I adore how Singer Phil HAS to use his Drummer Phil hands while he's singing! You can tell he just can't help it. Love It!
Phil & Chester sound so great together -- as in the instrumental introduction to this song.
This song kicks ass, why is there no music like this anymore
I don't think most modern musicians have this much talent.
There isn't music like this anymore simply because most bands aren't this great
Phil’s voice is so awesome. Honestly one of the best ever. And the band is superb.
was
@@geftiler2112 Rick everyone and everything has their day.
You betcha !!!!! 🥰😍😘
You should hear Peter Gabriel’s voice the real lead singer of Genesis.
Gêne is for me the greatest progressive rock band.
Without any doubt.
An underappreciated rock band with a great sense of melody. I love Genesis so much.
Underappreciated really? I don’t think so
Yea. Genesis was never underappreciated. They were one of the biggest acts in the 1980s, not to mention the 1970s.
👍
Love your comment!!! I agree with you 💯 Percent!!!!!
Damn right, I love Genesis
This is the best vocal of this song ever. Phil effortlessly goes from chest to head voice perfectly on pitch.
so under rated as a musician
Absolutely love the man !!!!
So damn talented !!!!!!
Honestly, this band is on the short list of the greatest bands of all time. Easily as significant as the Beatles. The songwriting skills and performances of Genesis are inspiring, emotional and fun. No one sings like Phil Collins. I’m so glad he shared his voice and his heart.
No band will ever be as significant as The Beatles - and Phil would be the first to say so!
@@gutgolf74Genesis is the best band in the world.
The Beatles the stones Pink Floyd genesis the doors zeppelin yes The Who moody blues the cars ! Best live shows genesis and Pink Floyd live aid Phil
100%
Agree. Not about the beatles comparison, but certainly about the short list statement.
Phil casually putting the sticks down and walking to the front of the stage to sing is so badass.
WHEN YOUR BACKUP DRUMMER IS CHESTER THOMPSON, YOU HAVE A BAD ASS BAND!
Phil has had a lot of crap thrown at him for years now, I have never understood it. This just shows what a brilliant performer he is and he and the rest of the band deserve to be recognized for what they were, one of the best ever
Exactly! Just went to musicnotes.com to check out the score, pretty easy actually in the key of C but they had a unique way of playing. Love this song.
Damn right.
He gets the blame for “dumbing down” the band, but I think it’s bull considering both Mike and Tony wanted to simplify things as well. They always made good music, regardless of length.
Really good rock tune. Collins does it on Face Value and gives it a completely different take. Brilliant, both.
(the base line is so good, the drums are an equal element....Collins really elevated the drum set to be equal to or more important musically)
@@ForceMaximus84 Musicians of this caliber have to change styles every now and then. Peter Gabriel also reinvented himself a couple of times. For them there's no point playing 'The Cinema Show' or whatever til they die, they'd be bored to tears.. Rush changed a lot, Yes did, people like Miles Davis always moved on etc
I always get goosebumps at the beginning, when the crowd hear that keyboard! Pure energy...
Ditto! Listening to Three Sides Live and hearing the crown just as this song starts gets me cheering too
Alfonso Eljaiek Me too.
My 9. yo son and I saw them Nov 2021... That's the song they kicked the concert off with! WOW! I felt the same...
Damn…Mike is a stellar bassist. I’ve tried to capture is slippery runs and slides for years. It shows he understands the groove of this genre. That is the genre they created. Some bands are a category unto themselves.
Definitely underrated bass player and songwriter.
I've had this album since it came out, but got away from Genesis for a long time. I pulled this out recently and now I can't get this out of my head- nor do I really want to. Mike's bass line just slays me on this track. Is that an Alembic bass?
Very talented and underrated drummer Chester Thompson on drums kickin absolute nalgas !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's amazing how Phil Collins does drums, and being the frontman as well amazes me
Duke. A most brilliant album.
Greatest. Album. Ever.
As a fan of the Phil Collins Genesis era, I say, yes, my favorite along with "A trick of the tail."
I gotta say, while I love Hackett insanely, Daryl Struermer is really unsung and has really tasteful chops on the guitar. His solos in this and his renditions in Los Endos are really cool
It was a true alignment of the stars the day Phil saw the ‘boxed’ ad for a drummer in the Melody Maker and he became part of the greatest band ever.
Duke. One of my 'Desert Island' albums since 1980. So brilliant.
I had this on tape for years and years until I finally wore it out..I now have a remastered copy on my iPhone 😃
ravello99
@@Ravedaze.
Same.
The band sounds so together and tight here and Phil's vocals top notch.
It wasn't until Duke that Phil began to really develop that low, soulful growly voice, and he didn't master it until Abacab and Face Value in 1981, which is when this concert is from. This is really peak Phil, in terms of singing.
It's crazy how full of energy they look, given how solemn and serious they always looked with Gabriel as the frontman
Yeah man I mean I love all these guys even Peter is a legend but I came into Genesis with “Follow You Follow Me”
@@Infinite0396
Same.
