Later that month they played at the Roxy Theatre in LA. We slept there all night to by tickets and Collins and Rutherford SOLD the tickets in the two ticket booths. It was my birthday and I asked Collins to sign my drivers' license ... and he did it!
I have searched and searched for a drum cam of Chester and Phil for the first two minutes of this song. Cant find it. Wish I could. Incredible musicianship from these two.
This is as good as professionals can play and perform. Damn. Genesis is among the finest bands of all time. Every bit as special as The Beatles and other early pioneers. Phil Collins voice is one of the best in human history. He is conveying some deep personal hurt in this tune. He was able to turn it into masterpiece.
I agree. Duke was my introduction to the band when I was 15 years old. ..back in the day. And it's obvious the band members were still invested in the craft of song writing. Duke is one of a kind. A prog album with elements of Motown and perhaps even the Beaxh Boys. Phil at his best, juxtaposed to the classical sensibilities of Tony and Mike.
@@pauld205 Agree totally with your analysis there (although I have been a fan since 1971 and witnessed their various "incarnations"!). I have tried desperately to like their post "Duke" stuff without success sadly. This is the last albun/tour I have any time for. Compare this set list to the "Invisible Touch" 87 tour for instance....the latter is just DIRE in my opinion!! Hoping to see Steve Hackett later this year ( I live in the U.K).
I travelled over to England where I saw them on this tour on April 19th, their second night in the Manchester Apollo. I was only 20 years old. Magnificent!
That Phil/Chester power intro. Classic late Genesis. Almost like an announcement: The Peter Gabriel Era is long over. Deal with it. It was hard to let go for many of us. But once we let the new incarnation play on, we grew to like it, too. A new band, a new sound with lots of undercurrents of the old sound. They evolved superbly.
I have seen tons of live shows...but no one was close to Genesis! the incredible sound, the unique light show; phil's voice and the 4 other lads reach a level of perfection
Tony Is there footage of the periode Genesis went on tour after they finished And then there where three? I rember they had a fee mirrors above the stage.
Tony Hill ~ Chester _IS_ an amazing drummahhhh. He played with Zappa! Billy Bruford however is my favorite drummer EVER and as you may know played (as well as Chester) on the Seconds Out tour. :D
I saw them on this tour on April 19th 1980, their second night in the Apollo in Manchester, England. I was only 20 years old. I’d love a DVD/BluRay or a CD of the show, if there’s one out there to be had…..
But wait a minute I don't understand it's getting stronger, hold my hand Don't want to leave you I don't want to go But I'm a' losing all control Can't you see me I'm slipping away I can only stay if you've the will to keep me here Oh Lord
Phil is a super entertainer. He’s got the “it” factor. I prefer his solo version of Behind the Lines. It’s more jazzy and upbeat. Duchess is a superb masterpiece. One of my all time favs. How do you pick one fav song from Genesis?

I just think "What if?" If they had just left Mike Rutherford alone. If they had just left Phil Collins alone? Let 'em play bass and drums. I personally believe that Mike Rutherford would have become a guy like Chris Squire or Geddy Lee - that guy would have become a monster.
Well considering Phil can't pick up a drum stick at age 70, if he HAD been left alone he likely would have "crashed", fizzled out and been washed up by age 55. Thank God Chester could play drums for 15 years.

AWESOME STORY!!
Wow. What a pair of legends! Great story!
Freaking awesome 😎
Lucky you!
That's so neat!
I've never met Phil, Tony, or Mike personally.
I did meet Steve Hackett. Remarkably nice person.
If I had a time machine, this is where I'd go. This gig, this location.
I have searched and searched for a drum cam of Chester and Phil for the first two minutes of this song. Cant find it. Wish I could. Incredible musicianship from these two.

