My top 4 is the same as yours, with DS9 as #5. Rewatches/the ability to binge has changed my opinion--I love Enterprise way more than when it was on the air. It's hard to judge with some of the new shows not finished. What are the chances that you love Disco's 5th season so much that it moves the show up a rank or two??🤔
      1 Voyager
      2 TNG
      3 Enterprise
      4 TOS
      5 DS9
      6/7 Picard/Discovery (flip-flops; both have only 2 great seasons)
      8 Strange New Worlds
9 Prodigy (would move up if more seasons are as good as the 1st)
      10 Lower Decks
11 The Animated Series (two seasons and like only 3 music cues makes it unbingable)

There's a method that is as close to "objectivity" as it can get, but only works if you like TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY equally (when they are at their very best). Try to choose a very small number of essential episodes, the very best from each show only. With Voyager it's easy, and with DS9 you'll end up mostly with Dominion War stuff. But with TOS and TNG is near impossible, since even the weak episodes have a bit of magic to them that makes you want to rewatch over and over.

    • @dressinggownsessions7296
      @dressinggownsessions7296 3 месяца назад +1

Absolutely. When you weigh up what they managed to achieve against the resources of time and money that they were so lacking in, it is absolutely the best. No other series has inspired the same measure of loyalty from fans (although I'd argue DS9 gets a very honourable mention for its masterful use of longterm storytelling). The letter-writing campaign to save the show in 1968 is more incredible than any internet phenomenon.

Wholeheartedly agree. TAS kept the dream of more Star Trek alive at a time when revivals of older shows were unheard of, and imo the art and stories and voice-acting by the originals (even if a tad stilted much of the time) more than made up for the wooden animation and recycled footage. I still wish the show had continued on for many more seasons.

TOS is so episodic you can watch them in almost any order. There's maybe 5 episodes out of the whole run where events in past episodes have any effect at all. Pretty much all that comes to mind is the time they steal a Romulan Cloak after literally "facing" them for the first time earlier and the second episode with Harry Mudd. Guess when they go back in time on purpose too. Both times.
SNW is pretty amazing. Everything, even the lead in feels exactly like the production team from TOS was making it, just today. That lead in is pretty much exactly what my childhood imagination filled in watching the start of a TOS episode too. I still can't get over that, lol.

I totally agree also. Personally I put TOS at #1, because I am of that generation that grew up on TOS, TAS, the conventions and fan magazines (we used to call them Fanzines), all the way to the films. But in those three series, you are in rarified air, and I agree there is very little separating them, you could almost say it's a three-way tie for the top. Personally, I also put DS9 at #2 and TNG at #3. As beloved as it continues to be, I thing TNG has not aged as well as even TOS. But that's just my opinion. I'm a little surprised at how low Enterprise is, while it was flawed, especially in season 1, I liked the characters MUCH better than Voyager. It's hard for me to imagine anyone seeing Voyager as their favorite. It's a great premise, but it was executed "blandly" and the characters are mostly not great (exceptions for Tuvok and the Doctor, I really liked them, but almost no one else). Nothing from the Kurtzman era even comes close, although I agree about S3 of Picard, it actually felt like Star Trek. SNW started out pretty decent and i was hopeful, but it's really gone off the rails with stupidity and it's no better than Discovery to me. I haven't bothered to watch the new animated shows so have no opinion.

TNG didn't start really rocking until Ryker grew the beard. The first season almost made me abandon the show.
By the time TNG ended, it was pretty good.
DS9 rocked from day one and like most shows, got better as time went on. Who knew it would get as good as it did with arguably some of the greatest space battles to ever be put on a television screen. Orville is up there as well.
TOS needs nothing because, despite its flaws, it is and always will be THE FIRST. The benchmark that all other Star Trek shows should have always followed but now we have a mess with 3 SETS OF CANON. What the actual F*ck.
Voyager was a show I really liked as the opportunity to create so much new material was mind-boggling. I think that might have been its downfall though. Some of the writing just got hobbled by itself. Not to mention, it seemed to always want to "feature" a different show character every week as the MC of that episode. That would be fine if there were only like 4 of them but having 9+ of them over the course of the show kind of watered down the continuity of the show.
The only problem I had with Star Trek, in general, was at every turn they were usually "out-gunned" by their enemies or adversaries and always survived. Not to mention, Star Fleet was supposed to be the ultimate "entity" of Universe cooperation but yet, had the weakest armed and defended ship in the Galaxy LOL.

Couldn't get into that silliness as part of a franchise. What I like about the animated series is that I kept thinking how this or that script for this episode might be expanded to live action. It definitely is better written. Also, DS9 for #1 for me and Sisko best captain.

