I especially liked that a portion of this movie was filmed on the streets in San Francisco without extras. something that hadn't been before in Star Trek moviea and TV shows. and this continues to show Leonard Ninoy's incredible ability as an actor, director, and human being. and his bonus contribution by saving the whales that were on the endangered species list. This is my favorite Star Trek movie. Leonard did such a wonderful job directing it. I would have loved to see him direct more ST movies. He was so talented. RIP Leonard RIP James, DeForest, Nichelle & Majel
They filmed the aquarium parts at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I was in the military in Monterey, Calif (Defense Language Institute) at the time and I remember they were looking for a few soldier volunteers to go down to become possible extras in "some movie being filmed at the aquarium". I didn't go - I could have kicked myself when I found out later it was this Star Trek movie. 😳
The pace and the rhythm was perfect That's one of the things I loved about the movie The Pace and how the other members of the cast Yeah Bones and Scotty having their moment to shine when they went to that polymer factory I love the way DeForest Kelly and James Doohan played off one another It's one of my favorite scenes I always get the biggest kick watching them play out off one another everything about this movie is perfect to me I wouldn't touch it altered or change it in any way!
I get comfortably immersed in Star Trek IV, the Voyage Home, aka "The Whale Movie." It has everything. The best cast interaction, and a focus more on the real world than special effects. In fact, it's the world in _our time,_ with a wonderful satire of our society. We go to Star Trek movies to leave our present and our mores, yet this brings us back to them, giving us an outsiders' view of ourselves. Yet, we are so familiar with the Star Trek characters and their time that we feel we are both the Enterprise crew and Jillian Anderson, the bus passengers and so forth. Can't wait to see you do Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - much maligned, but one of my favourites (and the production story is so epic that Shatner wrote a book about it - if you know the story, you might actually be pleased with the movie they managed to put out)
I have always had a soft spot for Final Frontier. It came out on my birthday, and my friends took me to see it. We had a great time! While it wasn't as good as 2, 3, and 4, there is something fun and rewatchable about it. Whenever I binge the series, which I do about once a year, I never skip Final Frontier. That said, the video will talk a lot of about the train wreck production. I'm almost done with it. I waned to release it this morning, but I'm still making some tweeks. (I spent last night hanging out with my daughter rather than working on editing.😊) It should be up tomorrow morning,
I can't blame them for going with a lighter tone for this film. Star trek 2 and 3 are kind of dark. Star trek 2 has very little if any levity. Its all about Khan being obsessed with vengeance and Kirk being depressed about growing old and we watch Spock die a horrible death. Star Trek 3 is a straight forward rescue caper that is lighter in tone but there's still some heavy moments in it like when they blow up the Enterprise and Kirk's son gets killed. This film is just a fun romp through the streets of 1980s San Francisco.
12:07 - “Accidentally improvised”? I think not. She took her shot when the opportunity presented itself and good for her. It’s a great scene and she is part of why. Talk about a silver lining to her car incident.
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast The same is true of the SW mal-attributed quote "Luke, I am your father". Of course, the actual line is "No... *I* am your father", because it is Vader's response to Luke stating that Obi-Wan told him that Vader killed Anakin. 🙂 Which was true... ... ... ... FROM A CERTAIN POV! 😂🤣😂 #ToxicJediMaster But anyhow, this happens often. "Play it again, Sam" is another faux example, lol. #CasaB
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast another example of a version of this line of "Scotty, beam us up" was spoken by Shatner as Kirk in a TV advert which also featured James Doohan. It was for the privatisation of the UK electricity market in 1990 - Scotty's segments in the advert were all filmed in the Next Generation sets.
"I think it's across the bay in Alameda." When I first saw this movie I was struck by the beauty of that extra, Layla Sarakalo. I thought, "Wow! Who is THAT?" Unfortunately she has never appeared in any other feature before or since that I know of. Meanwhile I don't care for Catherine Hicks.
As much as I love coming home one and two I'm glad they decided on Catherine Hicks over Eddie Murphy giving of course Kirk is love interest The comic relief going on was delivered well by the original crew I think with Eddie and yes the guys hilariously funny it would have been overkill and might have turned out to been a disaster I think the stars lined up perfectly with just the way it was done and directed ... No dispersions on Murphy I love the guy!
You're so right! After I published the video, I thought to myself, "I should have included that old woman who grows a new kidney!" It's one of Dr McCoy's best moments on screen!