I think those of us the loved Duke experienced Phil's divorce along with him.
Realmente es emocionante y desgarradora la voz de Collins
Sin oalabras
Who really wrote the words though? Sometimes it's Mike or Tony.
@@Trobtwillis Tony, Phil and Mike. And Phil did a version of "Behind The Lines" for his "Face Value" album.
@@AfterglOw-1977
Yeah, the funky version.
My god, how could anyone do anything but LOVE this performance?!
This would have been the tour to see in my opinion. Before they became super-popular.

It was , the pervious tour lighting was superior, the MIRRORS on ATTWT tour!!

Beautifully said.
Exactly.
In my opinion, Genesis made great albums & concerts with Pete. They also managed to make great albums & concerts without him. I ❤ their whole career.

Mike Rutherford sounds heavenly..
Greatest live band can't wait for 9th DEC, last domino tour welcome back boys
Imma be there too!
(Hopefully, if ol’ phil here is doing well🤞)
Brilliant musicians this is my favourite you can hear the audience going mad
I saw Genesis front row dead center at the Aud in Buffalo, NY on their Abacab Tour. Won the tickets on 97 Rock and will never forget it!
Saw them at the Aud in 80 on this tour, fantastic
Duchess is a bad ass song.
what ??????
Indeed me lady a true classic....

I think that means that it is a good song. Slang sometimes uses antonyms, like when you call your fat friend "slim" or "tiny."
Professional musicians.
damn they were so insane live amazing!
Saw them at Peterborough (I think it was this tour) - amazing. Mind. Blown.
Yes they were, ther lightshow was YEARS ahead of everybody else !
Chester is a really amazing drummer; superb!
Back then from '77-'80 Chester stole the show everytime!
Tony

Look up Genesis Columbus 1978 8mm. Awesome ATTWT show footage. Also Japan 1978.

Genesisに出逢えて良かった🤭🥰👍❣️🇯🇵
Brilliant musicians 😀👍
Obviously I love Hackett, but Struemer really is worth his own salt as a guitarist. Dude doesn't get enough props cause he really shreds in this song
phil really sang great then! top of his game...
Dos clásicos totales, mi admiración por la calidad total de su producción musical.
Monster bass sound
Moog taurus power!
Outstanding. Really great. What great music.

MAGICAL
Crackling with Energy~~~~
In my own humble (yet conceited) opinion, Genesis is one of the most interesting & exciting bands in studio & on stage.
Needs to be a blu ray of this concert.
Just pure brilliance
I think Mike just made this song his, great bass playing
Brilliant!

Well that's all very well. But Phil and Andrea both committed adultery. Some people just aren't cut out for marriage.

This footage wasn`t used in Old Gray Whistle Test. In Test Phil wears blue shirt, here yellow. And the edit is very different.
I think they spliced 2 Philly shows together.
G.o.a.t.
♥️♥️
Sehr schön
Phil looks like Joe Cocker here :)
And he looked and acted totally other way only one year later.
Erin Taylor He has a Manson thing going on
Nice upload! Where did you get this video .. its before cell phone video and even camcorders. Thanks much!
As with the Dukes travels live at the lyceum, probably recorded by the BBC for the old grey whistle test :)
I want to know who the 14 idiots that gave this video a thumbs down are ?
I’d steer clear of them myself. Never know what you’d catch…
Holy Fuck.
Is Phil playing some of those sounds on intro to Duchess? If so, what are they?
American's genesis from 78 at .......
Where is introduction, where Phils talks Duke`s story?
It’s Duchess and there is no introduction.
@@AgreetoDisagreeShow The Duke was concept album and there was the story of Duke Albert, the born loser.
Newb question -- who's the touring guitarist during this period?
Daryl Stuermer
He was the travelling guitarist almost from the beginning , post Gabriel-Hackett era. And of course Chester Thompson on drums
Still the touring guitarist now too!!

Guide vocals cut off is a true non sense. Why that ?
Phil, Kenny Loggins called-he wants his beard back!
This is, Three Sides Live, album
Anyone know where this is filmed?
was never the same after Chester was kicked out.
Poor sound quality unfortunately. Top tunes though.
Cocaine is the third star tonight.
