Connery playing Sar would definitely have brought up Zardos comparisons. Mikey Spock is even more bonkers. I saw DeForest Kelly on a talk show years before V saying his dream episode was for the Enterprise crew to search for God, find Him, and discover He was actually the devil. Sound familiar?
Another weird point about this movie is Sybok's haircut. The whole movie Sybok has long hair but when they arrive at the "GOD" planet and beam down he suddenly has short hair. I mean I guess it makes sense to clean up a bit before meeting GOD but he really stopped off at the Enterprise barber while Kirk and the rest hung around the transporter room waiting? 🤪

I personally really enjoyed this film. I think the idea for the story is very ambitious. And they found a good way to avoid rubbing religious people the wrong way. (The ending of the comic adaptation is much better btw). Interestingly, this film almost works as a full circle with the Motion Picture, with the whole 'searching for our creator' idea. The roles are simply reversed. In the Motion Picture, an AI was looking for it's creator which is us. And in the Final Frontier, we're looking for OUR creator. They even brought Jerry Goldsmith back. A very interesting coincidence imo. I also love the character stuff and the performances, especially Sybok, he was a great antagonist in the movie. I always thought that Shatner was done dirty by the studio with this film.. especially considering how good of a job he did as the director. I don't think that it's his fault that the movie turned out the way it did. I personally would love to see a director's cut in the style of the Motion Picture. They could add deleted scenes to improve the story, and most importantly fix the VFX! This film BEGS for better visuals! But.. it seems that there's no interest in it in Paramount. What a waste. Still like this one a lot! It's very underappreciated.

The only real gripe for me was the number of decks shown in the elevator the heroe used to get to the top. The decks shown in Scotty's guide to the Enterprise shows 26. Also the time taken for the Enterprise to get to the center of the galaxy make no sense at all. They could've said it was a unknown location that just appeared when the plot needed it to.
The trouble with you is that just like Khan your attacks are 2 dimensional. As no one thinks how it might be the ship is tilted 90 degrees and now they must travel up though the service tubes through the saucer section.

I don't outright hate it but I don't watch it much at all, either. The soundtrack was pretty much the only truly good thing about it.
This movie was just sad to watch. Luckinbill's character was actually not bad, kind of charismatic (which he was supposed to be), but everything else? I groaned at the rock-climbing scene with Spock in those ridiculous boots, at the sing-a-long, at the revelation that Spock all of a sudden had a half-brother, at the escape with Kirk and McCoy holding on to Spock, there was just so much groan-worthy material. Oh, one good thing I remember, Kirk's question, "Excuse me, what does God need with a star ship?" That was pretty funny.

