      TNG famously wanted a “Cruise Ship aesthetic”, luxury technologies, lots of carpeted space, in the early episodes Tasha even mentions going to some of the Enterprise’s “shops”.
      This sorta philosophy was continued in Star Trek, DS9 they wanted something a bit more communal and it’s kinda like an apartment complex and airport, Voyager they wanted sleek and sci-fi like a special fighter plane.
      For Enterprise, in order to sell the feel of this being much more primitive compared to the other Star Treks, it’s aesthetic was actually based on real submarines-even it’s hull-compact compartments, very little space and capacity for crew, hand rails and bracing handles spaced everywhere. And yes, their uniform is almost literally just an actual uboat navyman’s uniform.

    The skant as a uniform variant actually makes sense when you realize the ambient temperature of Starfleet vessels with human/alien crews is set at 24°C (75.2°F) to accommodate various lifeforms. Appreciate the video mentioning that the TOS minidress was actually Grace Lee Whitney's idea; it gives credit where it's due (Grace came from a stage and dance background and was comfortable in such garb, similar to Nichelle Nichols, who also admitted to liking the outfit), it rightly addresses the issues Grace faced because of it (though she was already a substance addict before TOS, it certainly didn't help), and it helps to alleviate a certain negative view among some commentators (looking at you, TrekCulture) that it was Gene Roddenberry's idea to have women run around in short dresses, which tends to paint him as some kind of lecherous chauvinist. Far from it; Gene may have been a shameless womanizer in his personal life, but professionally he held women in high regard, especially in a time when precious few in Hollywood did.

That during the time between the movies and TNG the red uniforms became a symbol of Starfleet and the Federation across the galaxy. So when Starfleet decide to change the uniforms and go back to a more simpler design the red became the color for Command because it would be those officers who would be making first contact with new races and representing the Federation in other diplomatic, exploratory, and defensive matters.

    Picard randomly in a scant for an episode would have been so freaking bad ass, especially if they didn't mention anything about it and just had it there without comment.

    Man, we're digging deep in the dust bin. I grew up in the 80s, failed The Kobayashi Alternative on C64, and was able to borrow a book from the local public library that had costume patterns in them. The era would have been star trek 4 but the library had a lot of older stuff. The mention of Kirk as a Commodore and the designer of the uniforms were mentioned in the uniform pattern book, which mostly covered ST:TMP. Bro you just gave me a major flashback to a better time.

    I did notice that the male skant in SNW can be worn with pants. In Subspace Rhapsody them Ortegas is hit by the wave a man is walking past her wearing one. If you look closely enough you can see the two vertical stripes on the legs which show that they are the pants and not leggings. Shows that there is a choice as to how to wear them.

    Doctor Pulaski wore a skant, combined with pants, as part of her standard duty uniform.

    Nice to see you back!
    A couple things though... First, Picard did wear a skant in at least one episode, he was greeting someone arriving in the transporter. I believe it was Troi's mom(?). Second, in one of the original series manuals detailing ship specs and all that, there was a mention that the skant was actually supposed to be a dress uniform (before it was dropped pretty much entirely). I wish you would've at least mentioned that second part.

    As an 8 year old in 1987, I never gave much thought to the skant. Now, 35+ years later society is finally catching up!

      @MrAranton 9 месяцев назад +1

      I think I was twelve or thirteen when STTNG first aired where I live. My first thought when I saw the skant was: "Are they going to wear that on away missions into rough terrain? Those legs are gonna get scraped up pretty badly." I also wouldn't want to think about what crawling through a Jeffrey's tube would do to the knees of skant-wearers.
      There are many situations Starfleet personnel wouldn't want to face bare-legged, which makes the skant a uniform they need to change out of in order to fulfill parts of their duties, which would make unpractical. Granted, how often any pariticular crew-member would have to change out of a skant would depend on their exact work, but the skant would remain a uniform variant for certain occasions, not standard wear.

    • @NeilBlumengarten
      @NeilBlumengarten 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@MrAranton Good points! We see them a lot in engineering, not a place you'd think they'd be conducive to the type of work they do. Well, the Jefferies tubes, at least. Many seem to just stand around to push buttons.
      On a larger scale, I've long thought the standard uniform isn't the greatest for away missions. I appreciate the coat in Star Trek II and the tactical vests in Discovery/SNW for that reason.

      I was exactly 9 when TNG premiered, and seeing men in skants is among my most vivid memories watching it. I just loved the idea of a future where all the silly gendered stereotypes had been abolished.

      @@DogsRNice Nice. But the ballcaps were an actual uniform item on ST: ENT. They were inspired by the command ballcaps that Berman and Braga saw on the crew of the USS Houston submarine when they took a tour in prep for developing ENT.

    Fashion: the final frontier. These are the garments of Starfleet. Their mission: to boldly blend the styles of skirts and pants; to explore new statements in intergalactic fashion; to boldly go where no uniform has gone before!

    If I were to make a version, it would be a wrap variant were the folds also act as pockets.
    Like when people use that wrap scarf thing to hold babies.
    It would combine well with the toga like idea,
    In an IRL scenario would lent well to cost concerns, add a glue layer for when you are certain you got it propper, and you now can just take it off and on like a shirt. Fast.
    That can be the everyday version, while the pure wrap is for oflicial events.

    The aggressive progressivism and futurism of Gene Roddenberry stories are my favorite Trek stories. Like they're doing an episode, call him about some random point and he's all "Man dresses, I want man dresses. And a planet of androgenous people." "Gene it's 1988, man." "Fine, do the dresses, make the andro aliens ambiguous." CLICK