@@Trobtwillis yeah and somehow that means we don’t know music if we admit we only started listening to Genesis after “Follow You Follow Me” but hell it’s the truth
@@Infinite0396
I'm not sure if I understand your point. All I know is that I heard "Follow You, Follow Me" on the radio when I was 10 years old, and I was blown away.
It's now 46 years later. I've been a huge Genesis fan for decades now. I have heard all of their albums, and I love their whole career.
@@Trobtwillis many hardcore Genesis fans consider that song their downfall and they also loathe the Phil Collins era of genesis. They prefer the Progressive Rock version of Genesis to the Genesis that topped the Charts. You aren’t aware of any of this??
One of masterpieces of Mr.Phil Collins and Genesis.. Brings me way back in great 80s music.. It stays thru time.!!'
I'm 59 years old and grew up to Genesis seen them 4 times in concert my favorite was in Maple leaf gardens in Toronto
damn what a voice he was frigging insane live
Nassau Coliseum - Uniondale - Long Island - New York!
I was there - best concert ever - UNFORGETABLE
Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens! They had the Phenix Horns from Earth Wind and Fire on stage with them to do No Reply at All and Paper late!
That's Nassau Coliseum? The description
doesn't say. I saw them 8 freaking times, and I can
notate every time and venue and tour. They were simply
the best, which was why I saw them eight times. Freaky thing
is I happen to live on Long Island currently.
This arrangement is the best-ever Genesis. Hard to say that but Phil was launching his Face Value record, a true masterpiece.
Best band ever.
"Which version?"
"All of them."
Word!!!
@@CurtisBooksMusic other than maybe ray wilson, but even that era isn’t bad
You can really tell these guys LOVE to play music together!
Damned amazing! Thank you Genesis, thank you Phil Collins.
I'm a big Peter Gabriel fan but man does Phil have a great voice. Whoa!
Tell me a single good song with Gabriel on vocal while on Genesis? For me they are all shite
@@resireg PG admitted PC was better a singer. PG never said he was a great singer, but it worked. bob dylan can't sing.. and I can't endure any of his material.
@@WintersWar but still, they could not score a single hit with PG as lead singer.
@@resireg I can't knock any member of the band, they are my all time favorite. Let's not forget that Peter crushed it with his solo career in the 80's/90's.
@@WintersWar exactly, that is my point. In order for Genesis to thrive, he had to leave. Sometimes too many leaders means very little followers.
I say Duke is their best album in terms of depth, flow, and sound quality,
It seems they moved away from fantasy style prog rock to a more feeling-from-the-heart sound. Phil's voice is better than Peter's anyway, imo.
The 2007 remaster is ace. The drums slam so much harder
Everything about this is magical... and it gets better with time. Thank you Genesis
Duke was the launch of the Phil juggernaut that would rule 1980's radio. Amazing.
The greatest group ever
The song reminds me of my parents divorce it was a painful time for me but this album along with permanent Waves by Rush allowed me to see the light incredible musicianship. The Duke album brings me directly back to that time. I can smell this album the winter the rotting leaves of New Jersey trees. I do believe this is one of the best albums ever made about leaving a painful situation
Duke & ...and then there were three helped me through a hard time in college. They were no longer new albums, but that didn't matter. I just felt like Genesis had written a lot of songs which expressed emotions similar to mine.
I had a dream that I phoned Mike Rutherford, and then Tony Banks, thanking them for writing those songs. Of course, Phil Collins was becoming a prolific songwriter too when they made Duke.
Oh Phil, the voice is so cool
0:50 Perfect handoff. Touchdown
PERFECT vocals. Wow! 👍🏽
Love these videos from the 80s, the last good era for music. Wish I could go back in time.
They had such a unique and recognizable sound and style. There's not a lot of bands that achieve this level of continuity through their music where it always sounds like the same band and they continue to progress while making more/better material with the trademark sound they created.
Mike and Chester are seriously in the pocket on this version!!! Love this.
Became a fan of the band in 71' and I'm always drawn to the 70' to 77' era but I have to admit that the Duke album was the band at its best musically and the album itself is masterfully engineered. Of the entirety of the Genesis catalog, Duke is the best album when it comes to musicianship and sound quality. Having seen the band 5 times, the Duke tour was my last time seeing the band live but I was happy for them and the success they enjoyed through the 1980's and into the 1990's albeit my musical tastes went elsewhere.
Che bravi che sono Santo Cielo ! Bravi , bravi , bravi ! Grazie Dio che ci hai dato i Genesis !!!
Is it just me or is Phil adorable in this??
In 1981, we were all so cute.

i just can't get over Tony's killer synth intro!! soooo fuckin awesome!!!!!!!
I believe that he is playing the ARP Quadra.
He is also playing the Yamaha Electric Grand Piano.
Fabulous:
One word describes this opening track from (arguably) their most accomplished album
"Exultant"
It was so of its time.
Love, love, love Genesis.
This is one of my all time fave songs. JAM!!!
CHESTER! (Zappa's loss was Genesis' gain)
Superb drumming!
I Preferred Chester's, drumming at first. Then I saw Phil on Robert Plant's tour 83'.They are both great!
