Thank you for the discussion about Jesse Glover. I was around him and a couple of his students in Seattle one time, trained a little with them. Absolute ball kickers. The fact they had the “nothingness” to train in few tools but to perfection is mind boggling. A bar fight, street fight, whatever would be very fast, very violent and would be over very quick.
I think Jesse Glover is one of the biggest badasses to ever walk.
And btw, I trained with Ted Wong as my guy. He was awesome, just different. But Jesse you’re like oh man.

Joey Orbillo sparred Bruce Lee twice, and said he was too fast. Coming from a pro heavyweight boxer, that says a lot.

      @chrisbach1533 2 месяца назад +6

Well said man! He wasnt just a pro heavyweight boxer, he was in 1965/66 a top 20 heavyweight contender, and on his boxrec wiki page are some articles about him and Jerry Quarry. Orbillo and Quarry were both considered in 1966 as the top guys to maybe beat the nr 1 and world champion Muhammad Ali, back then Sonny Liston, George Chuvalo, Cleveland Williams and others were the top HW boxers.
Quarry then fought Orbillo and won without much problems, but Orbillo went the full distance of 10 rounds with him, was even knocked down, but overcame adversity and gave Quarry a good fight.
The same Quarry lost twice to Ali and Joe Frazier, but he won via first round KO against "the hardest puncher in heavyweight history" Earnier Shavers.
Long story short: Orbillo was imo the best guy Lee ever stood in front of. All these fake point karate clowns like Chuck Norris, Bob Wall, Jim Kelly etc. were nothing compard to Orbillo. Orbillo threadned Wall in the late 80s to punch his face in when Wall lied about Lee, and Wall was afraid and sh.. his pants.
Hayward Nishioka was the nr 5 judoka in the world in 1965, Orbillo a top 20 heavyweight contender in boxing in the same year, both men sparred Lee, and both said they couldnt do nothing against him. Nishioka won the American Champoinships twice as many times as LeBell, he was faster as LeBell, Orbillo was also faster as LeBell, but Orbillo and Nishioka said they could never touch Lee.

@@chrisbach1533 well said! Fully agree.. and even Kareem Abdul Jabbar attested to Bruce’s skills. Although Kareem was not a pro fighter, he was a pro athlete. If I ran into a 7-foot, muscled and fast guy in an alley, I’d run away. :P

@@alexchen5811 Yes, true. And there are even examples in combat sport you dont need to be a pro fighter to beat a pro fighter. Look for example in K-1 back in the 2000s, the american football player Robert Malcolm "Bob" Sapp. He is a behemoth of a man and went into K-1, and he gave the best fighters there the hell of a fight, even holds two wins over K-1 legend Ernesto Hoost.
And there was a 7'2"/218cm korean named Choi, Hongman. Usually people go with his first/given name Hongman since so many koreans have the last/family name Choi.
Even if he was a ssireum-wrestler (korean wrestler) and had no striking ability, he joined K-1 in 2005 and also gave the best fighters there very competitive fights. Neither Jerome Le Banner, Ray Sefo, Badr Hari, Remy Bonjasky or Sapp were able to beat him easily.
Maybe that's also a reason why Bruce put Kareem in the top floor of the pagoda. Because he felt dont matter what style someone has, there is nothing more dangerous as such a big guy who knows how to use his body properly.
These big guys have incredible body strenght. I saw Kareem in the 1977 "Man from Atlantnis", starring Patrick Duffy and Belinda Montgomery, and he lifted up a normal man as he was nothing.
Even Wilt Chamberlain wasnt afraid of Muhammad Ali. There is a clip of them here on YT.