Producer Ralph Winter recently spoke at a viewing of Trek 5 and stated that contrary to what we’ve been told, the choice not to use ILM was his alone. It had nothing to do with their busy schedule but rather he wanted to save a few million bucks. He said flat out that its a decision that almost killed the franchise and he learned a very painful lesson as a young producer. Also, Kirk was always scripted to be at Yosemite. It was Sulu and Chekov who are lost at Mt Rushmore. The cut scene was included on the DVD and they show the image of Rushmore with the added face. But they cut it because they felt it wouldn’t play well.
To me, 5 is the most like the original series out of all of them. It has the comedy of 4, but not non-stop like 4 either. Would certainly take it over the likes of Avatar (and many other much better performing movies). Bones seeing his secret pain is fantastic and horribly tragic at the same time - that alone is worth it alone, as is "......I was wrong"
Yeah, I totally screwed up. Haha! 🤣 weird things come out of your mouth when you're on a roll. But I should have corrected that one. Too late to correct now. I have to live with the cringe. 😁 It's inexcusable.
I always had a soft spot for STV. The chemistry between the characters was spot on due to the subtle humour which Shatner perfectly brought in. He really understood the TOS characters. We saw great sets like never before and Jerry Goldsmith‘s score was so beautiful. In the end Shatner didn’t make a bad movie, his ambitions and visions just clashed with a tight budget and he could not work around it. Unfortunately
Funny how Shatner thought the rock monster looked bad, but tbh it looks better than a lot of the other effects shots that ended up in the film. Heck, the Gorn looked even sillier and that episode is a classic.
Thank you. I am actually re-recording all my old AI episodes. Fans seem to prefer my real voice. I would love to get opinion when I release them. 🙂 Your opinion once
I certainly didn't like this movie, but I always felt it was made with good intentions. For that reason alone, I can't say I hate it. I treat Star Trek 5 the same way I treat a bad episode like Spock's Brain or Turnabout Intruder. But don't get me started on the Next Generation movies... specifically Insurrection. Also, I will take a William Shatner misstep over anything by JJ Abrams
Why are the TNG movies all so bad? First Contact is the best of them but it's still worse than just about all the TOS films. That might be worth exploring, Mr. Totally awesome films. Is it because they gave Data the emotion chip? Is it because Frakes is a TV director, not a film director (see Shatner problem in V)? Is it because the scripts were idiotic? Is it because they kept destroying the Enterprise--that scene where they crash land the Enterprise D and then have a conversation amidst what is obvious set wreckage is so disillusioning--it ruins the magic--just like JJ Abrams trying to pass off a brewery as the engine room of the Enterprise (probably the worst set in all of Star Trek history).
The scimitar battle in Nemesis is riveting but the rest of the movie is pretty awful. I didn't hate any of the features but Beyond was leaden and nearly as bad as Nemesis. It did kill the film franchise.
I saw a video where Patrick Stewart helped ruin Insurrection, due to the fact, he had 'script approval' into his contract and the original ideas were changed dramatically.......Stewart with his failed Picard series has shown he is an actor first, and nothing 2nd. Insurrection was the end of TNG....I still remember sitting in an EMPTY theater after it had only been out a few weeks(I still went to movies then).....
Harve Bennet to Shatner: I have major concerns about this rock creature you fight. Shatner: What Harve did not realize was that it wasn't a rock. It was Rock Monster!!!
The bridge would be used twice in Star Trek 6 as both the Enterprise-A and Excelsior bridges. Then used as the Enterprise-B bridge and as the control room of the Amargosa Observatory in Star Trek Generations.
Regarding the theme music. It has been said that during the opening music "The Mountain" that you just knew this was going to be the best Trek movie ever. Then the theme faded out.
It's surprising the effects were so underwhelming considering Bran Ferren's work for "Little Shop Of Horrors" look pretty good even by today's standards.
I know. Little Shop of Horrors looks so good. Interestingly, Bran Ferren went on to have a brilliant career in Hollywood and Business. Check out his Wikipedia page. He certainly recovered from this disaster. It's a lesson not to let one failure drag you down.
Despite its issues I still love this movie. I like the basic story and everything with Kirk Spock and McCoy is great. The sequence where McCoy relives his father's death is so well acted and directed as is Kirk's refusal to lose his pain. Also Kirk asking 'God' what he needs with a starship is one of THE greatest Kirk moments. Plus Goldsmith's gorgeous score. It's a shame the script didn't get a couple more drafts to fix issues and ILM couldn't do the FX. Maybe this movie was just a bit too ambitious for its own good.
I agree with you. Despite all of its flaws, there is something very enjoyable and rewatchable about this film. I rewatch the entire Star Trek film franchise every year, and I never skip this one. It fits in well with the series. I wonder what ILM's D tea could have done with the special effects.
Being a life long Trek fan, when this movie hit the theaters, it was such a disaster! I remember walking out and thinking 'what the heck are they doing to Trek?'.
That's crazy that you walked out. My friends took me to see this on my Birthday. We had a good time, although we recognized it was dar inferior than the last 3 movies.