I remember when Deep Space Nine first came out, there was considerable fan blow back (mainly during the rough first two seasons) on the cerebral emphasis (?) on the Bajoran religious aspect of the show, and not as much BSU (blowin' s**t up), so, I'm pleasantly surprised that it now ranks as high as it does. Quite the comeback! Most Star Trek shows started out with great promise but tailed off at the end (yeah, I'm looking at you Enterprise and Discovery!).
After the first two seasons, I think the writers deciding to frame the Bajoran religion more as a bunch of advanced but not omnipotent "wormhole aliens"! They certainly weren't "prescient" (all seeing), as they were constantly shown to be surprised by the actions of the human characters ("why are you here?", "What is this "time"?), which made them seem less metaphysically god-like and more science fictioney (like Q and the "god" in Star Trek: The Final Frontier)!
Another strong aspect of the show, that helped resuscitate the series, was the development of the substantial Dominion War serialized arc, which is the only Star Trek I still routinely binge watch. Also helping revitalize the series was the successful fleshing out of two of the races that were given short shrift in ST:TNG, namely the Ferengi, and the Cardassians. Even the Klingons and Romulans were afforded substantial insights into their cultures.
Then, of course, there were a couple of other relatively minor tweaks that helped the show "get their sea legs" so-to-speak, namely the introduction of the USS Defiant, and then there was the introduction of Section 31, the Tal Shiar, and the Obsidian Order, and the wonderfully enigmatic Garak! The Next Generation was limited to . . . well . . . Barkley, I guess!

This list is the closest to mine ever. Most lists ends up with Discovery and Picard way too high. But this one is dead on, thanks for making it.
I am often split between TNG/ToS as the first spot. I guess what I would want is a ToS-esque series in a TNG setting, where you have more than 3 main characters (Kirk, Spock, McCoy) like TNG, but a more rigid captain like Kirk with rules closer to ToS.The seven seasons of TNG really allowed us to see interesting stories about all characters, including O'Brien (who as spectacular in later seasons and on DS9), and even Barkley, who got closure in Voyager. Imagine ToS having had the same treatment.
That said if we get more "classic Trek" I would not mind a series in the "Lost Era" between ST6 and TNG, or just continue after Nemesis (And no Romulus supernova garbage, I like my Romulans and they should explore them like we explored Klingons with Worf, Ferrengi with Quark, and Cardassian with Garrek and the others later).
If I could chose exist in a startrek era, I'd definitely place my alter-ego fan-fiction character in the TNG area as a young 18yo around late season2 or early season 3 of TNG.
Have a nice evening everyone !

The video game Resurgence deals with Post Nemesis (having a TOS guest character in it who doesn't get sucked in by BS events about a Supernova) and one plays as first officer and a lower decks engineer, it's a Telltale like game. It was so refreshing to see proper Star Trek again and the game was fun as well with a good (imho) story.
For a new Series I'd also wish for it to be either Post Nemesis (ignoring all the 2009-Disco-Picard nonsense) series or one set in the TOS movie era setting as they had the best looking ships (Refit Connie reigns supreme) and Uniforms. They shouldn't shoehorn in older characters though as that feels...well shoehorned xD

This was really fascinating. I really have never thought that Voyager was that good, and everyone I have talked with or read said the same thing. So am surprised on how high it was on the list. I think Enterprise has always gotten a bum rap, and actually it a lot. While I like the actress who plays the lead on Discovery, I really feel that they drop the ball on delivering a true Star Trek experience, although I do like the fact that Pike showed up and they spun it off.

    The proper ranking imo:
    Star Trek: Voyager
    Star Trek: DS9
    Star Trek: TOS
    Star Trek: TNG
    Star Trek: Enterprise
All equal in their own ways…but Voyager season 5-7 was peak Trek. The introduction of Seven of Nine brought complexity to the entire show. Captain Janeway was catapulted to not only having the responsibility of getting her crew home, but also becoming a mother-figure and protector to the Borg Queen’s greatest enemy: the one drone who reclaimed her humanity. Episodes like “Timeless”, “Dark Frontier”, “Equinox”, “Human Error” and “Endgame” showed true Roddenberry humanity of what to do and not to do in life changing scenarios. I absolutely loved that show and it really helped me through some dark periods. I am certain if Gene had been around he would have been greatly proud of what Rick Berman and Brannon Braga created in Voyager (using as Braga once told me - “Roddenberry DNA”) in the show. Therefore, that’s why it ranks number one in my book 😊

Gene Roddenberry does not consider TAS canon, but IDW’s Year 4 and 5 comics clearly are a sequel to TAS. Because Lower Decks considers TAS canon, and IDW’s Year 4 and 5 comics are a sequel to TAS, those comics are at least Alpha and a half canon.

