    Not sure how true this story is, but I do remember hearing that at the Premiere of First Contact, Avery Brooks leaned over to Micheal Dorn and said something along the lines of “I don’t remember giving you permission to take MY ship into battle without me” with a contrite Micheal offering a “Sorry Sir.” In return.
    Just one of my own fav out of Universe Defiant moments that I heard of that I just had to share.

    Lack of connection between DS9 and First Contact is unfortunate.
    Even though FC premiered in Nov 1996, its stated Stardate, and FC uniforms, places it firmly in, say May, 1997, giving DS9 six months to come up with a kick-butt story of how Worf and the Defiant held off a Borg Cube singlehandedly, to allow Starfleet to e mass a defense in Sectir 001.

    Well done again with your 100k. I love this 'little' ship. If memory serves the class 7 Warp Core was actually designed to be installed on a ship 3-4 times the size of the Defiant. Also I thought the Defiant could only go to Warp 9.6ish but i could be wrong.
    Also the Borg attack in First Contact must have occurred in or after season 5 as the new FC uniforms did not arrive to ds9 till episode 10 of season 5. So the Defiant would have been around since the start of season 3.

      @@joshuadowdle9691 so then it would be what is its top emergency speed, 9.5 being a sustainable cruising speed. Same issue with voyager, a lot of people think warp 9.975 is her top emergency speed when it is stated in dialogue that is her top cruising speed, which by default has to be sustainable. That said the DS9 tech manual is dubious...it isn't as solid as the TNG one and has a lot of conflicting information from what i understand.

    • @thegreenmanofnorwich
      @thegreenmanofnorwich Год назад +2

      The DS9 tech manual says 9.982, but it has a lot of errors and is generally a bit... eh.
      On screen, the Defiant reached 9.5, but only by discharging power from the phasers into the warp drive. As on-screen evidence takes precedence in star trek, and nothing like 9.982 was ever mentioned in other sources, I would be very, very dubious about taking it at face value.

      @joshuadowdle9691 Год назад +1

      @@02ujtb00626 Ah, didn't know that about the ds9 manual.
      May be a silly question, but If 9.975 is Voyager's top sustainable cruising speed, why don't they always go that fast? At least when they aren't investigating spacial anomalies

    • @02ujtb00626
      @02ujtb00626 Год назад +1

      @@joshuadowdle9691 the faster you go the more fuel you use. That principle hasn't changed. Her high cruising speed would most likely be used for emergencies as it is fast but not burn out the warp core fast, or intel/recon missions. Normal cruising of warp 6 is fine most times. It's like cruising the highway at 60-65 MPH, the sweet spot for long term good gas mileage.

  • @kevinnaber790
    @kevinnaber790 Год назад +1

    I had the Original Series technical schematics set that had blueprints for both on screen and referenced ships and technology. From day one there were more dedicated fighting vessels including the Dreadnaught Class which is what JJ Abrams based the giant ship in Into Darkness on. While the Defiant may have been the first purpose built warship as she lacked the typical dedicated science labs, she was not the first ship to focus on combat. The Constitution class (the Original Series Enterprise) was heavily armed and manned but due to limits in film technology and studio issues we rarely saw the Enterprise use it’s capabilities as the class was designed to hold its own on long duration exploration missions without nearby support and to rapidly interdict if the Klingons should move to engage the Federation or its allies. In Undiscovered Country it is implied that the Starbases and Space Stations served as bases for dedicated defense and combat vessels or a dedicated war fleet. We also see ships like those used for the Jupiter Defense Perimeter in Best of Both Worlds Part 2 and in several episodes of Enterprise that show ships that appear to be purely for defending the Sol System.
    Also in the technical schematics set was a ship very similar to the USS Kelvin except it had a HUGE phaser emitter similar to what was later seen on the Enterprise D Galaxy Dreadnaught seen in All Good Things and a reinforced forward saucer for RAMMING just like Picard did with the Enterprise E in Nemesis except as a tactical design similar to how the Jem’Hadar attacked the Klingons during the later parts of the Dominion War- but with the goal of surviving the ramming attack. Essentially a single nacelle with a reinforced saucer module using a massive phaser to knock out the shields of a Klingon D7 cruiser and then finishing them off with a ramming attack through the neck that connects bridge and engineering sections.