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast as someone in critical care transport, I sometimes mutter, “What is this, the dark ages?” after seeing less-than-optimal care. If only we had tricorders and a pill which grows lovely old women new kidneys.
I love the idea of a Russian and a black woman going around, asking for nuclear vessels, in 1986. I mean, the fact that nobody was arrested (in-universe) is a minor miracle. "Yes, hello, I'm from your enemy's country. Can you direct me to you state-of-the-art military vessels? I'm not a spy, promise."
But what I'm about to tell you you're not going to believe it My very very most favorite Star Trek TV episode was a spin-off of one of the least franchises I liked and that was deep space nine So boring I shipped it didn't go anywhere ... And of all the spin-off and of all the episodes and Terry Farrell and that whole crew was awesome "TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS" I so desperately wanted to see more episodes and even a movie that would have interacted😊 other Star Trek Cruise with the original Star Trek crew That was so masterfully done I would have loved to seen a movie like that!
I totally believe you because that is also my favorite episode! 😄 Deep Space 9 is my favorite Star Trek series, and I remember when I saw Trials and Tribulations, it blew my mind. I saw it on DVD in 2003, and I had a small portable DVD player and I carried it around and showed that episode to my family and friends! Give Deep Space 9 another chance, first season wasn't very good, but it picks up in season 2 and just keeps getting better!
Not really I think they wanted stars for Academy Years. The names were Tom Cruise for Captain Kirk and John Cusack for Spock. A less expensive actor Ethan Hawke was also under consideration for Kirk. I'm glad we got VI instead.
But that's a good thing. It meant that James Horner was so successful that they couldn't get him. I personally feel that Rosenman's theme is perfect for this movie. But that's just my opinion.
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast Rosenman's score is a bit of a rip off from Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings.....scored by.....Leonard Rosenman! It makes me think of Frodo and Sam rather than Kirk and Spock. Thanks for the upload, I'm enjoying your videos.
What about the filming on USS RANGER? An interesting story is how they turned the conventionally powered RANGER into the nuclear-powered USS ENTERPRISE -
That's true! You know your Star Trek! 🙂 There is also a deleted scene in Star Trek 2 where Kirk introduces the two and they flirt and smile at each other.
Check out the latest TOS novel, "Lost To Eternity." It follows a podcaster in 2024 who is investigating the disappearance of Gillian Taylor. It's a WILD ride and serves as a really modern sequel to Voyage Home. Decent video, but it doesn't really break any new ground that plenty of other channels have brought up. Most of this trivia is well-known for most Trek fans.
Wow! You just taught me something new. I had no idea about this novel. I am going to check it out immediately. Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I know what you mean. It's always a mixed bag of going totally deep (which is more my cup of tea, but never gets the view numbers) or keeping it fun and light for the audience (which tends to go viral). But thank you for that awesome recommendation about the book! I hope you keep watching my videos and keep giving me awesome recommendations! They are truly appreciated!
Thank you so much. I hope you keep watching my videos. 😀 Actually, I have a good mic, but I think it's the room. Lots of echoes and noise. I'm working on it! 🙂
Nothing explains them leaving Savik behind. She is a Starfleet Officer AND a material witness to the Klingons destroying USS Grisom and murdering David Marcus. I didn't by it at the time and don't by it now. Her being pregnant? Well the post Tos Pon Farr has always been a little wonky to me.
Im finishing it up now. I should have it ready for release tomorrow morning. Then I'll do a video about Star Trek: The Original Series, and then jump into the Next Generation movies!
The first 3 movies were serious affairs and rightly so. A lighter 4 movie was a right choice. One and done. But the humour continued on in the movies where it was unnecessary.
I really like to know how this big badass from Lord of the Rings playing the captain of the OHirum horse warriors can make that transition and play this quirky brash lovable doctor called Bones ... I FIND THAT SUCH AN INSULT TO THE FANS!