I’ll leave out the show I haven’t seen (Prodigy) and just give a top 10.
    1) DS9: the show that effectively launched Serialized TV and proved you didn’t have to Trek anywhere to explore the true Final Frontier
    2) TOS: a show that consistently overcame the limitations of 60s TV with its episodic story telling, by telling stories worth seeing, and effectively launched sci-fi into the mainstream
    3) SNW: a return to Trek’s roots as an optimistic and fun storytelling medium, lead by a Captain I honestly can’t get enough of on screen
    4) TNG: the show that struggled for three years to find its voice, began mixing episodic and serialized storytelling, presented some of the greatest Trek we could hope for to propel the franchise forward, but ultimately for me struggled to be a true ensemble show and devolved into just telling stories about Picard and Data and occasionally Worf, with the rest given what normally were fairly weak stories
    5) Enterprise: unlike TNG it wasn’t given the chance to find its way after struggling for the first two years before giving us the Xindi in s3 and then finally getting to telling about the origin of the Federation in s4. The show gave me an entire cast of like able characters but struggled for too long with weak storytelling and the unfortunate sexploitation inherited from the success of 7 of 9 in her skin tight suits
    6) Voyager: this show had the opposite issues of Enterprise for me, with normally strong stories over the course of 7 seasons, but a cast of characters that I didn’t like besides Janeway, or who struggled to ever create a consistent identity like Chakotay, and an unfortunate regression to a more TNG like episodic nature of storytelling for a show that screamed out to be more serialized in dealing with the struggles of returning home and integrating the Marquis into a Starfleet crew. Ronald Moore leaving this show to do exactly what this show should have been on Battlestar Galactica is why better stories weren’t enough to surpass Enterprise in my rankings
    7) TAS: the advantages of giving us the fourth and fifth TOS seasons were bogged down by cost saving issues for the cast, and stories that were sometimes not up to the standards of TOS.
    8) Picard: s3 did not work for me at all, I’ve never been a huge fan of TNG as evidenced by its ranking on my list, so pure nostalgia wasn’t enough to keep me interested, I was already bored of the Borg by the time they returned on Voyager, so definitely didn’t need three more seasons of them on Picard, and thought their handling of the Founders proved the writers never actually watched DS9 with how horribly they were used. In all honesty, I much preferred the first two seasons of the show
    9) LD: I do not like this show at all, it feels like someone had The Orville described to them, and decided to make Family Guy Trek, but missed out on all the great episodes of Orville and just heard the fart jokes
    10) STD: I cannot stand this show at all, I forced myself to get through the end of s2 just because I love Pike that much, but this show just doesn’t work for me at all. Characters only delivering monologues, never having dialogues. Making every single thing the most dramatic thing you’ve ever seen, even just running a marathon, and stopping that for yet another dramatic monologue. Characters that I honestly dislike, not just don’t like. Just the absolute worst Trek ever for me

With Rebecca Romijn as Number One (Una) and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M'Benga, who is in my opinion the best doctor in the series, this spin off has the potential of growing more popular if the writing continually improves. Sorry, but Picard's second season was unforgivable; while Raffi's treatment by Starfleet and her subsequent decline afterwards due to Picard resigning in a first season flashback, is perhaps the perfect example of abandoning Roddenberry's beautiful vision and why people hate Kurtzman era Trek. Also Picard being so uneven and Discovery getting progressively better each season is why it ranks ahead of Picard. I wouldn't be surprised if post season 5, Discovery is in the number 8 spot.

I appreciate you gathering the Data, the list looks about right for overall quality and Picard and Discovery should be at the bottom of anyone's list.

I like that TOS, TNG, and DS9 were in the top 3. My personal list would be:
    1. TOS(Started it all)
    2. TNG
    3.DS9
    4. Voyager
    5. Enterprise
    6. Season 3 of Picard
The rest aren't even added since I've tried to watch Disco, SNW, Lower Decks, Picard Season 1 and developed an utter distaste for them. Lower Decks can be better if it was more serious and thought provoking as Star Trek should be instead of an annoying comedy.

I agree that VOY is the most rewatchable show. That's my goto show for random rewatches. I love DS9 but rewatching is not enjoyable if I can't commit to binge the whole thing again.

For the most part I agree. The pop cast ranking is more inline with my thoughts. Good to see Enterprise getting some love. No big surprise that the Nu-trek is dead last.
