scott Bakula), Commander Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), and Sub-commander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock).

    Captain Archer was the most relatable captain to me. He was both open minded, but stubborn. He fully admitted the way he disliked Vulcans, but began to understand why they did withhold things from humans as he said that humanity should not give technology to less advanced societies.
    He loves his crew, and that caused him to do things he regretted in making sure he kept them safe. He feared death, but was willing to accept it if needed. He was both short tempered, but also levelheaded when he knew he needed to set the example for his crew. He blew up numerous times to the Vulcan command, but ultimately apologized to them for it. In return he gained respect from the Vulcans, and helped to make them see that humans could adapt into responsible voyagers. Not perfect, but adaptable.

    One of the best Star Trek shows on television. Season 4 got us all ramped up for more... unfortunately. T'Pol is my favorite Vulcan, the development of her character from snide to loyal crew member and friend to Archer really made her character and the acting very genuine. They could create a whole new show around her.

    • @daltonx6177
      @daltonx6177 7 месяцев назад +4

      Not sure about that... As much as I loved T'Pol, you have to admit she was exploited for her looks, probably even much more than Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine. So much that she basically quit acting after Enterprise. But she did get married and had three children, which also really matters, mind you ! 😉

    • @sighteternal497
      @sighteternal497 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@daltonx6177 While I do agree, Hollyweird has always exploited very attractive people especially women throughout its history. These actors know the industry they are in. Star Trek is also known as the pigeon holer of many actors careers due to type casting which is why so many actors from all of the series end up doing fan conventions signing autographs and taking pictures with most newer acting jobs centered around the character they played in their perspective series starting with TOS. Even Bill Schatner could barely find acting work after TOS other than his voice over for the cartoon until Star Trek The Motion Picture in 1979, almost ten years after the original show had been cancelled at NBC.🙂

    One of the problems with Enterprise was that it was on UPN, a network that was struggling not only with getting viewership but with acquiring enough t.v. station affiliates. They did manage to syndicate Enterprise in some markets that didn't have a UPN affiliate, but it was still far less available than the other Star Trek shows had been. Then around the time of Enterprise Season 4, the struggling UPN merged with the also struggling WB, and both networks were trying to cut back on their most expensive shows in order to become financially viable. Enterprise was obviously one of the expensive ones.

      Enterprise suffered from being up against fox's mega hit american idle that's why it lost most its audience, yr 2 some came back but it was more of the same, most upn had trek tng at 7, trek voyager at 10 possible ds9 at 11.

The story was so strong that I still feel like I lost close friends. It's ending left me with an emptiness. I know that crew is gone. to the very least..hell if it was for me I would even be willing to watch it if it was set 22 years after the last episode and since they decided to play Trip dead, I would have loved to have seen him turning out to be the "Future Guy/illusement Man" of the future, I honestely would have loved if it turn out that Trip dead has been used by Daniels to recruit Trip' as Temporal agent, only or him later on realize that Daniel is actually part of Section 31 and he had allowed the Xindi Attack on Earth to happen in order to trying to change events to ensure a better/more powerful Federation in his timeline no matter the cost, including allowing the death of Trip's sister...as revenge Trip defect from the organization and try to change events using the Sulibans as a minion but in this regard failed to derail Daniels plans and perhaps (as premise), I would have put that in in 2173 Trip try again a new plan to block Daniels in his plot by recovering the torpedo of Sim Tucker, his former clone, who he plan to reanimate and give a cure for his rapidly age falling in order to prevent the start of new Romulan/Federation War, that in Daniels plan it would allow the Federation to emerge stronger and secluded the Romulan as space power..heck we might even tried to justificate T'pol emotional outburst outside Vulcan character by making an episode who reveal that T'pol is actually half-Romulan since his father is revealed to be either a spy or better an exile from the Romulan (perhaps we could use the situation even to explain better the difference between the TOS romulan aspect and the TNG Romulan....something better of the Northern and Southern group......Seriously if I was the producer instead of making this rubbish of Discovery and Picard, I would delete the all genre altogheter, and the sad part of all this you know is what? Since it's 2023 and we all have streaming the producer not even bother to make quality decent series, while in 2005 Discovery and Picard would have never been played out at all)

