I never wanted to watch DS9, but I grew to love it and its characters, especially Kyra. I grew to lover her and admire her complexity and growth throughout the series. She's a spiritual person, with a turbulent past that has informed her strong sense of justice. I can relate to that. So I'm glad to see her at the top of your list. She deserves to be there!

Raptor: It was a very tough call, the top 3 or 4. In the end I think it was the way Kira was so wonderfully written that edged her out to the top place.

Shocked you could mention Kira and not mention Duet. She clearly displayed her acting chops in that episode. We see heremove from her usual hatred to really come to understand this man. This is one of DS9s best episodes in my opinion. The ending and some of her final comments break my heart each time I watch it. Totally support her being #1 on the list. The only thing I would do is push Riker a bit lower. You can't be a first office and have relationships (romantic or buddy buddy) with the crew. Interesting not just T'Pol and Kira, but Chakotay wasn't in StarFleet either, and he was an actual terrorist in episode 1. I would push him lower and bring Ransom up. a couple spots ONLY because that whole show is written as a joke so I'm not sure how you could compare. If LD was real the captain would be removed for all the crap that her crew gets away with. Great video I subscribed.

Raptor: Thank you for the sub really appreciate it. And i love Duet as an episode. One of my favourites of early DS9. We had to avoid talking too indepth about episodes or the video would of ended up much longer than it already was ^^. I find your comment about riker interesting. It reminds me about the discussion that Archer has with Reed in 'Minefield', about the crew being crew and not friends. I think a good first officer needs to have some sort of relationship with the crew of a more personal type, especially considering most captains wont have that.

    Riker hands down.
Chakotay in a pathfinder/ not strictly military mission.
Spock is the greatest Star Trek character of all time and transcends the category. Montgomery Scott was probably better in the X0 role.

    * Ransom is a good FO! LD is presented from an unreliable narrator perspective of the ensigns, when you see what he really does Ransom is a rockstar that is competent and cares about his crew.

I would say 7 of 9 nails it as a first officer in Season three even when shes relieved of command. She is leading by example. The captain is letting his personal feelings from being a veteran of Wolf 359 suffering from PTSD affect his judgement. By rights she should remove him of command alongside the ships doctor. Instead to keep the peace on the ship she accepts the unjust treatment from a captain that has made it clear that the she is only there as a publicity stunt. Honestly putting Chekotay above 7 is a insult to Startrek, military command sturcture, AND LITERALLY THE VERY QUALIFIERS YOU METNIONED AT THE START.

@@OneTrekMind its called character development. You failed to actually prove or explain how the character was ruined. When its obvious to even a blind person that what we saw was 7 keeping the peace rather then doing what would of led to a mutiny aboard the ship. Its called leading by example

@@tazman2253 Raptor: As stated in the video, the seven of nine we know would never let herself be pushed around like that. That is my opinion based on all of VOY and all of PIC. The purpose of this video was not to give an depth explanation as to how her character was ruined for the PIC show. In short i consider PIC as a show to be very poor with a lot of its story telling and its character development. The attempts to turn 7 of 9 into some wannabe han solo type for the first two seasons did not work, and the justification for that change in her made even less sense in all sorts of ways. Season 3 then turned her into a character lacking the spine to call her captain out on his abhorrent behaviour, something she would never have an issue telling Janeway or anyone else regardles of 'keeping the peace'. You are entitled to your opinion and thats fine. I dont agree personally, but thats why these videos exist to stimulate discussion ^^

Not e enough close Spock Riker then everyone else.. I would take Susan Inonvz, or Kelly Grayson over any one else 9n your lists and neither is in starfleet