Excited to see it :). Definately to the right time. I know it has been mentioned many times, and anyone can think of Goldenbell Training what he wants, but he said something which is true: The Joe-Rogan-Podcast ist the biggest podcast in the world, they guy has millions and millions of viewers around the world. And since many people think he is a kind of authority in martial arts in general, they believe what he says, and just about four weeks ago in March 2024, he again brought up that LeBell stuff, portraying it like LeBell basically was many level's about Lee and Steven Seagal, and beat the cr.. out of both with ease.
The title of this newest rant of Rogan is here "The Insanity of Steven Seagal". And Rogan simply ignores everything from any Lee biographer or historian, be it Little, Polly, Logan, etc..
I know it will be a difficult task, but if I had a birhtday wish in the future, it would be a fair discussion between John Little and Matthew Polly in one podcast about this LeBell thing.
Just a week ago, I had a Matt Polly BL A Life marathon. Back in 2018, I bought the hard cover version of the book. It's one of my "bathroom books", and this means I rank it very high, because I am never tired of reading in it. But after almost six years there, many pages are a little "messed up" because of the conditions in a bathroom (hot because of showers, etc.).
Two weeks ago, I saw on Amazon there is a paperback version with a much cooler cover, same foto, but with orange background, and I usually prefer paper back over hard cover all day long, they are easier to hold and you can read in the while sitting in a bus or train without problems.
I read Matt s BL A Life bio in 14 hours with some short breaks for eating and drinking, and I took more time to read the "notes" in the end. I am usually not a guy who reads so much notes in a book, but in his case, the notes in the end are very imporatant. He wrote down there some things which you must read, it isnt enough to read the book and ignoring the notes.
Polly wrote he doesnt know if the LeBell-Lee story is true, but he said since LeBell took himself in a hold, and he [Matt] couldnt escape, he is absolute sure LeBell could have done it.
Nobody doubts LeBell was an amazing grappler and could choke out anyone when he gets a hold on him. But contrary to John Little, Matt never mentioned Hayward Nishioka or Joey Orbillo one time in his BL A Life book, not once. The nr. 5 judoka in the world and a top 20 heavyweight contender in boxing in 1965, both men stated they were unable to touch Lee during sparring, his delivery system to get in, land a hit, and get out again, was simply out of this world.
The readers should know both sides, and then decide how likely it is that such a slow-like-an-elephant guy like Ivan Gene LeBell grabs a fast-like-a-cheetah kind of guy like Bruce Junfan (Jun-fan) Lee.
LeBell said Bennie E. Dobbins was the key guy in the scenario. Some facts:
    Death of Dobbins: February 1988
LeBell first publishes the story in Black Belt through Steven Barnes: February 1989
So just the year after the crown witness Dobbins died, LeBell mentions the story for the first time. Why not while Dobbins was still alive?
Same thing with Seagal "I knew Bruce Lee personally, I met him in Jim Coburns house around 1970/71".
Death of James Coburn: November 2002
First mentioning of Seagal knewing Lee personally: After November 2002, never before.
Do the math. LeBell waited until Dobbins was gone, Seagal waited until Coburn was gone. Then they came up with their BS stories, because Dobbins and Coburn would expose them as liars.

Great analysis, but to be fair, Dan Inosanto also confirmed that Seagal DID meet Bruce at Coburn's house. Stunt veteran Ron Balicki talked about it in a longform Q and A interview years ago. He asked Inosanto directly about it, as he's Inosanto's son in law. Inosanto has known Seagal for decades, and it is very possible that it happened.

    • @chrisbach1533
      @chrisbach1533 2 месяца назад +3

@@AztecUnshaven I do respect all views and opinions, but in this case, I dont believe in Inosanto and Balicki. The same Inosanto also said Lee studied grappling with LeBell for about one year, yet John Little pointed out very well that's 99% not true. Inosanto was good friends with LeBell, and he also is a friend of Seagal, and it seems he likes to give good friends some kind of "gifts" from time to time.
A video emerged in 2021 named "james coburn talks steven seagal", and it was recorded when Seagal was 34 years old. You hear Coburn say: "About three years ago, I met Steven Seagal."
Some guys (like you and Balicki) think that interview with Coburn was recorded much earlier, but to match 1970/71, it must have been recorded 1973/74 ("about three years ago").
Here on YT you find a movie with Coburn and Charles Bronson in 1975, there you can see how Coburn looked then, he looked much younger as in this Seagal clip, which was 1986/87.
And not to forget: Coburn had a short appearance as himself in Lee Major's classic "The Fall Guy" in the pilot episode, recorded in 1981, and there he looked more like he did in the clip with Seagal, only slightly younger.
This is nothing against you personally, but when you put all these things together, I put my money 50 to 1 at any amount that Steven Seagal and Bruce Lee never met each other, dont matter what Inosanto and Balicki say.
BTW Inosantos daughter Diana also once feeded this damn Seagal-LeBell story a bit, when she said with a laughter: "Something did happen on that set", like LeBell choked Seagal out.
Bruce was not a saint, he was a liar, a cheater and had other very negative attitudes, but so did all his so called friends or family members, not one of them always said the truth, they all lied from time to time.

