Mike's Shergold detachable doubleneck. Sounds great. Only weighs 85 pounds too. Any time Phil is wearing a Hawaiian shirt, you know it's going to be a good show.
What a treasure. I can watch the coda at 5:30 a thousand times and never tire of Collins’ reinvention of the song’s melody and phrasing. The way that he comes in late, singing around the beat and swinging the phrase to punch precisely with Thompson’s bass drum-it’s so subtle, yet so beautiful. A belated thanks for tidying up the audio and the video, and for posting it.
This is my all-time favorite Genesis song from my all-time favorite Genesis album. Trick of the Tail was Phil in his prime - right alongside his magnificent fusion work with Brand X.
I like year 80 Phil Collins best, he was rough and self-confident, agressive and rocking. Later he became more all-family entertainer, quite cheesy one. . I would like see his similar type again, now, when he is quite old and rough again and tortured by health problems etc and has no need to be loved by everyone.
Sad for the latter comment, but, very true for the prior. Phil was a very aggressive, and progressive rocker that I loved, and love. Cheesy would be correct, in my opinion and soul is still there. But, It all fell apart, in my opinion after Genesis. So many songs to make the mind wonder left with Genesis. It's sad that they are no more... Great, great stuff that they performed, and that we had the privilege of having in our lives.. Stuff such as this only comes once in a lifetime, ya know.... It will never be again... Hang onto it forever...
Saw them in Vancouver in '84 - they started out the show with this song and the place went wild!!! The whole show was amazing. What an album A Trick of the Tail is…their first after the departure of the pivotal presence of PG….brilliant!!
I saw them on this tour. Duke was out so the writing was on the wall for the old fans. The 1980 tour was the last of its kind and they hit a lot of smaller venues in the UK. Watch Phil's Tambourine near the start to get a feel of the exquisite beat of this song. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike them for moving into the mainstream, the old stuff is still there. Genesis have become a trans-generational band and there is nothing quite like them.
They still did a few tours with lots of the older, progressive stuff. Abacab was brilliant.Dodo/Lurker had a Trick of the Tale vibe. Even Mama from the next album. But you are right, this was the end of one Genesis era, and beginning of a new, more commercially accessible version. By Invisible Touch, i was done sadly.
Even "We Can't Dance" still showed they had a lil' prog left in their blood. Watch "Fading Light". There is an awesome live performance. A long instrumental interlude which is as good (almost) as Duke's Travels.
I saw this live for the first time about 2-3 years before this clip. I’d only been turned onto Genesis a few months previous but had listened to everything Genesis by the time I saw them live. About 45 years ago. And yet here I still am.
Blank paper, unplugged guitar, untouched drum kit, keyboards turned off. Then, these few men walk in to that clean slate and this is what they create. If there is any better proof of a higher power, I don't know what it is.
GREAT WORK! Thanks for the clean up. This sounds great! :) Phil's singing and emotion @ 1:48 to 2:03 is exactly why I think this is as good as it gets. The entire song, as well as the entire concert is simple phenomenal.
Hi, David! I think it's because a lot of more recent Genesis listeners were born in the digital era of CDs, DVDs, MP3s and whatnot, so the idea of having a vinyl album and a turntable and listening through to the whole thing as the artists intended is alien to them. Giving every track equal attention and respect was the norm back then. The artists were taking you on a journey, and it would have been unthinkable to talk, yawn, or not listen intently to everything. So (to us) Squonk was no less important than anything else on the album. In my day (sob, sniff!) you didn't (couldn't) pick a playing order or shuffle and skip tracks - the album was played in full, usually on a Saturday afternoon with a few school mates, coffee, tea, biscuits, and the curtains drawn! You'd hang a 'Do not disturb' sign on the door to keep your mum out, and read the lyrics and album sleeve notes by candle light. All part of the experience. So... to me, every track is special. I think more modern listeners may simply not have heard Squonk because it's not very well known on RUclips, unlike the band's later radio-friendly material. Never mind, eh? You and I and millions of other fans can still enjoy great music as it was intended, and tracks like this never get old. Wish I could say the same about myself. (She sinks to the floor and dissolves in a pool of bubbles and tears...)

No, I disagree. The live version on "Seconds Out" is the best live version and much better than this version. I also think the original studio version is excellent.

After listening to Genesis for the better part of 5 decades, I concur. Tony Banks is a certifiable genius. Collins?? Umm... not bad. Rutherford? Okay. But yeah... Banks is the root of Genesis' success. "And Then There Were Three" is absolutely ear candy. Mostly due to Banks' talent.

Lyrics:
Like father like son
Not flesh nor fish nor bone
A red rag hangs from an open mouth
Alive at both ends but a little dead in the middle
A tumbling and a bumbling he will go
All the King's horses and all the King's men
Could never put a smile on that face
He's a sly one, he's a shy one, wouldn't you be too?
Scared to be left all on his own
He hasn't a, hasn't a friend to play with the ugly duckling
The pressure on, the bubble will burst before our eyes
All the while in perfect time
His tears are falling on the ground
But if you don't stand up, you don't stand a chance ey ey ey yeh-yeh
You don't stand a chance
Go a little faster now, you might get there in time
Mirror mirror on the wall
His heart was broken long before he ever came to you
Stop your tears from falling
The trail they leave is very clear for all to see at night
All to see at night
They come at night
In season, out of season
Oh, what's the difference when you don't know the reason
In one hand bread, the other a stone
The hunter enters the forest
All are not huntsmen who blow the huntsman's horn and by the look of this one
You've not got much to fear
Here I am, I'm very fierce and frightening
I come to match my skill to yours
Now listen here, listen to me, don't you run away now
I am a friend, I'd really like to play with you
Making noises my little furry friend would make
I'll trick him, then I'll kick him into my sack
You better watch out, you better watch out
I've got you, I've got you
You'll never get away
Walking home that night
The sack across my back the sound of sobbing on my shoulder
When suddenly it stopped
I opened up the sack, all that I had
A pool of bubbles and tears, just a pool of tears
Just a pool of tears
All in all you are a very dying race
Placing trust upon a cruel world
You never had the things you thought you should've had
And you'll not get them now
And all the while in perfect time
Your tears are falling on the ground

FREAKING GREAT !
the wall of sound is missing which i put down to the stadium production team...still good though
This never happened without Tony Banks...Sorry, guys. Been mulling it over a few decades now, concluding keyboard genius was the root. Forget the Peter vs Phil thang...so over it.
Squonk was one of the first Genesis hits without Peter.
Pickle Potato to me it's the drums and the bass pedals that drive this tune
Pickle Potato you speak the truth. Thank you for your insight and sensibility.
I was just thinking the same exact thing while listening to this. So true!
The greatest prog rock band ever!
My thanks for your tweaking and cleaning. Can't be easy, I'm sure.