So glad you guys decided not on the tiny fish but the big whale that was awesome .... Oh my god Eddie Murphy but then I have to admit there are so many well-known actors you guys picked to play a rolling Star Trek and deliver the goods where I never would have casted them No way know how and I love Eddie Murphy but again I got to say no Eddie Star Trek No but I have to admit as actors continuously inform us: WE ARE ACTORS THIS IS WHAT WE DO ... AND WE HAVE A BAD HABIT OF TYPE CASTING WHEN THEY CAN DO THE METAMORPHOSIS AND THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT AND FUN OF BEING AN ACTOR IS PLAYING DIFFERENT ROLES AND MANY MANY DO HAVE THE SKILL TO DELIVER ... Guys know the story about after the wild ones and the waterfront with Marlon Brando and then he wanting to play an Okinawan in the movie TEA HOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON and the directors and producers said heck no he's a dramatic actor He don't do comedy They turned him down He shows back up the next day in full makeup They didn't know who he was and they said to his manager now you see this guy he's got the part He's perfect and as they were telling him how this guy's perfect and Marlon Brando couldn't have done this Marlon Brando starts taking the prosthesis office face and showed who he was There's another movie I can't watch it enough I love it Was Glenn Ford Machiko Kyo Eddie Albert and Harry Morgan of MASH ... (I spent last night hanging out with my daughter rather than working on editing.😊) It should be up tomorrow morning,
He still didn’t say BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY. So it still remains unsaid.
You are so right. Technically, it has yet to be said. 🙂
Amazing review - thank you!
Thank you for the kind words. I'm working on Final Frontier today!
Very professional account of my favorite Star Trek movie! Great job. Subbed. 😊❤
Thank you so much for the kind words.
It was the perfect movie for the time. And it was exactly what the franchise needed. For me, 2, 3, and 4 are the perfect Star Trek movies!
If had gone with woop instead of wup it could have been Zoidberg’s people.
😂
"More!* "But there aren't any more sardines!" "MORE!" *huge atmospheric disturbances*
Nimoy is a hollywood legend. Great, great man.
I agree! He was one in a billion. Thank you for your comment!
12:07 - “Accidentally improvised”? I think not. She took her shot when the opportunity presented itself and good for her. It’s a great scene and she is part of why. Talk about a silver lining to her car incident.
Haha! That's hilarious!
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast I enjoyed your video. Thank you for all the effort you clearly put into it. Live long and prosper.🖖
Catherine Hicks was in The Bad News Bears tv show and was in the first Child's Play movie.
Are you serious. I didn't know that. Thank you for the info. 🙂
He has still never said "beam me up scotty._ that's not what he said in this movie.
You are 100% correct. He said, "Scotty, beam me up." That means that "Beam me up, Scotty" has still never been said!
😂🤣😂 #ToxicJediMaster
But anyhow, this happens often.
Such a great scene. Did you like my trivia on Layla Sarakalo. 🙂 What? Catherine Hicks was so cute. 😀 Thank you for your post.
❤ great video I look forward to these you forgot to mention that this movie was dedicated to the Challenger crew where did they put that in later on
Thank you so much for the kind words. You're right. I should have included somethjng about the Challenger homage.
It's hard to imagine anyone else besides Catherine Hicks! She was so perfect in the role!
I'm surprised you didn't mention the hospital scene. It's always reminded me of something from an early Woody Allen film.
I saw this movie in the theaters on opening night back in 1986, and I remember the entire theater howling with laughter! It was such a great film!
Brilliant idea to ax Eddie Murphy
Yeah. It could have been bad. And Catherine Hicks was so good!
Jerry Goldsmith(1929-2004). "Gold-stein". Some of his Twilight Zone music was recycled in Kingdom of the Spiders(1977).
Thanks for the correction.
Nimoy directed some of the best movies in the 80s, too bad he stopped after Holy Matrimony.
His two Star Trek movies are excellent as well as Three Men and a Baby.
So glad they did a movie with an environmental theme.
Me too! 😀
The probe is like the cigar shaped UFO’s people have seen.
Really? That's very interesting.
9:22 That certainly doesn't look like a 1986 sound studio.
It isn't. 🤣
Not really I think they wanted stars for Academy Years. The names were Tom Cruise for Captain Kirk and John Cusack for Spock. A less expensive actor Ethan Hawke was also under consideration for Kirk. I'm glad we got VI instead.
Wow! You know your Star Trek!!! I'm excited to hear your thoughts in my Undiscovered Country episode.
My only beef with this the third entry in "The Genesis Trilogy" was them not using James Horner's music.
I always hated TBS for playing 2-4-5 instead of the Trilogy of 2-3-4.
@@truecrimescotsman That's an amazing fact that I did not know! Thank you so much!
What about the filming on USS RANGER?