Something about that Ali vs Inoki fight: Boxing is still my nr 1 combat sport, I follow it more as MMA or anything else, and it was the second thing i came in contact with after karate in the 90s. The poor Antonio Inoki always gets bashed and laughed at by boxing fans, they call him a coward or what ever. Some important things:
This "fight" took place in 1976. Ali's trainer Angelo Dundee always thought only boxers are fighters, he called judo guys only "judo players", or what ever. He also had no respect for amateur wrestler's.
One of the key factor's was the rules were forbidden to make public for 20 years. And in 1996, they were made public. And these are the facts:
This was a fight between a boxer and a [amateur] wrestler, and the wrestler was not allowed to wrestle.
Inoki was not allowed to grab Ali, wrestle him, or throw him to the floor, or what ever. And since he didnt wear gloves, it was also not allowed for him to punch Ali.
So he did the only thing what was possible for him: Jumping low and try to kick Ali's legs. He was on the floor most of the time, because he was not allowed to grab or punch Ali, so this was the only thing he could do to avoid getting hit by Ali.
Inoki wasnt just a pro wrestler a la Ultimate Warrior or Hulk Hogan, people who eiter didnt train any martial arts at all, or only a bit, he was more like a Brock Lesnar kind of guy, he was also an competitive amateur wrestler and practised a couple martial arts.
So Dundee was afraid his golden goose Ali would get hurt, so the rules were basically it was impossible for Inoki to do something at all.

i have never understood why Joe Rogan is considered as some sort of authority on martial arts. I get he has am MA background and is a commentator for UFC, but so what. These things don't make him an authority on MA in general. I don't care what he thinks about anything. The fact that he's popular doesn't mean he's intelligent or informed.

    • @chrisbach1533
      @chrisbach1533 2 месяца назад +1

The answer to that is simple: Because many people are a bit brainwashed by combat sport, especially MMA. I am not among the people who say sport fighters are weak or cant fight in the street, of course they can! And of course a pro fighter who trains 24/7 in fighting would also beat a part time street punk who only trains maybe 1-2 in a week also in a street fight.
But it doesnt change the fact sport fighting, street fighting and self defense are three different things. Martial arts is the mother term for all kind of fighting arts, one big cake, but the cake has different pieces, combat sport is one piece, self defense is one piece, self defense is one piece, and there are also pieces about theoretical understandings like body mechanics etc..
Past December I posted below some self defense clip in the 80s and 90s there were famous ppl in the United Kingdom like Goeff Thompson and Peter Consterdine, later Lee Morrison too. These guys are experts in the self defense part of martial arts, not in the combat sport part, and their advices are much better and more safe as a guy like Rogan gives you.
And some Rogan fanboys felt attacked and attacked me for it.
You know 15 years ago I really thought Rogan would share this narrative like "MMA and no rules is 1-1 the same" to promote the UFC, but I was wrong. It seems he really believes it.
I mean c'mon, people die in street fights on daily base around the world, but not 1 dies in MMA on daily base, not even in a year. This alone should show it isnt the same.
One of the major rules for a street fight or self defense siution, shared by Thompson, Morrison, Consterdine and others:
Dont go close and on the ground as your first choice.
But yeah, Rogan always says grapplng styles (wrestling, judo) is the best style for self defense, always go close to somone, grab him, go down with him, the contrary of Thompson/Morrison/Consterdine.
Try to grapple somone who has a little boxcutter knife in his pocket, or only a pencil. A pencil is enough to hurt you almost fatal if it penetrates an ateria like on the side of the neck or something.
Of course these things wont happen in the Octagon. But any i..diot on the street with no manners usually doesnt care about fairness, they only want to win, dirty is comon.
And this is again not to put any sport fighters down! They are deadly also in the street. But it is about these (sport oriented) advices from Rogan about street fights and self defense situations who I find very risky. Thompson, Morrison and Consterdine have life-long experience in such scenarios, working as doormen for decades, saw everything, and Geoff always says something like this (I am only paraphrasing): "Street fights look dirty and are dirty. They are nothing like you see in sport fighting, they are like a wild swarm of bees, unorthodox, strange, dirty and can be deadly."
Thompson and Consterdine are both experienced in boxing, karate and other styles, they arent just some trash talkers. And contrary to 90% of combat sport fighters, they worked for decades in prefessions where street fights and self defense situations are comon, they know more and can give you good advices what to do and what better dont (like Rogan, always go close and grab someone).
Buttom line: He will never invite John Little or Matt Polly on his podcast. Because they go against his narrative when it comes to Bruce Lee. And he also wont have Geoff Thompson, Lee Morrison or Peter Consterdine on his podcast, because they go against his narrative too, about his narrative combat sport, street fight and self defense is basically all the same.
Bas Rutten: "If you are only intrested in self defense and nothing else, Krav Maga is better as MMA."