    I'm 71 years old. I have enjoyed ALL Star Trek series, including the newest ones on Paramount+. I firmly believe that 'Enterprise' got the short end of the stick. As in TOS, it took a while to 'get off the ground' but succeeded as a great installment to/of the legacy of Star Trek. I'ld suggest another short series featuring Admiral Archer, going into the TOS time period, just prior to Strange New Worlds.

      I disagree about TOS needing time to get off the ground. The first several episodes grabbed me right from the start in 1966. I think most fans agree, especially those around in 1966. It's TNG, in particular, that took about 3 seasons to get going. I could barely make it through the first several episodes of TNG in 1987. I'm surprised I decided to give it a second chance, but I did, eventually.

I loved both versions of the theme song (maybe a slight edge to the second one). Third and Fourth seasons were especially fantastic, though the finale was the single worst Star Trek episode I had ever seen. I still can’t even bear to rewatch a minute of that travesty, though I’ve watched all the other episodes multiple times. I miss "Enterprise" and was glad I tuned in one day-even if I couldn't get UPN very well til I got cable TV. Loved it after my dad introduced me to "TOS" in '66. I didn't like the holodeck story, but if a series-or movie-could explain why it was done to cover up Section 31's use of Trip to infiltrate the Romulan War, not just to kill off Trip and the show, than that might've worked. I worked for a major US motorcycle manufacturer and I was in York to learn everything I could absorb about a particular family of motorcycle. My flight landed in BWI on Sept 10th 2001. The next day was so bizarre and frightening. America had been attacked. The only thing I remember from that trip that was even slightly a distraction to the constant buzz of 9-11 was the premier of Enterprise. I've often wondered how the events of 9-11 affected the show and the audience. Ive often felt that the show might have stood a better chance if it existed outside of the pain and uncertainty of 9-11. I can say that for some reason or another I was not instantly a fan. It took years before I watched the entire series. When I finally became emotionally invested in the show, the show had been off the air for a while. I love it now..

    Arguably one of the more realistic and believable versions of the franchise.
    My favourites are:
    Original, Enterprise and DS9. The others were just a little tooo "perfect" for my liking.

    Enterprise was something I liked from the beginning. While the first season might have been considered "bad", it was not so bad compared to the first season of Next Gen. As enterprise went on, it got progressively better. I have gone back and re-watched it in its entirety, several times, and my opinion never changes.

    Great video essay. Thanks! I've watched every episode of the various Star Trek TV series from TOS through Enterprise. TOS and Enterprise are the only two I own and occasionally rewatch. The third season has Captain Archer making morally dubious decisions (e.g. taking warp components from an innocent ship) in order to enhance the mission to save Earth, something that humanized him for me. Contrast that with some of Janeway's decisions on Voyager. I found something to like in each of the series, but those two are my favorites.

    Shran made the last year for me so because of that, it was cancelled too soon. There was also plenty of insight into his culture that could have been pursued and the politics of the Andorian culture. They could have also cleaned up T'Pol as a more Vulcan personality along the lines of the TOS Spock. She appeared too human in all episodes.

    I never watched this show when it was on TV. I have since watched this series multiple times over the last 10 years. The first season is little rough, just like most Star Trek series. Once they hit half-way through the 2 seasons and up into the 4 seasons, it was a great Star Trek series. When I talk to other Star Trek fans about this series, it amazes me how many have never seen it or dismiss it as the worst Trek made. It is sad because it is a great show and getting stronger before it was cancelled.

    I really like Enterprise. I actually rewatch it more often than I do other Trek series. I especially liked the subtle way Jolene Blalock portrayed T'Pol in the last 2 seasons by having an intense undercurrent of emotion, yet keeping that emotionality in check - just as a Vulcan would - not an easy task for an actor. Bravo JB! Bravo!