So sad he won’t be on this last tour.
Their most underrated post gabriel hit!
One of the best bands, sexy Phil awesome voice.
This is pure magic.
This is beautiful.
So many of his best songs were never on the radio i loved his mucis almost ever song most singers arent as great as he Always been i was hocked on him as a little girl forsure...
Theeee most beautiful guitar riff , known 2 man, at least as far as I am concerned 😢😮😊😮!!!!!!
yup goosebumps!!! simply perfection!!!
This is one of their greatest songs hands down!
What a great band, my favorite no doubt
I'll go to the mat with anyone... there is music and talent but Genesis wrote the book!!! This is a snapshot of Phil's prime. Genesis was youthful and gawdam talented.
@Posers needtogo - there's a lot of truth in what you write, though you do need to tone down the insults ! - personally, I'm a die-hard Genesis fan (now in my mid-50's) and from the eras you mention (first discovered Genesis in the mid-70's), and with your perspective, you're right. Having said that, PC was an amazing drummer when he was young (and I say that as an ex-drummer myself). He certainly brought a lot to the table, you cannot deny that. For me, Duke was where it started to get very pop-y and the magic Genesis formula for me, i.e. odd time signatures, amazing melodies, breathtaking keyboards etc etc etc was what Genesis were really about. Funnily, the first album I bought of Genesis, And then there were three.... is about as 'pop' as I like it with Genesis. Carpet Crawlers is possibly my all time favourite, the lyrics almost want to make me cry (and it actually has very little drums in it!).
Appreciate your point of view jez but for me...before Duke save for and then there where 3...it was a bit too floral and old sounding. I feel same way about rush. Moving pictures and that 80s syth and guitar sound was what I preferred. I do like marillions early stuff a lot more. Try script for a jesters tear and fugazi. Prefer the sound.
Amazing song and drumming😍
fantastic band fantastic song...seeing them live was just awesome
I saw them on this tour at the old Forrest Hills Tennis stadium in NY (where the US Open used to be played) in 1981. Phenomenal, then and now!
0:50 Epic.
JIM SMITH SOMEONE IS STEALING YOUR JOB
This is a better version than on Duke. Just awesome!
Steven Robinson Its a good version, but its not the same without all the intro.
@@madmanmoon8978 I think it's better without the full intro
@@Punttipate62 disagree.
No way, not with that edited intro. The thing I love the most of Duke is its epic opening.
NEVER.
Chester Thompson was with them for a "LONG" time, stellar drummer. Steve Hackett was still in the band on Seconds Out live album as well. Three Sides live is just an amazing live album with the studio cuts on it to boot.
Luv this whole alblum...3 sides live.Going 2 c an impersonator group.I cant afford genesis tickets anymore. Thanks 4 the memories threw the yr though!
Just amazing !
@ch olsen, Genesis was actually one of the first bands to use a personal monitor system. They each had a small mixer to be able to balance their monitor mix. So he's probably turning up or down Phil's voice or something. Way ahead of their time!
Brilliant melody!
Beats the album version. That beat is so funky!
greatest ever
eydtdghghye
such amazing lyrics!! just an awesome song
Phil Collins's voice is underrated. He is a fantastic singer, songwriter and a multi instrumentalist. He can sing, play drums, play guitar, play the piano, I bet you he can play all the instruments on the stage on the quiet. He is a bit of a Mike Oldfield.
Fun fact: Phil Collins played drums on Mike Oldfield's "QE2" album.
I don't think that Phil plays much guitar, but I could be wrong.
This is the BEST version
I was there! Eilenreidehalle Hanover Germany 1981
SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!
How can i say? This song is perfect.😂🎉
The quintessential genesis sound.
This is such an amazing song!
This song is underrated and album underrated !! Genesis is the best band ever solo and as a group these guys are amazing
The sound quality on this is outstanding!

Chester Thompson. Sublime as always.
Chester just back there workin, jack.
Extraordinaire.
I could not love this more
BEST TOUT DUKE
At the Rosemont in Wheeling, Illinois in 1984? Wow. What a show.
This song and and Eleventh Earl of Mar are my favourite songs with Phil on vocals. Two great songs on two great albums. I really don't know why he gets so much flak.
Tony Mike and Phil must have made a collective decision to go down the pop rock route together.
Once Steve left that became the plan
yeahhhhhhhhhhhh love it
I keep coming back.
Hate this fucking moment when this song ends.
That's why I've got all of these videos on repeat 🎉❤🎉❤
El baterista y tecladista excelentes ,llevan la carga de la canción,
What. A. Band!
Always🌟❤️
Genesis were the Bach of rock.
freshman year college 1980 Mike Weiner turned me on to gabriel genesis then collins and then THIS ALBUM CAME OUT INCREDIBLE!!!!
Long live genesis
Phil Collins's solo version was done up like a Michael Jackson song. It's said he came up with the idea of reworking the song this way while an engineer was running through the master tapes of Duke, and at one point the tape for "Behind the Lines" was played back at a faster speed, making Collins sound like MJ.
Great song
Amo ese tema. Maravilloso. Gracias.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