I agree the Gene Lebell connection is overstated and I love seeing Bruce Lee's Seattle years getting the proper respect.
In addition to Sato and Glover, Shuzo "Chris" Kato was mentioned by Hayward Nishioka as an important instructor of Bruce Lee during his Seattle years. Nishioka speaks at about the 1:30 mark of this video interview:
    ruclips.net/video/EVilU2bRN7w/видео.html
Shuzo "Chris" Kato was a prominent judo instructor and competitor here in Seattle. He and Fred Sato were teammates at Seattle Dojo. May they RIP 🙏
Kato is also mentioned by Jesse Glover in Bruce Lee: Life of a Legend:
"Bruce didn’t know much about judo, but I took him to the Seattle Judo Club and I showed him some stuff and introduced him to a guy named Fred Sato, who was a black belt. They became pretty good friends. Actually, I think Fred is the one who introduced him to the five ways of attack. He liked judo but the only problem he said was, “How do you get hold of the guy?” When he was going to the University of Washington, he also took a judo class from one of my teachers, Kato, who was a US 180-pound champion."

Why would the stuntmen on the Green Hornet have needed Lebell anyway? I think the story is bullshit , but let's deconstruct a few things. If Bruce had been going too heavy on the stuntmen (I don't believe that he was) they could simply have taken it up with him directly or with the producer or whatever. By "taken it up" I don't mean "fight." They were all adults and would surely have been able to sort things out amongst themselves. The idea that Lebell would have been needed to come in and "teach a lesson" is nonsensical. This was a TV studio run by, and crewed by, people who knew what they were doing. Not the playground in elementary school at recess. It makes no sense when you think it through.

He was like practically 1 of 4 table legs that built the new functioning WING CHUN. So... as far as they go? Absolutely above board and JESSE? There’s a lot of DRAM talk with that. But his skills? His teachings? We think they are valuable. But WING CHUN itself has ALL OF THAT and those people are just people. Na mean. No different than you and I. Absolutely legends... but concerning importance in the art, definitely should be studied. I’ve found it valuable paying dividends.

Lebell was also a catch wrestler and trained in boxing from very early childhood. There are lots of pics of him as a little kid in his mom's gym with world champs. He ALSO was AAU national judo champ before training at the kodokan. Lebell was the real deal. Bruce Lee was a movie star.

Gene was no slouch. But keep.in mind, he needed to have an edge in a time when many martial artists felt that grappling, even judo, was seen as "old hat" and ineffective when put up against striking. I'm sure if it didn't happen, Gene felt there was no harm in starting the rumor. Personally, even as a Bruce fanboy myself, I do see SOME sort of situation happen between the two, be it positive or negative

Stopped watching the video once you says that Gene LeBell only knew pro wrestling finishing holds.
    NOT TRUE..!!
He spent time learning from two of the greatest catch as catch can
    wrestlers of the :20th century:
    Lou Thesz and Karl Gotch.
The fact that these two men became pro wrestlers means nothing
I started training in catch in 2002 and even spent time training with Billy Robinson in 2011
Billy was another of the great REAL wrestlers like Gotch and Thesz.
And I have researched catch history very thoroughly including what Gene LeBell is all about.
And as someone who also went into boxing training in 2005 snd who put wing chun, boxing, and catch together in 2010 and began teaching it to my students I can assure you that it is VERY BELIEVABLE to think that LeBell sparred with Bruce Lee and took him down repeatedly and locked him up.
And went on to teach Bruce sone catch privately.
Btw Billy Robinson taught catch to the great mma fighter KAZUSHI SAKURABA who beat 4 Gracie’s: including Royce and Renzo.

    • @TheKungFuGenius
      @TheKungFuGenius  Месяц назад

Didn’t say he only knew pro wrestling holds, but if that’s what you wanna hear that’s up to you. Very clearly said how credentialed the late Gene was, the problem is that there’s no contemporary evidence of Bruce having trained with him. Bruce had meticulous daytimers with every appointment in there from taking his dog to the vet to what he taught Chuck Norris in his lesson. There’s a brutal absence of anything related to Gene LeBell in those daytimers, not a single photo of them together that is not on the set of a TV show, and Gene’s own account contradict his own accounts.
People have a difficulty discerning between what is actual hard fact in fiction in terms of historical record and what peoples preferences in martial arts are. The reason I don’t debate these things in the comments is because they’re very rarely talking about the same thing. You started your comment by misconstruing what I said, and continue talking about Gene’s credentials, which had nothing to do with what I said.

Personally, I find that Jesse Glover's approach is closest way I would describe a couple of people I know. ( Literally focused on heavily refining key skill sets and motions over completing a whole sequence of movements. )