    I thought the Andorians were portrayed the best in Enterprise. Even Strange New Worlds version looks cheap. Especially the antennas. At least they moved and looked alive on Enterprise. All other versions look like cheap glued on pieces of rubber.

    • @thomasjoychild4962
      @thomasjoychild4962 Год назад +5

      Re: SNW, I might be wrong but I thought previous depictions of aenar had their antennae be longer and less mobile/expressive than andorian ones, so Hemmer's seemed consistent to me? The antennae on Enterprise were great, but they were a nightmare from a behind the scenes standpoint. The motors that moved them were easy to visually hide but they broke down a lot and they were so loud that EVERY line from an actor playing an andorian and a lot of lines from other actors in scenes with andorians had to be ADR'ed in post. I don't know if the tech has advanced since then and gotten quieter or what, or maybe it'd be cheaper now to do the antennae as full CGI, but at the time, the cost of all the ADR and repairs was a factor in how often Andorians showed up IIRC. I'm definitely not disagreeing that it looked great though.

    Enterprise was/is great, I particularly liked that their tech wasn’t always reliable and that couldn’t just simply synthesize parts like they did in later shows (in particular, Voyager) that they couldn’t transport (at least not without risk) that is more “down to Earth”, and absolutely LOVED the actors/characters (especially Trip and T’Pol, though not so much their “steamy” scenes) It is a damn shame that it was canceled just as it was getting really good, absolutely HATED the finale, which basically turned the whole incredible series into merely an episode of TNG (and a steaming bag of garbage one at that) I think that Paramount should make a feature-length MOVIE so that cast & crew can get the proper send-off that they (and we as Enterprise fans) deeply deserve!! In the words of Captain Picard: (Please) “Make it so!”

Anyway the crew and ship got beaten and battered over each episode and didn't magically regenerate for the next instalment . Thats how Voyager should've been done the ship getting more damaged and running low on parts over the seasons instead of magically being fine the next episode

Years back, around 2005, my Dad was a wedding DJ, and had a bride and groom who wanted the song as their reception entrance song. Yes, it was a Trek themed wedding. The cake was cut with a rather large blade of a Klingon origin.

    I loved the ST Enterprise series and was very disappointed that it ended up being canceled after such a short time, plus it was underrated from the beginning considering it was supposed to be before all the others time wise in the Star Trek universal ages and before the 1701 with Captain Kirk. Scott Bakula did a great job with being the captain of the NX-01, and it is so sad that he didn’t have the recognition as those of the other series as others did with their characters. I will always be a big fan of the WHOLE entire Star Trek series, and movies as well, it is more hopeful than a lot of others I’ve seen lately, and much more practical as well. The stories are strong and also actors and actresses, including all those behind the scenes helping to create an enduring universe of the future or what it could become, all thanks to Gene Roddenberry’s vision of space travel. RIP Gene, your fans still love you for sharing this with us and many are still continuing what you left behind for inspiration and into bringing something worthwhile to humanity’s films and future ……👍👍👍👍❤️

From time to time I got to play Enterprise, TNG, DS9, and so on thru the movies too. I never get tired of watching them! Not even the original Star Trek, still entertaining to me! Even though it was back in the 60’s when Star Trek first aired, it still today has some feeling of being in the future regardless of the limited technology they had to work with back in the 60’s! It’s fascinating though how many things in Star Trek that was sci-fi back then is actually reality today! Pretty amazing really!

    This presentation was very entertaining and informative. I for one loved the Enterprise series as well as the Next Gen and original Star Trek. Let's face it, the over paid and out of touch executives blotch it. With the right marketing and time slots, it could have easily continued on for additional seasons, become another Star Trek series legend like Next Gen, but certain individuals did not want that to happen. I now have the complete DVD set which I watch every few years. It's like re-living the adventures each time. Perhaps the series a legend now.