An interesting story is how they turned the conventionally powered RANGER into the nuclear-powered USS ENTERPRISE -
That's a great point. You know your Star Trek. That ship was not the Enterprise. Keep the info coming!
No, The Golden Child came out in 1984. The Voyage Home came out in 1986.
😀 Sorry, my friend. The Golden Child came out on December 12, 1986. Google it! 🙂
Beam Me Up Scotty was from a T shirt a fan wore to a Trekie convention and it took off from there
That's great! Thank you for the info.
Kirk Thatcher also directed the Haunted Mansion Muppets movie
Cool! Thanks for the info. 😄
Did Shatner and Nimoy have any backend for the Star Trek movies?
It is rumored that both had backend percentage of the films, but they have kept the actual amount confidential.
In the ST3 novelization Saavik also had a fling with Kirk's son David Markus.
That's true! You know your Star Trek! 🙂 There is also a deleted scene in Star Trek 2 where Kirk introduces the two and they flirt and smile at each other.
I had no idea that a white girl in ST4 could've been a black comedian of legendary status. 😂
Haha! 🤣
They are truly appreciated!
cant wait for the next episode ! you got to get a better mic you have a great voice ! Great Narration !
I agree with you 🤣
She was in the film Peggy Sue got married which must have shout around the same time
Oh wow! That's very interesting. Thank you for the info.
Can you tell me if this is an AI narrator? I won’t get mad, but some of the pronunciations are strange. And they shift; NiMOY, NEEmoy, etc
Check out my video on Star Wars and then decide!
Yup. Def AI when they do that.
George and Gracie
Yes! 🤣
It's a good film but the alien probe is silly looking....it really undercuts the whole tension
I like the probe. It reminded me of the monolith is 2001: A Space Odyssey.
He never said beam me up scotty
You're right! He said "Scotty, beam me up." That means that "Beam me up Scotty" has STILL never been said! 😀
13:41 well, technically, no he doesn't.
You're right. Technically, "Beam me up, Scotty." Has still never been said. 😮
what about star Trek the undiscovered country?
Im finishing it up now. I should have it ready for release tomorrow morning. Then I'll do a video about Star Trek: The Original Series, and then jump into the Next Generation movies!
The first 3 movies were serious affairs and rightly so. A lighter 4 movie was a right choice. One and done. But the humour continued on in the movies where it was unnecessary.
I agree with you 100%. Star Trek 4 was just what the franchise needed.
I really like to know how this big badass from Lord of the Rings playing the captain of the OHirum horse warriors can make that transition and play this quirky brash lovable doctor called Bones ... NOBODY HAS DELIVERED THAT CHARACTER BETTER THAN LEONARD NIMOY & NOW "KARL URBAN!" WHY IS THIS THAT THE OTHER ACTORS DON'T HAVE TO DELIVER THE GOODS NOR LOOK OR ACT LIKE THEM ... I FIND THAT SUCH AN INSULT TO THE FANS!
Karl Urban is a modern treasure. I love him in everything he does. He was so awesome in Dredd.
You didn't mention the poor relation - Star Trek: Enterprise.
🤣
They should have pay William Shatner more and NOT let him direct the next Star Trek movie ... the god awful Star Trek V; The Fimal Frontier
Hah! Great point. Check out my video on Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
What a loving and Endearing Movie ... I've watched it a dozen times I could watch it a dozen more times I love the movie Just love it!
True! 😄 It could have worked, but Catherine Hicks was so perfect!
Get real, fans. Some of the original ST films weren't half bad, but they hardly compared to Star Trek TOS.
I have to admit, there are some incredible Star Trek TOS episodes out there. My next video after Star Ttek 6 will focus on the Star Trek TOS TV show!
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast That's probably a good thing, as Star Trek TOS is about the only production worth focusing on.
Wessels 😂😂😂😅😅😅!
Such a great scene! 🤣🤣😅😅😂
Beam me up Scotty no I ntelige t life dectated down here
Haha! 🤣
some of your inserts of people that have nothing to do with ST are a bit confusing...?
Which ones?
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast So this was the first vid of yours that I had seen, but now that Ive watched several others, I now understand the humor you are injecting (with the inserts of The Office, ect)....it IS funny! so never mind..LOL
@ScottyColoradoKid Thanks! Hey, are you form Colorado? I'm from Colorado! Go Broncos!