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast I didn't mean to mislead anyone into thinking that I left before the movie was finished, I stayed through every agonizing minute of it. Sometimes, sci-fi movies try to be so ambitious with their ideas, that they fall flat...this one did. Sadly, in my assessment, it was a bad movie.
Shatner like Patrick Stewart have proven they both SUCK at actually being in charge of shows now. But actors are like x players, where they ALL think they can coach and be commentators.....They are not captains in real life.
@@captaingenius-o1c Along with my love for sci-fi, I love sports also. As Captains have proven that they're not great directors, the same can be said about sports stars. 'Magic' Johnson proved to be a bad basketball coach, and Michael Jordan was a bad GM; these guys just excelled on the court. And in football, I haven't seen any superstar starting QBs elevate themselves to be a great head coach. Getting back to Trek, only Avery Brooks did a solid job as a former Captain/director. Still he didn't venture outside of Trek to make his name as a full-fledged director. Instead he walked away from Hollywood and into teaching. Our hats-off to Nimoy and Frakes! And all of the lower ranking members who went onto become solid diectors (i.e. Biggs-Dawson, etc...).
It was good to hear that the cast was happy with shatner's enthusiastic ability to get the crew liking being directed by him I'm gladly surprised to hear it! Always been a James T. Kirk fan but I've had major issues with William Shatner With all his negativity of Star Trek first with the conventions him playing TJ Hooker and the S9 things he said about police unbrutality! After experiencing it with Hollywood PD rampart PD and even Arcadia PD
ILM would struggle with Enterprise paint aswell, so it wasnt all theirs fault. It was Paramount executives who allowed it to be repainted. Shatner was maybe overly ambitious with special effects, but blame lies on Paramount too. Why they didnt ask ILM before starting filming if they have capacity. Indiana Jones, Abyss and Ghostbusters 2 were released same year, so if they delayed filming few months, they could have best special effects without competing with those movies.
I must confess that I don't like this film and hardly watch it, but when I do I always think there was great potential in it. A little bit more work on character consistency, less cringy moments such as Uhura's naked dancing, better special effects (especially the shots of the Enterprise) and something a little more dramatic for the final battle than a phantom face being destroyed by one shot from a Klingon disruptor blast. And cut that stupid, stupid scene with "not in front of the Klingons". To counter all that, the scene when Sybok addresses Spock and McCoy's pain, and wants to do the same for Kirk, is the only scene in any Star Trek movie that actually reminds me of an episode of Star Trek the TV show. All the other ST movies took a different approach to Star Trek then the TV show did, but ST5 was more faithful to the original concept (imo, of course) even if it was not done well in the end.
Paramount had little faith in Shatner as a director, refused to give him extra money to improve the visual effects, and questioned why the film turned out the way it did. Man, come on now.
William Shatner has many good qualities. For his intellectual limits, he truly surpassed what would normally be expected of him with T.J Hooker and other director highlights. He's a solid 6 (1-10 directors talent scale for TV) But for movies he's trying to hit above his league. Leonard Nimoy (obviously a man of more intellect) was a methodical, imaginative, research driven director who had the capacity to handle big screen productions. Bill would have commanded more respect if he was just a co-director. Better yet, just stick to his TV show productions. No Shame in that Bill. BUT NOOO....you had to shoot beyond your abilities .....
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast It was like Shatner was trying to change the characters themselves. Trying to make Spock more funny. The whole movie had a forced comedic tone that just didn't come across good at all. I think Shatner directing the movie was a huge mistake. Star Trek V: Spock has a half brother, yeah...but he had to for the script to work better. Discovery: HOLD MUH BEER AN' GIMME THE KEYS TO YER FERRARI, CHUMP!
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast If Shatner (like James Cameron would do years later) had offered to give up part or all his salaries to both star in AND direct, I wonder if Paramount might've given him the time to improve the effects and do some reshoots? Certainly worked in the case of "Titanic."
I do prefer Star Trek V to Star Trek Generations. If I keep my expectations low, I'm not horrified or annoyed by Star Trek V. Maybe it helps that I was really young when I saw it for the first time.
Thank God they did not end the original cast on this movie. It’s a shame that the special effects were so terrible bc this movie had potential. But even had the special effects been top notch, the entire half brother was such a terrible idea that the entire movie was probably doomed no matter what. The ending special effects were beyond watchable and just put the nail in the coffin.
'What does God need with a starship?" was always a good line--and very Star Trek, another uppity alien with a God complex. Too bad it didn't have a better excecution in terms of the effects.
Yeah, Shatner almost made Star Trek, the final frontier for the franchise, until Nicholas Meyer came back to resuscitate it back in, The Undiscovered Country, like he did in The Wrath Of Khan. Take care, and all the best.