Here comes the expected Spock Defense: He's Smarter, Stronger, more Level Headed, has the best Tactical and Technical Mind of the whole bunch, has more Experience, and is a better Diplomat, and thus overall the best and most skilled First Officer the fleet has ever seen, he handles both the Science Officer post and the First Officer post, because he is just that good. He deserves #1 by far above all the others without question, as he is arguably the best character and the face of Star Trek, and I think you both have not watched TOS enough times to truly get the depth of emotion he does show, but subtly.
Now that is out of the way, as I believe that your lack of Spock love is simply because you didn't grow up with him and thus know and understand him a bit better as he was way more emotional than you all give him credit for and thus your lower ratings for him, but the rest of your lists are pretty similar to mine, but I would have Riker #2, and Kira #3, just because Kira can be baited a lot more, and her lack of discipline at times can be a drawback, and I think tactically, Riker is just better, but not by a whole lot as Kira is very very competent. In a straight up star ship fight or fleet battle, Riker would be the better pick over Kira, while Kira would excel more in Gorilla Warfare and having to make do with substandard tech or espionage I would think.
#4, 5 and 6 are real close, but I would have to give the 4th to Una, 5th to T'Pol, and 6th to Saru. Una takes the lead mainly because in lore, shes considered the prototype for what a perfect first officer should strive to be like and was made the poster child for the position when Starfleet was young, while Saru takes 6th mainly because of his pacifistic responses to all the command structure changes and just accepting it without much complaint or push back when really they were letting a traitor/felon usurp his position in his eyes initially the first few seasons.
The bottom spots are similar to both your lists, Ransom as the worst, 7 of 9 is next simply because we barely see her in the position, but I think capability wise she most likely is the best of this grouping, she just didn't get enough time to show it. Chakotay at 8 simply because he was never shown to have any exemplary skills or wisdom above and beyond what is considered expected levels of competency for the position, and so that leaves Rayner to take the 7th spot as although he is a bit rash, he is experienced, able to make the hard decisions, and in what little screen time he had, he showed himself to be very capable, and even likable by putting Burnham in her place more than once when he thought she had lost sight of the mission.
But for your lack of Spock love, this is would have been a pretty decent list, but because Spock was SO far down, I'm sorry but I must ask for your United Federation of Planets ID card as your actions have forced us to revoke your citizenship and deport you to the Star Wars universe. Spock Rules, and deniers and unbelievers can and will be exiled.

Raptor: So i appreciate your response. As for not growing up with TOS, i did. My stepfather was a huge trekkie, and I even used TOS in my univeristy dissertation, which required me to watch it all. I understand that TOS has a group of hardcore fans (we saw this when we did our captains video) but from my perspective it just doesn't hold up, and a lot of its characters don't either. Spock is good, make no mistake I think as a first officer he is very good, very competant...but the fact he was in TOS does not mean he is above criticism.

@@OneTrekMind Well to me, I think he's really the most fleshed out character in ST, but a lot of that is because he's been around so long, bit even so, I just loved the relationship that he had with his fellow officers, they knew his race didn't show emotion as a rule, but yet his friends knew that slight raising of an eyebrow conveyed more emotion than other people's dramatic displays (prime example, Spock's reaction to mirror Kirk and his bunch as he has them thrown in the brig).
I mainly think Spock doesn't get enough love anymore as people just are too caught up anymore in special effects, action and cgi that most can't appreciate TOS as much and forgive me for assuming that was the case here, but in my eyes, to put him at any spot lower than #2 or #3 on a list is just a disservice to the characters accomplishments, as really, can anyone short of Data come even close to competing with him on an even basis in ability? I mean seriously?
He just basically outclasses everyone in pure skill or ability, and it's shown that he's worked exceedingly hard to reach that point, he just didn't ride on the coat tails of being born with superior ability, he put the work in to go along with it, and has served in star fleet far longer than some of the others have even been alive.
Yes he's a Mary Sue character, that's part of his legacy from being from a much different age of television, but you can't fault the character for that, but in the ST universe, if the fate of the whole universe is riding on the capability of the first officer, who else would you choose other than Spock 99.9% of the time?
In fact he's so capable that I would choose him over having numbers 2-4 on the scene instead if my life was on the line, he's just that much more OP than the rest.
The title of the video was based on who the BEST was, and by almost every measure, Spock can meet or exceed the capabilities of every single person on this list by deeds alone.
So that leads me to the obvious answer to the question: Spock hands down, and while I can see some arguments for T'Pol, Riker and Kira, none of the others have that complete package bolted down nearly as well as Spock does, and really, how many times does he have to save the universe to get the respect he deserves, hell he's lapped the others in that department by 3-4 times too!
And to top it off, who else can communicate with George and Gracie! Case Closed lol.