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast Hey thats cool! Yep born & raised here in Littleton; are you still here? Bo Nix is looking good now LOL Do some more James Bond ones! 🤩
I'm also from Littleton, but I moved out of state in 1999. I still remember that drive out of Colorado in my rented U-haul 25 years ago, and I was so sad. I still visit every year. Last time I was there in 2022, I had to visit South West Plaza where I practically lived in the 1980's and 90's. It's still around and hanging on. I was happy about that. I'm always sad that Cinderella City is gone.
I hope Bo Nix can do it! I was getting excited about Russell Wilson in the beginning, but that fell apart by the end. I just recorded From Russia With Love, and will spend the next few days making the video. I hope to be able to do all the Bond films. After Goldfinger, I'll go back and finish Star Trek. After Star Trek, I'll get back on the Bond films. Keep in touch, my friend!
Any reason why Catherine Hicks didn't wear a bra?
Really? Interesting.
Werewolf by Night was a one shot 'short'. Not really a show .
Thanks for the correct! 😀
Not a huge fan if Iv. It was very silly and it was such a coincidence that the earth is under attack at the exact moment that Kirk and Crew are on their way back to earth....😂
Artistic license and suspension of disbelief absolutely required! 😅😅😅
I like the movie, but not my favorite one. And I dislike the soundtrack, felt it was too different from the previous movies.
I actually like the soundtrack. I think it fits the light hearted tone of the movie.
The score is the worst part of the film. Sounds like a Christmas TV movie.
Man. The score is really controversial. People really hate it. I thought it fit the tone of the film.
illogical - better to have gone back several million years to when whales already existed get one without the problems of modern humans and there problems in the 1980's. It would also be more beliavble, a 1980's women fitting in to easily to the 23 century is a littbe to much over the top.
But going to 1986 was so much more fun for us, the audience! 😃
Krug is pronounce with a hard 'g' (rather than a soft 'g' like 'j').
Thank you for the info!
This is a highly regarded movie, but I've always disliked it, especially the music.
Really? I love this movie so much. And I think the music is perfect for the tone. What's your favorite Star Trek movie?
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast I guess I didn't like the more whimsical nature of it, and the music sounds more like it was meant for a "made for TV" version of a Christmas Carol! Favourite Star Trek movie? Like most people, that'd be 2, everything about that one is perfect!
The lack of proofing the robot-read script is really amateurish. Its not pronouncing the Christopher Lloyd Klingon character's name right, also.
😔
Again, good content but you have to get rid of this AI voice. It is just terrible, obvious, and take away from the great content.
Thank you for the kind words!
Highly illogical
haha!
True fans, who are actually called “Trekkers” get insulted when they are called “Trekkies.”
I think that's a very popular sterotype perpetuated by non- Star Trek fans. 🤣 I'm a trekkie and I'm proud to be called a Trekkie! But I could be wrong. 😀 Thank you for your comment.
Well, my 2 cents is I've been a Trek fan for over 40 years now and Trekkie is completely acceptable.
I had a girlfriend and her brother who were Trekkers. They made sure I got it right! Lol
I've been a fan since the original series aired and I prefer Trekkie.
It’s Trekkie, not trekker.
A script narrated by an IA voice is not my cup of tea.
Check out my video on Star Wars. I'd love your feedback on my voice.
Dude, I thought it was just me!
Oh s*** Now you wouldn't did it You had to bring up the Chris Pine and Carl Irvin JJ Abrams Star Trek Christ if I live to be 200 I will never understand why you guys been backwards with whoever you cast as Spock has got to be spot on on looks delivery and just about every other characteristics and yet all the rest of the characters don't have to look act talk like Sulu like Scotty or Checov or Uhura ... But for a guy who looks nothing like Leonard McCoy Karl Urban delivers the perfect bones that I ever seen Why is it that nobody else goes out of their way and ask for Chris Pine He acts like a more whiny punky Kirk that I ever seen It makes me sick because every time I see a movie with Chris Pine ... Whatever role he's playing he acts more like Kirk than he does when he's playing the role of Kirk in Star Trek I can only blame the damn director writers or producers cuz he's nothing like Kirk in the Star Trek movies and he's always like Kirk and all the other movies and characters he plays pisses me off so f****** much and as for the rest of the characters It's such a hypocrisy no matter who plays Spock is spot on and everybody else it doesn't matter and it sucks ... IT SUCKS BIG TIME!
😂