Kinda surprised someone hasn't RE-done the effects, as I've seen with the original Star Trek and other movies. It would have helped 5, but it was still a dumb film.
Train wreck isn’t harsh at all. After a few weeks it did well at the box office then it fell off. Shatners co stars felt he was a giving director. It was his editing that was sloppy forcing Bennett re doing it . himself. Paramount should have fired the effects company liked they did for the Motion Picture.
You are so right. But Bran Ferren was simply overwhelmed and under qualified. He didnt con the team like Robert Able did with The Motion Picture. 🤣 Thank you for your comment.
Eh, I still enjoy this movie. It's definitely not the best with the main plot, but all the Kirk, Spock, and McCoy moments are great. The acting was never in question.
A few scenes need to be cut from Star Trek V to make it a better film. It would be incredibly easy to cut the line "I know this ship like the back of my hand" with Scotty bumping his head, and the whole scene of Scotty and Uhura in sickbay could be cut. Cut the scene of Spock holding Kirk and McCoy using the rocket boots in the elevator shaft. Redo all of the starship VFX for the film.

For me the movie story just lacks so much potential. Starting with a story that ramped up tension with Klingons, or followed up on the Klingon fury about him from Star Trek IV, and was a more modest bottle-type movie (a la Star Trek II) would have served audiences much more richly. They easily could have done something with rehabilitating the Bird of Prey, for instance, and had some spycraft or espionage elements to the story. Easily my least favorite Star Trek movie, and very difficult for me to see how it could be significantly improved with just better special effects. And to be honest, the special effects never looked all that horrible to me. And of course the score was fantastic. I also didn’t know Shatner’s cast mates had a good experience on set, which is nice.

Kirk: What does God need with a starship?
I loved that line!
McCoy: "Jim, you don't ask the Almighty for his I.D.!"
Connery playing Sar would definitely have brought up Zardos comparisons.
Mikey Spock is even more bonkers.
I love to think that maybe one day they could finish this film properly similar to the upgrade the original show got with the rock monster ending.
'Its a rock monster it doesn't have motivation '
Wow! That's a great point. But I wonder what Connery woild have done with the role.
The camaraderie scenes between the crewmates are the only thing worth watching
Shatner did a great job with that. The crew had great chemistry on screen.
Amazing! I am a life-long Trekkie and learned a lot ! Thank you
Thank you for the kind words, from one life-long Trekkie to another!
I saw DeForest Kelly on a talk show years before V saying his dream episode was for the Enterprise crew to search for God, find Him, and discover He was actually the devil. Sound familiar?
That's amazing! 😲
Dude. That is seriously funny and just made me laugh out loud just now! 🤣
Maybe! 😉🤣😆

That's cool that you like it. 😀 I like this one as well, and I have a soft spot for it. Its fun and rewatchable and it is pure Star Trek. I binge the series every year and I never miss Star Trek 5.
I agree with you. There is something very fun and rewatchable about this movie. I watch it every year and it always holds up. 🙂