  • @aaronatwood9298
    @aaronatwood9298 Год назад

    Something glossed over, in the tech manual. The bridge is not deck one, but recessed in a bowl in deck 2. To make it a much harder target to hit. Also the defiant top speed was 9.5. It would fly apart if it went faster. It’s top speed was comparable to a nebula class.

    First Starfleet Ship modelled after they shot Gene Roddenberry's ashes into space.
    Of course all the ST ships in the early series and movies were warships except the Grissom. Buuuut we're a peaceful service that shoot at lots of stuff and are packing pistols as well.
    Ablative shields are surfaces that wear away to protect the main hull material. Ablative heat shields IRL were sometimes made of wood. IOW ablative shields might work once or twice.
    The ship violated several of Jeffries and GRs rules. One: Nacelles are not in line of sight as nacelles build a warp field from the field built between them in open space.
    For that 3 nacelle and 1 nacelle ships in the post TOS book were fun drafting exercises for the author, but violated rules the boss had written.

After coming to RUclips for a refresher on the Iconions and their gateway tech, I came across your channel. Love Lt. Commander Adams's narration. Now, I have to go and watch your entire back catalog of videos. You got yourself a new subscriber.

    While not cannon there is also the U.S.S. Monitor from the Star Trek books an all black ship with a special warp drive that didn't have the normal blue lights for the warp drive plus a trans warp drive a cloaking device and more weapons basically an amped up version the Defiant

    The second Defiant still had the NX registry. This was because it would cost extra for it to be changed on the cg and practical models. Also now in season 3 of picard now confirms it still has its NX registry even though it is the second USS Defiant. Starfleet probably thought it would do psychological damage to the enemy. Basically, "you thought you destroyed me. Nooo i got better!!"

    Many wondered what happened to that shuttle model, it having been stolen, then found, then sold makes sense. $20K is a lot of money

    Ah yeah! The Defiant - or as I like to refer to it as - Sisko's Pimp Hand.
    And yes - Best SF Captain ever! Keep this up and I might subscribe to this channel of yours. No promises.
    Edit: okay in my defense I wrote the above comments before 15:49 so I think me and you Trek Central need to sit down with a glass of Whiskey each and see if you have the other half of this medallion I was born with...

    Jellico was a different type of Captain than we've seen before in Star Trek. That doesn't make him a bad Captain. He didn't collaborate as much with his command staff as Picard did and that rubbed them the wrong way. They better chew harder, because that's tough. He's more cofident in his decisions and/or arrogant, and didn't feel he needed to open it up to the rest of the command staff. A four shift duty rotation sounds easier than a three. Theoretically that means less time on duty.

    I would like to see a updated Defiant class in Star Trek Legacy or the Captain Seven era. 8 decks. About half the size or a little bit more than the saucer section of the Enterprise D. The lower two decks can be configured to be either a troop carrier or fighter carrier. Everything else can be the same, just updated for the era.

    As far as available space goes, the Defiant had about as much luxury as a Danube runabout, just twice as many of them (mess halls, sleeping quarters, medical facilities, etc)

    Inspired by Ferrari, temperamental, overpowered, and absolutely goes like the clappers.
    Yep, the Defiant is definitely Italian 🇮🇹

    For many years, NCC-1701 was my favourite Federation ship. No bloody A, B, C or D! Then came the Defiant.
    Pulse phasers, cloak, quantum torpedos, maneuvered like a fighter - oh yeah!
    Original Enterprise was a science vessel, but sort of hmmmmm... a bus. A cool bus, but quite utilitarian.
    NCC-1701D was like a carribean cruise ship with guns. And children - yeah I hated that.
    Voyager was sleeker - I reckon it's a Bentley. With guns. And yet still children, ack.