@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast it would have done better at the box office had it had good VFX.
Interesting.
The trouble with you is that just like Khan your attacks are 2 dimensional. As no one thinks how it might be the ship is tilted 90 degrees and now they must travel up though the service tubes through the saucer section.
I remember heading to the theater all by my lonesome to see this and just somehow knowing I would be disappointed. Loved Trek all my life but I just had a weird feeling about this one. I don't outright hate it but I don't watch it much at all, either. The soundtrack was pretty much the only truly good thing about it.
I also saw it in the theater. 😃My college buddy took me for my birthday. We had fun, but it was clearly inferior to the previous 3 films.
I liked it. The let down was the special FX.
I agree. This movie is a lot of fun.
The scene where Sulu and Checkov, two expert navigators try to pretend that they are stuck in a blizzard. That's hard to watch. 🤣

Oh my god! That's incredible information. I HAVE the Star Trek 5 DVD with all the extras. I need to watch it again!
You are so right! This movie is fun and VERY Star Trek!
That was a good scene and very affecting for Kelley to play, as he reported. Maybe this is where Shatner's strengths as an actor's director came in.
Daisy Arnez??? ROFLMAO well he was always seen poolside in his Desi-dukes.

Ha, what could have been... Captain Kirk, marooned and taunted by his adversary, yells into his communicator "CONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNery!!!!"
That's hilarious!
I agree with you. Ultimately, it is a fun, infinitely rewatchable movie that fits in well with the Star Trek series. There's a lot to like here!
Funny how Shatner thought the rock monster looked bad, but tbh it looks better than a lot of the other effects shots that ended up in the film. Heck, the Gorn looked even sillier and that episode is a classic.
Haha! You're right. The rock monster looked better than the cartoony looking "God".

That's hilarious, dude. 😅
I agree! There is something very rewatchable and fun about this movie. And you can't argue, it's pure Star Trek!
The interactions between Kirk,Spock & McCoy save this movie.@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast

Heck, _The Abyss_ SFX were done by ILM's C-team!?! *That* was deep talent.
I agree. ILM's D team would have been more than good enough for this movie.

If that's CGI from the late 80s its pretty impressive (I doubt its CGI).
It was bad CGI for the time. It was worse than the previous films.
Sounds like all this needed was ILM. Shatner made a heroic effort.
Well, and a much better story. 🤣 But ILM would have been a huge improvement.

After experiencing it with Hollywood PD rampart PD and even Arcadia PD
It appears that whatever happened during the TV show was water under the bridge by Star Trek 5. They all continued to be friends long after.
Thank yoy for thr extra info! You sure know your Star Trek 5! Keep the information coming for my other videos!
Thank you for your comment.
Paramount had little faith in Shatner as a director, refused to give him extra money to improve the visual effects, and questioned why the film turned out the way it did. Man, come on now.
Shatner was lucky Nick Meyer said No, or they would have fired him and rellaced him with Meyer. Meyer was smart not to want to step into that one.

Thank God they did not end the original cast on this movie. It’s a shame that the special effects were so terrible bc this movie had potential. But even had the special effects been top notch, the entire half brother was such a terrible idea that the entire movie was probably doomed no matter what.

I wish they had let Shatner do a modern director's cut with CGI and maybe he would have fuxed some of it. Although nothing could help the story.

I honestly see what ST5 could have been, i still enjoy it more than ST1. St5 feels more like an average TOS episode. Besides the obvious fx failures and other movies, there were many other factors aginst this movie. William Shatner honestly didn't do bad as director, the biggest sins were the FX and the editing.
"Deck 78"😂
I agree. I still maintain that this movie is fun and highly rewatchable. And it is pure Star Trek!
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast Use your normal voice, the Cadence of the voice in this was rather painfully bland and full of overrun sentences. Its the perfect Voice for ST 1... or a MacPlus
Star Trek 5-The search for a new director 🤦🏻
Ha! That's a good one. 🤣
I actually liked the movie from the get go... The ending was a little weak.
I agree with you. It is fun and rewatchable.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. I agree that Goldsmith's score was fantastic. I hope you check out my next video, Undiscovered Country.
